emily: good morning, it's wednesday, august 24. i'm emily riemer. randy: i'm randy price. we're following breaking news on the eyeopener right now, a deadly earthquake hits italy. the damage this morning and the new details in overnight. amalie go an emergency landing is under investigation in central massachusetts. why the pilot could be slapped with a fine. randy: a body camera program begins in boston. the effort launching today for some officers. emily: at first we want to check in with cindy for a look at the forecast. another cool start. cindy: cool and comfortable. 66 degrees in boston, skies are clear. another nice weather day overall. 50's showing up in the suburbs, fitchburg at 59, 54 in orange.

the quake struck as residents were fast asleep around 3:30am in italy. buildings hundreds of-years-old just completely crumbled. ceilings caving in on top of people. the mayor of amatrice saying his town isn't anymore. and the response really difficult as navigating the narrow roads is proving to be a challenge for those operating heavy machinery, furiously looking for survivors and victims. >> it's a very mountainous arean it's not easily accessible. it will take a while for rescuers to get there. erika: there's grave concern about what will be uncovered as the area is popular with vacationers in these summer months. the initial shaking, followed by some 39 aftershocks, was felt as far away as rome about 80 miles away. randy: other stories we're following right now, two men are seriously hurt after this crash in wilmington. it happened just after 10 last night on lake street.

no other cars are believed to be involved. emily: federal aviation investigators are trying to figure out how to get a plane out of the quabbin reservoir after an emergency landing. the pilot, from newport, rhode island, says his single-engine plane had mechanical problems mid-air yesterday afternoon. the man landed on a sand bar. the plane was left there overnight in a zone restricted to flying. investigators will meet today and determine if that pilot should be fined. facing a judge today, not for the first time. it's an alarming twist in an attack in the south end. the eyeopener's sera congi is in boston right now with the important clue the suspect left behind. sera: that clue a digital trail from a gps monitoring device. turns out this suspect had been arrested before for attacking an 18-year-old high school senior on her way to school. police say 31-year-old eduardo rodriguez is the man who attacked a woman early monday

claiming to have a knife, he forced her to a nearby playground and sexually assaulted her. rodriguez had just left prison in december after serving eight years for a similar attack. he was allegedly wearing his gps monitor during monday's attack then cut it off. and that's raising some questions. >> it's a little ridiculous to think that they would use out at 1:00 a.m. at it sounds suspicious to me, if i was watching him. sera: police say they're relieved they were able to track rodriguez down so quickly thanks to the gps signal from the park and the victim's description. he'll be arraigned on a long list of charges today. including aggravated rape, kidnapping and indecent assault and batter. live in boston, sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. emily: new this morning, the boston police department will begin a controversial body camera training program today.

the cameras for the two-day training session. it's part of a six-month pilot program that includes 87 male officers and 13 female, 55 of whom are white. the officers were selected after none volunteered and will be paid $500 each. the pilot program is set to begin next month. randy: an investigation is underway right now after a man was hit by a falling tree branch in brookline. he remains in the hospital with serious injuries. it happened in an alley ar commonwealth ave yesterday as a tree company was working in the area. but it's still unclear exactly what caused that branch to fall. the victim is a 29-year-old man who works at the nearby herb chambers car dealership. >> i came down to check it out and there was a guy with the branch on top of him. >> it is someone you see every day, and it's really sad.

his family. emily: this morning former u.s. senator scott brown is firing back at allegations of sexual harassment. he's mentioned in the growing sex scandal involving fox news. it was after this appearance on the show outnumbered last august. host andrea tantaros is claiming in a new lawsuit that brown told her in a suggestive manner she'd quote be fun to go to a nightclub with. she says he snuck up behind her while she was buying lunch and put his hands on her lower >> i have no knowledge of what she's referring to, i have never touched her around her waist. by what i do that? >> she said -- >> i have no knowledge of that. emily: tantaros is not suing brown her lawsuit for nearly 50 million dollars is against fox and some executives and employees. a teenager accused of sexual

emily: no jail time for an east longmeadow teenager accused of sexually assaulting two classmates. and right now, there's a new push to get the judge in that case kicked off the bench. 18-year-old david becker was sentenced to two years probation after admitting to sexually assaulting a woman at a house party in april. he denied any ac both women say they woke up to becker assaulting them. becker was initially charged with two counts of rape but was allowed to plead guilty to a lesser charge, indecent assault and battery. prosecutors pushed for two years in prison, but becker's lawyer argued the teen had no criminal record, and deserved to go to college. nearly 6,000 people have signed an online petition to have the judge in this case removed for handing down a lenient sentence. randy: airline delays caused by

square. we are gathering information and we will have an update in about five st. emily: seriously hurt after falling off scaffolding at harvard medical school. it happened around 2 yesterday afternoon on shattuck street. we're told the worker was a -- an 18-year-old man is free on bail, accused of sexually assaulting a classmate at a prestigious new hampshire boarding school. chukwudi ikpeazu pleaded not guilty last week to charges stemming from the ge improperly handled the case by telling the suspect to deliver bread to the victim as penance. the school is under fire for its handling of several sex assault cases since the 1970's. a former new hampshire pastor is out on bail charged with sexually assaulting a child. steve jesmer turned himself in monday to police in manchester. the 37-year-old is the former pastor at the dialogue church on pine street. according to court documents, he was leading the congregation at the time of the allegations. the alleged victim is under 16-years-old. randy: a $25.6 million
