17, 21, 23, 32 and the powerball 5. no word yet on who has this lucky ticket. it's so exciting, though, to have it right in our backyard. good morning, everyone. i'm sera congi, filling in for doug. antoinette: i'm antoinette antonio. let's check in with mike wankum, who didn't win the powerball. maybe we're getting a prize in the form of rain. mike: it's been a while since we've shown radar with ath friday was supposed to be a big rain event. it fizzled out. this morning, we're getting a rain shower. not a lot, but there's some. to the north, there's scattered showers. most is really light stuff. as you travel to the west, it gets intense beyond greenfield, especially. through the berkshires, there's nice downpours going on right now. as you travel south of the line, we're seeing less intensity going on. working eastward as we head through the morning hours.

right now, arson being blamed for this raging fire in swampscott. the suspect is due in court tomorrow. sera: the home was heavily damaged. the eyeopener's juli mcdonald explains what made this fire so suspicious. >> i was taking a nap and heard a huge explosion. reporter: neighbors thought it was a gas explosion that rocked 11 linden ave saturday evening. flames shot out the windows. smoke could be seen for miles. at least five neighboring fire departments >> i saw the garage doors buckled outward, like there was a fire or explosion. i saw flames inside. i saw smoke out the back of the building. reporter: because of how quickly the flames tore through the house, firefighters became suspicious. when the fire was finally put out, the arson investigation began. police arrested the homeowner, 57-year-old timothy brosnan. >> it was a bright day, a lot of people out and around. by the time they came out to see what the commotion was, the fire was heavily involved in

reporter: thankfully, no one was hurt. as word spread of the arson charge, neighbors shook their heads for the real victims. timothy brosnan's family. >> the fire happened at a home where young teenagers were living. nobody was home, but there's all their memories, the stuff that makes your life when you're a kid. that, to me, is the saddest part. reporter: one firefighter was treated for heat exhst we're told he's expected to be okay. swampscott police told newscenter 5 brosnan will be arraigned on monday. antoinette: a new clue in the investigation into who sexually assaulted an elderly hingham woman inside her home. this is a composite sketch of the attacker. investigators think he's about 65 years old with gray hair and brown eyes. police say he attacked the elderly victim and took off without stealing anything.

texas. at least 16 people are dead after a hot air balloon crashed, making it the deadliest such crash ever in the united states. the eyeopener's dianne cho is tracking the mishap that started the disaster. >> i heard like a whooshing sound, and then a big ball of fire up. reporter: witnesses looked on in horror after learning a hot air balloon crashed, carrying at least 16 people on board. >> loud, like a gunfire explosion. all you could tell, it was a fire, a big ball of flames. reporter: officials confirm everyone on board is dead. the hot air balloon crashed into high volt a little power lines and caught fire in a field. about 30 miles south of us a au texas. authorities believe the fire broke out in the basket. investigators with federal aviation administration and national transportation safety board are trying to piece together what went wrong in the

>> to the families that may be watching this, we offer our thoughts and prayers for the loss. this will be a difficult site for us to work through. reporter: it was run by heart of texas hot air balloon rides. officials have not released the victims' names at this time. the ntsb will spend the next several days interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence at the scene. antoinette: a man has drowned while paddle boarding on everett lake in weare, new hampshire. park. a woman has been rushed to the hospital. investigators say she went under and the man went after her and drowned. the woman was pulled from the water by a nashua dive team. the two were not wearing life jackets. sera: new video of a rescue by state police. these are infrared images and were taken from the air wing helicopter as crews found two lost hikers on wednesday.

cell phones also helped state police find the hikers. antoinette: the state medical examiner now says meningitis caused the death of a toddler in worcester, according to a report in the telegram. gigi brown was found dead in her crib last fall. her family said dcf expressed concern about the safety of the apartment where she lived with her mother on wellington street. police were killed to the the same apartment months after gigi's death for reports of a lethargic 15-month-old boy. the red cross is putting out a request for blood donations this morning. they only have a five-day supply for hospitals and blufd banks. they need all types of blood this morning and are offering donors five dollar amazon gift cards as a thank you. there will be blood drives all throughout for anyone who can help. sera: great news from new england revolution player charlie davies, who said he fought and beat cancer. we caught up with him last month when his preemie twin boys went home from the hospital. yesterday, the team put out a

he received treatment and is in remission. davies tweeted, cancer is something i never expected. having beaten it, i'm stronger for it. pumped to be back with the squad. antoinette: a lot of love to the davies family. everyone on the mend, back and healthy. love it. sera: dozens of postal employees are recovering after getting sick on the job in triggered the illnesses and set off an emergency response. sera: we are hearing from the massachusetts national guard heroes credited with rescuing a woman stranded in her car for days. their actions saving her life. mike: rain finally falling in parts of the area. how long until it clears out and

