abc is the place to ben oscar night, sunday at 7:00 eastern emily: breaking news off the top at 4:30. severe thunderstorms are barreling though the region. randy: the strong wind and heavy rain taking down trees and limbs all over the place, the storm damage we are tracking now. randy: a teenager killed on her way to school, her younger brother, critically injured. the investigation into the devastating crash. emily: and donald trump on the attack, the comment mitt romney made that led to a fiery response. but first, cindy is tracking a thunderstorm warning in parts of our area. cindy: one severe thunderstorm warning to pass along. it is for areas of south of boston. it is until 5:00 this morning.

lighting and downpours. it is the one that has been damaging. we have seen wind gust in excess of 70 miles per hour. the severe thunderstorm watches up, including boston and all of eastern massachusetts. you can see the line working now. the most intense storm at this point is south of boston. we have been watching this storm. it has been producing strong wind. we want to zoom in tiger. we had intense storms out there. we are going to continue to deal with these thunderstorms the next couple of hours and things should list ft offshore. emily: tens of thousands of people are without power because of these storms. the intense weather, causing street flooding, brain down

randy: julie is in boston and a dorchester neighborhood with the damage. >> what a mess this storm has left behind. huge tree down on a home here. we want to give you a look at more damage that happened in cambridge this morning. a tree down on some cars. it happened just after midnight today. no one injured. no one appeared to be in those cars. what a mess to wake up to as people are on their way to work this morning. i will give you a closer look of this tree on a home here in dorchester, coming up. emily: thank you.

re going to dodge puddles on the main road and some of the downed tree limbs on the side roads. a live look at the pike, a little while ago i was seeing flashes of lightning. to the maps, check out the rest of your ride. the main roads are in pretty good shape. there is some ponding on the roadway. you will drive through some of that. west of town, no major issues. expect downed trees and downs power lines. so far, we are expecting trains and buses to start on schedule. randy: right now a crash that killed a 17-year-old and critically injured her brother is being investigated. it happened in barre as the teenagers were on their way to police say brittany murch of hubbardston lost control of her vehicle. it slammed into a tree on route 62. that split the vehicle in two. murch died at the scene, her 15-year-old brother griffin was pulled from the wreckage. school had been delayed for two hours on wednesday because of

emily: right now massachusetts state lawmakers are returning for the first full day back at work since the fbi raid targeting state senator bryan joyce. the eyeopener' s todd kazakiewich is at the state house with the new developments in the case. >> the new developments of may increase calls here for senator joyce to resign. it was just last week fbi and irs agents raided her law office in kansas. the globe is reporting federal her local college. for legislation on clean energy projects.

victim is the victim of a media circus. we will keep you posted. randy: a former massachusetts governor and presidential candidate is jumping into the race for the white house. but in a way that surprises many. erica is here with mitt romney' s shot at his party' s early front-runner. erika: this latest fight coming just hours before another gop showdown. former republican nominee mitt romney saying there might be a bombshell somewhere in trump' s tax returns, which have not been released. >> he is not near as wealthy as he says he is or he is not been paying the kind of taxes we would expect him to pay or he has not been giving money to the vet or the disabled, like he has been telling us he is doing. erika: four years ago romney asked for, and received, trump' s endorsement for president.

romney in typical trump fashion, on twitter, mitt romney, who totally blew an election that should have been won and whose tax returns made him look like a fool, is now playing tough guy. when mitt romney asked me for my endorsement last time around, he was so awkward and goofy that we all should have known he could not win. the gop field debates tonight in texas with super tuesday now just days away. emily? emily: on the democrat side, hillary clinton is in south weekend' s primary. yesterday she picked up an endorsement from senate minority leader harry reid. reid says he thinks the party should back the former secretary of state and move past the current primary season as quickly as possible. bernie sanders will spend the first part of his day in ohio. he was on the trail in missouri yesterday speaking to crowd of supporters in kansas city. sanders has said he will return to vermont next week to vote in the super tuesday primary there. massachusetts also votes on super tuesday. randy: this morning uber is hinting it could leave boston over a proposed crackdown on drivers. this week, boston'

commissioner said he' d like to see the rideshare company fingerprint its drivers like the city is doing with taxi drivers. house speaker robert deleo says he' d consider that as part of legislation in the works on beacon hill. uber' s boston general manager called that process ineffective and told wgbh the company has been forced to exit certain markets because of similar regulations. emily: right now a billion dollar casino project in everett is on hold. and this morning that is pitting one city against another in a bitter battle. wynn resorts says the project could be delayed up to a year after the city of somerville filed an appeal of an environmental permit granted for part of the project. that means no groundbreaking in april and a hiring freeze impacting as many as 4,000 people. somerville' s mayor is standing firm but so is wynn. >> we are fighting for the

