"eyeopener." doug: good morning, everybody. saturday, february 20. good morning. i'm disowg mee hand. karen: and i'm karen anderson in for antoinette this morning. there are some good things in the forecast today. doug: yes, indeed. it starts with danielle. danielle: thank, doug and karen. we'll take that. we'll take the warm-up that's ahead for the day today. we have to get through a couple more showers this morning. had some come through overnight in the form of snow and then turning over to rain. now most of these are actually just plain old rain showers because the temperatures are beginning to warm up especially the cape and the islands. already in the mid 40's on nantucket. this is just plain old rain for you folks there. the only exception is maybe wet snow flakes mixing in maybe up through the worcester hills near orange, near fitchburg and then out in western mass near pittsfield and the berkshires as you're in the mid 30's. not expecting much in the way of accumulation. maybe on the grass but not on the roads. by 7:00 here they come in to worcester county. by 9:00 starting to dissipate in

we clear out through the day. we'll see a mix of sun and clouds. temperaturewise though, look at this. we are warming up into the low 50's by 2:00 and more sunshine later today by 4:00. we'll talk about how long the mild weather continues and when we could see our next chance for some snow ahead. doug? doug: danielle, thank you. new information just in to the news room on that massive mill fire burning right now. officials with the fall river fire department telling us the morning. a passer-by called it in. there are multiple fire departments on the scene. we're told that there is no danger to the apartments in that area as firefighters work to put out the flames. the good news here, no one has been injured. the eye's frank holland is on the way now to fall river right now. he will have live reports throughout the morning. doug: oh, my goodness. terrifying moments for

flames whip through this home. right now that fire is out, and everyone accounted for. but at one point those flames triggered that call for help. karen: neighbors were holding their breath as the fire swept through this house on perthshire road in brighton, and boston firefighters swarmed the upper floor. that mayday call went out when a firefighter heard the piercing alarm that signals a collegaue may be trapped. but no one was actually in distress. it turns out that these alarms will sound if a firefighter stands still for more than 30 seconds. thankfully everyone was accounted for. chief: it can be the worst day of your life. everybody is breathing a major sigh of relief. karen: in the end four firefighters were treated for minor injuries, but the two families who live there and the firefighters are all okay. careless disposal of a cigarette on the second floor rear porch is believed to be the cause. doug: commitment 2016. early voting continues today in two key states. the democrats caucus in nevada while south carolina holds its republican primary.

polls, but ted cruz has gained 11 points in the past month. he's at 23 percent to trump's 28. meanwhile, it's a dead heat in nevada. a new poll shows hillary clinton and bernie sanders in a virtual tie, 48 to 47 percent. karen: both clinton and sanders are hoping their rallies will energize casino workers in las vegas to turn out for them at the caucuses today. clinton's husband bill and daughter chelsea joined her at a "get out the vote" rally yesterday. and she's looking ahead to super tuesday. here in massachusetts, her campaign organizers will be opening six local offices across the state today. among them locations in boston, new bedford, and worcester. volunteers and supporters will be going door-to-door, urging voters to support clinton in the primary march first. sanders also rallied voters with a concert in nevada ahead of today's caucus, and he's looking ahead to super tuesday as well he's got a campaign stop here in massachusetts on monday, hosting a rally at umass amherst. sanders will discuss a wide

climate change and making college affordable. doug: republicans fanning out across south carolina vying for last-minute votes as well. donald trump holding the lead, but it his newest comments that are making waves. the g.o.p. frontrunner going after apple for its refusal to create software to unlock an iphone used by one of the san bernardino shooters. trump is calling for a boycott until the company complies with a court order. apple executives say the software would be "too dangerous to create," threatening the digital privacy of millions of iphone customers worldwide. ted cruz holding a rally in west columbia, south carolina. he's hoping his consistent focus on christian values and his southern roots will give him an edge in today's primary. cruz did tell supporters he'll be leaving the state briefly today to attend supreme court justice antonin scalia's funeral in washington but would make it back for election night. florida senator marco rubio in clemson, where some sort of

