it is a dry forecast for today. a big change is on the way. you see a little bit of rain out here near minneapolis. this system headed in our direction. we'll give you the timeline on what he can expect the showers and also when you can expect doug. doug: don't jell, thank you. starting this hour with breaking news from overnight. firefighters on the scene of a two-alarm fire in marblehead. flames shooting from the upper floors of the willow road home. a father woke up to the smoke detector going off. he was able to get his wife and two kids out of the house. no one was hurt. right now law enforcement around the nation mourning the loss of a fallen officer. she was killed in a shooting just south of washington, d.c. karen: the eyeopener's frank holland is tracking the new developments overnight. frank? frank: doug and karen, that officer was shot and killed while responding to a domestic-violence call. take a look at this. a heartbreaking sight. this is new video into our newsroom. officers standing vigil saluting the fallen officer. more than one hundred patrol

this morning, they were there to provide a somber escort for the body. the officer has been identified as ashley guindon of the prince william county police department. she was just been sworn in to the department on friday. she was shot and killed on her very first shift on saturday. a woman in the house was also killed. two other officers were injured in the shooting. >> i was at home. and i called the police because i heard pop, pop, pop. at first i thought it was just fireworks but then they said there was an officer in pursuit. frank: police say a suspect has been arrested. prosecutors have authorized a capital murder charge, along with other charges against the man. he has not been identified but police say he is in the military. he's expected to be arraigned tomorrow. karen: right now a pepperell teen is under arrest, accused of stabbing a 19-year-old man multiple times. it happened yesterday during a house party in dunstable. the victim was flown to beth

underwent emergency surgery. fox was arrested and is scheduled to be in court tomorrow. doug: right now, four men are under arrest in connection with breaking and entering in bedford. our juli mcdonald has more on the evidence that police say could tie these suspects to a series of crimes. >> he looked out his window and saw someone breaking in the window. juli: a bedford neighbor saved the day calling 911 as he witnesses a break-in on fletcher road. it all started just before noon friday. this black jeep pulled up with four men inside. >> the gentlemen got out, made an entry through the window, opened the front door. two other gentlemen got out of the car and entered the home. juli: fletcher road is practically across from the police station. officers responded within minutes. they arrested these four men from quincy in boston, but this case was far from over. inside the car police found a notebook that could link them to more than a dozen other crimes throughout new england-- >> there were addresses to several homes in different communities. when we started seeing those communities, they were connected.

with them but no weapons. they weren't able to steal anything this time. bedford police credit that neighbor and urge everyone if you see something, say something. >> you see your neighborhood a thousand times and the pictures stay a same. when you come some nights if there's something you don't recognize or a dog in your yard that you don't ever see, that's unusual. juli: three of the men made bail. the fourth is still being held here. they will all be arraigned at concord district court on monday. in bedford, juli mcdonald, wcvb, newscenter 5. karen: commitment 2016, and a crucial victory for hillary clinton in the south carolina democratic primary. overwhelming support from black voters key as she defeated bernie sanders by a wide margin. by nearly 50 points. clinton gaining delegates and momentum. bernie sanders insisting the nomination process is far from over. his own victory so far has been in new hampshire. but he says his campaign is just beginning. >> big win here in south

in manchester, new hampshire. there are two confirmed cases and three pending. all of them are players on the men's hockey team. symptoms of the virus include fever, severe headache, sore throat, and vomiting. while nearly all college students are vaccinated for mumps, the vaccine is only 88 percent effective so it's still possible to get sick. any future cases are expected to be mild, but doctors want to be proactive to protect those who are more vulnerable on campus. >> we do want to prevent this from spreading to other individuals who may not being totally immune, people who may not be able to get the vaccine. that includes pregnant women or people compromised which can result in more serious infection. saint a's students are now off campus for spring break. typically the mumps incubation is 25 days, so the school is in that window now which does help lower the risk factor. karen: thanks, frank. for anyone on spring break, danielle and doug are here right now with a look at the weather.

will get to you sooner and cool back the temperatures so here we go. 8:00 in the morning. vermont seeing a couple of showers. by 11:00 though it's in worcester county and metro west, i think. by 1:00 probably boston. by 2:00 or 3:00 exiting the cape and the islands. and then here comes the second cold front. this second cold front is going to bring in a little bit of cooler air but not cold by any means. and then we're watching this area of low pressure out to the west. you see this one here. this is going to gather some moisture from the gulf of mexico so as this gets to our area overnight tuesday into wednesday , it's going to bring a bit of heavy, steady rain. that will continue pretty much all day wednesday and may turn over at the tail end especially north and west of worcester i think through the berkshires into a little bit of snow. not looking for anything in terms of accumulation but in terms of rain totals from this one anywhere from about a half an inch to an inch does look likely from this system. and then on friday, this is the big thing.

