cindy: you couldn't even see outside yesterday and it's the kind of morning where it is still very humid, so there is the threat for storms today with a lot going on weather-wise and in boston and 78, and there you can see the dew point in the lower 70's, the stickier that will make it oppressive today and post at risk for the heat we have that heat advisory around the cape, not just in boston but in the suburbs, lower 70's through the cave in the mid-70's. a few patchy clouds to the south, but those will stay offshore and as we get into the afternoon, showers and thunderstorms will he popping up -- we are quickly into the 80's

today. that risk of severe storms comes between 2:00 and 8:00 and notice it will be mid to upper 90's once again and when you factor in the humidity it will feel like 100 degrees. i will walk you through the weekend, but right now we want to get you out to the roads and see how we are doing. olessa: distress looks good, -- this stretch looks several vehicles involved in the crash. the westbound side has one leg getting through, eastbound, all laser shot down. if you are traveling through that stretch, we will keep you posted and let you know when it reopens. in the meantime, expect heavy delays. hello 128, asked -- along 128, expect some delays. we have two lanes that are still closed for a couple more minutes

starting on schedule. randy: breaking overnight, a fiery crash sets off a terrifying chain reaction shutting down a busy highway, the intense flames startling drivers stuck in construction traffic. erika: the eyeopener's antoinette antonio is live in newton with the video and what we've learned overnight. antoinette: this crash involved several cars and a lot of flames, just over there on the other side of to that video -- here is what we know from witnesses, and minivan rear-ended another vehicle, not realizing that all the cars in front of them have slowed down to a crawl because of that construction and that is when the minivan burst into flames, everyone quickly getting out of the vehicle -- the witness we said said it had the car while

that chain reaction crash, a total of four cars involved -- it's unknown how serious the injuries are and at this point in the investigation we are still not sure why the driver did not slow down. all lanes are back open this morning, no impact on your morning commute. antoinette antonio, wcvb newscenter 5. erika: also breaking overnight, a frightening flight for passengers from logan airport. we're talking about turbulence so severe the pilot had to as possible. two dozen people were hurt. jet blue flight 429 took off from logan last night headed for sacramento. but they hit extreme turbulence forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in south dakota. casey corcoran from milton was on board with his young kids. it was almost like a bang, like we hit a wall and just dropped straight down. there was stuff in the aisles, you had people crying. erika: casey says within 15 minutes that plane was on the ground.

is being brought in to bring passengers to california. we'll keep you posted as we get new information. randy: a disturbing story out of rhode island, where a father is charged with leaving his 3-year-old son alone in a sweltering car. cranston police say the man had taken another child into a dentist's office. the boy was left with the windows cracked open just an inch, the temperature 93 degrees inside the car. someone wa little boy and called for help. police say the child was really >> the guy was standing there holding one child and all he kept saying was i was just going to be a minute. randy: police say the child was really there for nearly 40 minutes. the boy was crying and sweaty as he was taken to the hospital. he's expected to be ok. his father is facing cruelty and child neglect charges. erika: mayor marty walsh voicing his support for a plan to lower the speed limit throughout

crash back in march. a car involved in a drag race, jumped the curb and hit a pedestrian walking down beacon street. the city council is now working on a bill to lower the speed limit to 25. the mayor says that could help saves lives. he will sign the bill if it reaches his desk. boston police officers are being asked to take extra precautions after learning someone may be tampering with personal cars. >> on the line every day, and to have this type of vandalism on their cars is scary and certainly we are concerned about it, trying to find them. erika: there have been three separate incidents within the last month. officers found the lug nuts of their personal car's tires either missing or loose. the first incident happened july 15 in the downtown area, the second on august 4 in roxbury, and the most recent being wednesday night in east boston.

is being held without bail charged with raping a 16-year-old girl. prosecutors say darnell booth used his job driving for uber to meet the teen. he collapsed as the charges were read in court yesterday. booth allegedly started communicating with the victim on snapchat after driving her on june 30 then offered to drive her to school and assaulted her in an everett parking lot. 5 investigates has learned booth has an eight page criminal history. boston mayor marty walsh says that raises concerns about how the company operates. >> we may have to go further. i feel like we could do it -- we have the ability to do it. randy: just last friday, governor baker signed a new law requiring background checks for uber drivers and other rideshare companies. uber called this latest incident deeply upsetting and says booth has been permanently banned. a scathing new report from the state is blasting a troubled

