randy: good morning, it's thursday, july 28. i'm randy price. erika: i'm erika tarantal. emily is off. we're following breaking news on the eyeopener right now, new details on this fire in brookline. what we've learned overnight. randy: a serious crash in abington, a driver slamming into a woman. the dramatic scene and the injuries this morning. erika: a special appearance at the dnc. the key support from hillary clinton's former rival and the critical moment for her campaign tonight. randy: and the warm weather continues. cindy: it does. officially in boston, the heat wave is over. we didn't touch 90.

little bit with the westerly wind. mid-60's on the north shore, 58 to lower 70's on the cake. look at the wind direction out of the west and southwest. that is going to allow areas around boston to climb up into the lower 90's. the cold spots will be along the south coast. look at boston to worcester. 96 in lawrence. sunshine, was the sun comes up. another humid southwesterly wind. what i am watching is this area of moisture tomorrow. it looks like it will bring in seven needed rainfall across the area. we will time it out, coming up. let's get you out to the roads. olessa: good morning, everyone. a live look at the pike by allston brighton. that's eastbound heading to the top.

expressway by the south bay mall. south of town in good shape. more construction on the expressway, then again as you travel on 128 to routes 9. so far we are expecting trains and buses on schedule. erika: breaking details overnight in this raging fire in brookline. we've learned that nobody was hurt after flames tore through a home on winthrop road. you can see them shooting through the roof around 11:00 last night. firefighters were ableo them under control around midnight. no word on a cause. randy: commitment 2016, president obama and the woman he says should replace him sharing the stage. and this will be a big day for hillary clinton. like donald trump last week, this will likely be the biggest speech of her political career. erika: the eyeopener's antoinette antonio is leading our convention coverage.

case, but tonight, it all comes down to the candidate herself. hillary clinton will take the stage and make her pitch. last night, her former rival for the oval office told delegates this election is about embracing the future. >> that is what hillary clinton understands. this fighter, this states woman, this mother and patriot, that is the america she is fighting for. antoinette: before clinton joined him on stage, president obama painted his former secretary of state as a respected world leader. he said her name 26 times during his approximately 40 minute speech. the blistering attacks on her opponent were left to clinton's running mate, tim kaine.

a slick talking, empty promising, self-promoting one-man wrecking crew. antoinette: the trump campaign released a response last night, saying, quote, "their entire message could be summed up as, things are perfect, let's not change a single thing. so they resorted to the politics of fear, trying to convince americans not to vote for change." trump, meantime, is under fire from both sides over his calls for russian hackers to find missing emails from clinton's private server. erika? erika: vice president joe biden took aim at donald trump, saying he's too dangerous to be trusted with the presidency. biden gave a boost to clinton last night after he once thought about challenging her for the nomination. >> we all understand what it will mean for our daughters and granddaughters when hillary clinton walks into the oval office as president of the united states of america.

philadelphia as the democratic national convention continues tonight. ed harding reports from the dnc. ed will be with us on eyeopener in the morning with a wrap up. and look for special abc news coverage from the convention tonight, right here on channel 5 beginning at 10:00, followed by newscenter 5 at 11:00. randy: police are searching for this teenager wanted in connection with a murder in fall river. police believe 15-year-old jayden smith was one of two people who shot and killed a jerrod cohen was shot at his home on plain street. earlier this month, police arrested 16-year-old joel lopez on murder charges. erika: a driver is under arrest charged with operating under the influence before hitting a person in abington. police tell us duane seaquist struck that person on green street, before rolling over at the intersection of brockton ave. and mill street. both the driver and the victim have serious injuries. randy: one person is dead after

firefighters in the merrimack river. firefighters tell newscenter5 they pulled three people from the water after the trio jumped in from a bridge. the call came in around 8:00 last night. it's unclear why they jumped in the river which has an extremely powerful current. erika: right now, changes ordered by boston city hall after the death of this little boy at a city beach. the boy's body was found after he wandered away from his summer camp. the eye's todd kazakiewich is live at the community center where the director is now on leave. todd: the city is now reviewing its protocol for all 36 community centers as we learn about new questions surrounding the boy's death. the center is closed a memorial left at the door for 7-year-old kyzr willis. the boy wandered away tuesday afternoon his body pulled from the water on carson beach hours later. mayor marty walsh visited the grieving family yesterday. they say the boy's brother heard kyzr scream in the changing room. but police have few answers.

>> we had a lot of kids telling us different things -- it's hard to sort of what happened but we tried our hardest. todd: the city says there's no security video in that area. relatives now want to know how camp staff responded when they discovered kyzr was missing. we'll keep you posted on the investigation. live in south boston, todd kazakiewich, wcvb newscenter 5. randy: a gunman will undergo a psychiatric evaluation after barricading himself from police on cape cod. rifle, fired a shot that forced police to shut down a strip mall on route 28 in mashpee. police say the 41-year-old east falmouth man was inside an electronics store. they claim he threatened officers and himself. >> at one point in the late afternoon, the suspect fired around from inside the business. the situation escalated when it

and over a thousand rounds of ammunition. randy: police negotiators convinced the suspect to surrender peacefully. no one was hurt. charges are still pending in the case. erika: a bill advances to make duck boat tours safer in boston after a deadly crash in april. allison warmuth was killed after she was hit by a duck boat while riding her moped. the state senate has now advanced legislation pushed by warmuth's parents to mandate two staff members on each tour. the bill adds new penalties for violations of safety requirements, including having blind-spot cameras and proxi boston duck tours has already started making changes. a new proposal to upgrade the ez pass. randy: how it could make more than just driving a little easier. a new alert in the u.s. about the zika virus. the appeal from the cdc for all pregnant women. erika: a medical breakthrough in boston from doctors who normally help people. the treatment for this pup that

erika: a medical breakthrough at brigham and women's hospital to save a dog. doctors used a special new type of medical glue on their very first patient. little papi had a mouth disease that caused a painful opening to form. three surgeries failed to fix it. his doctor at the mspca called brigham and women's for help. doctors there developed a glue to fill the hole.

