emily: good morning. it is tuesday, february 23. i'm emily riemer. randy: i'm randy price. at 4:30, some of the stories we're following on the eyeopener right now. a popular toy blamed in another fire. the damage to one family's home. new answers in a massachusetts cold case. the details learned by "5 investigates." and the questions still remaining this morning. randy: camille cosby under oath. what happened behind closed doors. and why lawyers say it's not over yet. emily: we'll get to all those stories. first we want to check in with cindy though and a look at today. it is quite it for now.

have a winter weather advisory. it goes into effect at 4:00 4 afternoon. notice it's for areas outside of 128. we are going to see a burst of snow and then a changeover to sleet and freezing rain. that may make things a little bit slippery through tomorrow morning's commute. starting out in the teens and 20's across the area with just partly cloudy skies. you can see a bright full moon out there this morning. look off to the south. you can see all of this rain. this is lifting north ward, and it's going to run into that colder air so the temperatures don't come up a whole lot today. i think we hold in the mid and upper 30's to near 40 degrees with sunshine this morning and those clouds thickening up. spreading in. once we get past lunchtime, we're going to be watching some snow across the new york city area lift north ward so that by 5:00 p.m., it is closing in on the was the area. by 8:00 this evening, it's coming in around the boston area. so snow arrives between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. from south to north. it's going to change to rain though around midnight.

freezing rain across the interior. you can see that changeover happening here. we'll talk about how much snow i expect and step you through phase 2 of this storm. that's when heavy downpours arrive coming up in just a bit. now to the roads. let's see how we're looking out there. olessa: good morning, everyone. a live look outside here to start things off. the pike looks good by allston/brighton. eastbound moving to the top of the screen. let's get on the maps and see the rest of your trip. no complaints just yet. a little bit of overnight construction 93 south at the zakim. also on the expressway by mass avenue. once again south of town as you travel northbound on the expressway by east milton square. construction clearly shortly 24 north by 128 and then the pike looks good. more roadwork on the southbound side of 128 with only one lane open for another 20 minutes or so. this is from 4 and 225 down to route 2. we're expecting the trains and the buses to start the morning on schedule. randy. randy: thank you. right now on the eye, this woman is expected in court today as police search for her alleged partner in crime. police arrested jacqueline murphy yesterday after a stolen

saugus. the man with her, michael gouthro, took off. both were already wanted for attacking a revere police officer with a hypodermic needle on thursday before leading police on a chase there. emily: police are searching for the robbers who forced chipotle employees into the freezer at gunpoint. this happened sunday in dartmouth. the masked men attacking as employees took the trash out. the suspects did get away with cash. nobody was hurt. randy: a closer look at the damage to a chelmsford home blamed on a hoverboard. right now there are new concerns after the popular toy caused a fiery close call. emily: the eyeopener's kelley tuthill is live in chelmsford with a look at the damage. kelley: emily, all of this happening just as a child was riding the hoverboard right in the living room of this home on monmouth street. this is what's left of that toy. chelmsford's fire chief says it suddenly sparked and caught fire, catching the living room on fire. you can see the damage.

charred. the child wasn't hurt. this is just the latest incident with one of the devices which have been increasingly linked to fires caused by overheating batteries. just last week, the federal government warned that the toys do not meet safety standards. product safety commission is underway. several colleges in massachusetts have already banned hoverboards from campus because of safety concerns. live in chelmsford, kelley tuthill, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: right now we're learning what happened behind closed doors as bill cosby's wife testified about her husband. the eye's erika tarantal is here. and erika, it's not over yet? erika: good morning, randy. that's right. camille cosby will have to return for a second deposition. she spent seven hours under oath in springfield yesterday and only 2.5 of those hours were lawyers want to know what camille cosby knows about her husband's interactions with

defamation lawsuit against the comedian. that's after all seven accused him of sexual assault. much of the day was spent arguing about spousal privilege, and the judge had to be called in twice. but lawyers say justice will be served. >> at the end of the day, a jury is going to determine who has more credibility. is it the seven women that he represents or is it bill cosby? erika: camille cosby will be deposed again on march 14. been released. erika tarantal, wcvb, newscenter 5. >> a beautiful woman with a big, gold heart. emily: "5 investigates" uncovering a major break in a a mother found murdered in boston now has a name. this morning, we're hearing from that woman's daughter who has waited decades for answers. but there are still questions. milagros "millie" alvarado was last seen walking in fitchburg

her body, found buried at the stony brook reservation in hyde park that august. in december, millie's daughter cynthia and her family gave d.n.a. samples to the lab at the university of north texas. two months later, they got a match. >> it's a big deal. i mean she's been unidentified in 22 years. >> i never had her in my life before so it's nice to have her now. emily: a team of boston, state, and fitchburg police are now working together to bring justice for millie. randy: right now boston police are taking new steps to keep passengers safe in city cabs. the eyeopener's doug meehan is live in boston with the changes for those drivers. doug? doug: good morning, randy. police now want to fingerprint all cab drivers here in the city. and that process is already underway. fingerprinting started yesterday for boston's 6,000 cab drivers. police say this will allow them to conduct more thorough background checks.

