morning's breaking news with new information in just a minute. first we'll check with danielle. we're in the middle of a great, beautiful weekend. danielle: i love the warm weather that we're seeing, doug and sera. good morning. it continues for today so if you like it, you'll enjoy today. if you don't like it, just wait until tomorrow. 48 degrees in boston. 41 in booster. 45 in concord right now. and 49 degree on the vineyard. so it's a mild start. we have some pretty strong winds sustained anywhere from 10 to about 20 miles an hour right now. and that is warming things up. as we go through the day, we'll be in the low to mid 50's by about 1:00. and then we'll see more clouds increase through the afternoon into the evening. that's all associated with our next storm system. right now though, looking at mainly clear skies. more clouds working their way in from a cold front that is up to the north bringing some snow showers through parts of canada. and then we're watching this system down to the south.

some rain turning over to a mix or even some snow. we'll have the timeline coming you and also talk about the cooldown ahead. sera: thanks, danielle. breaking overnight. a frightening situation unfolding in michigan. doug: a series of random shootings in kalamazoo. our frank holland is tracking the new developments. frank: we have new information in this developing story. michigan state police now say at least six people were killed, two were injured. they also have identified the person they say is responsible for these cold blooded killings. 45-year-old jason dalton is in custody. the kalamazoo man is expected to face murder charges. investigators say dalton was driving around the city and opening fire on random people. a man and his son were shot and killed at this kia dealership. four others more were shot and killed outside of a cracker barrel restaurant. a 14-year-old girl there was injured. the shooting spree began at an apartment complex on saturday night. a woman was shot multiple times while she was standing outside with her three children.

serious condition. >> we have multiple people dead. in summary it looks like somebody just driving around finding people and shooting them dead in their tracks. frank: investigators say a weapon was found in dalton's car. he was taken into custody without incident after just before 1:00 this morning, so far police have not been able to figure out any motive for the murder spree the victims have not been identified. dalton is expected to appear in court on monday. jeb bush: the people of iowa, new new hampshire, and south carolina have spocken and i really respect their decision. so tonight i am suspending my campaign. doug: jeb bush getting emotional announcing he is out of the race for presidency. the former florida governor coming in fourth in the south carolina primary. donald trump and hillary clinton the big winners in the latest presidential contests. it's a second straight for trump. and florida senator marco rubio narrowly edging out texas senator ted cruz for second place in the south carolina

but the results are still unofficial. rubio: this has become a three-person race, and we will win the nomination. (applause) cruz: we are the only campaign that has beaten and can beat donald trump. the g.o.p. holds its caucus in nevada on tuesday while democrats face off in south carolina on february 27. sera: boston police find a loaded gun on a baby's bassinet. take a look at this picture. neighborhood drug control units in dorchester found the semi-automatic tucked under a pink blanket. officers also found heroin, cocaine, and about a thousand dollars cash. 33-year-old pedro valdez and 27-year-old lasonia gathers of dorchester were arrested on drug trafficking and gun charges. doug: right now a new move from health officials in boston to protect the city's homeless. newscenter 5's nicole estaphan with the the shelter offering a vaccination to prevent the spread of this potentially fatal infection. nicole: a rare infection, meningococcemia, has left one homeless man dead and infected two others in the span of a month. now the city is trying to reach out and vaccinate as many homeless men and women as possible.

statement from the boston public health commission saturday. quote, "the general public is not at risk. this illness requires very close contact (within three to six feet of an ill individual) for at least several hours to spread"-- something the homeless population sees a lot of during the cold winter months. the c.d.c. has supplied the city with thousands of doses of the vaccine at no cost. several hundred homeless individuals have already been vaccinated this week. shelter workers also receiving this vaccination. local hospitals have been put on alert to look for signs of this infection. in boston, nicole estaphan, wcvb, newscenter 5. sera: 5 on the opioid crisis. a new report highlights a staggering number of drug overdoses in new hampshire this month. according to american medical response, february has been a record month. in manchester alone, there have been 42 overdoses. four of them happened yesterday within a half hour of each other.

