out trees suddenly crashing to the ground. >> we do have a little rain this weekend, when it could hit and what comes after that. >> teacher charged, an accusation and how a local school is responding. >> amazing rescue, a toddler trapped under a flipped boat the air pocket that saved her life. >> heading west, new england firefighter ready to take on a wall of flames. we're following breaking ne two children pulled from a pool. good evening. anchor: both children rushed to the hospital. julie is in lowell with what we know. reporter: diana and ben, there is still a police presence here at this freda lane home in lowell. neighbors tell three was some sort of party at this house this afternoon and this evening, with family and friends. pa party ending with a 911 call. emergency responders rushed to this home for two children who

a neighbor who is a registered nurse ran from his yard and began performing c.p.r. on the little girl after she was pulled from the water. he says there was also a young boy who needed urgent attention. police did confirm to newscenter 5 that these two children are both preschool aged and they were flown by medical helicopter to boston hospitals. one child was unresponsive when pulled from the pool, and police were still waiting for an update on that second can see, investigators have still been coming and going from this property. there is yellow police tape in the back yard around the pool, and also a bounce house that's in the back yard. we've been watching investigators take photos and talk to the people who live in the home. we're on freda lane in lowell, we know that two children were pulled from an above ground pool here. and flown by medical helicopter to boston hospital. stay with with newscenter 5 as we learn more about what

julie mcdonald, newscenter 5. anchor: thank you. also breaking at this hour, wild fires in west roxbury. >> flames burning in an area where dozens of firefighters have been working for hours. nicole? reporter: the past 30 minutes or so, most of those firefighter have now left the scene, just a couple of crews here left to monitor the situation. we can tell you it was four alarms at one point, nec the intensity of the flames but because of the workload. those firefighter having to drag heavy hoses into the woods. dry brush means plenty of fuel, in a fire behind the roxbury latin school saturday. >> extremely difficult to get to, because of course we have no roads and no hydrants where the fire is. report firefighters forced to drag his hoses deep into the woods, a labor intensive feat. >> firefighters have to drag the

over rocks. reporter: the flames knocked down early, but as night fell the efforts to expose the fire continues. >> they have to pull back, you can have dead branches. reporter: just 200 feet from the burning brush a brand new home. >> a little nerve wracking. reporter: they just moved in last month, they returned home saturday night to their house surrounded by red light. >> we were concerned that it was our house here on the end of the street. we could smell the smoke and the fire com reporter: firefighter tell thus is not an area where they typically see brush fires. but with the lack of rain this summer, i doesn't take much. >> there's a lot of fuel for the fire to burn. reporter: no injuries here and no homes were ever in immediate danger. live in west roxbury, newscenter 5. anchor: thank you. there were several other brush fires across the state today, not as big as the one in west roxbury. this one broke out in westwood

there. joe is with me now, with these dry conditions of course things can get out of the hand quickly. >> yes, folks need to be very careful. people like to have barbecues this time of year. you have to be careful because things are extremely dry. we do have extreme drought condition as cross much of the region. boston, worcester, just obviously looking at over 8 inches below normal since the beginning of this year. boston barely getting an inch normal, and you can see right around the interior boston area, metro west from 495 and 128 inward, extending into southeastern new hampshire. i think this week with only a little rain possibly on the way, i think this extreme drought condition area is going to expand, unfortunately. tonight very quiet out there, temperatures generally 60's in worcester, to the lower 70's. a very comfortable. the dew points you can see here 50's and low 60's.

way overnight. dew points in the 60's and 70's to. the west we have a little moisture trying to sneak in. how much of that makes it in here tomorrow? i'll have the details in a few minutes. anchor: thank you. while not a lot rain has been falling in boston this summer, something else has. trees. arborists claim it's weak e ending roots and branches. reporter: what's left of this huge oak tree that came down in wellesley with a crash. >> of course there was no wind, no electrical storm, no anything last night, it was as still as could be. reporter: a few days earlier in reading, a tree fell on a house, and in salem, new hampshire this falling tree just missed hitting a woman in her car. >> you can see these branches right here are so brittle they just snap right off. report he says not just this summer, but rather four years of dry weather have been starving

to insects and disease. >> we're going to see a lot of insects and disease this is year that we haven't seen in many years that are because of the drought. reporter: the most recent survey shows since last year the number of acres of damaged trees has more than tripled, mainly because of gypsy moth. briggs says among back yard trees, worry most about sugar maples, beeches and birches. moreug locust. spray a half inch of water and not just at the trunk of the tree, but twice as far out, twice as far out as the extent of the loaf canopy. how often? >> right now it's over 80 degrees, it's going to be three times a week. if it 90 degrees, it's four times a week. reporter: he says don't waste your water on grass, even if it's yellow and brown, it will bounce back. but for trees, the breaking

think. in wellesley. anchor: the coast guard helping tow in a harbor cruise off the coast of gloucester the cape ann harbor cruise was taking on water this afternoon, the boat turned on the pump and the coast guard put another pump on board to be safe. nobody was hurt. anchor: a teacher from narragansett regional high school is behind bars for inappropriate contact with a student. an interview with a former student led police to kacavich. he faces charges. some narragansett graduates are stunned. >> he seemed like a pretty nice guy. but i guess that's why it comes as such a shock. >> knowing the people at narragansett, very unsettling thinking that one of the teachers was like that. anchor: the superintendent sent a letter to parents which reads in part, there is nothing more

physical safety of our children. kacavich is being held on $2500 bail. anchor: a man killed and a woman injured last night in dorchester, that woman is now expected to recover. mayor walsh and commissioner evans both addressing the shooting today. >> we see that our work is never done. it's never done. i got a text last night at 3:00 in the morning from commissioner evans to tell me that a young person had been killed, again. black male with a blood hoodie seen on dudley terrace taking a left on dudley and heading toward columbia road. we need the public's help. >> not a lot of information about who exactly was responsible last night. they were asking anybody with information to please call them. anchor: a man is behind bars accused in a deadly stabbing in east boston. police arrested 18-year-old darius barry of dorchester last night, he's accused of stabbing

