the mysterious explosion. the family in side when it happened. >> how a worker ended up getting stuck in a twisted cement mixer. maria: 5 investigates. saying words from boston's police union. why they say the city is putting lives at risk. meteorologist: a line of thunderstorms over the midwest. we track this way for the weekend. we'll have the timeline. ed: inside the local lab identifying zika. maria: the money battle that is delaying the breakthrough. ed: ht worker is battling painful injuries after tricky res rs are cue. i am ed harding. maria: i am maria. battling painful injuries after a tricky rescue in newton. maria: and i'm maria stephanos. that worker was trapped in a piece of equipment for hours. newscenter 5's john atwater is live in newton with how they got him out. john? john: maria, a difficult rescue at this apartment building that is under construction. we know the worker has number of broken bones. we have learned his injuries are so severe, he is in danger of losing his foot.

construction worker out of the building and into a waiting ambulance. >> this was a true tech rescue operation. john: his foot was caught in this cement mixer. this picture shows the sides cut away. in the middle there, the heavy metal auger that sucked his foot in when he slipped. >> and it's wedged under the bottom of the hopper, they had to get cement out, and then cut away the body of it, and cut auger off. john: tha was in unbelievable pain, given oxygen and an i.v. as firefighters carefully cut the mixer apart by hand for two agonizing hours. >> they could not use power tools because the operation was so delicate. we couldn't use a torch. the ankle was wrapped around the auger, and the heat from torch would burn victim. john: investigators say it appears the worker slipped into the mixer, but it was one of the strangest technical rescues they've come across. >> we were surprised how he could have gotten in there.

cement stacked four feet high. john: talking when he was taken to the hospital. investigators are now trying to determine if anything could have prevented such a dangerous accident. osha has been notified of this accident. no update on the work's continue. live in newton tonight, john atwater, wcvb newscenter 5. ben: right now, this connecticut home is a pile of rubble. now officials are trying to figure out why it exploded this afternoon with seven people inside, including a child. damage from a neighbor's drone tonight. bins here? ben? ben: we learned that four of the patients are younger than 16 years old. so far tonight, one of them has been releaseed from the hospital. drone video shows emergency workers trying to rescue people from this suburban hartford home. >> 41 responding, multiple calls for a house explosion. ben: the home in pieces,

>> no reports of fire. the neighbors are reporting they believe occupants were on the second floor. ben: the explosion shattering the summer stillness just after four o'clock thursday afternoon. authorities say seven people including this woman taken to the hospital. >> rescue crews pulled at least one injured child from the home he's also been brought to a local hospital. ben: similar explosions, like this one, have been caused by natural gas. utility crews shut down service in the neighborhood as a precaution. somewhat amazingly, nobody was killed, and everybody is expected to recover. in the newscenter, wcvb newscenter 5. maria: new tonight, boston police moving ahead with plans to put body cameras on some officers. department leaders, along with the city council, held a public hearing in mattapan this evening to talk about the pilot program that's been proposed. some want to know what's taking so long to get that six-month

evans hoped to have 100 cameras on the streets by july, but he says that is unrealistic. evans' new target date is september 1st, but says the department is still trying to recruit volunteers to test the cameras. delivering a strong message to the mayor and police commissioner tonight. 5 investigates mike beaudet, obtaining a scathing letter where the unions claim the city is putting officers at risk. >> strong words from king leadership tonight. in a three-page letter, the unions write, over the last 18 months, we have begged you to take the actions necessary to supply the department and our membership with the necessary

equipment necessary to protect the citizens of our city and our police officers alike. it goes on to say, you can sing "kumbaya" until the cows come home, but won't stop a rifle round aimed at police officer's chest. >> i will will read it and see what is going on. >> mayor walsh reacting. >> they say enough is enough and you are putting officer's lives at risk. >> simply not true. >> two of the points they made, they say there are not enough officers. they say their equipment is not good enough. >> well, we're upgrading the equipment. i don't know what the right number is. i know there is a number, a federal mandate. that is argument that the police have in a long time. >> commissioner evans also weighing outside of the public hearing on this police use of body cams. >> it is what it is. we'll work with them and do what we can. >> it seems inflammatory. >> yeah. i mean, the unions, unfortunately, sometimes they can get there. i think the words we should use

do you take offense to it? >> no, i don't. >> again, a hard time to be a police officer now. >> in the letter, the unions also go after the president and the governor. >> we live in a world where the sitting president has basically fanned the flames of police hatred with political rhetoric, now a sitting governor is politically afraid to speak. >> i wouldn't say it. the governor is not speaking out. i just think it is very difficult times we have to work together. >> unions on contract negotiations with the city, the unions insists, this is not about new contracts, it is about safety. we reached out to unions but never heard back. in mattapan, mike, 5 investigates it's warm and clear out there right now. we'll be feeling the heat tomorrow! maria: and storms. meteorologist: that is what we are watching.

