shooting under investigation in roxbury. a man and a woman were shot around midnight at upton's corner. the man was killed. the woman, in her 30s, is in critical condition at boston medical center. they're looking for the shooter. >> we do have an individual flee dudley terrace on to dudley in the direction of columbia road. that's all we have at this time. doug: police say they know little more about the crime. they urge anybody with information to call the homicide unit. you can leave an anonymous tip at the number you see at the bottomf antoinette: a teenager is behind bars in connection with a deadly stabbing in east boston. police arrested 18-year-old darius berry of dorchester last night, accused of stabbing 23-year-old gage smith to death. smith was found inside a paris street home on wednesday. right now, a suspect is under arrest after a stabbing outside a popular woburn restaurant. doug: the victim of the attack is in critical condition, but as newscenter 5's dianne cho reports, the motive for the

reporter: less than 24 hours after the stabbing, woburn police announce an arrest in what they call a brutal attack outside this jake and joe's restaurant. >> there is no clear indication of motive and the investigation continues to be active and ongoing. reporter: it happened just after midnight this morning as the restaurant was closing. >> anybody that was there last night that could get close enough, there was a considerable crime scene murder. the police chief says the suspect was arrested at a home in woburn, adding social media, good old fashioned police work helped investigators track the suspect down. >> facebook played a big part in it. we're not in a position to talk about it. reporter: the director of operations for the restaurant says nothing like this has ever happened here before. >> we pride ourselves on being a family oriented business. reporter: we're told he's being held on $50,000 bail.

monday. in woburn, diane cho, wcvb, newscenter 5. doug: the state has taken custody of three children as part of the investigation into the death of a toddler in woburn. there have been no charges filed in the death of 15-month-old noah larson. an ambulance was called to the home monday, when noah and his twin sister were in the care of a family friend. we tried to speak to the baby sitter friday. she wouldn't answer questions. investigators haven't labeled her a suspect. antoinette: we're getting our first really happened from one of the american swimmers who claimed to be robbed in rio. swimmer gunnar bentz issuing a statement last night, clarifying what this surveillance video appears to show. he and three teammates, including ryan lochte, urinated outside a store sunday morning and then lochte vandalized a sign on the outside wall of the store. bentz says security arrived and, quote, both guards pointed their guns at us and yelled at us to sit on a nearby sidewalk, but ryan stood up and began to yell

one of the guards said we needed to pay them in order to leave. bentz says they handed over about $70 and then left. lochte issued an apology friday, but offered very few details of what happened. brazilian police continue to investigate and say there could be charges. doug: right now, police in new hampshire searching for a man they say escaped from a halfway house. andrew shea ran tried to take him into custody. he's serving time for two armed robberies. antoinette: a level three sex offender behind bars after exposing himself in malden. 49-year-old kevin scrib ner was arrested thursday. police say three women reported being assaulted by scribner. he has a lengthy record, dating back to 1994. he is being held until a dangerousness hearing next week.

you got the older man and the younger man. police say it's 31-year-old shawn miller of hyannis. he's been wanted since april on drug charges when police showed up at a home in south yarmouth, where they thought he might be. a man appearing to be much older walked out the door. police weren't fooled. they pulled off the disguise and this is a picture of the mask and then police served the home and found two loaded weapons and $30,000 in cash. antoinette: the driver accused of hitting three people in downtown crossing has pleaded not guilty yesterday in court. shaniqua steel says the car she was driving suddenly accelerated and may have had a mechanical problem. her lawyer also says she was not running away from the scene but into a nearby building where her husband was. steel does not have a license. t police looking for your help finding this man wanted in an assault on a bus driver. he's accused of chugging a beer before punching that driver in the face.

and brighton ave. when this happened, we're told by the mbta that the driver refused medical treatment. call police if you recognize the suspect. doug: new this morning, an alleged hazing incident in chelmsford is headed to federal court. a lawsuit in connection with the 2013 incident is expected to be filed within the next couple days. the incident happened at a preseason football camp. the hazing allegations include physical and sexual assault along with bullying and harassment. our media partners at the lowell sun report the family is seeking $300,000 in damages from the town. right now, police in manchester looking for an animal after it attacked at least two people. witnesses say it's a grey fox and now we're hearing from the woman who was bit by it. jane worthy was out for a walk with her dog when the animal came charging around the corner after her at her merrimack home. she ran to the front door but the animal chased and attacked her. she used a broom to swing at it.