on wednesday. anchor: commitment 2016 tonight, donald trump trying again to reach out to groups of voters he's not doing very well with, including hispanics and african-americans. at a rally in fredericksburg, virginia this evening, trump said the g.o.p. was and still is the party of abraham lincoln and he asked for the african-american vote. he stuck to the script and told the crowd republicans have not done well enough appealing to he says if elected he will win 95% of the african-american vote at the end of his first term. >> i want a totally inclusive country, and i want an inclusive party. hillary clinton is a throwback from yesterday. our campaign is about creating a new american future. anchor: earlier today donald trump convened the first meeting

he's trying to change his image with hispanic voters as well who have been turned off by a comment last year when trump accused mexico of sending criminals and rapists illegally across the u.s. border. he also threatened to deport all 11 million illegal immigrants. hillary clinton meantime is on nantucket tonight. she arrived this morning for a fundraiser at the home of the former ambassador to portugal. she'll head to the cape tomorrow for a fundraiser with cher in provincetown. anchor: a boating try toddler, the boat overturned and the girl was trapped underneath. she was saved by a pocket of air and a life jacket. >> i'm in the river, my boat crashed crashed and i have a baby in the water, please send one now. >> she's got a baby in the water. reporter: deep relief, a toddler trapped under this boat after it capsized in central florida, incredibly found alive. surviving in an air pocket for nearly an hour.

god was with us. reporter: she was on the indian river friday night when her husband and two young daughters, 9-month-old charlotte and 23-month-old kennedy when the boat hit something and flipped. >> we heard kennedy trying and we couldn't find her, we kept searching and searching. reporter: police and passing boaters also searching frantically before finding the toddler in that air pocket, her life jacket keeping her afloat. >> thank you for saving my i can't imagine. anchor: the little girl was taken to the hospital and is listed in good condition. anchor: on the second anniversary of boston's my brother's keeper initiative, the city announcing a new $100,000 grant, to support programs for young people of color. mayor walsh says the grant will help expand the city's commitment to closing the achievement gap. >> with we need to make sure that we have programs, but they have to be substantial programs

mayor levine told reporters there was no outbreak. >> the governor is playing politics with this horrible issue, went out there, gave a press interview, told everyone including the elected leaders that there are five cases. and we hope the governor will stop playing politics, this is a serious issue. anchor: governor scott says he's just making sure the information is accurate. levine is a democrat, scott a republican. levine is rumored to be considering a run for governor there in 2018. anchor: firefighters fight the dozens of wildfires burning out west. 20 new hampshire fighter left today to start their work. reporter: loading up and boarding a plane. for a mission to keep people safe thousands of miles away. >> greatest job in the world. you get to help people, and it's a different aspect.

for boise, idaho, then will be assigned to battle wildfires. over the past few days the new hampshire division of forests and land says 31 lrnl fires have burned more than 400,000 acres across 10 states in the west. >> it's a sense of adventure, we get to go see parts of the country that maybe we wouldn't want to go see. but we get to go see them. and we get to go help people when they need it. reporter: new hampshire is sending a 20-person team, in addition to five other c from the new england area. firefighter will likely be gone for nearly three weeks, working in extreme conditions. >> obviously the urban interface fires where struck sturs are threatened are the highest priority, but we do have some fires on federal land. reporter: they go west year after year, still a rare opportunity for granite staters. >> you think of the population

60 of us that do this. reporter: this trip would be beneficial back home. >> the more people we have that are experienced with how they do things out west, the faster we can get things organized here. reporter: in manchester, new hampshire, mike cronin, wcvb. anchor: so they need the rain out west, we need the rain here badly, but there was some substantial rain to our south, right, they had heavy rain for an hour or so, central connecticut. but as it moved north water, as i'll show you, it dried up. that's because the dew points were lower up this way. today in boston, 86 degrees, so we stayed away from the 90-degree mark, and the average you can see is right around 79, 80 degrees. the next couple of days we'll keep the humidity in here, but of course it's the rainfall we keep talking about. august we haven't even seen an inch in boston and same goes for

normal. hopefully we'll put a dent in this over the next couple days. right now 71 in boston. the dew point 59 degrees, so we're approaching the sticky range, but it was still fairly dry, dry enough to dry up the showers that were to our south in connecticut and new york. so we didn't get much rainfall across central and eastern massachusetts, most of it stayed to our south. but that will change. satellite and radar from the last six hours, very dry. we've had a few showers up across connecticut, that will be sliding northward overnight to help get us more humidity in the air, and that will help fuel some showers later in the day tomorrow and tomorrow night. but it's all dry all the way back to the west. can you see the leading edge of the clouds and showers, that's what will move in about 24 hours from now. we'll see this cold front that is currently sitting from detroit back down through memphis. that's what will bring us a quick quarter to a half inch of

not a huge amount, but anything we can get will help. tonight we have a dry pocket of air, so it's keeping skies mainly clear tonight. i've had a few reports of folks out there, a friend in wareham saying he is still seeing some meteor showers out there tonight. if you are out and about tonight, you might catch a glimpse of one of those. tonight mainly clear, just a few scattered clouds. patchy fog developing by morning. especi as that moisture moves up, temperatures generally in the 60's, very comfortable. and tomorrow you'll notice it in the morning, very muggy. but if -- after dark tomorrow night. falmouth road race tomorrow, 7:00, folks will be gathering around 9:00 when the race starts. 70 to 75, mostly sunny, not
