biggest waterslide. questions into how a 10-year-old died. diane: new tonight, a student at the controls with the wheel missing. aj:aj: the chance for storms in store. reid: jewelry thieves world's largest water slide. good evening. i'm reid lamberty. diane: i'm diane cho. how the accident happened is still a mystery tonight. newscenter 5's shaun chaiyabhat is at our breaking news desk with new details. shaun: the child who died is the son of a kansas state representative. authorities calling the death an accident. but exactly how the boy died remains unclear. this is the victim, 10-year-old caleb schwab, the son of representative scott schwab. authorities say the boy died while riding the world's tallest waterslide this afternoon at the

the 168-foot-tall slide drops people at 70 miles an hour. varruckt, which means insane in german, is enclosed with netting. riders must be 54 inches to ride and wear a velcro strap across the lap and shoulders. the family released a statement saying -- since the day he was born, he brought abundant joy to our family and all those who he came into contact with. your continued prayers are welcome and appreciated. >> right now, our focus is on our family. i understand the need for information. we will get you the information. shaun: the slide opened in 2014, but encountered problems early on, including practice tests that sent sand bags flying. the ride was later redesigned. the waterpark will remain closed

diane: new at 11:00, we're hearing from one of the people flying this plane as it landed with a wheel missing. no one was hurt when the plane touched down at the beverly regional airport. that's where we find newscenter 5's todd kazakiewich, who talked to the student pilot on that plane. todd: the student pilot is originally from brazil. he's a senior at salem state who decided to learn to fly to overcome his fear of flying. tonight, it's still not clear why the right landing gear failed. but we do know the instructor taught by example, following his training, and landing safely. >> good job. todd: the emergency landing saturday at beverly airport, brings a sigh of relief to spectators, first responders, and the pilots. clip 6 at 8:03-8:06 bruno -- >> we didn't feel anything

todd: but seconds after takeoff, student pilot bruno comprido and his instructor sense something is wrong. >> and then turned right as we supposed to do, and start feeling a little bit weird, the -- weird. todd: the control tower sees the problem. the right landing gear is barely hanging on, that's what makes this landing so tricky. mechanically, the single engine piper warrior is performing normally, so bruno and his instructor fly for about an hour to give emergency crews time to prepare for the emergency landing. >> i was not even thinking about the chance of something happening. todd: when it's time for landing, the student pilot sees his instructor perform a textbook emergency landing with part of the landing gear inoperable. >> it don't feel like it was something as bad as the video. i think you are so focused, like, 'ok, i'm doing this, i'm going to do that after that, '

were back here this morning for another flying lesson which was uneventful. then after a normal landing , people here at the airport showed bruno the video of that emergency landing yesterday. reid: outside right now, an absolutely fantastic sunday night. it really did feel so much better. aj: it felt great t hot today, 89 degrees. i guess you could argue it was a little hot. but the humidity was fairly low. warm, not as warm as today was, and the low humidity as well. check out the temperatures are now. boston is 79 degrees. the city hangs onto that he longest.

look at the doppler radar. you can find some showers working through northern new england. we are generally quiet all the way out through michigan and back down to the central portion of the eastern seaboard. temperatures for boston bottomed out in the 60's tonight. mostly clear ski away from the city, you will drop back into the 50's tonight. very comfortable. however, heat, humidity and storms back in the forecast. i will time it out for you in a few minutes. reid: hurricane earl turning deadly as it moves through mexico. at least 38 people died after heavy rains triggered landslides that buried homes across the country. the hurricane has since been downgraded to a tropical storm but heavy rain is still expected.

afternoon. its expected to make landfall by early tuesday. diane: there's still a bullet hole in a home in worcester where two women were injured. the victims were inside an apartment on perry avenue when a stray bullet flew in from outside. newscenter 5's nicole estaphan reports, the gunman is still on the run. >> i was in the house watching television. three shots and that was it. nicole: in the middle of the day, multiple shots fired on perry avenue in worcester saturday. the violence missin' but sending fear through a quiet neighborhood. >> everyone went down on the floor they didn't know what was going on. nicole: residents inside this triple decker rushed for cover. after a stay bullet hit the second floor, traveling straight through the wall where several women were gathered. >> she was doing her hair. that is when the bullet went through the wall and went through her leg.

