morning. only about two lines will get through. this is all because of a signal failure. antoinette and olessa will have more for you. good morning. randy: cindy fitzgibbon is here. cindy: today will be a pretty nice day. we start out in the cold, but skies are clear and the wind is not that strong. boston at 21, worcester at 15. look at nashua -- south of boston you are in the teens, the lower 20' s were plymouth and lower 30' s on the cave. even if you ocean effect snow showers will diminish and overall we clear out. the first half of the day is brightest -- this warm front approaches in the afternoon and

temperatures for the weekend. and 20' lunch time most of us will be above the freezing mark, even approaching 40 degrees. little touch of snow overnight. randy: right now, getting ready for another rough morning on the rails. emily: the signal problem that fixed. we have team coverage to get you through the potential mess. we begin with the eye-opener' s antoinette antonio, live with the message to commuters. antoinette: well, it' s very quiet here. as you can see, this is expected to be a nightmare today. another morning of detours, packed platforms no matter what method you take. all these people trying to get into boston this morning.

dealing with. only the franklin and stoughton lines will be open, all the way to south station. that means all the other commuter redlines will end at earlier spots, funneling all the passengers to the red and orange lines. that could once again be preceded by this. crowds and during another nightmare trip -- crowds in during another nightmare trip. >> absolutely disgusting. disgraceful. >> no ability to plan. it' s really frustrating. antoinette: despite the chaos, mbta workers inside the station got high praise from the passengers we talked to for trying to do whatever they could to alleviate the situation. right now, there is no estimated timeline on when all of this will be fixed. once again, this is all due to

give the baby a chance to survive. a mother and her five month old were crossing the street around 9:00 last night when they were hit by a car. a witness rushed over to help, the neighbor frantically giving the baby cpr. >> i cannot ask if she was making it. she was little, very tiny. i tried to do what i could do, that i knew how to do to help her. taken to boston medical center with critical head injuries. the driver remained at the scene. police are trying to figure out if speed was a factor. emily: a wild scene -- a car ripped in half after the driver crashed into a utility pole. police say they were trying to pull over the 39-year-old after he blew through a stop sign, but he crashed and ran away. police later caught him at a

he will face a judge once he is out of the hospital. randy: a search for two men accused of attacking a umass amherst student inside a dorm room. a shelter in place order was issued for two hours on that campus as police were scouring the campus. erika is tracking the new developments. erika: good morning. campus police say this does not appear to be a random act. the victim was apparently targeted. the attack allegedly happened when two men rushed into a room with a gun, assaulting a male student. he suffered cuts to his head but wasn' t seriously hurt. the school issue tweets and a siren, warning everyone to stay in place. >> we wanted to come back, because i lived here, and at the same time we didn' t feel safe, because no one knew where he was. >> usa tonight. >> that' s what' s important. erika: by the time police arrived, the suspect had driven off campus. neither are believed to be u.s.

the campus was deemed safe this morning as police continue their search. normal schedule resumes today. randy: multiple police are searching for this man, accused of murdering a woman. police say that kenneth manning killed colleen russell and left her body at the cliffside commons apartments. police are asking anyone with information to come forward. emily: 5 investigates teaming up with northeastern university school of journalism -- in three out of four cases, boston police officers suspended or fired for cleared by independent arbitrators and put back on the job. records obtained show that, since 2007, arbitrators have overturned 72% of the discipline handed out by the department and challenged by the patrolman' s union. six officers tire ried to file from a variety of reasons.

m all for the officers and their rights, but you are putting officers back to work. that could endanger the public. i' m not comfortable with that. emily: the union that represents boston police officers told us the reason officers got their jobs back through arbitration was because the facts did not support firing the officers. randy: new this morning, community leaders not happy with the new report that finds the boston latin -- that boston latin inappropriately handled claims of racism. the report did find that administrators did not adequately investigate after a student used a racial slur and made a remark about lynching to a black classmate. that case is one of six incidents where students were disciplined in some way. one city counselor called the findings unacceptable. a new hampshire sheriffs deputy is behind bars, charged with multiple sexual assaults. he'

[laughter] emily: i have really long arms. olessa: don' t injure yourself. temperatures have been up and down all week long. up again. it will be warming up, chili, more seasonal -- chilly, more seasonal. 50 degrees above average for this time of year, and that warm air is back here. you can see it around the st. louis area. the leading edge of that warm air has a lot of clouds and a touch of snow, with the potential for seeing some light snow tonight. we start out clear, except for the outer cape where we have some clouds. lots of 20' s -- boston to marshfield, teens north and west of the city, 15 in worcester. 10 out the door in nashua.