your health this morning, a new study revealing parents want the chance to opt out of the controversial hpv vaccine. 60% of parents say they think the vaccine is ineffective. more than 30% think the major push for the vaccine is to give money for the pharmaceutical companies. the cdc and doctors, however, do recommend all children get that vaccine. they say it does work to prevent very serious cancers. a new zika travel warning for one of the most famous vacation destinations here in tni doug: ben simoneau has the warning for pregnant women in miami beach. reporter: a tourist hot spot, now a zika hot spot. >> if i knew, i wouldn't have come here. reporter: florida health officials confirming five people contracted zika while in miami beach. somewhere between 8th and 28th streets, a 1.5 square mile area. it's now the second neighborhood where zika is being spread.

we'll do everything we can to help pregnant women across the state. we have a safe state and we'll keep it that way. reporter: the problem, 15 million tourists a year come to miami beach. three of the new zika cases were out of state visitors. from new york, texas and taiwan. >> between our efforts and the county's spraying efforts, the last thing i'd ever want to be on miami beach right now is a mosquito, okay? reporter: eradication will have to be through ground spraying, because high winds and tall buildings make aerial spraying difficult. the state hasn't said exactly when it believes the victims contracted zika. putting governor rick scott on the defensive. >> a straight-up answer. we're going to provide timely, accurate information for public health. i want everybody in the state to stay safe.

12 hours or so. kind of losing some of its punch. the national hurricane center is saying probably later this afternoon, it will stop being a tropical storm, become a tropical depression. it just is not holding together very well. we're seeing mo iing maximum su winds of 40 miles an hour. it moves from the west/northwest at 13 miles per hour. as it moves toward bermuda, it falls apart. rains, gusty breezes as we talk about wednesday, i wyche it would move closer to the coast. we don't want a tropical system, but sometimes leftover tropical systems have nice rains. they hang around for a little bit. the other area we're watching, this area here. it doesn't have a name. it's disorganized, but we may see something developing. we call it invest 99. it's the 99th storm we're keeping an eye on. we put the computer models

because they go all over the place. this time, everything is saying it's going to head to puerto rico and possibly over the coast of florida. the timing of this will put it in the florida area if it did happen. probably like a week from monday. i do have computer models that say yes, this thing could spin up into a hurricane and impact the southern parts of florida. but, again, that is a week from monday, a long way into the distance. closer to home,ib worcester. it was down to a quarter mile for a while. we're going to continue to see the visibility increasing as the sun burns off the fog out there. there's absolutely nothing to talk about except that one spot right there. kind of floating around block island but not even giving any rain to block island. now it's pretty much pushed offshore. not going to see too much out of that one. rain makers to the west. that's a thousand miles away.

five former employees of wahlburgers in brooklyn are suing the restaurant for rampant violations of labor laws. in this class action lawsuit filed in new york federal court, ex-employees say wahlburgers failed to pay them the proper minimum wage and regularly kept tips designated for the servers. the company says it's working with the brooklyn franchise to better understand the circumstances. doug: the boston harbor casino has an opening day. resort executives plan to open the casino in june of 2019. construction began on the everett location earlier this month after years of legal fights. the construction of the $2 billion complex also includes the cleanup of the mystic river. major crackdown on robo calls. companies like apple, google and comcast are among dozens participating in a robo call strike force meeting. the group is working to provide customers more control over incoming calls. they're working on a solution to

he was wearing a mask, making him look much older, when arrested. antoinette: a student pilot survives after being forced to crash land his plane in littleton. doug: police praising his ability to stay calm under pressure. newscenter 5's john atwater spoke with his family. reporter: the single engine cessna sustained serious damage when it crashed into the woods. people witnessing it assumed the worse. >> i was working in the house. i saw a plane at about eye level and saw it crash into reporter: greg palmer ran over to help the pilot. to his amazement, 18-year-old jim magee had freed himself. that's him carrying a water bottle, showing no signs of serious injury. >> his engine cut out. he didn't know why. he was looking for a safe place to land. that was his best option. reporter: the student pilot lost all power flying alone at 2,000 feet.

