rain from d.c. on south ward. as it bump into the colder air, that is going to produce our snow. so sunshine short lived this morning. temperatures coming up under the clouds. only into the upper 30's this afternoon. and you can see by about 5:00 this afternoon, there's the snow filling in across connecticut. that is closing in on the boston area through 8:00 p.m. and then as we approach midnight we're going to start to see that changeover of snow to some sleet. freezing rain and eventually all rain and over the interior, that freezing rain could linger into the earl he part of your wednesday as well. so it's a little slippery for the early commute morning. 1-3 inches of snow once you get outside of 128 but just enough to make things slippery. let's take advantage of this quiet weather commute while we can. let's see how we're doing out there. olessa: we are watching one problem spot in newton early this morning. this is on route 9 eastbound by center street. the road is closed right now for an accident involving an overturned car. if you're heading that way, keep that this mind. we'll keep you posted as soon as that reowns. we're building those delays

me here on monmouth street. take a look at the photos. this is what's left of that toy. chelmsford's fire chief says it suddenly sparked and caught fire catching the living room on fire. you can see the damage. a rug and the wall of the room charred. the child wasn't hurt. this is just the latest incident with one of the devices which have been increasingly linked to fires caused by overheating batteries. just last week, the federal government warned that the toys do not meet safety standards. an investigation by the consumer product safety commission is underway. several colleges in massachusetts have already banned hoverboards from campus because of safety concerns. kelley tuthill, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: right now a 76-year-old man is in the hospital with serious injuries after he was hit by a car in natick. it happened at mill street and ranger road. police say the 19-year-old driver did stay on the scene and has not been charged. the victim was airlifted to umass memorial medical center in

he was hit. right now the woman arrested in a wild chase is preparing to head to court. this morning police are still searching for her alleged partner in crime. police arrested jacqueline murphy yesterday after a stolen car chase led to a crash in saugus. the man with her, michael gouthro, took off. both were already wanted for attacking a revere police officer with a hypodermic needle on thursday, before leading police on a chase there. >> she was this big, beautiful woman, with a big, gold heart. emily: "5 investigates" uncovering a major break in a 22-year-old cold case. a mother found murdered in boston now has a name. this morning, we're hearing from that woman's daughter who has waited decades for answers. but there are still questions. milagros "millie" alvarado was last seen walking in fitchburg in june, 1994. her body found buried at the stony brook reservation in hyde park that august. in december, millie's daughter cynthia and her family gave

university of north texas. two months later, they got a match. >> it's a big deal. i mean, she's been unidentified for 22 years. >> i never had her in my life before so it's nice to have her now. emily: a team of boston, state, and fitchburg police are now working together to get justice for millie. randy: new this morning. a newly released audit shows a former mbta worker who racked up the most overtime in one year was approving his own o.t. "the herald" reports the maintenance worker logged more than 2,600 hours of o.t. in 2015. that inflated his salary to nearly $330,000 a year. the audit concluded there was no inappropriate conduct by employees but did call for more formal policies on overtime. the new report as the "t" announces new details on looming fare hikes. the eye's doug meehan is live in boston with what commuters need

doug: hi, randy, good morning. this morning we have a better timeline on when we'll learn how much more it will cost to take the "t." the mbta's finance board will debate the fare hikes at a meeting next monday with a vote planned for march 7. the "t" says some 8,000 riders have participated in public forums on the hike proposals and that most say they don't support raising fares because the current service doesn't justify it. among the proposals, one that would hike fares nearly 10% while another caps increases at closer to 7%. the "t" also announced its operating budget deficit has been trimmed to $95 million. we're live in downtown boston this morning, doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: right now we're learning what happened behind closed doors as bill cosby's wife testified about her husband. the eye's erika tarantal is here. and erika, it's not over yet? erika: emily, that's exactly

degrees. marshfield, taunton. otherwise upper 30's ought to do it for high temperatures today. here is the moisture. it's around washington d.c. this morning. but as it lifts north ward and bump into the colder air, that's going to be our snow for late today but that is only the first system i'm watching. there is another one. and this second one is going to produce a lot of severe weather down along the gulf coast today and for us, it can bring some thunderstorms by thursday morning. it is likely going to bring some real heavy downpours to the area so messy weather the next couple of days. let me step you through the timeline. first things first. the clouds are going to be increasing through lunchtime. as we get toward the evening hours, 5:00 this afternoon, notice the snow filling in across connecticut and rhode island. this will overspread the greater boston area through 8:00 this evening. and then make its way on up into new hampshire. by midnight we're already changing it over to rain along the immediate coastline especially south of boston. that changeover to rain is going to encompass most of the area by tomorrow morning at

however, outside of 495 at low levels it will still be cold enough that that rain is likely going to be freezing on contact. we may have some lingering ice here through the first half of the day on wednesday through parts of northern worcester county and up into southern new hampshire but along the coastline tomorrow we will sneak in to the 40's. that's the first wave going on by. number two that approaches late wednesday. wednesday night into thursday morning. heavy downpours. thunder is a possibility. could lead to some poor drainage flooding. the went potential very similar to last week. could see gusts early thursday up around 50 miles per hour. so we've got a wind-swept, soaking rain wednesday night into thursday morning. and look how much rain is expected to fall here anywhere from one to two inches of rain across the area. so a soaking rain on the way and then we'll dry things out starting friday and into the upcoming weekend. let's get you out to those roads right now. dry for now. olessa: yes, they are. we are watching one problem spot eastbound side of route 9 in newton.