during his rally. the senator leading that group in prayer. by his side there is south who has endorsed rubio. he has been gaining ground over the last couple of days. meanwhile jeb bush trailing holding a meet-and-greet with voters. he was out campaigning with his mother, the former first lady. bush acknowledging he has a long way to go to get the necessary delegates to win the nomination. and john kasich also hoping for a strong finish after his second-place win in the new hampshire primary. the ohio governor says he has been in touch john mccain to talk about military spending. he's been mentioning the conversation with mccain during several campaign stops. and he will bring his campaign here to worcester for a town hall meeting this afternoon. later he'll be tracking the south carolina primary results in wakefield. karen: bill cosby's wife is scheduled to be deposed on monday by lawyers for the women

assaulting them decades ago. a federal judge denied her efforts yesterday to postpone the deposition again. cosby will be questioned about her husband's behaviors. her lawyers did suggest that they may appeal the decision before monday. bill cosby will not have to attend a deposition hearing. doug: burst pipes mean some kindergarteners and first graders in framingham may have to finish the school year in a middle school. the damage so bad inside mccarthy elementary students will be moved to fuller middle school. but they'll be separated from the older students. karen: flooding has shut down part of the v.a. hospital in jamaica plain. pipes burst last weekend in the frigid weather causing major you can see the water moving into several areas of the hospital on this surveillance video. the v.a. is extending clinic hours at other boston locations to help veterans. and they've brought in six mobile units from as far away as virginia to help.

and take care of our veterans for the next two or three months while we get the space that's going to be service back into a normal operation. karen: some of the clinics in jamaica plain will be back open on monday, but others could take up to eight weeks to clean up. the coast guard has suspended the search for a missing swimmer off naragansett this morning. the search began after a report of a person in the water thursday night. luggage was recovered at the scene near hazard rock, along with the passport of 61-year-old peter butler. but crews have not been able to find him. doug: take a look. we first showed you this dramatic video from the water off chatham thursday night on newscenter 5. now we are getting a first-hand look a the boats coast guard crews use to navigate the choppy seas. newscenter 5's todd kazakiewich has the story from chatham. >> we train and make sure that the front of the boat is squared

in the video. todd: the video shows coast guard training in very poor weather. in this case at the tail end of a recent winter storm off nauset beach. but these are the very conditions that could lead to a mariner making a may day call. >> so although it looks like the wave swells up the boat, it does-- but inside the cabin of this boat with the seats that are available it's a very calm ride. todd: what you can't see in the video is that there are actually two boats getting tossed around in the waves that day. the coast guard always sends out two boats during training exercises. >> we train in those types of conditions to keep us positioned. todd: it's the same trained bravery depicted in the new movie "the finest hour" about a mission back in 1952. bernie weber and his crew of three from coast card chatham fought 60-foot seas in the dark of night to rescue 32 men. it's known as the greatest peacetime rescue. today the mission is the same but the technology is much better. >> he lost his compass. if you look around there's redundant systems.

doug: welcome back. following breaking news right now. a massive fire burning down a mill in fall river. this started around 3:00 this morning. karen: these pictures unbelievable. multiple fire departments on the scene. the eyeopener's frank holland is live right now with the efforts to get this under control. frank? frank: getting these flames under control has been a real struggle for firefighters. take a look here behind me. you're seeing a fire that has been raging for more than three hours. this is what's left of one of the sagamore mill buildings. i'm going to have my individualing on rafer dave monjo push in. i spoke to one firefighter here. he says this is literally the biggest fire he's ever seen.

all started at about 3:00 this morning. someone driving by saw the flames and called 911. when the first crews arrived they say they saw flames and fire and smoke in one corner of the building. thenhings quickly erupted. the flames erupted throughout the building right after that. shortly after they arrived they say the roof collapsed. they were able to keep the flames from spreading to an adjacent building. another sagamore mill building. they say this building was used for storage or manufacturing. they say it's in transition. they're not exactly sure what it's being used for at this time. as you can see water being poured on the building from one of the sides. firefighters are also trying to keep this fire contained from other buildings nearby. there's a kidney dialysis center very close to where we're standing right now. numerous fire departments on this scene. they're asking any fire department with available personnel to come out here and help.