his father rushed to the woods, relieved his son survived the terrifying crash. police are praising his skill, impressed he was able to pull off a dramatic crash landing. >> kept himself safe. so he walked away. everyone's happy. antoinette: that was john atwater reporting. police and the faa continue to investigate to figure out exactly what went wrong. doug: well, we're hearing the disturbing calls for help made after ara brother while vacationing in florida. 16-year-old gus ramgren is charged attempted murder, accused of stabbing his mother, melissa. and his 14-year-old brother wednesday night. she made the first call for help. the second call came in from a neighbor when that teenaged suspect showed up on her front porch. >> what exactly did he say to

they did it. who's they? he's not saying. >> the mother and her son are in the hospital. the 16-year-old is being held without bond. antoinette: the salem woman who spent five years in jail for with holding medication from her cancer stricken son will appear in court. kristin labrie may change her plea from not guilty. she's awaiting a new trial after her conviction was turned over by the state's highest court. the court ruled her lawyers did not provide an adequate defense. labrie is charged with attempted murder. she's scheduled to appear in court on august 31. doug: commitment 2016. donald trump tours the flood ravaged areas of louisiana. the republican presidential nominee met with residents after devastate willing floods left at least 13 people dead and thousands displaced. president obama announced late friday he'll visit louisiana next week. after touring the flood zone, trump headed to

have suffered under democratic control. to those i say the following. what do you have to lose? doug: trump boasted after few years of a trump presidency, he'd get 95% of the black vote. antoinette: we are learning who gave hillary clinton the idea to use a private email account when she was secretary of state. the "new york times" reporting that clinton told the fbi it was former secretary of state colin powell who gave her that idea. clinton a memo detailing his use of personal email and how it made communications quicker, but powell did not use a private email server, as clinton did. a federal judge ruling that clinton must provide written answers in that email lawsuit. she will answer questions from the group judicial watch. the group wanted clinton to testify under oath as part of a freedom of information act lawsuit against the state department.

clinton will then have 30 days to answer them. doug: looking at a problem found right under our feet. tens of thousands of natural underground gas leaks and you're paying for them. kathy curran shows us where they are and the threat they could pose. >> we're hitting a tipping point. everything is beginning to kroed, leak at the same time. reporter: boston university researcher margaret hen drick is standing on top of the kind of problem she's been studying, a gas leak in sullivan square that is likely killing plants and trees. >> we call them super emitters because they disproportionately contribute to the methane emissions we see from natural gas leaks. reporter: a few miles away, at

along the freedom trail sits a narrow pipe shooting more than 20 feet into the sky. it's releasing and dispersing natural gas leaking from the 100-year-old cracked pipe below. it's just one of the more than 70,000 gas leaks reported as of the end of last year. >> you could have an accident and an ignition of gas. reporter: the leaks come at a huge financial cost. the state can't say how pairs across the country paid at least $20 billion during an 11-year period for all of the leaking gas. >> i heard kaboom. reporter: an explosion in 2014 rocked in dorchester neighborhood and injured a dozen people. leaking gas is always a public safety concern, but

by the methane being released. this grass roots group brought their message to cambridge city hall. >> they are the largest single contributor to greenhouse gases. the rate payers for the utilities are paying for them. >> it's going to take time. we're doing it aggressively. reporter: tom kiley heads up the trade association, representing gas companies like national grid. >> do you think the companies co >> if you take national grid in the past five or six years, they've spent about $875 million on replacing leak prone pipe. >> if you're going to be guardians of it, do what you're supposed to do and make sure the product is contained and that the people around it are always going to be safe. reporter: a law passed earlier this month requires gas companies to include leaks like the so-called super emitters on the repair plans that they have

antoinette: five on the opioid crisis. ground breaking new tools to end drug addiction being tested in massachusetts. i got a chance to check it out at umass medical school in worcester. it's the latest technology in the fight against the opioid crisis. a device worn on the wrist. >> someone who's using cocaine has kind of a more jittery, very disorganized movement in their arms. antoinette: body movements associated with drug use the hope is to recognize patterns of drug use that lead to an addiction and, in many cases, to an overdose. >> one of the things we want to figure out is how we can predict when somebody who is in treatment, for example, is going to start craving their drug and whether or not we can create an intervention that in realtime prevents them from using. reporter: dr. peter chai is on the team researching the monitors. 20 people are taking part in the study. also in the works at umass

doug: it's been quiet around here, but i get a feeling we're starting to approach hurricane season. mike: this is when we start to peak. you know the ocean. it's going to warm up dramatically. remember 25 years ago, you were down at the cape. doug: hurricane bob did some damage too. no joke. mike: it was a category 3 storm. the storms clip and make a beeline at us. it was a category 3 and dropped to a category 2 as it moved inland. there's the path it followed. kind of running its way across narragansett bay and pushing through the south shore. very quick storm system that we're talking about. brewster, 125-mile-an-hour wind gusts. the left side of the storm is where you get heavy rain. though it was quick, look at the rainfalls we're talking about,