"the globe" reporting problems uncovered at the braemoor health center are so troubling, that residents were deemed to be in immediate jeopardy. the facility is no longer allowed to accept new patients and is facing steep fines. synergy health centers of new jersey, which runs the center, says it is working with the state health department to improve care. erika: caught on camera, a commuter rail train slamming into a pick-up truck on the tracks in wakefield. sources tell us that truck driver is robert thompson, a 76-year-old retired wakefield firefighter. take a closer look at that surveillance video. the pickup does not appear to stop or slow as it collides with the train. although mbta officials say the bells were ringing and the gates were down. the train pushed the pickup about 100 yards down the tracks before it came to a full stop. bob young, who works nearby, ran out to help the driver.

but also some storms may pop up. if you have a chance to look up overnight, it was beautiful. this is from maine, the perseid meteor showers. it's up there in the sky it is such a treat to see these. we aren't going to see much more now starting to creep up close to the horizon. we have another few hours before it pops up and we will start thinking quickly this morning as we head up at the 90's. yesterday in boston it was one of the hottest days of the year so it will be another how one out there today. we still have the oppressive

up, with the heat index around 100 degrees. dew point is in the 70's, so oppressive humidity levels, temperatures already running in the 70's. as you head toward the cave it is starting out in the mid-70's. a couple patchy clouds and showers that are fizzling out to the south -- nothing happening just yet. we will see the temperatures jump up like it's near 90 degrees and as we get into the afternoon you can see the heat index jumping over 100 degrees. the actual delays may be just a degree or two lower. 95 in lawrence, but that is due to increasing cloud cover as we get showers hopping up this afternoon. storm predictions give us a marginal risk for storms, generally between 2:00 and 8:00

that not a lot is happening. then the clouds start to build and by the afternoon, a couple storms popping up. within these storms, embedded downpours and localized floods. some of the storms may have stronger window that could do damage. then overnight everything will wind -- another uncomfortable night for sleeping. we are watching this front to the north, cooler air and a few showers, that front starting to move down across the area. only in the 70's tomorrow, still in the 90's on the other side of that frontal boundary. it may provide a focus for more showers and storms.

coast and the cape. a fairly quiet start to the day, but as we get into the afternoon, we will be watching for some showers and thunderstorms, so keep that in mind if you are going to sneak away to the beach. it is a low tide around midday, and we will lost the sun drop southward. after being in the 90's today, a little cooler tomorrow with showers and storms popping up in the afternoon. we are right back in the heat on 90's by then. randy: football is back. the patriots hosting the saints in their first pre-season game. jimmy garrapolo in at q.b., playing without gronk, edelman or danny amendola. after a slow start, it was jamie collins with the 43-yard interception return for a touchdown. in the second garappalo to james white for 56 yards. he takes it all the way down to the one-yard line.

storms around. we have that heat advisory up once again with the heat index climbing to around 100 degrees for much of the afternoon, a tough day to the outside. a marginal risk for some severe storms this afternoon, between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. for portions of new england. right now there are just some patchy long island, dying thunderstorms that are heading out, a quiet start but it is still sticky, 73 is what you are stepping out to in worcester, jumping out of the 70's and into the 80's with sun and clouds through lunchtime as we get into the afternoon we are watching your with temperatures in the 90's. 94, 95, about the same in

determine if she was sexually assaulted. and it's still not clear if she was targetted or if the murder was random. investigators clearly making progress in this case. and we will bring you new information as soon as we get it. sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. erika: governor charlie baker says he's reviewing a bill that would offer new protections for animals in massachusetts. the plan would ban owners from leaving a pet locked in a car in extreme weather. and it would allow a passerby to break car window and free the animal if it seems to be in baker says, as a dog owner, he likes some aspects of the bill but hasn't said he'll sign it. randy: right now, a brockton man is facing charges accused of robbing a taxi driver to avoid paying his fare. police say dashuane johnson took a cab from brockton to taunton wednesday night. but as the driver was making change johnson allegedly pulled out a knife threatened him and took off with the cash. police caught up to him but

wave of deadly bombing attacks. there have been explosions in at least four areas of the country, including popular beach cities. at least four people are dead and dozens more wounded. officials say they're not sure who carried out the attacks. erika: federal investigators are expected to reveal new information on the sinking of the el faro. the cargo ship's data recorder was recovered earlier this week. the ship sank last fall en route to puerto rico during hurricane joaquin. all 33 crew members were killed. investigators from the national transportation safety board are expected to give an update on what that data recovered revealed today. randy: right now an urgent search is underway for several people still missing after an apartment building explosion in silver spring, maryland. at least two are dead, dozens more are hurt including three firefighters. it took crews nearly 10 hours to control the fire as flames tore through the four-story building