in between the murders, investigators say dalton picked up uber fares around kalamazoo. uber says dalton passed a background check and became a driver less than a month ago. the company does not plan on making any changes to the way they screen drivers. emily: your economy this morning. asian stocks were mostly weaker overnight as investors keep an eye on the price of crude oil. the price per barrel dropping again after a surge yesterday which lifted energy stocks. the dow jumped more than 200 points, but u.s. stock futures are down right now. mastercard is trying out a unique fraud-prevention approach. the company is launching technology so you can use selfies and fingerprint scans to approve online purchases. they say passwords are too easy for scammers to guess. you have to download the mastercard identity check app to use your pictures to pay. new this morning. when it comes to working out, running can be pretty basic.

randy: right now boston police are taking new steps to keep passengers safe in city cabs. the eyeopener's doug meehan is live in boston with the changes for those drivers. doug: hi, randy. police now want to fingerprint all cab drivers here in the city, and that process is already underway. fingerprinting started yesterday for boston's 6,000 cab drivers. police say this will allow them to conduct more thorough background checks. mayor marty walsh says the goal is to make sure riders are as safe as possible. mayor: i think, you know, we're not looking for people that might have a record and not be able to drive but people that might have serious records that are concerning to people. doug: the city's police commissioner is also calling for fingerprinting drivers of ride-share companies uber and lyft. legislation to require those changes is pending. we're live in boston, doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5.

employees at a dartmouth chipotle robbed at gunpoint. watch as they're forced into the freezer. right now police are trying to find the gunmen before they strike again. the two masked men were waiting outside by a back door sunday night when employees went to take the trash out. surveillance video then shows them forcing the workers back into a walk-in cooler. then one suspect forces another employee into an office, struggling with the manager. he was able to make a run for it and called 9-1-1 from across the street. >> if they're capable of doing it once, they're capable of doing it again. >> it's scary because a lot of people apply to jobs like this at our age. emily: those gunmen did make off with cash. after finding the cash drawer along route 6, police are certain they had a car waiting. randy: salem new hampshire's finance director is off the job and facing criminal charges this morning. jane savastano was arrested for shoplifting friday during her lunch break. police say she left the macy's

of items she didn't pay for. the town is launching an internal investigation to review its own accounts and has hired outside prosecutors to handle savastano's case. she's been on the job since 2005. 5 on the opioid crisis. the drug overdose epidemic taking center stage in washington. governors of all 50 states are endorsing a plan to boost prescription drug monitoring programs nationally. the national standards would limit the supply of painkillers being handed out to the public. president obama has expressed skepticism about limiting opiate prescriptions. emily: a bill to legalize marijuana is moving forward in vermont. a senate committee approved the bill on monday, and it now heads for a vote in the full senate. the law would allow possession of up to an ounce of marijuana. it would also create a controlled system for growing and selling it. governor peter shumlin says he strongly supports the measure. still ahead this morning, saying "thank you" to first responders.

the eyeopener team ready with your news to go in chelmsford, boston, and following the fallout from the cosby deposition. randy: but first cindy has your forecast. a nice start to the day. but an interesting finish. cindy: behind door number one or door number two. take your pick. we have both of them coming in our direction. through about noon on thursday. emily: not going to be great. cindy: messy weather to get through. enjoy your morning. this is the best i have to offer you today with partly cloudy skies out there now. it's cold. in the 20's out the door. 28 in boston right now. we're going to watch this moisture come around d.c. on south ward bump into that colder air. as it does so, it's going to allow snow to break out around here. so the clouds fill in today. snow is going to arrive between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. temperatures coming up into the upper 30's to near 40 degrees today with a light easterly wind. winter weather advisories go into effect starting at 4:00 this afternoon into tomorrow morning. the concern is for some slippery travel. it's not so much the amount of snow that we're expecting. only about 1-3 inches and then a

plain rain as well. but that freezing rain could linger into early tomorrow morning. let me step you through the timeline. here are the clouds filling in through noontime. the snow is filling in across connecticut. then it overspreads greater boston through 8:00 this evening and then it makes its way up into southern new hampshire through midnight. also notice at midnight we're changing it over to rain here. the south shore and the cape. that rain line is going on continue to lift north ward. by 5:00 tomorrow morning most of us are seeing just light rain but this area here from southern new hampshire into northern worcester county is freezing rain. that may linger into about noontime or so tomorrow. then there's going to be a little lull in the action. then we'll watch this second system its going to produce a lot of severe weather today, press toward us as we get toward wednesday night and early thursday. because this storm tracks to our west, it's going to stay and bring some warmer air on in so heavy downpours, thunder, could lead to poor drainage flooding. we could see wind gusts over 50 miles per hour here early in the day on thursday. look at those temperatures into the mid 50's here on thursday.