surpassed the record set last march. emergency crews say the main culprit is still fentanyl followed by heroin. >> i don't like being on television every week to tell people about these numbers. we need help. i don't know what that help is, but we need to work harder than we're already working to solve this problem because it is not getting any better. sera: the record number of overdoses is taking its toll on emergency staff that are dealing with the problem. a.m.r. says it affeccts every facet of the system. doug: only on 5 right now, hundreds of family and friends attending a memorial for a young brockton child who died last month. 12-year-old c.j. thompson was remembered for his million-dollar smile. in january he fell through an icy pond. close to 200 people filled a community center yesterday to share their memories. his mother says she was stunned by the turnout. organizers wanted to give c.j.'s classmates and neighbors a

it was below zero in spots. danielle: and now we're in the upper 40's and 50's today. doug: what you don't know is what we all do. danielle: more on that later. let's talk about that warmth though because yesterday we were 60 in boston and 55 degrees in worcester. yes, last sunday below zero in boston and worcester. so big changes a week will do. 52 degrees we're going for today but then temperatures start to tumble monday and tuesday. out ahead of a storm system. so that means when it comes through late tuesday night into wednesday, it could start off as some snow but quickly transitions to a mix and then just plain old rain. watching a storm system to our south right here. this one could bring some rain overnight tonight from the south coast, cape and islands. maybe transitioning to light period of snow or a mix. colder air also working its way in from this cold front. more on that in just a second but first we want to talk about

you see the camera shaking just a touch. the winds are out of the west at 17 miles an hour sustained it's 48 degrees. we had gusts as high as 35 miles an hour this morning. now starting to back down just a touch. 52 your high in boston today. 52 in taunton. 53 in marshfield. upper 40's through worcester and the mer rack valley. tonight we drop back into the 20's and low 30's. that's why when i say we start off with some rain, we will. but then it should transition to a mix or even some snow. here we go for today. clouds increase through the afternoon. here comes that rain. notice the south coast, the cape and the islands as far north as maybe plymouth. that's really about it. i think the extent of it. by 5:00 in the morning though, it's starting to transition for a little bit. that means we could pick up maybe a dusting at most. but it's out of here so quickly that it's a real low impact event and really only impacts the cape and the islands. at least in the morning hours. then we start to see a lot of

temperatures start to cool back down. in fact, tomorrow highs are in the upper 30's and low 40's with that wind coming out of the north and west at 5-15 miles an hour. now as we go towards wednesday and thursday, that is when the risk of precipitation comes back into the forecast. it's two systems. the first one on wednesday is an area of low pressure with an associated warm front. we're on the colder side of this one. i do think we start off with some snow. then there could be a period of icing especially for the interior as the coastline changes over to rain. but then very quickly overnight wednesday into thursday, everybody sees rain so that should all get washed away. we could see a period of pretty heavy, steady rain from this as that track has shifted farther to the west. we also are looking for the potential of very strong, gusty winds and there is the potential for some coastal concerns because the tides are astronomically high. we have to watch this one. may even hear rumbles of thunder

temperatures warm back into the 50's. then we drop back into if 30's over the weekend. sera: what a roller coaster. thanks, danielle. the other big stories we're following right now. doug: new york city police alerting the f.b.i.'s joint terrorist task force after the shootings of two officers. the officers responding to a call of a man with a gun. investigators say when they confronted the suspect, he pointed a gun at them before jumping a car sparking a chase. the suspect crashed his car into a police cruiser and was shot several times. he is in critical condition. both officers are expected to make a full recovery. sera: the end of an era. supreme court justice antonin scalia is remembered as a man who loved god, country, and family. yesterday's funeral mass capped two days of mourning. scalia's son paul, a catholic priest, led the service and mixed humor and reverence for the conservative icon and father of nine who died unexpectedly last weekend. among those in attendance, vice president joe biden and all eight sitting justices of the supreme court.

