emily: and i'm emily riemer. cindy, we look at the pictures, the snow and the ice. some place s are in the 50's right now. cindy: south of boston it is 50 degrees right now. we'll all be up in the 50's eventually today. but the concern is the word "eventually" because right now we still have icing problems north and west of the city of boston from the freezing rain we had overnight. it's created an icy glaze. i expect hazardous travel to continue north and west of boston through about 8:00 or 9:00 this. you can see why. temperature in town has jumped up to 35 degrees. notice south of boston it's near 50 degrees. i wanted to go in tighter. marshfield 52. 53 in taunton. as far north as nooraniwood it is 49 degrees but north and west of the city, notice all the 20's locked in tight here around the merrimack valerie up to nashua. back along northern parts of worcester county it's all in the 20's and a thousand feet up at the airport in worcester where this measurement is taken it's 42. at ground level around the worcester area it is still below freezing.

fortunately the steadier precipitation is is lifting now so it's just patches drizzle and freezing drizzle. as this low lifts north ward we're going to get a slug of heavy rain to come on in as strong southerly winds push everybody into the 50's this afternoon. that rain is going to be coming in hardest after noontime here. you can see it approaching around 4:00 in the worcester area. at that time, we're talking about heavy downpours and the potential for damaging winds. so that is the concern as this line moves right during the evening commute into the boston area. it will shift off shore until 9:00 this evening. lots of troubling this morning and for the evening commute as well. let's get you out to the roads though. right now icing still an issue north and west of boston. olessa: we are watching a few problem spots. a live look outside. here is the expressway by the gas tank. this stretch right here just seeing volume starting to build on the northbound side. mainly wet. let's get to the maps and see the rest of your ride as you head north of town. we are watching one accident right over by route 1a on 128 northbound. another accident cleared from

once again entrance, and exit ramps. secondary roadways even parking lots will be very slippery this morning. north of town not too bad at this point. the pikes looks okay. one accident we're still watching. pike eastbound by route 146. a disabled car south of town on 24 north by route 139. trains and buses for now running on schedule. for a closer look at the roads, doug meehan is out there driving them for us this morning. doug: we're on 495 southbound here approaching exit 48 of route 125 for those who know where that is up in bradford. we're start to go see volume build. we've been out here all morning long. i can tell you even though it's still wet, it is still slippery and slick in spots. it is improving. as we're seeing those temperatures rise from first thing this morning got out here at 2:30, we are down to about, oh, gosh, 20 miles per hour, 30 miles per hour. very icy. very dicey. now as those temperatures

the road conditions improve. that's a relative term. we're starting to see more melting as well. that is causing a lot more water on the roadways as well. we'll keep an eye on things for you. in the meantime driving safe on 495 southbound doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily, randy, back to you guys. randy: doug, thank you. right now crews are working to clean up the flooding that forced a popular newton hotel to evacuate. about 250 people removed from the crowne plaza for fear they might get stranded. emily: the eyeopener's sera congi is live in newton with what started all of this. sera: emily and randy, you can still see here this morning that the lights are out in the hotel. firefighters say that a pipe burst in an electrical room last night and that dumped four feet of water on to the floor. they had to cut power to the entire hotel last night and evacuate 12 floors. people were initially taken to a ballroom then transported to other hotels. >> no word about the basement

electrical and causing some problems. >> it's very frustrating because we've been here since 4:30 in the morning from chicago. we just want to get some rest and get some work done. sera: firefighters say the leak was repaired last night. however, they're still dealing with all of that water. there is no timeline yet on when the hotel might reopen. live in newton, sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. emily: right now they're dealing with a big mess in a revere neighborhood. a thick sheet of ice surrounding homes on arcadia street. the problem-- a tide gate installed several years ago. it's supposed to keep the ocean water out at high tide, but the sub-zero temperatures over the weekend caused the floodgate to freeze open. residents woke up sunday to their properties and street encased in ice and cars frozen in place. for some families it means no access to their crawl space and everything inside. sheri desimone has ice underneath her home as well.