soldiers training at a base in new jersey this week when two of them decided to turn down a back road. >> how often is this the kind of road somebody travels down? >> civilians, personally i've never seen a civilian out there. reporter: that's why they were surprised, when they came across this, a cadillac stuck in the mud with all four doors wide open. >> at first it was extremely suspicious.re two soldiers honked, called outs and then slowly moved in. >> i got close enough to see there was one elderly person in the back seat. >> 87-year-old jeanette haskins and her cat had taken a wrong turn two days earlier. with temperatures near 100 degrees, her cell phone dead, and only rain water to drink, haskins had become dehydrated, started to hallucinate and was barely breathing. >> i'm like what do you mean there's a civilian not breathing? reporter: francis and coppola

the first thing the guardsmen did when they got back to the woman's car was hand her a bottle of water and turn on the air conditioning. >> she told us she yelled and screamed to get attention. since no one was around, she fell out of luck and gave up. she was waiting to die. >> i came to and there were these men's faces. it was the best thing that ever happened. we have so much to be grateful to them for. i'm convinced if they hadn't found me, i wouldn't be here today. reporter: haskins cat ran off during the ordeal, but she's okay. the guardsmen feel proud and lucky they turned down that road and found her just in time. >> makes me help we saved a life. reporter: guard commanders are trying to figure out how to reward the soldiers, but a medal for each seems likely.

antoinette: mike, are we finally going to get this rain? mike: we are. we need three days of nice, soaking rain. this is not it. antoinette: preferably during everyone's week. mike: tuesday, wednesday, thursday with a minimum amount of wind. this is not much, but at least it's something. we were talking about how it was hit or miss. that's what we'll be seeing all day today. we need the rain. if you together, it's going down as the third driest june and july on record in boston's history. we're supposed to get about three and a half inches of rain. we didn't get an inch of rain in boston. for the year, we're running six and a half inches on the dry side. this is a welcome sight. i know it's light stuff, but every little drop helps this time of year. got a couple of areas i'm keeping an eye on. we've had a couple of bands of showers move through essex county. around the danvers area, we're

today, tonight, tomorrow and maybe even into early tuesday. it's not a lot of rain. but every once in a while, one or two of you may get nice downpours out of it. the skies will be gray the next couple days. we'll eventually get to sunshine. right now, 72 degrees. winds coming to the east. once they do that temperature is not going to go anywhere. a breeze out of the ocean. check out the dew point at 71 degrees. thankfully, we're not loo temperatures into the 90s. humidity will remain high. it will start to drop off tuesday. wednesday, that will be a comfortable day. sun will be back out. humidity down. it will be great. then we start to ramp it back up again towards thursday. humidity comes back in. morning showers this morning. then showers this afternoon, primarily focused to the west. 74 to 78 degrees. then tonight, more scattered showers, muggy night coming our way. 64 to 68 degrees.

this is video just into our newsroom. three other women were also hurt. shots were fired in a separate incident, but police do not think anyone was hit. they do however, think someone was assaulted. police are still searching for suspects. sera: 2,000 homes are in danger of being destroyed by a wildfire in california. the flames raging near the big sur coast have already killed a bulldozer operator working on the fire line. the fire has been burning for a firefighters expect it to keep burning until the end of august. antoinette: the red sox have a chance to redeem themselves this afternoon after a loss to the angels. it was a promising start. check out the leadoff homer from mookie betts in the first. but drew pomeranz would give up five runs, including the two-run home in the bottom of the third. sox lose 5-2. sera: the patriots will be back on the field this morning.

mike: gray morning out there this morning. we've had light rain. some have had predawn. some getting nice showers right now. let me show you what's happening right there. to the north, a band of showers vi travel off to the south and not so much going on. but there's more. you see out towards milford, trying to work its way eastward. you see showers there. off to the west, that's where most of it is focused right now. it's also moving to the east. that's why we've got more showers in the forecast for today. most of it will be this morning. this afternoon, much more widespread. as we head towards monday, same thing. tuesday morning, a few showers and then the sun comes back. temperatures warm up.

the victim, from georgia, was attending a summer program at harvard university. the eyeopener's nicole estephan is following the investigation into this tragedy. reporter: from the early morning into the night, friends came and embraced, left in tears. candles and flowers marking the spot where 18-year-old tyler green's life came to an end friday night. >> it's horrific, tragic. i looked it up to see if it was real. reporter: green was attending a seven-week summer program at harvard. he joined friends on weeks bridge just before 9:00 p.m. to jump into the charles. he never surfaced. >> it's unnerving because it's such a close knit community. there's only a handful of kids. reporter: green recently graduated from high school in georgia, an hour from atlanta. his family told of his drowning from afar. >> knowing that their child died so many miles away. it's heartbreaking. reporter: the harvard summer school program released this