caused tremendous damage to dozens of homes. despite that, the city did not qualify for federal disaster aid. cindy: four minutes, two miles, all that destruction. i think we all remember that. we will be quiet today, but it willet officially the heat wave is over -- you can see the high estimate at 87 degrees stop it stands at six ways in terms of the heatwave, the 10th longest stretch on record in boston. we start over with the 90 degree temperature here. 72 and worcester and as you go to the north we have mid 60's in

and we are seeing the humidity pickup up with dewpoint temperatures running in the low-to-mid 60's, and the wind will turn more south southwest and you can kind of see how busy it is from new york city southward. you'll notice humidity increased as we see the temperatures,, , ane building cloud cover. nashua, worcester around 90 and there is a south-southwesterly winds that will keep us down. we see some building clouds this afternoon and there might be one or two isolated showers that developed north of route 2 through the evening but that is about the extent of it. we are waiting for some moisture

leading edge of cooler air but there is moisture down to the south and this will work in, interacting with the frontal boundary. we desperately need some rainfall for the entire month of july. we are behind by nearly a couple inches for the month and the deficit now is up over five inches. i think tonight the clouds increase and there might be one or two showers with temperatures holding close to 70. getting out of the 70's, so it is a much cooler day as the wind turns the north and east. it will feel summary here, but it fills in during the morning hours into the day and read through the afternoon. there are indications that there could be embedded downpours that could lead to some localized

and a steady increase in users. reduction of the world's most recognizable jetliner could come to an end. boeing says it could stop production of its 747 jets after nearly half a century of building them. boeing has delivered more than 1500 of the planes since 1970, when the style was introduced. the company says production could end if there is not more sufficient demand for the planes in the future.ra is recommending all pregnant women in the u.s. get screened for the zika virus. that's whether or not they've traveled to zika hotbeds. the cdc is also recommending a more sophisticated blood test. zika is widespread in parts of south america and the caribbean and has been linked to a birth defect. there are now 450 pregnant women with zika in the united states.

the library will be built in a park on the city's south side along lake michigan. it is also near the university of chicago, where the president once taught constitutional law. president obama is expected to announce the selection next week. randy: no winner for the powerball jackpot. last night's drawing failed to produce a lucky ticket. that means the jackpot is now up to $478 million, the eighth largest prize in u.s. history. the next drawing will be saturday night at 11:00. erika: check this out -- that's a 200 pound shark reeled in by a 13-year-old boy in new jersey. his father initially thought the boy caught a stingray but quickly realized it was a much bigger fish. after the family snapped some photos, they helped the shark back into the ocean.

randy: following breaking news in your early news to go. erika: we're learning new details about a raging fire in brookline. this is new video into our newsroom overnight. you can see flames shooting out of the roof of this home on winthrop road around eleven. firefighters were able to get them under control around midnight. no one was hurt. it's not clear yet how the fire started. randy: police are looking for this teenager wanted in connection with a murder in fall river.

people who shot and killed a 29-year-old man on july 11. jerrod cohen was shot at his home on plain street. earlier this month, police arrested 16-year-old joel lopez on murder charges. erika: lawyers for the teenager convicted of murdering his danvers high school teacher are trying to prevent a second case from going to trial. 17-year-old philip chism was convicted in the 2013 murder of colleen ritzer. while awaiting that trial at a detention center in 2014, chism allegedly attacked a female employee in the bathroom. lawyers are meeting privately next month with prosecutors and a judge, to come up with an agreement before a trial. randy: the man who tried to murder president ronald reagan 35 years ago is about to be set free. john hinckley spent the past 3 decades confined to a mental hospital after being found not guilty by reason of insanity. a judge has now ordered hinckley released, saying the 61-year-old no longer shows signs of mental illness.

pamela smart, the former new hampshire school teacher serving a life sentence for plotting her husband's murder, is now suing her jailers. smart says she was wrongly put into solitary confinement. her lawsuit against new york state also says prison wardens called her names, including jason and buffy the vampire slayer. she says she was allowed only 3 showers per week. erika: new details in a in the small plane crash two weeks ago. it went down in the woods as it was trying to land at norwood airport. the pilot was also seriously hurt. randy: car thieves once again target a dealership in cleveland, ohio stealing several cars from the lot. and this isn't the first time. surveillance shows eight or nine people breaking into the dealership, and stealing keys then cars. they've hit this one spot five times in recent weeks, and at

police say the thieves know what they're doing. erika: baltimore prosecutors dismiss all charges against the last three police officers accused in the death of freddie gray. gray died in april, 2015 after he suffered a spinal injury while in police custody. four other officers were already cleared. there is a report pending from the federal justice department, which is investigating alleged abuse by baltimore police in other cases. a police union protest is planned tonight over this banner flying at me the mayor says it will stay saying it's possible to support minorities and police at the same time adding city hall features a banner supporting slain police officers in louisiana and texas. the police union says the message from the black lives matter banner is disrespectful. randy: that dirty water may not be so bad anymore. the epa, in a new report, gave the charles river a b-plus for water quality for the past year,
