randy: good morning, it's wednesday, august 17. i'm randy price. emily: i'm emily riemer. stories we're following on the eyeopener right now, three people including a child are hurt after a crash in boston. what witnesses say they were doing just before they were hit. randy: a close call for several people in lowell. the search for a shooter firing into homes. for the white house. the campaign shake up overnight. and the new attacks on the trail. randy: good morning, cindy. already very warm. cindy: definitely all last night. still 80 degrees in boston, and look at that dewpoint temperature. 75 degrees, tropical outside. the wind is gusting 25 miles per hour, bringing in oppressive humidity. but if you look out to the west, you are drier.

by mass ave. 24 looks good, so does 95. construction clearing on 128. last construction zone on route 3 by 128, trains and buses starting on schedule. randy: stories we're following right now, a dedham man is dead after crashing his pickup truck into a tree in boston. police say the 44-year-old man whose name has not been released drove off the road in stony brook reservation in west roxbury last night. injuries. emily: a quincy man is hurt after being hit by a car. this happened around 9:30 last night on washington street. police say the 21-year-old ran out in front of the car. he was taken to the hospital, but it's unclear how seriously he was hurt. randy: right now, three people are hurt including a child after a car crash in boston. and this morning a father is credited with pushing his daughter out of the car's way. this was the scene around 8:30 last night at the corner of blue

the herald reports the man and his 10-year-old daughter were walking a friend to a bus stop. that's when witnesses say the car went up onto the median. >> it looks like he was about to turn, and then he made a mistake, like a wrong turn. but for him to take a turn, i don't know. i don't know how that happened. randy: the girl's father suffered the most serious inju, police say all are expected to survive. that driver did stay at the scene. emily: right now police are trying to find whoever is randomly shooting into homes while people were asleep in the city of lowell. it's a story first on five. and this morning, the hunt is on for clues in this disturbing trend as many as four separate shootings. the most recent early monday morning. a random bullet went through the window of this home as an

window, and it took a whole in my curtain. emily: in one case, a neighbor says he saw a white car speeding away after the shots. no one has been hurt in any of the incidents. police say it's unclear if they are connected. randy: right now a police officer is under arrest, charged with an alarming crime. the eyeopener's antoinette antonio is at everett police headquarters with what we've learned. antoinette: right now that everett officer is being held without bail. prosecutors say he attacked his pregnant wife. prosecutors say the attack happened in the couple's home in salisbury sunday night. officer michael mori's wife who is seven months pregnant says he kicked her in the stomach, in addition to hitting her in the face. mori, who is a three year veteran of the force, is facing a number of charges, assault and

assault and battery on a pregnant victim. and strangulation. he's also on administrative leave without pay. antoinette antonio, wcvb newscenter 5. randy: a former lowell police officer is expected in court today for his final hearing before trial. eric wayne is charged with motor-vehicle homicide and manslaughter stemming from a deadly 2014 crash. he's accused of driving drunk in august of that year, when he alle methuen killing driver bryant paula. wayne's trial is expected to start next month. emily: breaking overnight in commitment 2016, a big shake up on the campaign trail for donald trump. the eyeopener's erika tarantal is following new information just coming in. erika: donald trump just revealing that he's now bringing in breitbart news executive steven bannon to lead his campaign. the conservative website has been highly critical of establishment candidates like

on tuesday trump tried to bolster his claims that he is the law and order candidate during a trip to wisconsin. >> those peddling the narrative of tough of a racist war, supported with a nod by my opponent, shared directly in the responsibility for the unrest in milwaukee and many other places within our country. erika: milwaukee was the scene of violent protests this weekend after an armed black man was shot by a police officer. meantime, democrat hillary clinton tried to keep the focus on trump's recent comments about isis. >> it just absolutely be welders me, when i hear donald trump tie to talk about national security. what he often says hurts us. it sends the wrong message. erika: also today, donald trump will get his first classified intelligence briefing.

randy: police in princeton are still investigating the murder of a jogger as her family and friends bury her. the funeral was yesterday for vanessa marcotte at a church in leominster. the 27-year-old had been living in new york, but was visiting her mom in princeton when she was killed 11 days ago while running. investigators have received more than 600 tips, but no arrests have been announced. emily: 65 years later, the remains of a local war hero are finally home. a flag-draped casket carried the remains of corporal ronald sparks off a plane at logan airport yesterday. a procession then guided sparks to his hometown of cambridge. he died at the age of 19 in a prisoner of war camp during the korean war. his remains were only recently identified from a dna sample submitted by his nephew. >> could you tell me how that felt when you got that all call -- that phone call question mark >> my throat tightened, my eyes welled up, i had to call back

dew point in the mid-70's with that florida feel and the gusty wind. oppressive humidity levels now, and dew points are going from the 70's down to the six -- the 60's. a blasted humidity out the door, and by lunchtime it is starting to come down and then in the afternoon and evening the humidity really goes down. front, trying to trigger some storms -- it is pushing into connecticut with a lot of lightning and then it all falls apart. no indications -- it is mainly dry throughout the day. 76 in worcester, near 80 down to

active. look at this southwesterly wind, 25 miles per hour, shifting to the west and once the sun goes by, that westerly wind is pulling in the dryer air which allows the humidity to come down. but temperatures don't change a whole lot before we go into the mid to upper 80's. if you are trying to sneak away it is a great day for it through the afternoon. and then overnight, clear to partly cloudy skies. there is some rain on the long island but it will stay there. temperatures dropping back more, and we may actually fall back into the upper 50's tonight, so tonight you can open up the windows.

