saturday evening. a woman shot several times in the parking lot of this residential but she survives. four hours later, in this car dealership parking lot, a father and his son shot and killed. within minutes, the gunman opens fire outside a cracker barrel restaurant. killing four in their car. including a former teacher, and wounding a 14-year-old girl. >> dispatch all units. suspect vehicle in a shooting. last seen at cracker barrel. >> reporter: just after midnight, police spot the suspect's vehicle and take him into custody without incident. the victims, police say, apparently selected at random. >> this is your worst nightmare. how do you go and tell the families of these victims that they weren't targeted for any reason other than they were there to be a target? >> reporter: 45-year-old dalton had no criminal record, and worked as an uber driver. his neighbors, in disbelief.

that could have been us, my daughter that got killed. >> reporter: authorities investigating whether the alleged gunman was taking fares in between shootings. matt mellon claims he was dalton's passenger just 70 minutes before the first shooting. he says he called 911 and feared for his life. because dalton was driving erratically. his fiance even warning others on facebook moments before the shooting. >> we were driving through medians, driving through the lawn. speeding along and finally once he came to a stop, i jumped out of the car and ran away. >> reporter: uber in a statement saying we're horrified and heart broken at the sense senseless violence. we've reached out to the police to help in any way that we can. from dalton's vehicle. he is expected in court tomorrow afternoon. >> alex perez, kalamazoo, michigan. >> a high profile hearing gets under way in a connecticut

a father and son were killed here. the third minutes later outside a cracker barrel restaurant where four people were killed in their cars including 60-year-old mary joe nye, a retired teacher. >> we have no reason to believe that there was more than one person involved in any of these incidents. >> reporter: the suspect jason dalton an uber driver was taken into custody hours after the final shooting. matt mullen says he was one of his customers saturday afternoon. the ride so frightening he called 911. >> we were kind of driving through medians, through the lawn, speeding along. finally once he came to a stop, i jumped out and ran away. >> in a statement uber says our hearts and prayers are with the families of the victims of this devastating crime. it's a crime not just heart breaking but baffling for police and dalton's neighbors. >> very unexpected. he was a quiet guy.

>> i was hoping for a little enrique iglesias hero. nickelback with that. heroes come in all shapes and forms but one grocery store clerk in north carolina was lucky enough to have several heroes just when he needed them most. >> and one of them was one of the last he would likely ever expect. here's abc's john donvan. >> i was really, really gone. and here i sit. >> reporter: michael kitty knows he very nearly died that day. the 60-year-old collapsed here a supermarket in valdez, north carolina where he was stocking shelves when his heart stopped. >> i need an ambulance. he's not breathing. i have a young man here he's trying to help us. >> reporter: this high school student james who was studying to be an emt was in the store and rushed over. he started administering cpr. >> i checked his respirations and his pulse. we didn't have anything. >> reporter: two nurses happened to be grocery shopping, too. they jumped into the rescue pushing on the chest of the man on the floor who now looked lifeless. >> he was laid on the floor, purple.
