in the rubble after a huge earthquake. we will get an update in just a moment -- good morning, i'm emily riemer. randy: welcome. beautiful weather. cindy: things are quiet today, skies clear this morning, the sun up until 6:01. we will see loads of sin with worcester now down to 59 degrees, 57 in that for and 52 in keene. south of boston we do have a few 50's showing up and 55 in town. couple patches of fog with visibility down to a few miles but otherwise things are quiet -- another day of high-pressure

by 9:00 this morning, 74 in boston, lunch hour temperatures in the lower 80's and as we go through the afternoon we will get up to 87 before the sea breeze is taken. national and lawrence at 87, humidity still comfortable, and that will lead to rain coming up. randy: now to a breaking commute in sullivan square. the eye's antoinette antonio is there right now. antoinette: what a mess this is out here. it's a nightmare for drivers as this whole area is blocked. if there is any consolation that it happened early. there is a bunch of scrap metal -- that tractor-trailer you see basically flipped over on its

shortly after this happened, when the tractor-trailer crashed. boston police say it looks like the driver took the turn to quickly coming around and tipped over. you can see all of this grant middle swung all over the road. right now it is down to one lane, but traffic coming out of charlestown is completely blocked off and police tell that this could take a couple hours for all this to get cleared out. keep that in mind if you're commute takes you out of the charlestown area or anywhere through sullivan square. let's take a look at how this will impact the rest of your commute with olessa stepanova. olessa: this will be a big headache for commuters, it's open but it is blocked for anyone coming from the charlestown area, so we will

while to clean up the debris so let's get over to the map, all of this happening in sullivan's where so you will want to plan ahead. you are fine on 24 and 95, all that construction in the final stages and again as you travel by route 2. randy: breaking overnight, a deadly earthquake strikes italy. emily: right now rescuers are still digging through debris for survivors and victims. this is happening in the cenal part of the country. the epicenter near the city of amatrice. the eye's erika tarantal is here with the breaking developments. erika: right now all the focus is on those desperate efforts to pull people from the rubble. the scope of the tragedy still really unknown as the death toll has already risen to 21, according to cnn, but that number is expected to go up. the quake struck as residents were fast asleep around 3:30am in italy. buildings hundreds of-years-old just completely crumbled.

the mayor of amatrice saying his town isn't anymore. and the response really difficult as navigating the narrow roads is proving to be a challenge for those operating heavy machinery, furiously looking for survivors and victims. >> is a very mountainous area and the roads aren't easy -- it's not easily accessible area and it won't be easy for rescuers to gethe there's grave concern about what will be uncovered as the area is popular with vacationers in these summer months. the initial shaking, followed by some 39 aftershocks, was felt as far away as rome about 80 miles away. randy: right now, two men are seriously hurt after this crash in wilmington. this is video in overnight. it happened just after 10:00 last night on lake street. police telling newscenter5 the suv slammed into a utility pole. no other cars are believed to be involved. the cause is under investigation.

and not for the first time. it's an alarming twist in an attack in the south end. the eyeopener's sera congi is live in boston with the important clue the suspect left behind. sera: that clue, a digital trail from a gps monitoring device. turns out this suspect had been arrested before for attacking an 18-year-old high school senior on her way to school. police say 31-year-old eduardo rodriguez is the man who attacked a woman at knifepoint early monday morning on claremont street forced her to a assaulted her. rodriguez had just left prison in december after serving eight years for a similar attack. he was allegedly wearing his gps monitor during monday's attack then cut it off. and that's raising some questions. >> that is a little ridiculous -- you'd think he would be seen

sera: police say they're relieved they were able to track rodriguez down so quickly thanks to the gps signal from the park and the victim's description. he'll be arraigned on a long list of charges today. including aggravated rape, kidnapping, and indecent assault and battery. sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. emily: no jail time for an east longmeadow teenager accused of sexually assaulting two classmates. and this morning there's a new push to get the judge in that case kicked off the bench. 18-year-old david becker was sentenced to two years probation after admitting to sexually assaulting a woman at a house party in april. he denied any contact with the other alleged victim. both women say they woke up to becker assaulting them. becker was initially charged with two counts of rape but was allowed to plead guilty to a lesser charge, indecent assault and battery. prosecutors pushed for 2 years in prison, but becker's lawyer argued the teen had no criminal record, and deserved to go to college.

an online petition to have the judge in this case removed for handing down a lenient sentence. randy: new this morning, the growing opioid crisis may be fueling a new problem in massachusetts. and it's pushing dcf to the limit. the herald reports nearly 9500 children are now in foster care. that's a 10% spike just since last year. child advocates say that's due in part to the large number of people addicted to opioids. dcf started tracking the impact of the crisis on children this year but hasn't released a a man has serious injuries after being hit by a tree limb. it happened in an alley near commonwealth ave yesterday as a tree company was working in the area. but it's still unclear exactly what caused that branch to fall. the victim is a 29-year-old man who works at the nearby herb chambers car dealership. herb chambers released a statement last night saying he's praying for the young man and his family. that man's name has not yet been released.

