emily: good morning, it's thursday, august 18. i'm emily riemer. randy: i'm randy price. following breaking news on the eyeopener right now, two american olympic swimmers held overnight in brazil. why they were pulled from their plane. and told they can't leave. emily: drug cases mishandled by this woman are now up in the air. the new decision that could set some convicts free. randy: new calls to fix the water issues at several boston public schools. the dramatic push from parents this morning. emily: we will get to those stories, but first we are checking in with cindy. another cool start to the day. cindy: different from yesterday. it is still 71, but without the humidity. it is feeling very different. a light wind out of the west, dew point around 60. suburbs are running in the 60's

50's from orange to keene. the further north you go, you are away from cloud cover. there are showers across western connecticut, and this area will shift eastward. clouds are streaming off it, reaching toward the route 2 court or. -- corridor. a full moon this morning. a wave low pressure will keep the rain to the south, but as wo temperatures will come up to about 80 degrees at lunchtime, 80's this afternoon. an area of showers in parts of connecticut and rhode island. we may see a spot shower, but otherwise it is a blend of sun and clouds. it will be a late afternoon spot shower. let's get you out to the roads and see how we are looking.

these swimmers will not be allowed to leave rio until they provide testimony to investigators. the controversy swirling around ryan lochte and his teammates just growing this morning. this is video overnight showing the crush of reporters as jack conger and gunnar bentz were escorted out of the rio airport this morning. they were pulled off a flight back to the u.s. investigators say they want to talk to the athletes after finding little evidence to support their claims they were robbed at gunpoint on sunday. ryan lochte himself is back inth he left before his teammates were detained. we expect to learn more today when they talk to authorities. and we'll bring you updates as we get them. emily: other stories we're following right now, a warning to people in boston's back bay about a peeping tom. residents are putting posters up along marlborough street saying someone has been peeking into windows several times over the last few weeks. boston police tell us they are boosting patrols in the area. randy: investigators are looking into the death of a two-year-old girl in somersworth, new hampshire.

for an unresponsive toddler. that child was pronounced dead. investigators are waiting on a toxicology report which could take months. emily: new this morning, more than 24,000 drug cases could be wiped out. in some cases, suspects set free. the eyeopener's todd kazakiewich is live in boston with the latest fallout from a drug lab scandal. todd? todd: the state's highest court has agreed to hear arguments from the american civil liberties union that all of those 24,400 cases were mishandled by this woman former state lab chemist annie dookhan. the supreme judicial court initially rejected the aclu's attempt to get the convictions tossed. but the court recently agreed to hear arguments, after learning that many of those cases have yet to be re-processed. dookhan worked at the lab between 2004 and 2010 handling as many as 40,000 samples in that time. she pleaded guilty to several

evidence. the aclu will present its arguments in november. live in boston, todd kazakiewich, wcvb newscenter 5. randy: right now this convicted sex offender is back behind bars. and that is raising big questions in one community. like why was he free in the first place? the eyeopener's antoinette antonio is live in norwood with the concerns this morning. concerns. this guy has a long rap sheet. and now that he's locked up on new charges police say they've had enough. that's 49-year-old chad falcone in handcuffs again yesterday. police say his record shows a slew of the same kind of crimes exposing himself to women. a life-long resident, norwood police say they've been dealing with falcone since 1989. the level 2 sex offender has been arraigned 14 times for 23

>> i think he keeps getting let out because it's nonviolent, but there are kids out there and the neighbors are fed up and we are fed up. antoinette: out on bail in two open cases, police found falcone hiding in the basement after his latest offense. just like last time. live in norwood, antoinette antonio, wcvb newscenter 5. emily: 5 investigates the fate of a convicted killer is now in the hands of a judge. yesterday, fred weichel's original defense attorney took the stand testifying that he believes his former client deserves a new trial. he testified that in 1981, he never had access to a braintree police report, the so called leahy report, that suggests another man could have committed the crime. >> what would that have done to

opened up a lot of possibilities that indicated there were other people out there with motive and opportunity. emily: testimony wrapped up after a three-day hearing. lawyers have until mid-september to get their final written arguments in before a judge's decision. randy: new this morning, some boston parents are calling on the city to replace the pipes that are causing unsafe drinking water in a number of schools. earlier this week, the city announced the water fountains in six schools were turned off because of high levels of lead. superintendent tommy chang says they will start flushing the fota they're safe for the start of the school year. emily: commitment 2016, donald trump's running mate mike pence will be in new hampshire today. he'll speak at an event in manchester this afternoon, while trump heads to north carolina. yesterday the republican nominee got his first classified national security briefing. he then held a national security roundtable at trump tower. democrat rival hillary clinton is expected to hold a fundraiser in montana today. she spent much of yesterday in

cleveland, and met with students. in the right place at the right time. a probation officer credited with saving a baby's life. randy: the disturbing conditions where she says she found the newborn. plus, a cemetery mix-up in rhode island. the mistake that's pitting two grieving families against each other. erika? erika: staying on top of that breaking news in rio. two american swimmers will be ld they were robbed. the pair was pulled off their plane as they tried to fly home last night. authorities want to question them about the alleged robbery saying their stories don't add up. we'll bring you new details as we get them. cindy? cindy: a few clouds around this morning and an area of showers to the south.