high heat. >> in any small fire would immediately spread. reid: no one was injured in the fire. the home did sustain extensive damage, but is structurally sound and able to be rebuilt. 19 people are without a home tonight in new hampshire after a suspicious fire. flames broke out at an apartment complex on spruce street in manchester late last night. the fire reached three alarms. the first firefighters on scene people trapped on the 4th floor. crews were able to rescue them. the fire was so hot that residents and a firefighter came out with their clothes smoking. >> it looks like the fire had originated in the exterior in the porch. most porches are very dry this time of your head once they get going, they spread like wildfire of the side of the building. reid: no one was injured. the cause is still under investigation. diane: commitment 2016 tonight,

reid: it seemed like a good plan. cut a hole through the roof to rob a jewelry store. this is the hole andrew kang says two burglars cut out, then climbed dropping into his family's jewelry store, hanging on to an extension cord. >> they cut a hole through the first roof and then they made their way through the second roof, through the ceiling as well. reid: kang's family has been in business here in providence for 20 years. there are bars just inside the front door and a security system, which is what alerted them and police to the break-in. in fact, police were already here when andrew arrived. his concern was that someone was still inside and that there would be a confrontation with officers. >> they noified us that somebody had come through the roof and they needed to get into the premises.

arrested two men behind the store in a parking lot. none of the jewelry is kept on display overnight, so nothing was stolen. but there is damage left behind, from roofing materials on the floor to the thermostat that was ripped out of the wall. >> there's a hole in the ceiling and there's a new skylight and just a lot of clean-up. reid: a contractor was brought in to patch up the roof. the owner says he's seen a lot of changes in the neighborhood over the last 20 years and he's sadly not too surprised by this. diane: a new warning tonight -- your cell phone. identity thieves now finding new ways to hijack your account. one family discovered thieves gained access to an online account, created fake i-ds and took over. the hackers bought three new i-phones on the family's bill. but the damage can go beyond your phone. some thieves even gain access to personal information like credit cards. >> close to $11,000 in charges i

a fraudulent charge or not. the thieves had my number. he can say, sure, yeah. diane: experts say to call your carrier to add an actually are security. reid: new safety measures being put into place at disney world after a child was killed by an alligator. a stone wall is going up along the beaches at seven seas lagoon. a two-year-old nebraska boy was dragged into the lake by an alligator while vacationing with his family in june. his body was found 16 hours later. diane: this is welcome news for anyone taking a summer road trip . gas prices continue to fall for the ninth straight week. the average price across the country is $2.16 for a gallon of regular. that's 55 cents lower than this time a year ago. the average price here in massachusetts is $2.11.

vineyard vacation. he tee'ed off at farm neck golf club in oak bluffs around one this afternoon. mike: we had the low dew points and the abundant sunshine. it was a great dane a matter what you're doing, bike riding, jogging, heading to the beach. what is not so great is the impact it of this drought that is starting -- a profound impact in the area. that was treated to me earlier. there are some downed trees and a lot of rocks is exposed. you can see much more water coming over the falls. you can see any of the debris down there. just the tops of the rocks.

irrigation. there's not a lot of water going to them. right now, much of the state, in terms of the water trick me through some of these streams, it is said about the fifth percentile. hopefully, we will get some rain in here. it doesn't look like it will happen tomorrow or tuesday. some high-impact thunderstorms are a possibility for wednesday. with that, it will be hit or miss. not everybody is what you get them. but those that do will pick up some much-needed rain. thursday. right now, the weather map showing us generally clear skies across most of massachusetts and into new hampshire. we had some thunder showers or showers, i should say, from earlier. quiet all the way through the upper midwest, through the mid-atlantic states, showers and thunderstorms working down through lafayette in louisiana. aside from that, it is in the 70's to near 80 degrees.

humidity is still well down to the south. however, that plays a role in our forecast, too. dry enough forecast tonight. then i want you to concentrate on these reds and oranges. that is really uncomfortable. watch as the higher dew point air starts filtering northward. tuesday night into wednesday, it starts to turn very and comfortable once again. you feel uncomfortable, but the moisture in the year helps to feed potential thunderstorm activity. it is going to be how to the nation's midsection right through tomorrow. look at the heat. it spreads to the eastern seaboard. we will time it all out for you in the seven-day. 60 to 66 in some of your cities. rule areas dipping back into the 50's. a comfortable life for sleeping.