silverado, the #1 sellingnfull size truck in new england. randy: new this morning, a grim picture of the nation' s highways. a new aaa report found 90 people die in car crashes every day and how they think about safety may be playing a role. for instance, 90% said they think texting or emailing while driving is dangerous. but 42% said they' d done it in the past month. 70% admitted they' d talked on the phone even though they were concerned about distracted driving. and most drivers said they hate people who run red lights even as 39% admitted to doing just that. emily: the state now cracking down on people who use handicap parking spaces and don' t really need them. the inspector general has found widespread abuse of the placards outside the state transportation building. a driver gets caught using a

emily: take a look at this -- an 18-wheeler overturns on the george washington bridge in new york city. randy: it' s being blamed on strong wind. that storm system, spawning tornadoes and leaving a trail of destruction along the east coast. in waverly, virginia, a 2-year-old boy, died in a tornado. three other people have now died because of storms in that state. right now emergency responders are digging through more debris in search of any other victims.

roof. it was scary. randy: the national weather service says the waverly tornado was the only confirmed twister in the state but several others are suspected tornadoes. cindy: i think in the next hour, we will see improvement. through 5:00, we have these severe thunderstorm watch across a good portion of our coastline. south of boston and eastern bristol county, you' re going to get a lot of lightning. look at these blue squares. this is where we have damage from wind overnight. debris in the road, you need to be prepared for it.

gusts. beverly, we gusted over 50. it is when you get the storms to come through that we get our strongest wind. the severe thunderstorm watch up until 5:00 a.m.. you can see the storms are racing northeastward. we look at the live radar now. once storms. here on the south shore, that is where we are seeing the storms now. we are to continue to track these. there has been a lot of lightning within these. showing up, that is where we have intense downpours and we down with these.

of the screen. not watching overnight construction. pike, doing fine. north of town, much of the same. buses on schedule. randy: take a look at this video out of tampa a fedex driver swerving all over the road even another driver recorded the delivery driver slowing down to 5 miles an hour before speeding up completely out of control. , he then pulled up to the truck, got the driver to pull over and took his keys. it' s not clear if the fedex driver was nodding off or impaired but he will not face charges. when police arrived he had already taken the keys out of the ignition. emily: apple is making new moves in its privacy battle with the fbi. there are reports that the tech company has started a process to upgrade it' s security to make it impossible for the government, or even apple, to break in to a

emily: we are following breaking news overnight. randy: a storm system is causing trouble on our doorstep. a tree crushed a parked car. there are reports of large lens and trees down all over the area. emily: new allegations against state senator bryan joyce just days after fbi and irs agents raided his canton law offices. is investigating joyce' s involvement in a massive solar project at stonehill college. joyce represented stonehill and the company that installed thousand solar panels at the pushed for legislation on clean energy projects. leave boston over a proposal to fingerprint all taxi and uber' s boston general manager

and told wgbh the company has been forced to exit certain markets because of similar regulations. emily: the weymouth man charged with hitting a pedestrian while driving drunk arraigned from his hospital bed. thomas mohan is being held without bail on drunk driving and other charges. cell phone video caught mohan falling flat on his face after his arrest tuesday. police say he hit a pedestrian, then crashed his car. the pedestrian is still hospitalized in critical condition. randy: health officials say 3 pregnant women have tested positive for the zika virus in florida. all 3 cases are believed to be travel-related. 32 cases have now been reported in florida, again, all travel related. but the virus can be spread by bites from mosquitoes that are common in florida. emily: senator elizabeth warren is proposing a bill to help fight opioid abuse. right now when a patient receives a prescription, it must be filled with the exact about of medication prescribed. that means there could be pills left over. warren' s bill allows for the partial filling of opioid

make sure no left over pills are available for abuse. randy: an e-cigarette explodes inside a man' s pocket. this is surveillance from a kentucky gas station. the man was buying snacks when the e-cigarette battery in his pocket caught fire. s pants and skin began to burn. he quickly grabbed the fire extinguisher and sprayed the man. that man is now recovering from second degree burns. emily: the b' s put an end to their at home losing streak. david pastrnak had two goals, including his first career made penalty shot. jimmy hayes, landon ferraro and brad marchand also scored for the bruins. they top the pittsburgh penguins the b' s head to north carolina to take on the hurricanes tomorrow night. randy: a tribute to music icon ray charles. president obama hosted the event at the white house last night. the program included performances by usher, leon

this is shifting northward. it is going to be affecting you around the lawrence area. the wind is active now. gusts outside of the storm, 30 to 40 miles per hour. by 6:00 this morning, the focus is on the cape. by 8:00 this morning, it is offshore. we are going to quiet down in the next couple of hours. you can see the temperatures mild this morning. around 60 degrees right now. we hold in the 50' s all day long with temperatures falling close to the 50 degree mark by the end of the day. the wind is strong. a wind advisory in effect until this afternoon. this system clears out overnight with clearing skies. a lot of sunshine, but windy and cold are in the 30' s.