tuesday. weatherwise it's a normal start. cindy: did you see the moon this morning? a full moon today. it's full for the morning hours this morning, yeah. we had a full snow moon. speaking of snow. emily: is it on the way. cindy: not a lot but we do have a winter weather advisory. this goes into effect at 4:00 this afternoon. it's up through noontime tomorrow. we're not expecting a lot of snow. just a little. and the changeover to sleet and freezing rain. that's going to make things slippery tonight away from the coastline. the colder air sitting to our north has been draining in. you'll notice it out the door this morning. 27 in boston rite now but this is below zero to the north. that cold air continues to drain down on a light northerly wind. the temperatures have dropped into the teens here in some of our coldest suburbs back from orange to jaffrey. 22 in worcester. 23 in beverly. there you see boston at 27. the 20's all the way down to the cape.

the worcester area, for example, our 22-degree high temperature here. it's not going to climb all that much. by late morning we're around the freezing mark. and then we hold in the 30's through the afternoon. all the while any sunshine will be fading and clouds are going to be thickening up here throughout the day. high temperatures this afternoon mid to upper 30's. near 40 degrees on the cape. so not as mild as it has been certainly the past few days. we're going to watch those clouds increase first. you can see what's happening. there are two areas of moisture i'm watching. this first one to the south is what is going to make run at us late in the day and tonight. there's more moisture behind that. that's what's coming as we get toward tomorrow night and thursday. so let me take you through it. first of all the clouds will increasing through lunchtime. then by 5:00 p.m., an area of moisture lifts out of connecticut. it will be snowing around connecticut at 5:00 this afternoon. and then that whole area is going to be lifting on in. i would say between about 4:00 this afternoon and 8:00 p.m. from south to north we'll watch that snow spread.

about midnight or so we're changing it over to rain here on the south shore and the cape. that rain line is lifting north ward so by early tomorrow morning it is raining in most areas but outside of 495, it going to be cold enough that there will be some lingering freezing rain. that's the concern with icing. in terms of the snow, a coating to an inch closer to the coastline. once you get outside of 128, it's about a one- to three-inch snowfall. not a lot. a lot of that will get washed away once we change on over to rain. look at the temperatures right through early tomorrow morning. below freezing here outside of 495 so that is a concern. even if we had lingering rain, it would be freezing on contact. so we'll get that first system to lift north ward tomorrow. then we watch the next one approach late in the day tomorrow, tomorrow night and early thursday. that is going to bring in a new slug of some very heavy rain and a strong southerly wind out ahead of it. so we can step you through that next batch of moisture coming on in. and again the heaviest looks like it is going to come here as we get toward late in the day.

through lunchtime tomorrow and then by the late afternoon, the rain starts to come down harder and then look at these downpours around midnight coming into the western part of the state. those will cross through the thursday morning commute. that will likely feature heavy downpours, some poor drainage flooding, a lot of ponding on the roads. heavy rain, gusty winds and the temperatures coming up into the 50's on thursday. clear this storm out friday. it looks like a pretty quiet weekend. i was thinking the temperature s would drop quite a bit this weekend. doesn't look like that will happen now. looks like we'll be back in the mid 40's. olessa: and 50 on monday. cindy: the last day of february that will be. olessa: thank you, cindy. very quiet start on the row. a live look outside expressway by the gas tank, the northbound side heading away. volume not too bad right now. let's check the overnight construction. clearing in the next 10-15. this project on 93 southbound over by the zakim bridge and the the northbound side of the expressway by mass avenue. more roadwork picking up shortly

east milton square and again on 24 by 128. west of town you're in good shape along the pike and route 9. your last construction zone should be gone in the next 10-15. that's on 128 southbound from 4 and 225 down to route 2. so far we're expecting the trains and buses to sport the morning on schedule. emily. emily: thank you. right now the uber driver charged with murdering six people in michigan is telling police he did it. the killer confessing as he faced a judge; his motive still a mystery. (inaudible) emily: jason dalton said very little in court yesterday. he's charged with shooting and killing a father and son at a car dealership saturday, then killing four women outside a cracker barrel. in between the murders, investigators say dalton picked up uber fares around kalamazoo. several passengers had complained about him in that time. >> i said something to him. i said, you're not the guy are you? he said no.