sera: lack of snow is forcing the cancellation of an annual sled dog race in new hampshire. the race was scheduled for next weekd, but the tamworth outing club and new england sled dog club say there's not enough snow cover on trails and the lake for races. the race was originally set for january. doug: so many of us enjoying the warmer temperatures, but there cheated. danielle: i know. we're going to get more binter weather tomorrow. hey, because it's feeling more like spring, i started thinking, how many days until spring actually officially starts? now. 50 days until the red sox home opener. 57 days for all you folks who are running the boston marathon. not a bad weekend to be doing

places with republicans caucusing in nevada tuesday and democrats holding their primary in south carolina next saturday. doug: frank, let's get back to out. reacting? frank: several of them mentioned bush in their speeches. to the campaign while marco rubio called him the greatest governor in the history of florida. rubio a senator from that state. doug: we'll see who else decides it's not financially worth it. frank: we'll keep a close eye on this one. doug: thanks, frank. sera: right now fire investigators are tracking down the cause of a deadly in natick. the woman who lived there died after being pulled from the burning home. the situation posed a few challenges for the rescuers trying to save her. central street house in natick around 7:30 saturday morning. reported by a fire lieutenant on his way to work. some smoke coming out the roof

we didn't see flames. there was a lot of smoke, but the fire department reacted really quickly. sera: while battling flames, firefighters searched the home and found a woman unconscious in a second-floor bedroom. one of the challenges firefighters faced in trying to reach the victim was a giant hole in the bedroom floor. firefighter: we were able to get around that hole, found the victim close to the second-floor window. sera: crews carried the woman out a window with a ladder, but she died shortly after at the hospital. 73-year-old carol mccarthy lived alone. >> it's horrible. you know, whether it's elderly or young, it's somebody's sera: investigators are working on a cause. the fire marshal's office says there's evidence smoke alarms were not working. the state's fire marshall's office says this is the 12th fatal fire this year, and the common thread they're seeing-- a lack of working smoke alarms. victims killed in a fire in groton last month has been

66-year-old douglas palmisano died january 28 when a fire broke out at his home on whiley road. another person was killed. their identity has yet to be released. still no word on what caused the fire. an investigation is ongoing. doug: two u.n.h. students are in jail accused of stabbing another student near the campus. matthew gibbons and eric denning are charged in the attack of the 20-year-old early saturday. the victim was found on madbury road. he had to undergo surgery for two stab wounds. right now a child is recovering after being hit by a car in taunton. police say the child was hit on paul bunker drive yesterday. the child suffered non-life threatening injuries. police say it appears to be an accident. the driver did remain on the

annie strother: i didn't think you know, it's a very scary situation. nicole: after nearly 30 years together, daniel and annnie strother thought they had seen it all until saturday when they were just a few blocks from the altar. daniel: all of a sudden the car caught on fire. when the car caught on fire, the brakes went, the flames started coming inside of the car. nicole: bride- and groom-to-be were in shock. daniel: everybody was saying, "just get out of the car, get out of the car" because the flames were just going all over the place. nicole: jumping to safety just in time. annie strother: he told me to jump. i think i jumped so high. nicole: but the symbol of their union still inside this now burnt-out car. daniel: then she reminded me, "the rings? where are the rings?" "oh, they're in the car still." nicole: firefighters were able to save the rings, and police saved the wedding. daniel: and he said, "wait a minute. would you like a police escort?" we got here faster than if we

sera: this morning we're celebrating black history month with a trip into the past right here in boston. frank is back with more on the african meeting house. frank: you could describe the african meeting house as the oldest black church in america. but really the building means much more. it's stands as landmark and a lesson. frank: it's the oldest black church in the u.s. and so much more. marito rivero: it was a church. it was a school. it was a community center. frank: the african meeting house opened in 1806. it's now a national landmark on beacon hill. marito rivero: it's a unique spot in america. frank: marito rivero is the executive director of the museum of african american history. marito rivero: this is the center of the black community in boston. frank: the african meeting house has been restored to exactly what it looked like in the mid 1800's. marito rivero: these people wanted a place of beauty.