emily: right now, a woman is under investigation accused of leaving her newborn child alone in a sweltering home. and this morning we're hearing from the probation officer credited with saving that baby. julie hall has been making regular visits to the barnstable home after allegations of abuse or neglect. but she made an unannounced stop last month and that's when she heard the weeks-old baby crying inside. hall says nobody else was home. she pushed an air conditioner through the window and found the baby in disturbing condition sweating, and soaked with urine. >> picked him up, consoled him, then after i realized he was ok, he was very hot and there was no air. emily: the boy is recovering in foster care as police investigate. randy: a faster fix for the commuter rail. the high-tech approach to help keep trains on the tracks.

clouds around, wind from the west at three miles per hour. light wind, clear skies, cooler thanks to the lower dewpoint temperature. it is still fairly pleasant, but you can see that high humidity to the south near the frontal boundary and along that front. the bulk of this rain is staying to the south of the northern edge bringing a few showers to western parts of connecticut with the rain moving into the hartford area. a lot of this will dry up as it shifts eastward, but if you look south of the pike there is also some in southeastern massachusetts. a lot of that moisture is drying up and pivoting to the south, but if you are down this way, a good idea to have an umbrella

sun and clouds their much of the day, right now at 64 in worcester, upper 50's with less cloud cover, beverly at 62 and lower 60's this morning. we jump up to around 70 degrees pretty quickly, and by lunch time it is already in the lower 80's. temperatures could sneak in the upper 80's to around 90 in the merrimack valley and with a southwestey cape cod. we get into the afternoon with another front to the north working down. a new band of cloud cover starts to develop after lunchtime. the showers are really focused across central and northern new england. by the time it gets down here, this limited moisture associated with it. a low risk of a spot or evening shower, most drive through the evening.

dry, kickoff temperature at 8:00 p.m. we'll fall back into the 60's overnight, and we get into the day tomorrow with that front to the south. we are setting up for a really nice looking weekend, friday, saturday, sunday, should be dry, and as we go through the weekend, it will be a little bit cooler. we will be near 80 degrees over the interior, low to we go through that weekend and then late sunday into sunday night we have the best chance of seeing some showers as the humidity comes up. but monday will be one of those days when we have downpours and hopefully because we need it. olessa: quiet start on the roads. this is eastbound on allston brighton, but west of here there is a problem on the pike.

tractor-trailers colliding, all happening by bankrupt street. it is still an active scene and they only have one lane open. westbound is not too bad but there might be some stop and stare delays. 128 construction clearing and then again by roche 3 but so far you are in great shape, 24, 95, all start on schedule. randy: a cemetery mix-up in rhode island pitting two families against each other. lewis chadwick died in october after a battle with cancer and was buried at pocasset hill cemetery in tiverton. but his family recently learned it was the wrong plot. his plot belongs to the family of raymond murray who's buried just steps away. the chadwicks just want to swap deeds. but the murray family wants the

>> i am pleading with them, what sense does this make? i just want my husband left alone. randy: the town administrator says he's sympathetic but bound legally by the initial contracts for the plots. the exhumation is scheduled for next thursday. the murrays haven't commented. emily: the mbta's embattled commuter rail operator is using newer technology to fix trains. keolis plans to use virtual reality goggles to speed up mana starting next month, workers will use the special glasses from a cambridge-based startup to transmit images to expert technicians. they'll be on the tracks virtually to help solve the problem. instead of sending someone out to the train. randy: your economy this thursday, asian markets rise overnight following signals that the u.s. federal reserve is in no rush to raise interest rates. right now, stock futures here are mixed. investors eyeing the weekly jobless claims report due out today.