falling off scaffolding at harvard medical school. it happened around 2:00 yesterday on shattuck street. we're told the worker was a bricklayer. and fell about 50 feet landing on a plank below. emily: right now, federal aviation investigators are trying to figure out how to get a plane out of the quabbin reservoir after an emergency landing. the pilot, from newport, rhode island, says his single-engine plane began having mechanical problems mid-air yesterday afternoon. the man landed on a sand bar compliments of this year's drought. the pilot is ok he tells us he was flying an experimental plane he built himself. the plane was left on the sandbar overnight in a zone restricted to flying. investigators will meet today and determine if that pilot should be fined. a guilty plea is expected, from the new hampshire state trooper involved in this violent arrest. andrew monaco will plead guilty to three counts of simple assault on thursday. prosecutors say video from sky5 shows monaco punching a suspect after a police chase between new

a massachusetts state trooper is also charged. randy: a car smashes into this construction sign in the ted williams tunnel. that sign flies into the left lane and almost hits another car. police say the driver who hit the sign yesterday morning is a 60-year-old from lynn. he has minor injuries and will be summoned to court. emily: former senator scott brown, facing sexual harassment claims this mornin accusations, from a fox news channel host. a shocking price hike in your health this morning. how the makers of the epipen are justifying the cost, while giving raises to higher-ups. randy: new this morning, you're getting the kids healthy for school. but what about mom and dad? the warnings for the whole family. erika? erika: breaking overnight, drives may want to avoid sullivan square in charlestown right now. a rolled-over tractor trailer is causing some traffic issues. no word yet on any injuries.

the air is dry with dew points in the 50's, north shore running in the mid 50's, and look at that -- lower 50's around taunton and plymouth, lower 60's on kate todd. high pressure is hanging on, another beautiful day there is more humidity waiting hurry to get here. before any rain will form, the moisture is cooling in terms of the humidity, becoming uncomfortable back toward the chicago area. it does take up by friday, and that will bring in some showers and thunderstorms. nothing the thunderstorms today, and we should sneak into the mid-80's in boston, making a run

end is preparing to face a judge. police say 31-year-old eduardo rodriguez was on probation for another assault when he attacked a woman near claremont street early monday morning. and right now federal investigators are trying to figure out how to get this small pane out of the quabbin reservoir. the pilot says he had to make an emergency landing after having mechanical problems yesterday. randy, emily? randy: new this morning, some boston police officers will make a controversial change today. emily: the eyeopener's doug meehan is live in boston with the training about to get underway. it for months. and today the first boston police officers will start wearing body cameras. officers in five police districts will be strapped with the cameras for the two-day training session. those officers were selected after none volunteered to be part of the training. the union has been fighting the assigning of cameras saying participation must be voluntary. the six-month pilot program includes 87 male officers and 13

they'll be paid $500 each to take part in the program. the full program is set to begin next month. doug meehan, wcvb newscenter 5. randy: new this morning, new numbers show an alarming spike in medical errors in massachusetts. the number of errors in state hospitals jumped 60% according to the globe. much of that is because of an issue at baystate medical center in springfield where 500-75 patients were notified they may have been exposed to infection because of conditions in the hospital's dialysis unit. emily: a strange new twist in a story you saw first on 5. a man is making a new request. , after he was caught on surveillance stealing a signed patriots helmet. we showed you this video on yesterday's eyeopener. a man hops the bar at skipjack's in foxborough, swiping a patriots helmet signed by several players. that day more than a week ago, he called the restaurant to apologize saying he would ship

information comes in. sera: a boston man faces a judge today, for what police call a viscious attack on a woman in the south end. she was first approached near claremont street monday at one am, by 31-year-old eduardo rodriguez. he claimed to have a knife and forced her to walk to a nearby playground where she was sexually assaulted. rodriguez was wearing a gps monitoring device which he cut off, and that's how police were able to identify him along with the victim's description. he had just been released from prison in december for a similar attack on a high school senior. sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. doug: a select number of boston police officers are preparing to hit the streets this morning with a new piece of equipment none of which volunteered to wear. we're talking about body cameras. 100 in all will be wearing the recording device as part of a

chukwudi ikpeazu pleaded not guilty last week to charges stemming from the alleged incident at phillips exeter academy. school leaders admit they improperly handled the case by telling the suspect to deliver bread to the victim as penance. the school is under fire for its handling of several sex assault cases since the 1970's. governor charlie baker is expected to sign a bill today that will offer new protections for animals in massachusetts. the bill would ban owners from leaving a pet locked in a car in extreme weather. break into the cars if an animal is in immediate danger. randy: president obama toured the areas hit hardest by severe flooding in louisiana. the president met with victims yesterday, promising a continued national effort to help rebuild. mr. obama was criticized prior to the trip for waiting more than a week to visit the flood zone. the state's governor had asked the president to hold off so that first responders could

a british woman is dead, two others hurt, after a stabbing at a hostel in australia. police are looking into whether it is an extremist crime after the suspect allegedly hailed allah before stabbing the victims. the man was in australia on a tourist visa. police are not ruling out any motives. emily: take a look at this, police are searching for vandals who left crocodiles at a school in australia. this happened early sunday morning four shirtless men busting into the school office and stealing computers leaving the crocs behind. park rangers were caed randy: the federal government is creating a massive stockpile of cheese. the department of agriculture plans to buy 20 million dollars worth of surplus cheese from suppliers. 11 million pounds will then be donated to food banks and pantries across the country. dairy producers have had difficulty selling cheese since losing overseas buyers amid more milk production in europe. emily: howard johnson's
