>> from boston's news leader, noon. emily: good afternoon. thanks for joining us. i'm emily riemer. here are some of the stories we're following right now. a new lift span for the cold river bridge is being put into place. communities just devastated by flooding in louisiana. six people are dead and more than 20,000 people rescued. and officials say the worst may not be over. and a community prepares to pay its respects to a young woman attacked and killed while out for a run. police are following hundreds of leads in the search for vanessa marcotte's killer. newscenter 5's sera congi is

sera? sera: emily, as investigators try to solve this murder, residents continue to be anxious and some are coming forward and speaking up your they are questioning why the community was not alerted sooner the young woman had gone missing. it has been a little over a week since 27-year-old vanessa marcotte went for a run on brooks station road, not far from her mother's home around 1 p.m. last sunday. when she did not return home, her family reported her missing. at 8:05 pm, the town's code red alert system sent a recorded message to residents to be on the lookout. marcotte's body was found in the dense woods off the road at 8:20, the victim of a homicide. >> we didn't get a code red until 8:00. we have code reds for bears, for detours, but we didn't get a

sera: longtime resident ed carlson says many people in princeton want to know when police were alerted to vanessa's disappearance, and why the phone alert did not go out sooner. >> and i know some people would have gotten into their cars and gone up and down brooks station road as soon as that happened , you know, looking for this girl. sera: the town administrator says that a statement will be forthcoming. thar town that have permission to issue those phone alerts, including police. the one for vanessa came from emergency management. life in princeton, sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. emily: a bit cooler today. still warm, sunny. quiet for now, but how long does that last? cindy: hmm. we had those thunderstorms

that energy is coming our direction. here we go again with thunderstorms. he storm prediction center is eyeing us here in new england with a marginal threat of severe thunderstorms tomorrow. we will watch that moisture and energy off to the west. for the moment though, we have the cold front to our south and that will squash the oppressive humidity to the south there. sticky and uncomfortable, but nothing like the oppressive humidity over the weekend. right now 85 in boston. but we were 96 yesterday. you see the dew point in the lower 60's now with the west-northwesterly wind. low 80's on the cape. upper 70's up to worcester county now. as we go through the rest of the afternoon, it is a blend of sun and clouds. we will hold it up in the 80's

for a sea breeze to develop. this is like nashua, lawrence all flirting with that 90 degree mark today. we will track thunderstorms for tomorrow coming up. emily: all right, new at noon, weymouth detectives are asking for the public's help in finding an alleged bank robber. 30-year-old jamie smith of weymouth is wanted in connection with the unarmed robbery of the eastern bank on washington street. passed a note demanding money. he made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. at least one person was engineered in this overnight crash in topsfield. this is video from the scene near route 1. all lanes on 95 south are open now. the highway was shutdown overnight while police responded to the crash. a $244 million project is underway right now on the south shore. a new lift span for the fore river bridge is being installed

been watching today's progress live from weymouth. doug? doug: hi, emily. today marks a milestone in the fowler river -- fore river projects. that lift span. this is a process that started before 3:00 this morning. the orchestrated chorus of tug boats toots and whistles pierced the early morning darkness as crews skillfully navigated this hulking piece of connecting roadway down the fore river. weighing in at almost 3 million pounds and measuring more than the length of a football field, this lift span for the new fore river bridge is a welcome sight for locals. >> it's just amazing to see this thing put together. doug paul burwell live just down : the street from the bridge. what do you think it's going to mean to the community to finally

it will be a lot better. doug: although final completion is still a year away, some saw the significance of the moment and wanted to be a part of it. what time did you get here to watch this? >> 3:00. i saw it come out of the ship yard. doug: 3:00 a.m.? >> yes, it's history being made. doug: it's kind of the heart of the project. ron walker is a life long resident of weymouth and is recording a mini documentry of this momumnetal undertaking that's finally taking shape. >> it's a bridge. so that's kind of the excitment for everybody. it's finally here. doug: finally is a relative term. this is already two years delayed. we are told we should see some traffic crossing it by fall of 2018, but we are inching our way closer to that date. doug meehan, wcvb newscenter 5. emily: all right, doug, thank you. right now a fire on plum island , is under investigation.

night. the fire quickly spread to three alarms. fire crews from all over the merrimack valley responded. no one was hurt. two boston firefighters are recovering right now after this fire in mattapan. it started at a home on alabama street last night the heat making the flames worse. the two firefighters were treated for minor injuries. officials believe the flames were started by a powerful lightbulb that was too close to flammable materials. that home suffered about $150,000 worth of damage. one of the members of the teamsters local 25 is expected to plead guilty to extortion char four teamsters are accused of intimidating the staff and crew of the top chef reality show while it was shot in the boston area two years ago. "the herald" reporting mark harrington will change his plea next month. a chase suspect is facing several charges. police say joshua mousette crashed into police cruisers early yesterday after leading officers on a chase through

