diane: we have not had a lot of rainfall coming down in boston, but something else has -- trees. arborists blame the drought for weakening trees' roots and branches. newscenter 5's david bienick tonight on what you can do to avoid trouble in your backyard. david crews sawed up and hauled : away what's left of this huge oak tree that came down in wellesley with a crash. >> and of course, there was no wind, no electrical storm, no anything it was as still as could be. david a few days earlier in : reading, a tree fell on a house. and in salem, new hampshire, this falling tree just missed hitting a woman in her car. >> you can see these branches right here are so brittle, they just nap right off. david arborist rolf briggs says : not just this summer, but rather four years of dry weather have been starving trees and making them vulnerable to insects and disease. >> and we are going to see a lot of insects and diseases this year we have not seen in many,

: recent forest survey shows since last year the number of acres of damaged trees has more than tripled, mainly because of gypsy moths. briggs says among backyard trees, worry most about vulnerable species like sugar maples, beeches, and birches. he says more drought tolerant are elms, locusts, and london planetrees. to protect trees, briggs says bring a half inch of water, not just to the trunk of the tree, far out -- is the edge of the leaf canopy. and how often? >> three times a week. if it is 90 degrees like it was, four times a week. david briggs says don't waste : water on grass. even if it's yellow and brown, it will bounce back. but for trees, the breaking point may be closer than you think. in wellesley, david bienick, wcvb newscenter 5. ben: a teacher arrested for inappropriate contact with a student. police in gardner say it happened at narragansett

that is where newscenter five's juli mcdonald is live with what we know now. juli. juli: part of the investigation involved an interview with a student with whom he had a relationship after she graduated. the interview with them, led police to believe that he had inappropriate conduct with a current student during this past school year. earlier this morning, templeton and worcester police executed a search warrant of the 33-year-old teacher's home. we spoke with narragansett graduates who were really stunned, describing kacavich as a well-liked staff member, and a lot of students' favorite teacher. >> there was a big group of kids that would sit in there with him and eat lunch every day.

gansett, it's very unsettling to think one of the teachers was like that, especially sending my kids there eventually someday -- someday. nicole: if posted bail, he must wear a gps monitor and stay away from the witness in the investigation. this case heads back to court on september 16. live in table in, julie macdonald, wcvb newscenter 5. di commitment 2016 tonight -- donald trump now has an hispanic advisory board. the republican presidential candidate met for the first time with that board today in new york. he's trying to change his image with hispanic voters, who have largely been turned off by his comments. when he announced his candidacy last year, trump accused mexico of sending criminals and rapists illegally across the u.s. border. he's also threatened to deport all 11 million illegal immigrants. ben: hillary clinton meantime is on nantucket tonight. she arrived there this morning, for a fundraiser at the home of the former ambassador to portugal.

tomorrow, for a fundraiser with cher in provincetown. diane: on the second anniversary of boston's my brother's keeper initiative the city is announcing a new grant program. ben: mayor marty walsh announcing the $100,000 grant today. non-profits across boston can apply for the money to support programs for young people of color. walsh says grant will help expand the city's commitment to closing the achievement gap. mayor walsh: we need to make sure we have programs, but they have to be substantial proam and they can't be just talk. when we have our kids going through school, when the graduate, we have to put them on a path to something. we need to ensure our youth successfully enters the work force, we need to reduce violence and promote second chances. ben: the mayor, also sharing a progress report for my brother's keeper. walsh says findings show a need a need to coordinate programs across the city. supporting one of their own. firefighters and the community hit the pavement in salem this morning for the third annual 5-k for army veteran kevin o'boyle. the decorated vet and late salem firefighter died 3 years ago,

>> you are watching newscenter five at 6:00. ben: firefighters from new england are heading out to west to help fight wildfires. a group left manchester, new hampshire today, part of a contingent that include firefighters from cape cod. the firefighters will be assigned to help fight the more than 31 fires in 10 states including california, where thousands of people have been evacuated. red cross volunteers from new england are also heading to louisiana to help people dealing with the deadly flooding. the rain has stopped but the water is so high many people cannot get back to their homes -- at least 13 people died. tens of thousands left homeless. diane: this is an incredible story from florida. a toddler pulled from the wreckage of a boat, surviving for nearly an hour in an air pocket. the boat flipped over during what was supposed to be a quick trip home. abc's mark remillard has more with the harrowing 911 call. >> 911, what is your emergency?

friday, police received a call from a mother in distress. >> you say your boat has completely capsized? it is upside down? mark: everyone was thrown overboard. >> i had charlotte in my hand. the boat slipped. i climbed on top of the boat. brian and sharon pulled me up. and we heard mark: they pulled nearly everyone to safety, except kennedy. >> the mom and dad did everything they could. they were looking under the boat and dad was sitting on the bottom of the boat with the baby. mark: after nearly an hour of searching, responders found her and pulled her from the water. >> god was with us.

the upper 70's. the dew point, 76. everywhere else looking at dew points in the 60's. showers across connecticut, springfield. worcester, dark, ominous clouds. most of those have faded away. the only thunderstorm activity we see is across the west, and those will dry up as the sun goes down. the more substantial rainfall is associated with this across the ohio valley. lots of humid air ahead of it, the drier air working in, a very in band. though we may pick up half an end, three quarters of an inch, it will barely put a tent in the jot we are experiencing. upper 60's to near 70 degrees. the drier air is on the way. it looks like overnight it will be a touch of fall.

tonight against detroit's daniel norris. however last night it was the rick porcello show once again he -- once again. he goes 7 strong innings only giving up 4 hits walked 2 and struck out eight. it was a year ago many wanted him gone but this year he is a legit contender to win the al cy young award and his numbers this season back it up. and in his last 7 starts porcello has been pretty close to shut down as you can get having a 6 and 1 record,having an incredible 2.25 e.r.a. over 52 innings. in case you missed it -- last night blue jays leading the indians 2 to 1 in the ninth with one out. jose ramirez takes jays closer roberto osuna deep to tie the game. the very next batter centerfielder tyler nayquin hits this ball deep to write. hits just below the top of the wall and bounces away from michael saunders and nayquin would fly around the bases for the rare inside the park walk