running water because the water has no way to drain through because everything is frozen underneath. emily: residents aren't sure how much damage will be revealed when all of the ice thaws out. right now passengers bound for new york are spending the night in manchester, new hampshire, after their flight had to make an unscheduled stop. the delta plane was headed from the dominican republic to j.f.k. last night. but it was diverted to manchester-boston regional because of weather. passengers had to wait for more than an hour and a half before being allowed off the plane. that's because customs officials had to be brought in from portland, maine. they'll be put on another flight this morning. randy: right now three teenagers and a firefighter are in the hospital after an ice rescue in rhode island. the teens were skating on brickyard pond when they fell through. all three managed to get out of the water. a firefighter fell in as rescue crews responded. they were all evaluated for hypothermia as a precaution. a massachusetts man is dead

slammed into a tree yesterday. he was skiing with his family on burke mountain in vermont. state police say the 58-year-old lost control and went into the woods. he was not wearing a helmet. emily: today the state's fifth medical marijuana dispensary will open its doors. patriot care will host a ribbon-cutting this morning on industrial avenue in lowell. the company plans to open facilities in greenfield and boston later this year. according to the state, there were more than 19,000 medical marijuana patients in massachusetts as of the end of january. somerville is suing over the proposed resort casino planned for neighboring everett. the city's mayor claims the steve wynn project ignored somerville's environmental and health concerns; namely, the congestion and exhaust caused by thousands of additional cars. a wynn spokesman called the lawsuit a purely political move adding traffic concerns are already being addressed. randy: new this morning, a malden police captain is going to court claiming the city blocked his efforts to investigate crimes involving city employees.

two-and-a-half in spots. then we had the freezing rain on top. we're starting to dry out right now. nothing more than patchy drizzle or freezing drizzle for the next few hours. however it is all about the temperatures. notice we have fog this morning. visibility a half a mile worcester and lawrence and beverly a quarter of a mile up in portsmouth this morning. look at these temperatures. boston now 35 degrees. we just climbed above freezing in beverly. you get away from these areas still in the 20's bedford to fitchburg nosh with a orange as well. worcester at the airport 1,000 feet up has climbed to 43. it is colder at ground level down in the center of town. south of boston close to 50 degrees in plymouth this morning. a lot of you were below zero yesterday morning at this time. and now you're running in the 40's. just an incredible turn-around. it will get warmer as this area of low pressure lifts to the north. that strong southerly wind is going to push the temperatures up everywhere so by lunchtime most of us are running close to 50 degrees. we are in the 50's this afternoon looking for a high of

some lower 50's worcester all the way up into southern new hampshire. again it takes a while to get there this morning. so i do have icing concerns threw about 8:00 or 9:00 this morning and then the focus shifts for heavy rain between 4:00 and 8:00 this evening. and the threat for damaging winds as well. we're going to be watching an area of heavy downpours approaching worcester by 4:00 this afternoon and then look at the bad timing. it is moving through greater boston during the evening commute through about 6:00 or 7:00 this evening. at this time can't rule on a rumble of thunder. these heavy downpours should be pushing off shore by 9:00 or so this evening. in terms of the rain, inch an inch-and-a-half of water in a short period of time. certainly going to be concerned with poor drainage flooding out there and ponding on the roads. in addition to that, we've got a high wind warning up through 10:00 tonight near the coastline and a wind advisory farther inland. their winds could gust to 40 miles per hour. they may gust close to 60 miles per hour near the coastline. tonight we dry things out and drop down to near the freezing mark. tomorrow is a dry day, a milder day with some sunshine in the

if you're heading out of worcester this morning. 24 northbound accident and a disabled car by route 139. your trip on the expressway 25 to 30 braintree to boston. trains and buses running on schedule. randy. randy: this could have been much worse. a garbage truck flies off interstate 95 and lands in a park. take a look. police in miami are trying to figure out how this happened. somehow the truck smashed through a guardrail on the elevated highway and plunged 100 feet just barely missing an apartment complex. the truck driver does have serious injuries, but he was the only person hurt. emily: your economy headlines this tuesday. u.s. markets are back open today after taking a break for presidents' day. right now, stock futures are mixed. with no guidance from wall street being closed, asian markets rallied for a second day today. the lobster industry is sending less of its catch to canada as processing grows right here in new england. lobstermen have long sent a

this right here shows you the difference between right now and 24 hours ago. it is 55 degrees warmer out the door in plymouth this morning compared to yesterday morning at this time. that is crazy. now you can see in boston right now, the sky is beginning to get a little bit brighter. the sun is up officially at 6:40 this morning. and there are some breaks in the clouds. the damage was done overnight from snow and then freezing rain leaving a glaze of ice on everything. where those temperatures are still near or below freezing north and west of town, it's going to stay slippery through about 8:00 or 9:00 this morning. you can see boston is 43. worcester 43 but north of there, 20's to around 30 degrees. merrimack valley northern worcester county these are my concern areas for icing for the next few hours but look to the south. already 53 in taunton. 50 in new bedford. the warmth is coming everywhere. nothing worse than patches of drizzle or freezing dlizzal this morning. the storm itself is to our south and the slug of heavier rain is going to push in this afternoon