this frontier to the north will be dropping through over the course of the day, and it may trigger an isolated shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon, but look at the temperatures. as we get into the afternoon, we can watch the french drop down to the north. organized up across northern new england and as it drops southward, a really slim chance of anything popping up. most areas won't seeny thunderstorm. behind it, less humid air is working in. looks great saturday into sunday. so we need the rain. olessa: a relief, thank you. so far, quiet start on the roads. there it is, looking nice and quiet in both directions.

still in place for just a little longer on the expressway. then as you head south, routes 3 looks good. 95 checking in ok, construction picking up on 128. north of town, construction just cleared. transit buses are starting the morning on schedule. emily: right now, a state of emergency in california over this wildfire. 82,000 people are evacuated as the blue cut fire quickly spreads. the fire was discovered bernardino mountains of east los angeles. it's intense devouring 11 acres in just minutes. this morning it's consumed some 15,000 acres and is still out of control. randy: for the first time this season a person in massachusetts has been diagnosed with west nile virus. the department of public health says the patient is a woman in her 70's who lives in middlesex county. she's in the hospital. the state says there are more mosquitoes that could spread

temperatures and drought conditions. emily: 5 on the opioid crisis, researchers at umass medical school are testing new devices that could help doctors in the fight against addiction. the devices come as bracelets, or as a pill you can swallow. they could help doctors learn more about how addiction happens and how bodies react to opioids early on. that could eventually aid with prescribing and treatment. testing is expected to take place over the next two years. asian markets mostly higher overnight, after declines yesterday on wall street. right now, stock futures here are lower. investors are looking ahead to the release of notes today from the federal reserve's july meeting over when to raise interest rates. the nation's second largest car company is now making self-driving vehicles a top priority. ford says it will have a fully autonomous vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals on the road within 5-years.

randy: time for your early news to go. emily: a deadly crash is under investigation in west roxbury. a 44-year-old dedham man was killed last night when the truck he was driving crashed into a tree in the stony brook reservation. his passenger suffered serious injuries. randy: convicted murderer aaron hernandez will go to trial for a 2012 double-murder in boston's south end.

hernandez is charged with the murders of daniel de abreu and safiro furtado. but the defense is already challenging key witnesses. they plan to file a motion to limit the testimony of those who identified hernandez as the killer. emily: new details about the 15-year-old boy shot several times in south boston. neighbors say the teen is a good kid known for his skills on the basketball court and for volunteering to feed other kids in the community. the victim was shot three times as he monday night. he suffered serious injuries. no arrests have been made. randy: a brockton teenager is recovering after he was shot. police say the 17-year-old was targeted last night, while sitting with friends on a bench at the chatham west apartments. the teen was shot in the foot, and near his left eye. police say he is giving conflicting statements about what happened. emily: a scare in keene, new hampshire. someone spotted this doll inside a hot car yesterday and thought it was a baby.

window before realizing the life-like doll was not real. police say they wouldn't have done anything differently. they do say they'll cover the damage to the car. the son of jailed mexican drug lord el chapo guzman has reportedly been kidnapped. authorities believe 29-year-old jesus alfredo guzman salazar was among a dozen people taken from an upscale restaurant in the resort city of puerto vallarta. police found identification and vehicles tied to salazar at the scene. among rival drug cartels is responsible. randy: more rain for louisiana adds to an already historic flood. at least 11 people have been killed more than 30,000 rescued since the flooding began last week. the southern part of the state is the worst hit. president obama has promised federal disaster aid. hot temperatures causing problems for the pilgrim nuclear power plant.

slow down. that water is used to cool down systems at the plymouth plant. this is the third summer in the plant's history where heat has affected operations. the company doesn't know when the plant will return to full power. emily: mookie betts on fire for the red sox in baltimore. he batted-in all 5 runs last night against the orioles. it was scoreless until the fifth when betts hit this three-run homer. the orioles tied it up in seventh. the eighth with a two-run shot. sox win, 5-3. they're back in baltimore tonight at 7:05. betts was impressive but we think this is the play of the day. the cubs' anthony rizzo doesn't just catch a brewers' pop-up. he jumps onto the stands and casually reaches over to grab the ball. nothing to see here, folks. and then back on his way. [laughter] cindy: we are now past the midpoint of august. the past four days now have been at or above 90 degrees. for the month of august they are running far above average. although we will not be touching the 90 degree mark over the next couple still be running above average. in the next few days we will go up into the 80's. it should be above average through the upcoming weekend. things are quieting down. it was an active day yesterday.

but those have full and apart, and things are pretty quiet in southern new england. we have a front coming through, and although it will be a warm day, humidity will be dropping. low to mid 80's today, from new york down to d.c. it will be at or above 90. and there is some moisture coming out of the gulf of mexico,it should be above averae through the upcoming weekend. things are quieting down. it was an active day yesterday. there were so storms coming out of new york state into heating up along this final boundary dropping to the south. we will be drying things out the next couple days. in the tropics, a brand-new tropical depression. this one just came off the coast of africa, southwest of cape verde. the wind is 35 miles per hour, and it is moving northwest. it's and you will see that it won't really bother anyone. but of course we will watch it and keep you posted. in the meantime, the humidity drops today, and outside that isolated shower population we are dry heading into the weekend. the next chance of showers and thunderstorms probably comes early next week. we do desperately need the rain. we will break down the forecast right now, as the eye-opener continues. >> now, on newscenter 5's