by noontime, above the freezing mark in most spots. bright at lunchtime and seasonal, and then the clouds come down. looking for a high temperature in the upper 30' s, close to 40 degrees. the greater skies through the early afternoon, by 5:00 p.m., here come the clouds. if you have plans, don' t be shocked if there is light snow. i don' t think it will be impactful, but there will be snow scattered about, perhaps mixing with rain. then we dry things out. look at the temperatures overnight -- but he close to the freezing mark. i' m not expecting even where we see snow much accumulation. a coating to maybe an inch, with a few inches likely across northern new england as the warm front moves through. saturday, southwesterly wind, breezy and mild. it' s mainly a dry weekend. the sunday is brighter, and

i think we see some sunshine the lower 50' s. but sunday night into monday morning -- a burst of snow coming in. doesn' t look like a lot, but just enough to make things slippery first thing on monday morning. 40 monday afternoon, and there you see that storminess potentially still lingering to wednesday. right now, some rain or snow is likely during the day. emily: rain, rain, rain. a little messy on the commute this morning. olessa: all because of those problems with the amtrak signal yesterday. we are still dealing with that this morning, only franklin in providence lines will go all the way to south station. all other transonic earlier stops, funneled onto the red and orange line, which will cause some big, busy platforms. several trains have already been canceled. some are already experiencing 15-30 minute delays. the roadways are a different story -- great shape on the

called, but it is fried -- that it is cold, but it is friday. cindy: and how about 50 degrees for a february weekend? last weekend, it was zero and then some. what a change we have coming. it' s calm this morning, and as you look to the north, look how much colder it is. in new york state, saranac lake is -6. a cold air mass over the northeast. a lot of the suburbs on the north shore, down to 10 in nashua. 15 in worcester, and from taunton to plymouth, lower 20' s. a little more cloud cover through the overnight. these are dissipating, so you will brighten up through the morning. the rest of it is starting out clear, but as we go into the afternoon, the clouds associated with that warmer air will move in. the brightest guys are through early afternoon.

11:00 a.m., around 40 degrees for this time of year. just ahead. randy: at this hour, mbta riders are bracing for another bad commute, the aftermath of signal problems that could trigger a third nightmare ride in a row. emily: olessa is monitoring delays, but we begin with information just in. antoinette: that information, literally into us within the last 30 seconds. a man with the mbta telling us that trains will be goin g all the way to south station this morning. once again, the trains will be going all the way to south station. of course, there are still several delays and cancellations reported, so we could still be

what we had yesterday, what that nightmare looks like. it was packed here, the riders were frustrated, but earlier, he was telling me that only the franklin and pop at nd providence lines were able to get through. but we just got word from the mbta that the trains will be going all the way to south station. this is breaking news for all of you who take the t. we do want to get people out because there are still a lot of delays and cancellations. s check in with olessa. olessa: thank you. we are already hearing about some delays in several trains this morning. of course we will keep you posted on any specific delays that come in, but as she was saying, all the trains will be

as far as roadways, we are issue free. , the leverett connector all that construction is gone. this is south of town on the expressway. one lane is closed, but at this point, delays are not too bad. the pike looks great, 15 minutes. as you traveled north, you are in good shape. 93 all the way down to the leverett connector. emily: thank you. some of the other stories we are following right now -- a mother and baby are critically injured after being hit while crossing humboldt avenue. the driver did stay at the scene. randy: right now, police are searching for the two men accused of attacking a umass amherst student inside his storm room, forcing the entire campus to shelter in place. the victim was not seriously hurt. police do not believe the attack was random.

right now, a driver is in the hospital and facing charges after a crash that forced his car in two. police say it started when he was pulled over and took off. randy: thousands of students are on waitlist for charter schools across the commonwealth, according to new numbers from the state education department. the waitlist is now a major focus point as the charter school debate heats up. the number of schools -- critics argue they are overstated. emily: police are looking for these two people in connection with a violent crash. one is accused of trying to stab an officer with a syringe during a stop yesterday. he led the officer on a chase, where the officer wrecked his cruiser. the other passenger and he are now on the run. a college student is under arrest after an alleged road

yesterday morning in wellesley. a driver slowed down as he approached construction, and that is when police say he rolled down his window and pointed a gun at the driver. he will be in court today. randy: at a boston intersection, topping the list as most dangerous. according to a report, there were more than 100 crashes where west street meets pleasant street over a three-year period. the report also found deadly crashes in the state are up 2% since 2014. it is due prices and longer distances being driven. emily: a close call as a full of kids. randy: the bus driver says it fault. and the team, making 20 bucks stretch. our individual strategies for making the most of the money. signal problem on the rail has