"the globe" survey found 106 workers drive those cars to 52 suburbs with taxpayers paying for gas and maintenance. on average, those employees with cars were paid salaries of $190,000 in 2015. emily: paying it forward. a local woman helping a total stranger and setting off a chain of good deeds. sofia andrade won $200 on a scratch ticket. she was at a stop sign in new bedford when she spotted glen williams who has been homeless for three years. when she found out all the local shelters were full, she spent

or 9:00 this morning. you can see the temperatures are run,the 40's to around 50 degrees south of boston right now. and in worcester we just got up to 45. you can see northern worcester county, the merrimack valley, southern new hampshire. these are the areas where it will take a little bit longer for the temperatures to jump up. you will get in there. in fact, you're heading into the 50's this afternoon. it will take another few hours before those temperatures warm up. please be very careful. this is where we had this afternoon. mid 50's after being below zero quled morning so incredible changes. you can see the radar is quieting down this morning. we have patches of drizzle or freezing drizzle but that's it. up until about noontime we're closer to us. as it does so, warm southerly winds are really going to push those temperatures up. through noontime, not looking at too much happening. 8:00 p.m., that's when the heaviest rain comes in with downpours and the potential for damaging wind gusts as well. it's this line of embedded downpours. could even be a rumble of thunder pushing into the worcester area around 4:00 and

and your trip on the expressway 30 to 35 minutes. so far the trains and the buses are doing okay. for more on the roads we'll head out to doug meehan. good morning. doug: good morning, olessa. 128 southbound here approaching route 2 through the lexington-bedford stretch. it is stop-and-go. here is what we're experiencing. lots of wet roads. more of that ice is further north. maybe toward the new hampshire border. we're seeing heavy, dense fog. here is the other thing. here's how you can help at home. we're seeing those sheets of ice and snow come flying off the roofs of cars out here. so take that extra second to get that stuff off because your fellow motorists will appreciate it. we're really start to go see it because the first layer is that ice. and the top layer is the snow. it comes off in one big panel. it's causing problems out here on the roadways. that's it for now out on 128 southbound approaching 4 and 225.

randy: doug, thank you. among the problems this morning a hotel evacuated in newton. emily: the eye's sera congi is live outside the crowne plaza with the flooding clean-up this morning. sera: emily and randy, if you sera: emily and randy, if you take the mass pike, you know this hotel well. this morning you'll notice it is in the dark. power was shut off after a pipe burst last night which flooded the electrical room in basement with four feet of water. all 12 floors were evacuated. about 250 people had to leave. at first they were sent to the ball room, but then they had to be transported to other hotels. firefighters say the leak has been repaired. however, they're still dealing with all of that water so it's unclear at this point when the hotel will reopen. live in newton this morning, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. erika: it was an unexpected night in new hampshire for a plane full of passengers diverted away from new york's j.f.k. airport. the delta flight from the dominican republic had to change course last night. a delta spokesperson confirming

problems all day monday due to weather and manchester was the fastest solution. after a long wait on the plane and then in the airport, the airline ultimately put the passengers up in hotels. they take off for new york this morning. today the state's fifth medical marijuana dispensary will open its doors. patriot care will host a ribbon-cutting this morning on industrial avenue in lowell. the company plans to open facilities in greenfield and boston later this year. according to the state, there were more than 19,000 medical marijuana patients in massachusetts as of the end of january. randy: a shrewsbury firefighter accused of inappropriately touching his children's 15-year-old babysitter will be in court today. according to court papers, the alleged assault happened in the firefighter's auburn home. sean bohdiewicz will be arraigned in worcester district court. breaking overnight russia denying claims that the country's warplanes bombed a hospital in northern syria.
