todd: well, as you might have heard, pokemon go has become the hottest game of the summer, searching for virtual objects hidden in the real world. researchers at mit are working to take that idea a step further bringing the real world into the , game. rhondella: mike wankum shows us
5:54 pm
mike: to win at pokemon go, you try to find pikachu and friends hidden all over the world. lots of fun, but the characters are just there. floating in space. what if the characters were really part of the scene in your phone, meaning that objects in the real world reacted to their presence and movement. abe davis, a 28-year-old researcher at mit, is making that happen. >> we've developed algorithms that are good at recovering motion that we can't see. motions that are so small you and i mike: everything has vibration. whether it's the grass in the background, this sign or even a building. here at mit they are studying those tiny vibrations and by doing that, they are trying to bring the real world into the virtual world. here's how it works. as abe pounds his fist on the table, look carefully and you might be able to see the wire
5:55 pm
that motion, tell you about the object itself? mike: he takes just a few seconds of video, capturing the motion loads it into his interactive dynamic video program and those , algorithms we mentioned show us how the figure behaves if you grabbed an elbow or pushed or prodded it in a variety of ways. >> because different objects prefer to vibrate at different frequencies and shapes you can , learn from that information and tell you a lot about how the object would respond to new forces. possibilities? better interaction with gaming better engineering of bridges , and buildings and hollywood is , already taking notice. the system could create more life-like special effects for a lot less money. abe's youtube video of the process got hundreds of thousands of views in just 3 weeks. >> since then i've gotten a lot emails. i have a neck shall he gone through all of them, but people seem to be interested.
5:56 pm
yeah, this is why i spent all that time. this is cool. mike: abe and his 2 other team members along with mit already have 6 patents on their work. what you are seeing in a research lab today will likely soon show up on your smartphone or the big screen. it took me a while to understand what he was doing. it's very complex. todd: and he is using stick figures as opposed to actual people? mike: oh, he can do anything. todd: you didn't want to showac lot about this guy. and the weather -- there will be a little vibrating. but tomorrow, breezy, sunshine, low humidity. you will like it. but if you want an even better day, tuesday. cool in the morning, sunny in the afternoon, beautiful sunshine. next chance for rain, not until friday. todd: tuesday, wednesday.