we were talking about how much real estate it had to go through. it is not going to get here tomorrow or saturday. so out ahead of it, the heat and humidity start pouring on. how about temperatures now? into the 60's. before the night is over with, it is going to cool off nicely. we'll see temperatures drop the 50's. look at that. nothing to talk about yet. we have to talk about what is going to happen tonight. as boston wul sunrise tomorrow morning. 5:40, but temperatures start to warm up. by 10:00, already approaching 80 tomorrow. so things will be warming up. overnight tonight, you will see a few spots into the 50's. not as many as what we saw last night. then there is a cold front to the west. notice the showers out ahead of it. some of these are quite strong. maria: thanks. donald trump planning another trip.

group from the program at carson beach last week. he somehow got separated from other children and his body was found a short time later. inside the church today, family and friends remembered kyzer as an energetic child, who could light up a room. >> some people live 50-60 years and don't touch as many people as he has touched. >> always playful. always smiling. he loved everybody around him. changes at all city-run summer camps. his family, taking solace that these new rules could save another child. ed: new at 11:00 tonight, two animal inspectors are fired following the investigation of dismal conditions at a westport farm. the two town inspectors are accused of failing to address years of unsanitary conditions. last month, hundreds of animals were found in poor health. many were dead. more than a dozen people are under investigation. no charges have been filed.

vaccine. they are ready for clinical trials, they just need fending. mary: with zika spreading in florida, researchers have been working round the clock. >> we are trying to make this vaccine happen as quickly as possible, and we want to deliver it as quickly as possible. senator ed markey today toured a lab at beth israel deaconess med center, where the fight against zika has made a huge breakthrough. researchers here have found a vaccine. it works in mice and monkeys. but it still has to be tested on >> this clinical trial, it's going to right here in the boston area, so we're going to be looking for people who really want to contribute to a zika vaccine and we want them from right here in boston. clinical human trials could start in october. researchers will need 30-50 local volunteers. but there is also an urgent need for funding. >> how many states does it have to hit before we finally have support from the republican party to provide the 1.9

to the president's calling on congress to come back in to pass emergency zika funding. >> i want to urge the american people to call their members of congress and tell them to do their job. deal with this threat and protect the american people from zika. mary: there's enough funding and it it passes human trials. the vaccine created here could be a simple as a flu shot. but it's still months away. mary saladna wcvb newscenter 5. maria: thank you. you've probably used those chip-based credit cards that are supposed to be safer, but there may be a serious security flaw! researchers are now saying the cards' magnetic strip alerting payment machines to use its chip can easily be replicated. card thieves can simply re-write that strip's code to appear like they are using a chipless making counterfeiting easier. experts say this flaw will only cause more complaints from retailers, who argue they were forced by banks to accept

when thunder roar, go indoors. maria: write that down. that is it. meteorologist: after you hear a thunderbolt, you should wait a half-hour before you go back out again. this weekend, saturday afternoon, we could see thunderstorms across the area. the impact of the storms is lightning. the reason being, the thunderstorms coming in during the afternoon. saturday afternoon, outside, you are doing all kinds of things. and noyi to the weather, the storms can come up on you quickly. lightning is a big issue. perhaps gusty winds. hail is not a big threat. downpours throughout. they are isolated. you may get a lot of rain in one spot. not much over here. i am putting in a medium risk as far as saturday is concerned. the other thing, what is the other thing, what is left over from hurricane earl. i thought it was a hurricane. note it is a tropical storm,

we are looking now with winds of 40 miles per hour. as you know we had storms much stronger for the wind category. this has a lot of rain with it. a big wet sponge now moving the way across heading to central parts of mexico. highs today around here. look at this. 90 in lawrence. only 71 in nantucket. big temperature spreads going on today. tomorrow, looks like more and more of us will be close to the 90-degree mark. right now, 71. winds out of the south. dewpoints are manageable. om and that means it is going to feel uncomfortable. tomorrow, the sticky category. saturday up here in the oppressive rain. that sets up for the thunderstorms. then behind look at what happens. the dewpoints drop off. sunday, look spectacular out there. we got the clear skies now. out here to the west, a cold front. it is where the thunderstorms are triggering off. out ahead of it. it gets muggy. behind it, it is nice and dry. the thunderstorms will continue
