hillary clinton got a delicate lead across the south. donald trump will be the front runner, but will he be in command? jon: he will certainly have a big night, but the question is how big of a night and whether ted cruz, marco rubio or john kasich again in can get enough delegates to take trump. george: what kind of sign that will send to the party. that is it for us. on abc news.com. we will have a prime time special at 10:00 eastern where we will break down what it means debates in a. that is world news tonight with david muir. s talk locally. massachusetts. still open. he just

georgia, sanders wins vermont, no shock. >> no surprises. bernie sanders winning in his home state of vermont, no surprise. ed: for bernie sanders, patrick, what do you think? patrick: it is a long slog to the convention. i think the issue -- after tonight, what is the tot ne? is it easier or less tense? and is in renting a pretty good. nominee pretty clearly. convention? patrick: i think he does. this month alone, very impressive. longer. massachusetts.

great numbers, especially on the republican side. janet: that is exactly it. 1.8 million people which is the high point for massachusetts. secretary of state bill gavin thinks we will get over that number today but most of it will be a lot of new voters and voters that are taking republican ballots, independence taking republican ballots. 500,000 people took republican ballots in 2008 and today could be as high as 700,000 people. on the republican side -- on the democratic side, a lot of people looking at the battle between bernie sanders and hillary clinton. nobody knows who will get massachusetts. hillary clinton was a couple of numbers ahead of the polls, but today i went to a couple of voting wards where there is big college populations. those numbers are skyrocketing much higher than 2008. ed: let' s talk about massachusetts.
7:04 pm
trump and sanders vote that has been driving this huge turnout. no question about it. i think it is a real dogfight between hillary clinton and bernie sanders. for all those people who took all those ballots, the big turnout will help trump. will it help sanders enough? we will find out. ed: who stays? does rubio say it, kasich or carson? patrick: these are proportionate delegates. i don' t know what the cause is going forward. does ted cruz win texas big? i' m sure it is hard for them to justify staying in for a lot longer. the same is true for sanders. as long as there is room at the convention and he can make his point, he will be there. ed: we shift now from proportionately delegates to a couple of weeks and out winner take all.

side, not democrats. sanders will continue to pick up delegates. republicans, if rubio does not win florida and trumped does, he is done. ed: you can still vote in massachusetts, make a difference. you can vote until 8:00 so go do it. patrick: do it as many times as possible. ed: that is only to chicago. abc news has a special that starts at 10:00 followed by us at 11:00. you can also follow the results on the free wcvb mobile app. maria: let' s go back to the breaking news. there has been a car crash right into a restaurant in newton. that go back to reid lamberty. tell us exactly what happened. obviously, we' re having a hard time hearing him, but what you

that is the sweet tomatoes restaurant in west newton on chestnut street. we have learned two people are dead. reid, do we have you now? can you hear us? ok, he cannot. ed, as we are looking at these pictures, this happened less than an hour ago. just a chaotic scene. of course, this is dinnertime where you see emergency response on the scene after this car goes crashing into this restaurant. ed: look how deep the car is in the restaurant. it is fully inside. if you are familiar with the washington street and watertown street split. the restaurant hugs the corner. if you go straight down from chestnut street, you have to make the left or the right. it appears this car could not. reason. i don' t want to speculate, you can see how far deep into the restaurant it is.

expect a number of people were having dinner tonight. maria: reid lamberty is on the scene. can you hear us? reid: i got you. a terrible scene right now. we are at the intersection of washington street and chestnut street in west newton. it is a sweet tomatoes restaurant where there is a small suv that has completely gone inside the restaurant. the restaurant space is not very large but there has been at least two fatalities as a result of this accident. multiple injuries. i spoke with a woman who witnessed the crash. her car actually got hit by the suv that went into the restaurant. the only thing she told me was the car was going 30 to 40 miles per hour and at no point did it appear to be breaking. if it did, the brakes did not work.
7:08 pm
medical condition with the driver but that is peers speculation at this point because she said he went directly into the restaurant after hitting her car and the car that was in front of her. he was traveling -- the driver was driving northbound on chestnut street. and at least made some attempt to make a left-hand turn and went straight into the restaurant. it is a messy scene. there is debris everywhere. the inside of the restaurant is ransacked. a woman reported hearing multiple screens as police and first responders got here. a number of people were already taken away on ambulance to local hospitals. again, as we reported, the confirmation of at least two fatalities. there were a number of people inside. ed: do you have any -- because of the hour, you would imagine they were a greater number of people.
7:09 pm
whether the capacity of the restaurant? reid: unfortunately, no. it was 10 after 6:00 so you can assume there were a handful of people. it is not a large restaurant. it is a pizza restaurant. the woman said they were employees working inside. it went into the area, the dining room area, where there were tables set up. you can see this car, the suv is completely inside the building. this is inside, like almost like it was a garage. tremendous damage. we don' t know who died, whether they were employees or people dining. we don' t know the condition of the driver. we witnessed several people put onto stretchers and put into ambulances. the only person we really have spoken to was a witness, the woman that was involved. there were a lot of people
7:10 pm
they heard the noise and commotion, but nobody really saw anything. there was a large presence, a number of rescue -- half a dozen ambulances, a couple ladder trucks, engine trucks, a couple dozen firefighters working in and around. as we are speaking right now, they are placing a red tarp over the opening of the restaurant. perhaps they are going to now try to remove the bodies that are inside or tend to the people inside right now. ed: reid lamberty is live in west newton for us at the scene of a breaking news. he will be there for the rest of the night. maria: we will check back in with him. moving on, we are hearing from the train operator responsible for the runaway redline train. incident is in and he' s being ed: new at 6:00, newscenter 5' john atwater is live in

s the reaction, john? john: investigators are blaming him for wrapping a cord around the throttle of the train. for the first time, the operator is responding. did you hear about this report yet that came out? it is blaming you. is there anything you want people to know? >> no, i' mm all set. john: it seems counterintuitive. >> a lot of things happened that day. john: david vasquez will say there is little about that day. he was forced to put his training to emergency bypass mode because of signal problems. to do that, he left the cabin, flip the switch underneath the front of the train but because he wrapped a microphone cord around the throttle, it took off the moment he hit the switch. you did see the report where the cord around the throttle --

john: and not engage the brake. >> i cannot talk about that. john: it went for more than five miles without an operator. and he lost his job the final report includes a statement after the episode. he said i was putting on my gloves with the mic cord on top of the dead man' s switch, i forgot and misplaced what i had done after talking to the dispatcher. he went on to say in the statement that it was operator error and he could not see the situation at hand because the lights were out inside the cab. live in braintree, john atwater, newscenter 5. maria: a quick look at your economy -- a jump in construction spending sending stocks sharply higher, giving the market its best day in over a month. the dow climbed 348 points to 16,865. the nasdaq rising 131 points. the s&p 500 gained 46. still ahead, more on our
