5 on the opioid crisis -- a local family grieving after losing their son to an overdose. ben: sadly, they know their story is becoming all too common new at 6, newscenter 5's mary saladna is live in marlborough where they are reaching out to others to spark awareness and action. good evening, mary. mary: purple flags, 1531 of them fill the front lawn of the walker building in marrlboro. each one of them represnets a life lost to opioid overdose last year in massachusetts. >> that was somebody's child, somebody's rather, somebody's tribute is the brainchild of kathy leonard, who lost her son jonathan to heroin two years ago. >> he was a national honor society student. we are losing 129 a day in this country. mary the idea is to keep people : talking about the opioid crisis. massachusetts is leading the way to erasing the stigma of addition. when cheryl lost her son 5 years

now, olympic champion gymnast aly raisman continues her welcome-home tour around massachusetts. it will end in needham, by the way. today raisman met young gymnasts at brestyan's gym in burlington, where aly has trained to become one of the world's best. she earned a gold and two silver medals at the summer games in brazil. she loved rio thanks to crowds that made her feel at home, -- at u.s., it felt like we were at home. it was very cool. maria: very cool. and tonight, she is throwing out the first pitch at fenway park, and tomorrow morning needham honors its native champion with a rally for aly at town hall, starting at 11:00. ben: very cool. all right, a rare sighting in new england. one man definitely taking notice. have a look. >> whoa!

ben: pure massachusetts joy there. maria said it best. a group was looking for tuna when that excited fisherman had an unexpected encounter with a small pod of orca whales about 12-miles off chatham. orcas, which are so well known on the west coast, have a much smaller population on the east coast that is centered around newfoundland and labrador. the females seen in the video can grow up to twenty-three feet in length and weigh four tons. adult males can reach thirty feet and tip the scales at eight tons. here i was enjoying that video 10 times this morning, but now i have all of this great information. thank you. all right, are we going to wank? ben: i think we are. no. maria: new at 6:00. a cat in dorchester using up one , of her 9 lives. the animal rescue league of boston tweeting out this video of the poor thing when she got