us more information in just a few minutes. live in fall river, frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. doug: thank you very much. right now the f.b.i. is doubling the reward for the capture of this brazen bank robber they call the incognito bandit. newscenter 5's reid lamberty has the new plea for help in this case. reid: the f.b.i. has dubbed him the incognito bandit robbing banks wearing a mask, sunglasses, and a hoodie pulled over his head; but the violent manner which he employs is anything but camouflaged. christian fierabend: he enters the bank, displays a weapon immediately, and threatens the tellers. reid: recklessly flashing a semiautomatic handgun, the bandit says very little to his victim bank tellers. investigators say he chooses harsh action over words. christian fierabend: he walked over to the tellers, placed the weapon on the table, banged it down on the counter making it known that there was a gun. reid: the f.b.i. says this man is behind five area robberies-- the first on september 5 last year in woburn; the latest less than three weeks ago in billerica. surveillance video shows him

most spots going into the 50's. i thought it was february. i'm not so sure though. after you take a look and step outside later today. we do have the rain showers around now pushing just outside into chatham now and nantucket. other than that, you folks are starting to dry out back through falmouth and plymouth. but more showers on your dpoor step from the second push of weather that's coming on through. most of it though rain showers. you see on the radar, it could be snowy in the upper atmosphere. once it hits the ground it quickly mets. we're already warming up into the upper 30's and low 40's. the only exception is up through the berkshires but this is the back edge of it. once this gets on through-- and i think in the next couple of hours it will do just that-- we're going to start to dry out and see more sunshine later today. it's all from a warm front which means warmer temperatures on the way. and then we watch this system out to the south and west essentially. that's going to bring us another shot of wintery precipitation sunday night into first thing monday.

the timeline 7:00 into worcester by 9:00 maybe the north shore, boston seeing a couple of sprinkles or two and then it's out of here. watch what happens. we start to clear out the clouds and see sunshine. also you're going to see those winds, too, today out of the south and west. they're going to be anywhere from 15 to about 20 miles an hour sustained. be aware it will be a breezy day but that is also a warming wind. so we are going up to the mid 50's in boston. low 50's in worcester. mid 50's in taunton. nashua, 53. 55 in lawrence. we'll take it. then tonight we'll be in the 30's and 40's. a mild night on tap. it will be a partly cloudy night too and then tomorrow a lot of sunshine to start. the clouds build in in the afternoon out ahead of our system. temperaturewise still upper 40's, low 50's for highs tomorrow. so not as warm as today. but still running about 10 degree above where we should be this time of year. now once we get towards sunday

this area of low pressure rides well to the south. so i do think the best chances of seeing the precipitation is the farther south and east you go in our viewing area. by 8:00 though on monday has flipped over from rain to just some snow mainly south and east of the mass pike, i think. it's quickly out of here so that, you know, it's just really for the monday morning commute. it's really just nuisance snow. i don't think there will be major problems from it. high pressure builds in through the day giving us more sunshine by afternoon. when all is said and done, a widespread coating to one in this. not expecting much. expectate a lot of mixing on the cape and the islands. not really seeing much in materials of snow accumulation. however, that's not to say there's no more snow in the forecast. in fact, as you look towards tuesday night, wednesday and even into thursday, we're watching a storm system. there's actually two areas of low pressure that are going to come up. but it depends on the track. the track farther off shore is

it back up and running. doug: taxpayers in new jersey are now footing the bill for governor chris christie's legal services in the george washington bridge scandal. they've been billed more than $10 million. cases are still pending against some of christie's former allies, accused of causing tie-ups on the bridge as revenge for a mayor who didn't endorse christie. the governor has denied any involvement in the scheme. karen: the government is cracking down on hoverboards. according to new government standards, none of the hoverboards that are currently on the market now are safe. the consumer product safety commission sent a letter to manufacturers and retailers of the boards warning them to make the product compliant with the new rules. so far, 52 hoverboard fires are responsible for $2 million in property damage and the death of two dogs. there are lots of cooking competition shows for adults.

miles an hour with a breezy, mild day on tap. and it's going to be another mild day for your sunday but then big change s are on the way. we'll talk about the temperature drop and when we could see more winter precipitation. doug. doug: danielle, thank you. now. mill in fall river. this started around 3:00 this morning. are on the scene. live right now with the efforts to get this under control. frank? frank: you know, this is really a big mess. firefighters are really struggling to get this fire under control. take a look here behind me. you're looking at a fire that's been raging for more than three hours. we're also looking at what's left of the sagamore mill. our photographer pushed in. you can see this building collapsed. we spoke to the fire chief a short time ago. he said they were aware as soon as they arrived at the scene, this could be a very serious situation.

