harper tonight, jack? reporter: as you know there is going to be a funeral service at virginia tomorrow, and then here in west springfield. a special memorial service a week from today. >> we are looking at roughly from speaking with the chief about 5,000 officers coming up. reporter: west springfield native ashley glendon willy remembered here. at 28 the prince william county officer was killed in her first day on-the-job answering a domestic call. >> to see a young person go off and commit a life to public service and to be taken down on her very first day is simply beyond imaginable. reporter: at merrimack high she is remembered as someone who chose a life of service. her mother still lives in the new hampshire town. >> it was certainly a tragic thing to find out not only was this individual from our own close knit law enforcement family, but a member of the

made it more difficult to get our arms around that. reporter: her dad committed suicide one day after returning from a tour in iraq and now her mother prepares for another family funeral. >> you hear about it a lot lately, but when it is from someone in town and from relatives in town it hits closer to home. reporter: ashley's uncle is a police officer in west springfield. he actually worked today. he leaves tonight for a service tomorrow in virginia. obviously many of the family is already down there. the plans here from massachusetts are not finalized as to the exact times and all of that. but one of the plans is to put many of those officers from out of town up over at the expo center. they have a lot of space over there. i'm jack harper, wcvb newscenter 5. phil: new documents reveal what the marathon bombers were thinking in the moments before the deadly attack.

ed: it was done in the hospital room and he told agents they decided where to place the bombs not knowing which one was closer to the finish line. it was -- just before detonating the device joe -- johar tried to sin crone nice the bombs. the two brothers kept the entire things to themselves. he didn't warn any friends to stay away from the marathon or any spot on the street at all because he said he didn't care if they had gotten hurt. the documents were unsealed in tsarnaev's friend filipo who is appealing his eight-year sentence for lying to fed -- federal agents. jc: a man wanted for an attack on a revere police officer is under arrest. he surrendered to police this morning. julie mcdonald is live with this story. reporter: that's right. michael guthrow turned himself

attempted to attack a police officer with a syringe and then lead officers on a wild chase. at his arraignment we learned revere is not the only department who is after him. >> he does belong. reporter: michael guthrow covered his face. he turned himself in on a slew of charges and most recently on a traffic stop. a police officer reached into a car to keep him from driving away. >> they grabbed the syringe and made an attempt to stab the officer's hand that was in the vehicle holding a shoulder. reporter: police say guthrow lead them on a high speed chase into chelsea. >> he stopped his car and attempted to cause the officer to rear end him. reporter: the officer suffered a concussion and other injuries. guthrow got away from florida

the prosecutor said he is wanted in those states for drug charges . he claimed he is not a flight risk. >> did you claim he is not a flight risk? the out of state one or the in state one? >> the defendant is on the run for two weeks. >> the judge ordered he beheld without bail. reporter: the other person who was in the car when guthrow ran away on foot was arrested when the car crashed. he was wanted on a number of warrants. he is wanted for a pretrial hearing. julie mcdonald, wcvb, newscenter 5. >> thanks. let's take a live look at the city of boston. the temperatures are soaring into the 50s. this leap day is feeling like spring. it really does. harvey joins us now. harv, we are not done with the winter, but maybe we can enjoy this. harvey: now we know why they call it leap day. you feel like you have sleeping into spring.

he spoke with voters in minnesota before heading off to the bay state. he will hold a rally tonight at 7:30. phil: on the gop side, a violent scuffle to show you about during protests at a virginia. look at this. this video shows the confrontation between a secret service officer and a photographer for "time" magazine. the photographer says he was just trying to leave the media area to take pictures of the protest when a secret service agent actually choked him and slammed him to the ground. secret service is now investigating that. meantime, all of the republican candidates are now kris crossing the country with hundreds of delegates at stake. >> david duke endorsed me? okay. all right. i disavow. reporter: donald trump disavowed david duke's endorsement on friday. when asked on sunday if he condemns the white supremacist groups the front runner had no clear answer. >> i know nothing about david duke. i know nothing about white