-- mcdonald's plan to promote fitness in happy meals is backfiring. these fitness trackers for kids are now recalled. mcdonald's says it started getting reports that the trackers meant to get kids moving were causing skin irritation. they're offering an alternate toy while they figure out what's causing the problem. emily: to the olympics in rio where the u.s. makes history again. a clean sweep in the 100-meter hurdles. brianna rollins took gold with 12.4-8 seconds. she was closely followed by fellow americans nia ali and kristi castlin. that's the first time the u.s. has swept the olympic podium for the race. and american volleyball players kerri walsh jennings and april ross recover from a tough loss. they took the bronze medal in beach volleyball against brazil yesterday. the win came less than 24 hours after walsh jennings lost her first olympic match, over 4 summer games. randy: trending stories, target

its stores after feedback on its new bathroom policy. in april, target announced that transgender people could use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity. the company says it has heard from customers who approve of the move, and those who do not. they're adding singe-stall bathrooms to make sure all guests are comfortable. emily: a 100-year-old north reading woman celebrates her birthday by getting her high school diploma. more than 80 years ago during the great depression to support her family. yesterday loved ones surprised her with an honorary high school diploma from the superintendent. she even got a cap and gown. picciuto says even though she left school, she never stopped learning. randy: a close encounter in canada. kayakers were treated to a rare greeting from some humpback whales. a mother humpback and her calf breached the surface near read island. about a dozen kayakers were on a five-day expedition.

randy: breaking news in your early news to go. emily: two american olympic swimmers are detained in brazil over allegations they were robbed in rio. overnight we learned that jack conger and gunnar bentz will not be allowed to leave until they provide testimony about the alleged crime. investigators say they've found little evidence to support their claims they were robbed at gunpoint on sunday.

flight home last night. teammate ryan lochte made it back to the u.s. before he could be detained. randy: convicted murderer james whitey bulger is appealing to the supreme court for a new trial. bulger says he didn't get a fair trial three years ago because he wasn't allowed to enter his main argument, that he was granted immunity when he was an fbi informant. in march, a three judge panel ruled bulger's trial was fair. the 86-year-old is currently serving a life sentence in federal prison. emily: police are searching for the suspect in a deadly stabbing in east boston. the victim is a man in his twenties. he was found inside a house on paris street just before 7 yesterday morning. boston police are asking anyone with information to contact them. randy: a deadly crash between an suv and a bicyclist is under investigation in lincoln. police say a 59-year-old westford man was killed in yesterday's crash on virginia road. the driver did stay at the scene. investigators are still deciding if that driver will face

emily: homeland security secretary jeh johnson will visit louisiana today amid widespread flooding. he will review the government's response to the disaster that's led to 13 deaths and more than 30,000 rescues. in the baton rouge area, some 40,000 homes are severely damaged. state officials say it will take more than a billion dollars to recover. randy: a wildfire in the hills of san bernardino, california has grown to nearly fifty square miles. fueling them. 82,000 people are under evacuation orders and several buildings and homes have burned. today governor charlie baker is expected to address the widespread drought in massachusetts. he'll join state and federal leaders to outline a plan to help residents and farmers during the prolonged drought conditions. right now, more than 60% of the state is under severe drought.

the game was called in the 7th because of rain. but not before jackie bradley junior helped put a beating on the orioles. he drove in four of the sox 8 runs last night, before the game was put on a delay. the umpires eventually called it. sox win 8-1 they head to detroit for an afternoon matchup today. randy: some changes could be coming to fenway. red sox owners are eyeing a 4 million dollar expansion plan for the beloved park. that would include more dugout area seats for fans, new suites, and a removable ll wall so the park can adjust for regulation college football and fifa games. the plans are still in the very early stages. emily: practice is paying off for president obama. he hit the golf course yesterday on martha's vineyard taking a couple of practice shots. but after a few swings he let one rip, and was apparently very happy with it, we, of course, can't see where the ball actually went. the first family will wrap up

[laughter] cindy: there you go. in the tropics, we have had a season that got it started quietly, but we have a new traffic system out there in the atlantic, and it's our sixth mean tropical systems of our this season. this is the coast of africa. wind comes up to 40 miles per hour and he continues to the west-northwest. given that pays, it is forecast to lift in our direction. five days out, this is bermuda and the eastern seaboard. we will continue to monitor it for you, but it is certainly no threat to land here at the moment. we're watching an area of low pressure to the south. this friends down here came

wind, and brought in lower humidity. high clouds off this area of rain all the way to beyond boston. there is also a front to the north. this area of low pressure will pass through south of the pike, and as the sun drops in, it might produce one or two isolated showers or storms late in the day. we will have sun and clouds, mid 80's in boston, some warmth to be had in d.c. you can see up to the north and west, this goes well through the upcoming weekend. we will have a nice stretch of dry weather expected for friday, saturday, and sunday. temperatures coming up tomorrow. this will be a scene that repeats, right along the coastline, 80 degrees over the interior, upper 80's of lower humidity, sunshine mixed in with clients.