with the fish crews. i drove on weber street which is on the west side. i saw flames coming out about eight windows on the second floor. i was obvious that we lost this building as soon as we got here. frank: that fire chief tells me that building collapse came after crews arrived. this fire was called in by a passer-by aund 3:00 this morning. fire crews saw flames inside the windows of the mill. they did not send any personnel inside this building. they did call a general alarm. that means they needed every available firefighter here in the city of fall river to come out here help. also neighboring communities sent fire fight hes. when they got here a total of 12 trucks and more than 50 firefighters battled this fire. they also did their best to contain this fire just to this one building. you can see water on those neighboring buildings throughout the morning. fortunately they say that fire has not spread. also fortunately no injuries to

or police who are here on the scene. they say this is a building that's in transition. they believe there was possibly one business inside but again no one inside of this building. no injuries on the scene. the investigation is ongoing into what started this fire. they expect to stay here all day trying to put out these flames. live here in fall river, frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. >> flight there. >> the rope, the rope! karen: stunning video out of manchester, new hampshire. this is the moment first responders pulled a woman from the merrimack river. a 9-1-1 caller said she jumped into the frigid river. firefighters throwing a rope to the woman buying time before the rescue boat arrived. she was pulled in and rushed to the hospital where she's being treated for hypothermia. doug: another dramatic rescue-- this one in fall river. a state trooper pulling a teen out of a freezing creek after he fell through the ice. newscenter 5's john atwater has the team effort to save him. trooper kyle duarte: the water was up to his neck and they were holding him.

he wouldn't sink to the bottom. john: this state trooper heard the call and rushed over to help the boy's friends who were trying desperately to keep the 15-year-old's head above the icy water. the deep canal made the late-afternoon rescue even more difficult. trooper kyle duarte had the strength to lift the boy to safety. trooper: we picked him up over the wall, got him on to the ground. we were going to take his clothes off, wrap him a blanket. john: the boy was shivering but minutes in frigid seven-foot deep water. he was after this soccer ball which had fallen on to the ice while he and his friends were playing at the nearby field. trooper: he saw there was a sheet of ice on the canal, and he thought he could walk on the ice and retrieve his ball and hop back over the wall. john: but with the fluctuating temperatures recently, it was a dangerous move. and now a valuable lesson for other kids. trooper: he is definitely very lucky that his friends were there on scene keeping him afloat because, if they weren't, who knows what would have happened. john: that boy was taken to the hospital but thankfully he is

checking your economy this morning. it wasn't all good, but still the best week of the year so far for stocks. the dow, dropped 21 points to 16,391. the nasdaq up almost 17 points, and the s&p falling less than a point. despite the mixed finish yesterday, stocks finished up 2.5% for the week. karen: a senate committee is moving forward on legislation that would prevent states from requiring labels on genetically modified foods. vermont is set to require such labels this summer. the new legislation would block that law and create new voluntary labels for companies that want to use them on food genetically modified ingredients. the senate panel is scheduled to vote on the bill thursday. doug: we are getting closer to the age of space tourism. virgin galactic unveiling its new commercial spaceship. the spaceship-2, christened as destroyed in a devastating accident two years ago. the new spacecraft will need to go through a series of rigorous tests.

already paid $250,000 for a seat when virgin galactic eventually starts commercial operation. karen: to the weather now and we head to the midwest where strong winds are causing trouble. take a look at this. powerful winds overturned this semi in cedar rapids, iowa. there are reports of several other big-rig trucks being blown off the road across the state with wind gusts close to 60 miles an hour. doug: the windy city is really living up to its nickname. gusts up to 70 miles an hour had debris flying from two construction sites in chicago forcing evacuations of at least three city housing complexes. the blowing debris caused extensive street closures and shut down public transportation in some areas. at o'hare airport, some 160 flights are cancelled because of those powerful winds. danielle joining us now. the question is a little bit of rain, a little bit of weather. danielle: then it's out of here

how about the 50's. doug: i love the 50's. a light jacket. the beach. danielle: not quite. i do like the 50's too. i do like the little jacket. all right. let's talk about that weather though. as doug mentioned we have a little bit to go through right now. that's some rain showers pushing off the cape and the islands this morning. the temperatures there though already in the mid 40's so obviously it's in the form of some rain. a couple more showers now making their way into metro west into worcester and some of this you see some white on the radar. could be wet snow flakes coming down. once it hits the warm ground, it will melt on contact. not expecting any problems on the roads. this is the back edge of it. already clearing parts of western mass. so we are going to see the clouds clear out as we go through the day and we'll see more sunshine and much warmer temperatures. the reason? this warm front you see right on here bringing in the warmer air.