because not every model is indicating this yet. it's still several days out. there is one of our models that we trust in the wintertime. it is showing the potential for a coastal storm to develop and strengthen and it will be cold enough to support all snow pretty much for our area. this could be accumulating snow starting friday afternoon into saturday morning, the best bet, of course, was the coastal storm would be southeastern mass. of course, as we're still seven days out we're going to continue to fine tune that forecast. in the meantime let's just settle in on those 50's. karen and doug. doug: a good idea. karen: we'll take it. 8:17. stories we're following right now. doug: three middle school girls in florida are now charged with trying to poison their teacher. police say one of the girls distracted the teacher while the other two put crushed red pepper in her soda. after taking a drink, the teacher began choking and experienced shortness of breath. police say the 12-year-olds were angry because one of them was disciplined by that teacher.

witnessed the frightening moments just before this plane crashed at the plymouth airport. they say the pilot was the only person on board this fixed-wing plane. he was practicing a training manuever called a "touch and go landing" when something went wrong. the plane crashing top down on on a grassy area just feet from the runway. the pilot was seriously injured. he was med-flighted to brigham and women's hospital. witnesses say he appeared to have some type of head trauma. >> the wing hit the ground and then he nose dived. he cartwheeled a few times and then landed right on his back. frank: investigators from the f.a.a. spent several hours digging through the wreck to try and figure out what caused the crash. the scene has been cleared. the plane is being held at a hanger at the plymouth airport. this morning the investigation is still ongoing. doug: another incident involving a small plane at a local airport. this one in chatham where a plane made a belly landing on the runway. the landing gear never deployed. the pilot and a passenger uninjured. karen: right now state police

on 495 in norton. investigators say the driver of a toyota tacoma lost control in the northbound lanes, crossed the median, and hit a toyota yaris head on. the driver of that yaris was killed; a passenger suffered life-threatening injuries. the tacoma driver, a 41-year-old man from mashpee, was taken to a rhode island hospital. their names have not yet been released. right now state police are asking for the public's help to find a blue pick-up truck connected to this deadly crash in somerset. that pick-up was carrying file cabinets in its bed friday morning. at least one of them fell off. the victim in this crash swerved to avoid a file cabinet and lost control of his s.u.v. he was pronounced dead at the scene. witnesses reported seeing a blue pick-up truck stop on the side of the road near exit 3 shortly after the accident. doug: right now police are searching for a missing man in waltham. 66-year-old leonard quirk was last seen leaving his home on moody street the night of

now, through the interior, we're talking low 50's to mid 50's. low to mid 50's along the south shore, too. the only exception is the cape and the islands may stay in the upper 40's today but it's a mix of sun and clouds becoming more sunny as we head through the afternoon. here is that next rain chance, i talked about for monday. it's a cold front, area of low pressure. so it kind of looks like this but 8:00 in the morning a couple of showers maybe out in western mass, southern vermont. but by 11:00 or 12:00, they've now entered metro west. boston is up next around lunchtime or so, 1:00. then southeastern mass may see a couple more through the early afternoon hours before we clear out. then we watch this second cold front. this will bring in cooler air and turn those winds to the north and west for tuesday. you're going to feel them because they'll pick up in intensity. then we watch this area of low pressure here to the south. this is going to be gaining some strength and a lot of moisture from the gulf of mexico so this

maker coming in overnight tuesday into wednesday. so let's time everything out for you. again you notice i say mostly rain because what happens is it's going to start off as rain as it goes right over us. then the second wave will develop along it, bringing in a more steady period of rain but also bringing down colder air which means i think north and west of boston or actually worcester, i think, is where you could see a brief period of some snow at the tail end of it. not looking for much. if anything at all in terms of accumulation. then on friday, we are watching the potential for some snow accumulation. this is from a coastal storm, of course, remember, this is five or six days out now. a lot can change. not every model is indicating this. one of the ones we do trust is showing the potential for a strengthening storm to come by our coastline and as it does it will be cold to support snow. looks like maybe friday afternoon into saturday. it could be accumulating snow, believe it or not, for some.