let's get you out to the roads right now, olessa. still trouble spots out there. olessa: on route 9 eastbound. thank you, cindy. you can see sky 5 over the scene and the right lane still shut down after an early morning incident there. let's get to the maps. i'll show you where it is. a car that took down the utility pole. the right lane is closed by center street. give yourself the extra time. south of town delays now building route 3 out of weymouth. 24 in randolph and also 95 from sharon up to 128. route 3 north by bergen park way. an accident blocks the lane and an accident cleared by furnace brook on the expressway. still 20 minutes braintree to boston. eastbound on the pike you're about 20-25 now, 495 to 128. and then 93 south some involve oom out of methuen. more delays as you trfl down to spot pond pan approaching the leverett connector. the trains and buses still running on schedule. randy. randy: a four-year-old boy is now safe after he was found here wandering along blue hill avenue in dorchester.

camille cosby will be deposed emily: a cambridge police officer is on leave after a hit-and-run crash involving a bicycle. a woman was hit while riding a broadway and portland streets sunday night. off-duty officer who left the scene. no charges have been filed. and the officer's name has not been released. the woman was not seriously hurt. randy: president obama's plan to shut down guantanamo bay will be submitted to congress today. the president has long vowed to close the facility and convince lawmakers to allow the defense department to move nearly 60 detainees to the u.s. white house officials say it would save as much as $180 million per year in operating costs. congress had opposed plans to close the prison. emily: a big day for republicans. the nevada caucuses are today. right now donald trump is leading in the polls there. and a shake-up for the ted cruz

cruz fired his spokesman after he posted a video wrongly accusing marco rubio of dismissing the bible. randy: a controversial suggestion. the mayor of ithaca, new york, wants his city to host the nation's first supervised injection facility. it would provide a safe space where addicts can inject illegal drugs like heroin safely. he says nurses or physicians could quickly administer an antidote if a user overdoses while addicts could get clean syringes and be directed to treatment and recovery programs. emily: a 76-year-old man is in the hospital with serious injuries after he was hit by a car in natick while crossing the street. it happened at mill street and ranger road. police say the 19-year-old driver did stay on the scene and has not been charged. the victim was airlifted to umass memorial medical center in worcester. randy: this woman is expected in court today as police search for her alleged partner in crime.

murphy yesterday after a stolen car chase led to a crash in saugus. the man with her, michael gouthro, took off. both were already wanted for attacking a revere police officer with a hypodermic needle on thursday before leading police on a chase there. emily: the state fire marshal is offering a $5,000 reward for information on this fire. it destroyed a mill in fall river on saturday morning. the building collapsing under massive flames. investigators say it was vacant and they are now searching for the cause. randy: right now firefighters in california are battling a massive blaze at a warehouse in rancho dominguez. the second alarm fire engulfed the building. dozens of firefighters trying to get the fire under control. the area has several large warehouses and industrial buildings. no one has been hurt. the cause is under investigation. emily: there's an unusual plan up for discussion today. the division of fisheries and of venomous timber rattlesnakes

the endangered snakes are indigenous to the state but have some residents are worried the snakes would escape the island. but one state official says it's unlikely because there's plenty of food and places to hibernate. randy: logan airport will soon offer nonstop service from boston to lisbon, portugal. the airline "tap portugal" will launch the daily flights starting on june 11. the company hopes to tap massachusetts' large portuguese community as well as provide a quicker route to southern europe. emily: new research finds sea levels are rising faster now than they have in nearly 3,000 years. scientists came to the conclusion after reconstructing the earth's sea levels over the last 2,800 years. nasa reports the ocean is currently rising at a rate more than double that between 1900 and 2000 when the sea level rose 5.5 inches. scientists say global warming is to blame. randy: a new report shows a dramatic increase in the number of mastectomies over the last decade.

upper 30's for high temperatures this afternoon. we've got a winter weather advisory that goes into effect starting at 4:00 this afternoon for a little burst of snow that comes in. and then it's going to change over to a wintery mix and eventually all rain overnight. not a lot of snow. about 1-3 inches outside of 128. but just enough to make things slippery. as we get toward 5:00 this evening, here comes the snow out of connecticut. it is filling in around greater boston through 8:00 this evening. snowing at a pretty good clip through about midnight. thereafter we're going to start to see the changeover. this pink area right here, southern new hampshire, northern worcester county, typical spots may hang on to cold enough temperatures that some freezing rain lingers into the first part of the day tomorrow. a little lull in the action and then late tomorrow into thursday , we get another batch of some heavier rain coming on in and that is going to come with some downpours mainly with poor drainage flooding and strong wind gusts over 50 miles per hour. that will send the temperatures into the 50's. mild changes coming up for thursday.
