temperatures start to cool back down. in fact, tomorrow highs are in the upper 30's and low 40's with that wind coming out of the north and west at 5-15 miles an hour. now as we go towards wednesday and thursday, that is when the risk of precipitation comes back into the forecast. it's two systems. the first one on wednesday is an area of low pressure with an associated warm front. we're on the colder side of this one. i do think we start off with some snow. then there could be a period of icing especially for the interior as the coastline changes over to rain. but then very quickly overnight wednesday into thursday, everybody sees rain so that should all get washed away. we could see a period of pretty heavy, steady rain from this as that track has shifted farther to the west. we also are looking for the potential of very strong, gusty winds and there is the potential for some coastal concerns because the tides are astronomically high. we have to watch this one. may even hear rumbles of thunder
8:16 am

120 days until summer. yes, i know that's a long shot. let's talk about the temperatures though. they're mild in the upper 40's so far this morning. we will warm up into the low 50's. speaking of snow, where is the snow? so far this year only 25.4 inches. last year we were already at 98.7 inches. of course that was coming off the snowiest winter on record. not necessarily talking about snow on wednesday night into thursday. it's a rain event but it look like heavy rain, gusty winds are on a high impact. there is the concern for some coastal flooding because of high tides being astronomically high and there could be isolated thunder. sera and doug. sera: danielle, thank you. they help doctors save lives and help scientists pursue life-changing research. doug: tables specially designed not to vibrate made in mass. it may look like an ordinary factory, but what's being made here at kinetic systems in roslindale is anything but ordinary.

create these tables that float so the air table actually floats. doug: alan gertel offering up the simple description-- gertel: see, the table is floating. doug: --to what's actually the solution to a very complex problem-- creating platforms that can eliminate the tiniest of vibrations. we're talking movements so small it could be caused by electrical currents. gertel: as we add load to the table, the table will go down and then it will call for more air. the legs will fill up and become soft again and then float. doug: who would want such a table? at northeastern university researchers are using kinetic tables so they can examine proteins through a powerful microscope. when trying to look at something magnified at a molecular level, even the slightest movement would make it almost impossible. gertel: you put your equipment on top of it, and it rests on this cushion. you can look through the microscope, and everything is plain as day, clear and nice. doug: top hospitals throughout
8:25 am
called upon this local company to produce their so-called air tables which, in turn, has helped doctors essentially save lives. gertel: when you get right down to it, the equipment that they are using, putting it on top of our table is solving a very serious problem which they can't do without it. doug: almost every aspect of these tables, down to the smallest detail, is made at this family business. and with each shift-- gertel: it might be for an olympus microscope going into canada. doug: --a little bit of new england ingenuity and engineering goes along with it. gertel: we are very proud of the fact that we make a product in massachusetts that is used by many people all over the world. doug: things up don't even think about it. kinetic systems first started solving vibration isolation problems back in 1968. and since then they have pioneered many state-of-the-art developments in this field. okay. sunday, i know you have a lot of things to do out there.

49 on the vineyard. and in the lower 40's in the worcester hills. but the winds are a big player today just like yesterday. we have wind gusts now at about 20 miles an hour in plymouth, but they're out of the west. and that is a warming wind. so as we go through afternoon, we are going to warm up into the low 50's, maybe a few mid 50's downry long the south shore, lower 50's i think on the cape. and mid 40's in worcester, upper 40's in the merrimack valley. now tonight we will see increasing clouds and the chance of some rain especially the farther south and east you live. we're talking the cape, the islands, and the south coast with the best bet of seeing some of this rain. it's associated with this area of low pressure you see here down to the south. it's going to really clip our region. then that colder air is going to come in from that cold front to the north and west. let me show you the timeline. through the afternoon more clouds develop. we will warm up. and then here comes that rain about 11:00 tonight. starting at just plain old rain

down colder air. we could see a mix or even some snow down along parts of the cape and the islands. we could pick up a quick dusting at most. so a very low impact event tomorrow morning. i want to stress that. and then through the day tomorrow, we're going to see a lot of sunshine. the winds will be strong out of the north and west. and temperatures start to drop tomorrow. we'll be in the upper 30's and low 40's for highs. and then as we head through the workweek, here's what happens. tuesday is dry and cold. that sets up the tuesday night into wednesday a chance for some snow to begin turning to some ice and rain at the coast from our first system and then a second system comes in wednesday night into thursday bringing just plain old rain. so let me time everything for you. this first one is going to really just nick our area, i think, bringing us that chance for that snow and turning to some icing. the icing is my biggest concern but it all gets washed away by overnight wednesday into thursday as warm air out ahead

support is delivering a reliable, affordable, transparent, and efficient service. bill fine: "5 investigates"' kathy curran has uncovered a scheduling nightmare at the "t," allowing 1,800 drivers to hand-pick their work schedule. those with the least seniority end up with shifts that conflict with mandatory ten-hour rest intervals. the result-- drivers are paid to stay home and rest while others are paid overtime to cover for them. the total cost? in 2015 alone, the "t" paid drivers almost $400,000 to stay home and spent another quarter million in overtime for substitute drivers to pick up those shifts. this antiquated manual shift-pick system contributes to the problem. the t's chief administrator brian shortsleeve says switching to an electronic scheduling system would eliminate the waste. jim o'brien, head of the carmen's union, says it's an issue of safety but is willing to bargain. he would consent to a trial period to test electronic

consider a four-day work week. cutting waste and eliminating paid sleep time should not be an item for negotiation. it's in the interest of "t" management and the union to work together to fix the problem right now. concurrent with any discussion of rate hikes, we should all demand the reliable, affordable, transparent, and efficient service envisioned by governor baker. and while cutting this particular form of waste is a drop in the bucket, optics do matter and may make writing that $1 billion check slightly less infuriating for bay state taxp