south, i point this out, it's our next weather-maker but it is very far south so it looks like the south coast, the cape and the islands, the best chances of seeing some light snow showers starting as rain showers turning to snow showers sunday night into monday morning. more on that in just a second. first let's talk about this today. notice by about 9:00 or so, we're out of here. a couple of showers maybe along the east coast of massachusetts still. otherwise, starting to see some clearing out in the western half of the state. and by lunchtime, everybody is starting to see more sunshine so it will be a mix of sun and clouds today and the other thing you're going to notice is those winds out of the south and west. miles an hour right now. pretty strong winds actually out there this morning. and they're going to hang that way through the day. of course, we'll see more sunshine by about 4:00 or so this afternoon. boston. the south shore, the cape, upper 40's. low 50's through the north shore

and low 50's in the worcester hills. tonight upper 30's, low 40's for overnight lows so it's a mild night. it's a dry night. get outside. do whatever you need to do. and then tomorrow a lot of sunshine to start. again upper 40's, low 50's but we are looking for a chance of some clouds and pre-sich taition. i think it real a comes in after midnight i would say. here we go. let me show you this on the timing on the future cast. notice that the track is pretty far south now. the models are updating. right now the threat of seeing anything at all is south and east of the mass pike. could be rain showers then slipping over to snow showers at the tail end of this. high pressure quickly builds in on monday. it's a nuisance snow. i just want you to be aware of that. it will start off with some rain and mix on the outer edge of the cape as well as the islands. not expecting much. just a coating to one inch. the big thing is we're all going back to school after school vacation week. that is why we're a little concerned with that. now it's once we head towards tuesday, wednesday and thursday,

we're watching two systems. it's all dependent on these tracks, what is actually going to happen. this first one looks to be on the cooler side so it will start off as some snow and then we'll start to flip over maybe to sleet or ice and then to some rain. again the track is very key determining what kind of precipitation we get. we could see all three of them, i think, although the latest models tending to track closer to us or move it right over top of us which would mean a warmer solution which would mean more rain than snow. i think we'll take that. doug. doug: we'll take it. all right, danielle, thank you. a check of sports this morning. the celtics falling to the utah jazz last night. derrick favors with 23 points and 10 rebounds to help the jazz. the celtics shooting poorly all night. isaiah thomas trying to keep boston in the game. he had 25 points and six assists fresh off his all-star appearance. the celtics lose 111 to 93. up next the celtics are at denver tomorrow. karen: it may be warming up here

doug: welcome back. we are continuing to follow breaking news out of fall river this morning. karen: the "eyeopener"'s frank holland is live on the scene of a massive fire that's destroyed a mill. frank? frank: it's been a long, difficult morning for firefighters. they arrived here at 3:00 this morning to a raging inferno, as you can see behind me. they're still trying to get these flames under control. very smoky scene as well. this over here, my photographer pushed in, you can see a number of firefighters trying to get the flames in the corner of this

that recently just flared up. this is known as the sagamore mill. firefighters say they got a 911 call about 3:00 this morning that it was on fire. when they arrived they saw flames inside the building. they quickly rushed to get those flames under control. and also stop those flames from spread to go nearby buildings. some good news here. they say they were no civil and yaz, firefighters or police officers injured. they'll continue to fight this fire all morning long. investigation. live here in fall river, frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. doug: great work down there. thank you very much. you can see they did have rain down there in fall river. danielle: the rain will be pushing on in just in the next hour or so. the other bad thing though with this wind, very strong winds out of the south anywhere from 10-20. that doesn't help with controlling a fire. as for today though, those winds are going to warm us up into the mid 50's for highs. once you get through this next batch of showers in the next two hours, we are going to clear things out and see a mix of sun and clouds.