randy: good morning. we have your news to go. new information in the last two minutes -- we are following breaking news on a signal that stalled the commuter rail services yesterday. emily: and frank is in roxbury, erika trekking the search for two men who attacked a umass amherst student. first, we want to check in with cindy and your forecast. cindy: talk about dramatic changes. from last weekend when it was -9 on sunday morning to this weekend, when we will likely be touching 51 degrees in the afternoon. some warmer air off to the west this morning, 61 right now in st. louis. that warmer air will coming in, with a little light snow near the great lakes. we will watch that as we get deeper into the day. mainly clear outside of the clouds on the south shore. 21 in boston, but a lot of teens this morning north and west of town. temperatures will come up as the

into the upper 30' s to around 40 degrees, seasonal for this time of year. clouds of the increasing, brighter skies through early this afternoon. by 5:00 p.m., mainly cloudy. there may be passing, light snow mixing with some rain self of th e pike. not expecting much out of it, a coating to an inch, mainly north of the pike. saturday, we will see the skies tried to brighten up, but overall it is mostly cloudy. breezy and miles, and sunday is the brighter weekend with temperatures in the lower 50' s. along with that, there will be a wave of low pressure developing, which will go to the south on sunday night. so look at this after midnight on sunday -- a burst of snow. it doesn' t look like a lot, but the timing does not look good for the monday morning commute.

the hour on breaking news we are following. emily: live team coverage -- antoinette antonio has the conditions as the trains get up and running. antoinette: and emily, some really good news coming in this morning regarding the commuter rail. we have just gotten word from the mbta that trains are now going all the way into south station this morning. those amtrak signal problems we dealt with yesterday. have been fixed once again, the trains are once station. but here is a look at the scene from yesterday -- it really was a nightmare commute, both in the evening and in the morning. yesterday, the platform here was really a acked with passengers trying to find other ways to get to their final destination, all of this due to allowing the commuter rail

different lines to get all the way to south station. once again, we have just heard from the mbta that those signal problems have been fixed, but nonetheless, there are still a lot of delays this morning, and also we are hearing about some cancellations with the commuter rail. for more, let' s check in with olessa. olessa: thank you. there are some mechanical problems for the lowell line trains later on this morning, so keep in mind a couple of those are already canceled. plan accordingly, but some good news that all trains will be going into south station. a live look outside at the expressway, the northbound side heading to the top of the screen. already a busy right, but let' s get to the map. we are still watching some delays on the expressway because of an accident by furnace brook. once you get past it, a 20 minute ride into boston.

then north of town, good shape. a little bit of volume, more delays as you travel toward the leverett connector. good news on the trains heading into south station. frank? frank: a mother and her five-month-old baby hit by a car while crossing the street in roxbury. in critical condition this morning. police tell us the crash happened on humboldt avenue last night, and a neighbor rushed over to help, giving the infant cpr. the mother and the baby were taken to boston medical center with serious injuries. the driver remained at the scene. police are trying to figure out if speed was a factor. emily: classes will be held as scheduled at umass amherst after the first ever shelter in place order was called, prompted by an attack inside the dorm. as police continue their search for the men responsible, it appears this was not random, that the victim was targeted.

t think the attackers who rushed into the hall with a gun were students. a big scare as the school issued alerts through social media and even set off the fire in. this morning, the campus has been deemed safe and normal classes will be held. emily: police are searching for this man, accused of murdering a woman in malden. police say kenneth manning killed colleen russell, leaving her body at the cliffside commons apartments. anyone with information is asked to come forward. randy: an update to a heartwarming story about a homeless man arrested yesterday for failing to register as a sex offender. he made the news this week when a local woman used her lottery winnings to give him a motel room. her gofundme page raised thousands. that money will go to local charities to help the homeless. emily: the trials of the baltimore police officers accused in the debt the freddie gray are now on hold. maryland'

officers, whose trial ended in a mistrial, could be forced to testify against the others. the second trial was expected to start on monday. the court will hear arguments in march for the decision. gray died last april after suffering a spinal injury in police custody. randy: a new search connected to the san bernardino terrorist attack, this time involving the brother of the shooter. the fbi will not say exactly what agents are trying to find inside the home. he' farook, who killed 14 people in december. arrested or named a suspect. emily: thousands of mourners are expected to gather at the late justice antonin scalia. among those paying their respects, president obama and the first lady, vice president joe biden and his wife. randy: stunning video out of hawaii, showing a crash into pearl harbor.

those are going to be dissipating, high-pressure nosing in. it will bring in the warmer temperatures, with more clouds. the bright sunshine, lunchtime, then unloading more clouds. it makes a run for that 40 degree mark. that' s seasonal for this time of year. once the clouds get in here, we will see the light snow and rain during the overnight hours, but do notice the temperatures overnight, close to freezing. a pretty light event, the potential for a coaching to an inch of snow, mainly north of the pike. once that warm front lifts out, we have a milder southwest wind with a little more cloud cover. sunday is the brighter weekend, but there is low pressure developing. it will give us the chance of light snow sunday night, which could linger into the monday morning commute.
