emily: good morning, it's thursday, august 25. i'm emily riemer. randy: i'm randy price. breaking news on the eyeopener right now, a teenage girl shot in boston. the new details we're learning from the scene. emily: the death toll skyrockets overnight in italy. the devastation from a powerful earthquake. and the dramatic rescue of a young girl. randy: a hate crime under the explosion targeting a gay-friendly newspaper and the message from the publisher this morning. emily: the first we want to check in with cindy, starting at the day pretty mild. cindy: yeah, is going to warm up, similar to yesterday in terms of temperature. this number right here is the dew point. humidity is going to be climbing today with a southwesterly wind and you will feel the difference by the afternoon.

expressway northbound. 24 looks good, some road work on 128 and the last construction on 128 south. trains and buses starting on schedule. randy: breaking overnight, a teenage girl is seriously hurt after she was shot in boston. emily: details are just coming in at this hour. let's get you right out to the eyeopener's sera congi. she's live at police headquarters with what we know right now. sera: the 15-year-old girl, and according to ems she suffered life-threatening injuries. take a look at the video from the scene from overnight. this happened in your blue hill avenue, the shooting first coming in at 1:00 this morning. when first responders arrived they found her in she was taken to the hospital. police placed cones along the street where there appeared to be showcasing's.

dog, which we are told was also shot. you can see from the scene that the dog has one of its legs wrapped up and was taken away by police. no information on the circumstances of the shooting but we know that a 15-year-old girl is suffering life-threatening injuries. sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. randy: also breaking, the death toll has nearly doubled overnight from a devastating earthquake in central italy. rescuers are still digging for victims. late yesterday a 10-year-old girl was pulled from the rubble. she was alive. her home is in ruins this morning as are many others. erika is here with the overnight developments. erika? erika: a glimmer of hope there in a sea of heartbreak. at this point searchers do think they'll find more survivors like that little girl but the death toll is still expected to go up. in addition to the 247 people killed, another 264 are in the hospital with more missing.

crews continue the painstaking work of moving mounds of rubble, desperate for signs of life. there towns were just leveled by the quake which has been followed by 460 aftershocks some very strong. most of those killed were in amatrice and accumuli. these are medieval towns built in an area with one of the highest earthquake risks in western europe. tents set up around the most devastated areas are serving as shelter for those displaced. many lost everything. n hope to find survivors. after a nearby earthquake in 2009, a person was pulled out alive after 72 hours. randy: and breaking news in lawrence, a home goes up in flames overnight. flames have been ripping through several apartment buildings. the firefighters had to bring in more.

but the injuries are not believed to be serious. we are on the scene and we will bring you more details as we get them. emily: right now, police are on the hunt for the suspect who stabbed to death a 15-year-old boy in new bedford. this was the scene last night at middle and chauncey streets in the city's west end. two other teenagers were also hurt, but are expected to survive. one neighbor described the victim as a good kid who hadn't been in trouble. others who live here say this kind of violence is becoming all too common. >> it's not like it's a big surprise anymore. streets. emily: this was the city's second homicide this summer. the victim in this case has not been identified. and it's not clear what started the violence. right now, a young woman is in critical condition a suspect on the loose after a shooting in lawrence. sources tell newscenter5 the woman was shot in the head while sitting in a car on hancock street. it happened around 6:00 last night. police scoured the neighborhood for hours looking for evidence. randy: right now, police are searching for the vandals behind

gay-friendly publication. police are investigating this as a hate crime. and they're asking for help in finding those suspects. a group of seven was captured on surveillance leaving the explosive in the box for the rainbow times. the editor says it's not the first time the boxes were targeted since going up three months ago. they've been urinated in, filled with trash, and now this. but the message from the paper is clear, salem's mayor who was -- is clear. we could use this even more, to go ahead and promote the paper, which is what this beautiful city is all about. randy: salem's mayor who was on the cover of this month's edition released a statement calling the attack cowardly. emily: right now the owner of a helicopter is counting himself lucky after crashing into a reservoir. that reservoir is in the middle of the ashland state park. david diana says he knew he was in trouble and was trying to

into the water. diana clicked off his harness and bailed boaters nearby helped him get to the shore without a scratch. last night, he took pains to inspect what's left of his $45,000 toy. >> they think it can be fixed. [laughter] if my wife allows me. a lot of convincing. was done by the crash the gas tank remained intact. this is a reservoir but it's not the town's water supply. a small plane that crashed into the quabbin reservoir is removed. that plane made an emergency landing tuesday and was stuck on a sand bar all day yesterday. a helicopter was called in to lift it out, and bring it to the airport in orange. the pilot says he had engine trouble before the landing. as boston police investigate a deadly incident involving a

emily: right now, about a dozen people are hurt after a series of tornadoes strikes indiana. as many as eight twisters touched down north of indianapolis yesterday. tens of thousands lost power. there are no reports of any serious injuries. damage is believed to be substantial. and that system is heading here, cindy? cindy: they broke out in front of the frontal boundary that will cross the area tomorrow and i think a lot of it -- there is

