the high made it to 87. we had the sea breeze kick in. six days in a row the heatwave, and it is over but today we'll see the temperatures jump up again. 75 right now in the city. we're 69 out in worcester. a couple of 50s showing up. otherwise lots of mid 60s on the north shore and south shore, low 70s in the cape but you probably already are feeling the humidity coming up a bit. look to the south and see how the dewpoints are 70 or higher through the carolinas. that's where the air is coming from with a south, southwesterly it is that wind that's going to keep the sea breeze away in boston. and notice the brightest side through lunchtime. we do see building clouds here in the afternoon. our high 92, 93. 96 in lawrence, nashua 95. cooler today, south coast and cape islands with the wind off the water in the lower 80s for you. most of today, sun, building clouds, but as we get towards this evening, notice right here near the new hampshire border, the clouds and maybe one or two spot showers, and it's

boundary dropping down from the north. this front is the leading edge of the cooler air, this is going to drop in our area overnight. clouds will increase, and then we're going to watch this moisture to the south interact with that front tomorrow and that is going to sell widespread rainfall for us and some embedded downpours. you can see we have had a half an inch of rain in the month of july, and for the year, our deficit is about 6.5 inches, so we desperately need the rainfall. tonight our low temperatures fall back to around 70 degrees, and notice how the cloud f in, by 5:00 tomorrow, showers moving up from the south, and that rain fills in here during the morning hours, during afternoon, we are going to see the downpours but they may focus across southeastern massachusetts. if that happens, this is where we could have the bull's eye for the rain. upwards of an inch. we are talking about widespread rain here for most of us. with the clouds and the rain in the, and the northeasterly wind, look at the high just 78 degrees.

opportunity to take control of their liquor licensing. if the governor and legislature truly want to reform the state's laws, many dating back to well before prohibition, why exclude boston. the governor staff by way of explanation points out the city was already granted licenses last year. that is, of course, a short-term perspective. the question is not over how many licenses will be awarded, but who has the right to determine the amount and approval of the liquor licenses. and ultimately, oversight o licensees. if mayor walsh has his way, it would be to diverse neighborhoods rather than focusing on downtown. they are looking for the long-term fix. if successful, creation of these new wealth-building opportunities for the fortunate neighborhood owners and jobs for local residents goes hand in hand with the city's development of boston's main street districts. it's time for boston to have the autonomy that other cities have,

heading to the top of the screen. let's get to the maps and check your trip. south side of town we've been watching this car fire on 95 northbound. as you travel through that stretch from 295 up to route 152, anticipate some residual delays, once you get past it, you are doing ok. some volume building approaching 128 and also 124. and route 3 looks good, and the expressway, now about 30, braintree into boston. and the pike, your ride 40 minutes, 495 heading out to 128, and 93 south, so far, it looks methuen. that volume picks up, stop and go down to the spot pond. trains and buses doing ok. >> and now to the breaking news on the north shore in lynn. >> witnesses describing a frightening morning. shots ring out, right to the eyeopener, sera congi is on the scene. >> a very busy morning on the street. take a look behind me, police have cordoned off this section as they gather evidence and investigate what happened here. information is limited because

investigation, but here is what we know. lynn police tell us that at least one person was shot in the head. that victim a man in his 20s was taken to mass general with serious injuries. there are no suspects at this point. no arrests. the shooting took place at 3:45 this morning. neighbors that we have talked with were awakened by the sound of gunshots, some saying up to 10 to 11 gunshots sounding like fireworks. but here investigates have been they have been going door-to-door talking to witnesses, and they have left several evidence markers and also collected some of that evidence. we're hoping to get an update. live in lynn, sera congi, wcvb. >> breaking details overnight in this raging fire in brookline. we learned no one was hurt after flames tore through a building on winthrop road. you can see them shooting through the roof. this is around 11:00 last night. no word on the cause at this hour. >> and one person is dead after

merrimack river. we're told that three people jumped from a bridge into the river. all of them were pulled out by the firefighters. one of them died. >> and right now a suspect is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation after a day long standoff with police in mashpee. officers say at one point the 41-year-old fired a shot from an assault rifle forcing police to shut down a strip mall on route 28. no one was hurt. >> the driver is under arrest, charged with operating under the influence before hitting a rs seaquist struck the person on green street before rolling over here at the intersection of brockton avenue and mill street. both the driver and the victim have serious injuries. and tonight somerville's police union is planning a rally at city hall. they are protesting mayor's office refusal to remove this black lives matter banner hanging on the city hall building. the mayor says that it's possible to support the minority

threatened officers and himself. he eventually surrendered and no one was hurt. >> baltimore prosecutors dismiss all charges against the last three police officers accused in the death of freddie gray. gray died april of 2015 after his spine was severed. four other officers were cleared. there is a report pending from the federal justice department investigating alleged abuse by baltimore police in other cases. >> police are looking for this teenager wanted in connection with a murder in fall police believe 15-year-old jayden smith was one of two people who shot and killed a 29-year-old man on july 11. jerrod cohen was shot at his home on main street. earlier this month police arrested 16-year-old joel lopez on a murder charge. the man who tried to murder president ronald reagan 35 years ago is about to be set free. john hinckley spent the past three decades confined to a mental hospital. after being found not guilty by

a judge has now ordered hinckley released saying that the 61-year-old no longer shows signs of mental illness. he must still undergo therapy and is barred from talking to the media. >> a new threat in the fight against opioid abuse, officials say a drug used to sedate elephants is suspected in several overdoses in several states. authorities say that they found carfentanil mixed with or passed off as weaker heroin. it is said to be 100 times as potent as targeting a dealership. this is cleveland, ohio. they are stealing several cars from this dealership, and this is not the first time that they have done this. surveillance shows eight or nine people here breaking into the dealership. stealing keys. then cars. they have hit this one spot five times and a dozen other dealerships in this area. police say that the thieves know exactly what they are doing.

what are you doing? >> this frightening ride for a couple in alaska and their two-year-old child. they were rammed three times by another driver who kept following them. the couple started recording and called 9-1-1 and they pulled away. the car sped off hitting several other cars along the way, and that driver is still on the loose. and lots of speculation about a mysterious streak across the sky out west. some say the light in utah and nevada was a meteor, and an astronomer from the harvard smithsonian center for astrophysics in cambridge tells the "l.a. time" that streak is the reentry of a chinese rocket that launched last month. the u.s. military is expected to release more information on the streak of light a little later today. >> it's 6:53. and new information. pope francis taking a fall in poland. the pope stumbled on his way to the alter. people were rushed to his side.