>> you're watching newscenter 5 at 5:00. phil: justice clarence thomas breaking his long silence on the bench. asking a question for the first time in 10 years. the court is hearing a case opposing the federal law that bans people convicted of domestic violence from owning guns. thomas asked if the violation of any other law suspends a person's constitutional rights. his question drew audible gasps from people in the room. phil: president barack obama awarded the nation's highest military honor to a navy seal who helped rescue an american hostage in afghanistan. maria joins us with that story. reporter: it is remarkable.

sh edward byers, junior and the first living active duty member of the navy to receive the award in four decades. 36-year-old ohio native is a member of the navy's famed seal team 6. during the 2012 mission he used his own body as a shield to protect the hostage from the taliban gunfire while he fired back. it is not the first time byers has been put to the test. >> even if he never per -- performed the actions he is being recognized here today he would be known for his sacrifice and endurance. 11 overseas deployments, nine combat tours, recipient of the purple heart twice, bronze star with value -- valor five times. heather: impressive. the president said he is a quiet professional who would, quote, rather be elsewhere than right there at the white house. that speaks volumes about who he is.

gives americans the chance to honor a war hero who often serves in the shadows. a well deserved honor indeed. heather? heather:yes indeed. new backlash from the auto safety regulator. the national highway traffic safety administration says a sweeping recall will not provide significant safety benefits and could be a government over reach. 10 people have died from exploding air bags and nearly 150 others have been injured by them. so far 14 auto makers recalled 24 million u.s. vehicles. it is the largest automotive recall in u.s. history. heather:a frightening scene in myrtle beach. watch as that silver car on the right and the dump truck crashes right into it. the truck pushes it through the intersection and slooming it into another -- slamming it into another car. four people were taken to the hospital and all are expected to be okay.

53 degrees right now. if i didn't know better i would say spring's on the way and let's do it. but of course you being a native man -- harvey: know better than that. harvey: this will booy a week of change. temperatures will be all over the place. the second half of the week will be colder. check this out. record warmth in worcester and record tieing in boston. what a way to go out for the month of february. of course once every four years has been extra day. certainly we took advantage of it with mild temperatures. it is still in the 50s. 40s on off to the north and west. it cooled down a little bit. that will be the tendency. especially late tonight. if will be evening to 10:00 and mostly in the 40s. you get late tonight and tomorrow morning a secondary surge of colder air will come in just in time to drop the temperature to near or below freezing even in boston. it will start tomorrow. it will be a lot chillier.

temperatures will be around 40 degrees. it is not as mild as today's 64. i want to show you the temperatures tomorrow night. precipitation will be moving in around midnight. just before that the temperature may be flirting with 32 especially north and west. there could be a little sleet or a touch of freezing rain before the milder temperatures work in. then you wake up on wednesday morning and the temperatures are shooting up again. following that is when we will see colder weather move in here on wednesday night. from wednesday night through the weekend, it will be a lot colder . tomorrow of course super tuesday in massachusetts as well, to give you an idea of what the weather has been like boston and the metro area, 40 or low 40s in the afternoon. no precipitation. definitely a reasonable amount of sunshine. if you are talking about areas north of boston, dry

upper 20s to 30. moving to the low 40s. back to the 30s or so in the evening. worcester area may be a couple of degrees colder. it may top off under 40 degrees. and in areas south of boston it may edge to the mid to low 40s. it is a little milder there. we won't forget all of you on the cape. your high temperature will be around 39 or 40 degrees. no precipitation tomorrow. i did want to mention late tonight for those watching in the birkshires there could be a snow squall. then you have sunshine tomorrow and the clouds coming in at the end of the day. and notice by about 11:00 tomorrow night precipitation approaches and especially worcester north and west and it will be cold enough for a bit of freezing rain before the milder temperatures take over. and then all of us get some rain for the first half of wednesday and then we clear out on wednesday afternoon. that starts the windy and the colder period of time.