reports of tornadoes in the past 24 hours and that is a big outbreak for tuesday. we are tracking the tropics and tonight while you were sleeping gaston became a hurricane. the wind is now 75 miles per hour as it moves to the northwest. we also continue to track this tropical wave over the next couple days as the wind tears apart and that as we get toward the weekend it will strengthen again just east of bermuda. it's not a concern for us in new england, computer models of suggesting that it will continue to shift toward the southeast bahamas and then toward florida. beyond that point there are several possibilities of where

how strong is this way is going to be? it could develop into a tropical storm or hurricane and would be given a name. we will continue to keep a close eye on it. meantime, we are nearing the end of the month, and look how warm it is. right now we are running for degrees above average and currently this is the warmest august on record. we are running a degree above average -- you can see how mild it is, living in the 60's to near 70. just to give you some perspective, the average high temperature this time of year is about 78 degrees. he will start to notice the humidity climate as well -- there is a southwesterly wind

this is what triggered that severe weather and there is a chance for a few showers and thunderstorms with patchy cloud cover now. it's a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures to the lower 80's, new to upper 80's away from the south coast where it will be running in the lower 80's. we did see some building clouds and this evening wll overnight we will see more cloud cover and the temperatures overnight will hold in most areas above 70 degrees. tonight is when you use air-conditioning if you have it but all eyes are focused on this frontal boundary crossing the area. it looks pretty widely scattered but not everybody will see the rain. the morning hours are pretty quiet and my lunchtime a couple

uber plans to expand the retirement service nationally. randy: your help this morning, a new study could help save thousands of breast cancer patients from unnecessary chemotherapy. researchers looked at gene activity in tumors. they found that nearly half of women with early-stage breast cancer have little risk of the cancer returning or spreading based on the gene behavior. that means they would gain little by chemo except the side effects. yesterday in the new england journal of medicine. trending stories this morning, emily: u.s. soccer star hope solo is kicked off the team for something she said during the olympics. solo will serve a six-month suspension for calling the swedish team cowards in rio earlier this month. it happened after sweden eliminated the u.s. the president of u.s. soccer calls solo's comments unacceptable. randy: an exciting discovery in space. researchers announced yesterday

the planet has the same mass as earth and could possibly sustain life. the discovery could lead to finding more planets in the universe that can hold life. emily: take a look at this. that could be the largest pearl in the world. it was found inside a giant clam in the philippines. the pearl weighs 75 pounds and is more than two feet long. it still needs verification from gemologists but it easily surpasses the current record holder of 14 pounds. the red sox drop the ball against the rays literally. randy: the bad play that cost them the game ahead in news to go. then new on the eyeopener at 5:00, a new rating for boston restaurants. the easy way to gauge health

other departments. one firefighter was taken to the hospital. police injuries are not believed to be serious. we have a crew on the scene. we'll bring you more as we get it. emily: at least 10 people are dead after a nine-hour siege at the american university in kabul, afghanistan. a government spokesperson says 7 students were killed, as well as 2 police officers and a security guard during yesterday's attack. it started after a suicide bomber targeted the university entrance. police killed two other attackers, putting a stop to the violence. no charges will be filed against police officers who shot and killed a terror suspect in roslindale. prosecutors released new video showing usaamah rahim entering a drug store moments before he was shot by police in june of 2015. police say he threatened them with a knife. rahim was allegedly planning a large-scale attack on other officers. rahim's family says police should have tried to de-escalate the situation, first.

run crash in the south end. a person was killed on east newton street around 5 yesterday morning. at this point, police are not releasing any information about the victim or the car involved. emily: high bail for a convicted rapist accused in a new attack in the south end. eduardo rodriguez is being held on half-a million dollars bail. he hid his face yesterday in court during his arraignment. prosecutors say he raped a woman near a south end playground on monday. he was released from prison last year the new hampshire woman charged in the overdose death of her daughter is expected to change her plea to guilty today. jazzmyn rood faces several charges in connection with the death of eve tarmey in a rochester motel last year. rood allegedly knew that another man, who is also charged, was going to give tarmey heroin, but left the room. randy: a new plan to educate the public about the dangers of concussions. former soccer star taylor

athletic association will announce today the second annual concussion awareness week. it's a weeklong initiative in september to educate people particularly those involved in youth sports about traumatic brain injuries that can result from concussions. emily: a botched play costs the red sox in saint pete. tied up with the rays, two out in the bottom of the 11th. the throw to first is no good and the ball is dropped at home. the umpire initially called the runner out but sandy leon couldn't hang onto it. the rays win, 4-3. and some concern for promising rookie andrew benintendi earlier in the game. he admits he made a base-running mistake here. it looks like he rolls his ankle. but really it's the knee that was injured. he'll have an mri at some point today. randy: team great britain took home a boat-load of medals from the rio olympics and 900 identical bags. athletes were issued team luggage and that proved to be a