large stingray was found off the coast of massachusetts. experts say the warm summer water draws the rays to the shore where they bury themselves in the sand under ankle deep water. >> it was excruciating. i actually thought i stepped on a piece of of glass or something. sera: one way to avoid the stingrays, shuffle your feet as you walk into the water to scare them off. antoinette: parts of the baltimore area cleaning up from heavy rain last night. in ellicott city, maryland, a state of emergency is now in place after major flooding destroyed much of the historic main street area. there was extensive damage to nearby buildings and cars. some people were even trapped in partially submerged cars. people trapped in the floods say of. >> there was glass broken out. cars on top of other cars. it's amazing what damage can be done in such a short period of time. antoinette: people trapped pie the flooding say the water was waist deep in some areas. sera: let's talk about the

i've got rain on radar. antoinette: is that the rain we were seeing in baltimore coming up? mike: it's a separate system, but it's east coastish so we get a little bit coming through. some of that is coming through. we're finishing up the month of july. it's finishing up the month of july, seeing how hot it was. temperatures averaging about three degrees above average. we're above the 0e9 degree mark so far, for the year, we're up to 13 days before 90 degrees. last year, we had 14, which is the average pie the way. back in 2014, we had eight. it was a nice summer. go back to 2010, we had 25. remember, we've got the whole month of august. we're in a warm trend right now. we're pushing that number up quite a bit. maybe we'll get to the 20-day mark as we get later in august. here's what's going on. the radar is showing us rain. we're seeing a couple of areas of rain.

essex county and still continues to do so. had a downpour right here. the nature of these build up, fall apart. when they fall apart, they drop nice rains. off cost of gloucester, we're seeing a nice cell. this will continue to track its way offshore. this is where the rain has been jaha heavy out here. we're seeing reports of an inch of rain you see through yellow right here. we'll k here's the radar estimate of how much rain has fallen. this is where we're seeing most of it. once in a while, you get a pocket where it may be more than an inch. this is based on radar returns. it's not anybody on the ground with a rain gauge. it shows you nice rain going on to the west. it's trying to push its way eastward. the map at 10:00 this morning, what we're looking at right now, scattered showers. it will wind itself down toward lunch time.

no threat of rain. however, the threat will go down in the afternoon. at 2:00, not much going on. we may see scattered showers popping up to the west. there are indications that say once we get past 4:00, 5:00 this afternoon, could get some of these to redevelop to the west and get more substantial rains out of it. we could use all the rain, running so dry. in boston's case, over six inches dry so far for the year. 72 degrees, wind coming to the that will keep the temperature on the humid size. the air is ready to squeeze out moisture. the high temperatures today, close to the current temperatures, they'll not move much with the easterly wind, the gray skies and showers falling. tomorrow is going to be a lot like today. probably less of a threat of rain, but on the cool side. tuesday, we have a chance of seeing showers early in the day. the thing about tuesday is once the skies start to clear away, the humidity starts to cool

help other children dealing with injuries just like he had. 9-year-old justin demars is a man of few words. but boy, does he have a big heart, donating his birthday money to shriners children's hospital in boston every year for his past five birthdays. >> he was probably four or five, the first time we came down and he said he wanted to bring toys down to make the kids feel better. reporter: he says especially kids who burned their hands, kids like himself. when he was just 10 months old, justin suffered second and third degree burns. >> he pulled himself up to our steam radiators and held on with both hands. reporter: the clermont, new hampshire family was at shriners for five days while justin was being treated. despite the burns, he was all smiles, a testament to the medical staff. everything shriners does is thanks to generous donations. you don't have to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars

swampscott man is accused of burning down his own home. timothy brosnan is expected to be arraigned on arson charges. investigators believe he set the fire on linden avenue. it was suspicious because it spread so quickly. one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. antoinette: hingham police are looking for the man in this composite sketch. they say a man who looked like this broke into an elderly woman's home and assaulted investigators think he's 65 years old with gray hair and brown eyes. sera: 16 people are dead after a hot air balloon caught fire and crashed in texas. it happened saturday morning near lockhart about 30 miles south of austin. officials say this is the deadliest hot air balloon crash in u.s. history. there are growing concerns about the zika virus in the u.s. after health officials say mosquitos in florida likely infected four people. workers there are now going door

and just like the jingle from the tv show "cheers," sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name. highlighting an age-old turf battle between city hall and boston area legislators, beacon hill is scheduled to consider a municipal reform bill that would provide all cities and towns in massachusetts, with the notable exception of boston, the opportunity to take control of their liquor licensing. if the governor and legislature truly want to reform the state's liquor laws -- many dating back to well before prohibition -- why exclude boston? the governor's staff, by way of explanation, points out that the city was already granted licenses last year. that is, of course, a short term perspective. the question is not over how many licenses will be awarded, but who has the right to determine the amount and approval of liquor licenses and ultimately oversight over licensees. if mayor walsh and city councilor ayanna pressley have their way, additional permits would be granted to boston's diverse neighborhoods, rather