mousette was hurt in the crash, but not seriously. he was wanted before the chase, and now faces new charges. protests erupt into violence in milwaukee after the shooting death of a black man by police. at least one person was shot during last night's demonstrations. and the city struggling to come together after a weekend of chaos. abc's elizabeth hur reports, the ends of the bank killed our calling for peace. >> protesters boiling over. angry crowds protesting the deadly shooting off and allegedly armed a black man during a traffic stop. >> shots fired, shots fired. elizabeth: the chaos destroying this patrol car, burning businesses, and at least one

afternoon after the 23-year-old suspect, seen in this facebook picture, was shot and killed by an officer, who was also black. according to authorities, the officer ordered him to drop his weapon, but when the suspect did not comply, the officer opened fire. the confrontation caught on the officer's body camera. shows what i know what i saw on the video. i know what i see in the still. it certainly seems t was a credible and legally protected decision. elizabeth: smith's family demanded justice, but pleaded with the public to demonstrate easily. >> stopped burning down -- stop burning down businesses. elizabeth: the body camera footage will be released as soon as possible. the officer was not injured and

york. emily: commitment 2016 -- democrats and hoping democrats. vice president joe biden and hillary clinton campaigning together in pennsylvania. the two served together in the obama administration. right now clinton leaves republican donald trump in that battleground state. meantime, donald trump will be in ohio to outline his plans to take on isis. he sent out a twitter attack yesterday saying the media is putting "false meaningnt trump's running mate, mike pence, will hold an event in manchester, new hampshire on thursday. the registration deadline to vote in the state primary is this week. massachusetts voters must register by friday if they have not already. the state primary is september 8. there are no statewide races, but nominees will be chosen in congressional and legislative districts and for some county offices. in today's gymnastics meet in rio, simone biles is the one to

>> you are watching newscenter 5 at noon. emily: right now, new york's jfk airport is back to normal after travelers got a big scare. reports of gunfire prompted evacuations at two terminals last night. port authority police say they have not found any firearms or any other evidence of gunfire at the airport. rents continue skyrocket in boston and affordable housing advocates are sounding the alarm. many saying even middle class families are being forced out of the city. just in the last six years, the price for a single-family rental home has gone from $1500 a month to more than $2500. governor baker says his administration is working on a plan to invest millions in affordable housing not just in boston, but statewide. if you've got kids heading back to college soon, here's a couple of things that can lower your costs. first, go through those fees with a fine tooth comb. do you need school health insurance? legal services? make sure you know everything you're paying for. second, save on textbooks. buying used isn't a new idea.

caught on camera. this woman in baton rouge pulled from her sinking car just in the nick of time. more than 30 inches of rain in a week triggered historic flooding and a state of emergency. at least six dead, 20,000 people rescued from rising waters. >> even though it was an unnamed storm, there were historic levels of rivers anything like this in the past. kenneth: the u.s. coast guard in the air making daring rescues. the wii louisiana national guard on the ground. more than 200 roads are closed or impassable. >> we have road closures all across the state of louisiana. the water is dangerous in terms of coverage on the roads. kenneth: 2000 people in shelters. many escaped with just the close on their backs.

we stand at this level, pretty impressive stuff in the record books. really impressive rainfall around here. does not look like we will be seeing widespread rainfall anytime soon. we are watching this area of moisture, st. louis. this will be working our direction tomorro with some severe weather as well. these thunderstorms may pack a hunch. a marginal threat of severe thunderstorms and the primary concern is the humidity comes away up again and there will be heavy rainfall. also lightning, just like we saw over the weekend. and the potential for damaging

tomorrow particularly during the afternoon and evening. blue skies, clouds starting to pop on up. overall, it has been a mostly sunny day. 85 degrees. that west, northwesterly wind has brought some wind. not that oppressive humidity. this is what triggered thunderstorms the last evening. the moisture well lived back into our regions. you can see the satellite image pretty quiet across new england. temperatures responding to the sunshine. low 80's right now. nashua, 81. lawrence, 83. upper 70's, low 80's worcester county. look on the cape -- lower 80's. temperatures are going to hold

are dropping back. a few communities will be toward that 90 degree mark. the evening hours, you have outdoor plants, things will stay quiet for you. i would say after midnight clouds will start to move and. the -- move in. boundary lift toward us tomorrow. the warm front triggering showers and thunderstorms and even wednesday, this cool front will be in the vicinity and that means a lingering shower going on into your wednesday morning as well. tomorrow is a high-impact weather day. there may be a couple showers in the morning. notice the scattered nature of

to potentially severe thunderstorms developing mid-to-late afternoon. those will track west to east and these could deep going. it will be an active weather day tomorrow. thursday, we will watch another front to the north. this will come down thursday afternoon and as a comes down, it may induce a spot shower. you are difference friday into next weekend. it looks like we will those temperatures in the near 80's next week. eyes on the sky tomorrow. emily: all right, cindy, thanks. she may be the premier singer of the day, but adele turns a super bowl offer down. the singer told fans in los angeles that she was offered the halftime slot but said no. adele says the super bowl halftime show isn't really about music and that she's no beyonce when it comes to dancing.