emily: uber says dalton passed a background check and became a driver less than a month ago. the company does not plan on making any changes to the way they screen drivers. randy: 11 minutes before 5:00. your economy headlines this tuesday. the mbta has set the date to vote on proposed fare hikes. the fiscal and management control board will deliberate at its next meeting on february 29 before a vote on march 7. the proposal would raise fares anywhere from 6.7% to 9.7%. logan airport will soon offer nonstop service from boston to lisbon, portugal. the airline "tap portugal" will launch the daily flights starting on june 11. the company hopes to tap massachusetts' large portuguese community as well as provide a quicker route to southern europe. asian stocks were mostly weaker overnight as investors keep an eye on the price of crude oil. the price per barrel dropping again after a surge yesterday

right now, u.s. stock futures are lower. emily: a new report shows a dramatic increase in the number of mastectomies over the last decade. the u.s. department of health and human services reports a 36% increase from 2005 to 2013. the rate of women without cancer getting the procedure doubled over that time. experts say the report highlights a willingness to treat the procedure as a preventative measure to stop breast cancer. randy: trending stories. wildlife officials are investigating the deaths of thirteen bald eagles near a farm in maryland. authorities believe they may have been poisoned by a chemical sprayed on the field. it's the largest single die-off of bald eagles in the state in thirty years. a reward is now being offered for information. emily: new research finds sea levels are rising faster now than they have in nearly 3,000 years. scientists came to the conclusion after reconstructing the earth's sea levels over the last 2,800 years. nasa reports the ocean is

randy: good morning. it is 4:54. time for your early "news to go." emily: a 16-year-old boy is being held without bail this morning accused in a deadly stabbing. police arrested amari pope in the stabbing death of a 15-year-old in dorchester. prosecutors say he confessed. they claim it started with an argument between pope's girlfriend and the victim, deon hopkins. randy: a 76-year-old man is in the hospital with serious injuries after he was hit by a car in natick while crossing the street. it happened at mill street and ranger road. police say the 19-year-old driver did stay on the scene and has not been charged. the victim was airlifted to umass memorial medical center in worcester. emily: the state fire marshal is offering a $5,000 reward for information on this fire. it destroyed a mill in fall river on saturday morning.

firefighters are looking to see how this fire started. randy: a new state law takes targeting fentanyl trafficking goes into effect today. it's meant to help officials get the drug off the streets. anyone caught with more than 10 grams of fentanyl will face up to 20 years in state prison. fentanyl is commonly mixed with heroin and can be deadly in very low doses. the superintendent of boston public schools says an investigation into the racial climate at boston latin school is closed. superintendent tommy chang met with the local naacp yesterday and reiterated support for headmaster lynne mooney teta. black community leaders have called for her resignation claiming she mishandled several cases of racism involving students. a report claims she handled all but one incident appropriately. emily: celtics on the road in minnesota. down most of the game, they stage a late rally against the timberwolves. avery bradley gets the c's within one with just nine seconds to go. but minnesota makes a clutch

>> are you proud of him tonight. >> yeah, i'm very proud of him randy: sean says he wants to play for the bruins, but if that's doesn't work out, he might just follow in dad's footsteps. a great fallback. emily: he has great plans there. cindy: that's awesome. all right. we are in the last week here of february. this is the last tuesday of the month. it's been a pretty mild stretch. yesterday we snuck into the lower 40's. 50's on sunday. 60 on saturday. so the last thing you're probably thinking about is snow. but we are going to see some here as we get toward this evening. we'll start out with a little sunshine but we're clouding over today. i think snow arrives between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. from south to north with high temperatures today struggling through the 30's to near 40 degrees. we do have a winter weather advisory that goes into an fect at 4:00 this afternoon away from the coast. really it's outside of 128 through the interior. it's a brief period of snow and then sleet and freezing rain coming in through tomorrow morning. that could make tomorrow

slippery. it's only about 1-3 inches away from the coastline but just enough certainly to make things slippery. the set-up has colder air draining down from the north. at the same time we're watching some moisture from up in the south. so teens and 20's out the door this morning. and there you see that moisture that is lifting north ward. it will bump into that colder air and provide that wintery weather starting later on today. but this is just the first i'm watching. there is another one behind it. and this one is going to bring some heavy downpours in here by the time we get toward wednesday night and thursday morning. so it is a messy stretch here through the middle of the week. that second storm not only is going to bring very heavy rain but also very strong wind. can't even rule out a little bit of thunder with that. that comes wednesday night into early thursday. downpours for the morning commute on thursday. look at those high temperatures though. mid 50's on thursday. and then we're cooling it down behind it with clearing skies on friday. pretty quiet weekend setting up.