rain as it moved through rapidly. sometimes a tropical system is good for you. a lot of places look forward to seeing them, not in the hurricane status but in the sense they have a lot of moisture and give much-needed rain at times. we don't have anything like that in our forecast. we have to wait for showers and thunderstorms from the west. we've got an eye on fiona right now, but fiona is ding away. it is a tropical store. this afternoon, it becomes a tropical depression. this is one worth organized. when you put the computer models, tracking over the next several days, you see what's happening. it starts to aim towards puerto rico and southern florida. i have one fairly reliable computer model saying this could be a hurricane for southern florida. that would not happen until a week or more from monday. so it's a long way out, obviously a lot of things can happen. i wouldn't be putting it in the bank right now. it does make us keep an eye on what's happening in the tropics

can happen. as i mentioned, we need rain. moisture would be great. boston and worcester both checking in over eight inches dry for the year. look at this area, extreme drought. this is almost like what we were talking about, say, in southern california. this is extreme stuff we're talking about. very dry. be careful with open flames over the next couple days until we get rain in here. the only rain we've seen this morning, towards block island. this kind of started off on the eastern side and then kind of slid underneath of it. basically, mis everyone needs rain. it would be nice if we had scattered showers coming out of it. no lightning detected. off to the west, our next chance for rain comes in tomorrow night. late tomorrow night. so most of your sunday is absolutely fine. i would keep all of your plans in place. do remember tomorrow night, probably after midnight, some of the showers and thunderstorms could be moving their way in. for today, 72 degrees. the dew point is relatively manageable at 63 degrees.

coming up tomorrow. notice a couple things tomorrow. more clouds, more humidity, and a chance for rain. that rain chance will come in here looks like late. let me give you an hour by hour breakdown. 3:00 in the afternoon, not much going on. it's about 9:00, 10:00, we start to see showers and thunderstorms off to the west. probably not arriving into boston until late sunday night, early monday morning. monday morning, early morning commuters may run into scattered showers. late in the day monday, humidity star t tuesday and wednesday, low humidity and sunshine. those two days look fantastic. it warms up with more muggy conditions towards thursday and from friday. doug: the nba moving the all-star game out of north carolina after they refused to ban a law allowing discrimination against transgender people. it takes place february 2019 at smoothie king center which has hosted the game three times.

antoinette: we continue to follow breaking news this morning out of boston. police searching for a suspect in a kedly shooting at upham's corner on the roxbury dorchester line. this happened near wendover and dudley streets. a man and woman were shot. the n in her 30s, is in critical condition at boston medical center. doug: a suspect is under arrest in connection with a violent stabbing in woburn. 36-year-old james lyons faces charges with assault with attempt to murder. the victim is in critical condition after the stabbing outside of jake and joe's early friday morning. antoinette: the state has taken custody of three children as part of the investigation into the death of a toddler in woburn. there have been no charges filed in the death of 15-month-old

twin sister were in the care of a family friend. investigators have not labeled the baby-sitter as a suspect. doug: residents in california getting a firsthand look at devastation caused by a fast moving wildfire. it's now 40% contained. thousands were forced to evacuate as the flames erupted 60 miles east of los angeles. at least 96 homes and 213 buildings were destroyed. firefighters say they are making advances. plans are under way right now to cut back on the nearly 1,600 firefighters battling the fire. tony bennett day in san francisco. the festivities honoring bennett included a heaping amount of praise. an eight-foot tall bronze statue was unveiled outside the fairmont hotel. the giants honoring him, complete with a performance from the birthday man himself.

doug: who doesn't love a love story, right? it's been growing since they were kids. like five years ago. raven and evan met in this very room five years ago, when they attended the boys and girls club. now it's their own little wedding chapel. they initially wanted a simple wedding ceremony at the town hall, but the community that adored them really wanted to make this more special. so they gathered up in the town of milford and put this surprise together in a matter of days. after evan returned from boot camp. we wish the happiness. antoinette: 12 and 13 when they met. you don't need the big fancy wedding. that one means something. mike: to my two daughters, i want to emphasize that as well. doug: it's wonderful. mike: weather today is not too bad. we've got plenty of sunshine, cooler inland -- at the coast. inland, more clouds this afternoon. tomorrow, partly cloudy and rain tomorrow night. each computer model run i see