49 on the vineyard. and in the lower 40's in the worcester hills. but the winds are a big player today just like yesterday. we have wind gusts now at about 20 miles an hour in plymouth, but they're out of the west. and that is a warming wind. so as we go through afternoon, we are going to warm up into the low 50's, maybe a few mid 50's downry long the south shore, lower 50's i think on the cape. and mid 40's in worcester, upper 40's in the merrimack valley. now tonight we will see increasing clouds and the chance of some rain especially the farther south and east you live. we're talking the cape, the islands, and the south coast with the best bet of seeing some of this rain. it's associated with this area of low pressure you see here down to the south. it's going to really clip our region. then that colder air is going to come in from that cold front to the north and west. let me show you the timeline. through the afternoon more clouds develop. we will warm up. and then here comes that rain about 11:00 tonight. starting at just plain old rain

down colder air. we could see a mix or even some snow down along parts of the cape and the islands. we could pick up a quick dusting at most. so a very low impact event tomorrow morning. i want to stress that. and then through the day tomorrow, we're going to see a lot of sunshine. the winds will be strong out of the north and west. and temperatures start to drop tomorrow. we'll be in the upper 30's and low 40's for highs. and then as we head through the workweek, here's what happens. tuesday is dry and cold. that sets up the tuesday night into wednesday a chance for some snow to begin turning to some ice and rain at the coast from our first system and then a second system comes in wednesday night into thursday bringing just plain old rain. so let me time everything for you. this first one is going to really just nick our area, i think, bringing us that chance for that snow and turning to some icing. the icing is my biggest concern but it all gets washed away by overnight wednesday into thursday as warm air out ahead

brings us very heavy rain on wednesday night into thursday morning. now there is also the potential for some coastal concerns as tides are astronomically high. we're going to have very gusty winds with this one. rainfall rates in excess of an inch to two inches in total from this. and maybe even a few rumbles of thunder as temperatures warm up into the low 50's. however, next weekend we turn back to winter. sera and doug. doug: we're not out of it yet. you want to get outdoors this winter, but you're not a skier> no problem. sera: chronicle's j.c. monahan discovered a ski mountain that expands the definition of winter fun for adilts and kids. jc: okemo mountain resort in ludlow, vermont, is about three hours from boston. it's not the biggest nor the flashiest in new england, but it is full of family fun. >> one of the things that okemo is all about is just a family experience.

sera: breaking overnight. police put an end to a deadly and random killing spree in kalamazoo, michigan. the sheriff's office says the suspect, 45-year-old jason dalton, drove around the city and randomly opened fire killing seven people and injuring three others. dalton is now in custody. the motive for the shootings is not known. doug: it is game over for jeb bush after disappointing results in south carolina. the former two-term florida governor failed to inspire voters and donors. bush came in 4th with just over 7%, well behind first-place finisher donald trump, marco rubio, and ted cruz. boston police find a loaded gun in a baby's bassinet. do you see it there on the right? officers executing a search warrant found the semiautomatic tucked under a pink blanket. they also found heroin and cocaine in the dorchester home. police made two arrests on gun and drug charges.

investigators are searching for the cause of this massive mill fire. it started around 3:00 a.m. saturday morning in the sagamore mill in fall river. the building collapsed under the intense flames. investigators say the mill was vacant and are looking for clues as to how the fire started. the coast guard is holding a week-long hearing on the sinking of the "el faro" cargo ship. recordings of the captain's call for help were played for the panel. the captain warning that the ship was taking on water as it sailed near the bahamas through hurricane joaquin. the investigation could result if evidence of criminal activity is found, the coast guard will turn it over to the justice department. doug: a new bill targets puppy mills in boston. city councilor matt o'mally wants to stop pet stores from selling dogs, cats, and other animals that they purchase from commercial breeders. o'mally tells "the globe" the vast majority of animals sold in pet stores come from large-scale breeding facilities and many do not care for the animals properly.

support is delivering a reliable, affordable, transparent, and efficient service. bill fine: "5 investigates"' kathy curran has uncovered a scheduling nightmare at the "t," allowing 1,800 drivers to hand-pick their work schedule. those with the least seniority end up with shifts that conflict with mandatory ten-hour rest intervals. the result-- drivers are paid to stay home and rest while others are paid overtime to cover for them. the total cost? in 2015 alone, the "t" paid drivers almost $400,000 to stay home and spent another quarter million in overtime for substitute drivers to pick up those shifts. this antiquated manual shift-pick system contributes to the problem. the t's chief administrator brian shortsleeve says switching to an electronic scheduling system would eliminate the waste. jim o'brien, head of the carmen's union, says it's an issue of safety but is willing to bargain. he would consent to a trial period to test electronic
