wcvb newscenter 5 at 11 starts now. a community morning after a teenager is in an ou i -- crash. police investigating reporter: two several -- shootings. one bound to a wheelchair. what we are hearing from people. mike: comfortable humidity today. a chance for rain and when it increases. reid: firefighters battling flames on plum island. the inferno that can be seen for miles. diane: a big welcome home celebration for champion. the message to young fans. reid: right now, a teenager killed in a crash, another teen behind the wheel now behind bars charged with driving under the influence. good evening. i'm reid lamberty. diane: and i'm diane cho. newscenter 5's juli mcdonald is live in lunenberg, where friends are shocked by this loss. reporter: this is supposed to be the best time of their lives for new grads here in lunenburg, heading to college in the next few days.

cloud over this community, as those new grads are forced to move on without a beloved classmate. broken hearts in lunenburg this weekend, as the community mourns the death of a recent high school graduate. his classmates and friends are holding on to their best memories of austin aj robbins and, to each other. brianna hamel: we all came and brought flowers. his football helmet, his practice jersey. things he's known for. there's a bucket hat up there we all loved when he wore it. stevie schaeffer: he made everyone laugh, no matter what was going on. he's just the nicest guy i've ever come across. i will never meet anyone like him. reporter: the one-car crash happened around 3:15 saturday morning on dark hollis road. the driver, 19-year-old joseph kapp of gardner wasn't hurt, and was arrested on oui charges. another passenger, sean mcniff , is in the hospital. brianna: it's not real. i want to wake up from it. i feel like i'm going to wake up

happen. reporter: aj's friends smiled through their tears while they remembered him. and as they huddled together in the last place he was live, they -- alive, they felt thankful for the precious years they shared. >> mike: i'm so glad for having n to know him. i'm so grateful. i can't believe he's gone. reporter: that driver is being held on $10,000 bail. newscenter 5. reid: right now, violence in boston. tonight, police are investigating two deadly shootings, which bring the number of deadly homicides for the month up to five. newscenter 5's todd kazakiewich is live at the scene of one of the killings in jamaica plain. reporter: at this hour, both overnight homicides remain unsolved. one of them happening right here on center street in jp. friends and family are in shock.

was in disbelief because i'd just seen him before. reporter: jade ortiz is mourning the loss of his friend shot , around 3:30 saturday morning outside 7/11 on centre street in jp. jade is desperate for answers as to why anyone would shoot and kill a man using a wheelchair. >> even though his situation wasn't the best, he always had a smile on his face, and he seemed to make people left alive. personality. reporter: boston police responded to several other shootings early saturday morning, including a homicide on westville street in dorchester. the shootings just hours before j'ouvert and the carribean festival. >> i think at least three of these shootings were tied into the parties in the neighborhood. reporter: the shootings are part of a spike in gun violence in the city over the past 10 days, but boston police are making progress, saturday announcing the arrest of a hyde park man for a homicide last weekend in roxbury and the arrest of a dorchester man for a murder back in march in roxbury.

still, mayor walsh says there's reason for optimism in the city. mayor walsh: we've seen a lot of great work going on, and we're going to continue the work and the effort of everyone, the community working with us, activism in the community, peacewalks by the clergy, peacewalks by the police officers. building those relationships. reporter: for the year, shootings and homicides are trending down in boston, but statistics don't mean much to newscenter 5. reid: take a look at this video. fast-moving flames destroy a home on plum island. this video, one of many sent to us by viewers. everyone did manage to make it out of that house safely. investigators say the fire sparked on the top floor of the building on 20th street. it quickly spread engulfing the entire home. firefighters from several communities worked to put out the flames. a person who lived there was leaving the beach when realized what was happening.

has been reaching out toreporter: black voters, that mostly white rallies like this one today, where we didn't see any african americans. >> vote for donald trump. i will fix it. reporter: trump, vowing to make american cities safe again. >> it can't get any worse. reporter: but he did not help his case saturday by tweeting, not to offer sympathy at first, but to score political points. dwayne wade's cousin was just shot and killed walking her baby in chicago. just what i have been saying. african-americans will vote trump. and he misspelled the nba star's first name. quickly he deleted that, correcting the typo. only an hour later did he offer condolences. that initial tweet brought a firestorm of reaction from actor don cheadle to this voter, who tweeted, trump is a sick, opportunistic man. this doesn't earn you aa votes. today, hillary clinton had no public events, but did get her's -- her first intelligence

started releasing batches of documents tied to clinton's daily schedule from her time as secretary of state. all the detailed schedules will not be released before the election. diane: the suspect arrested in the murder of two nuns in mississippi has confessed to the crime. police who interrogated rodney sanders say he admitted to the murders of sister margaret held and sister paula merrill. but gave no reason for the crimes. sister merrill is from stoneham, massachusetts. her family released a statement today saying in part, for mr. sanders, and ache for the consequences in his life that drove him to take this terrible action. " marking one year after the death of a toddler in massachusetts foster care. the family of avalena conway-coxon released balloons today in remembrance in worcester. after the toddler's death, an investigation found avalena's foster mother did not receive a thorough background check. her grandfather says he is angry about the way the case has been handled. >> i am not going to live to see

not die this fairly until the truth comes out -- early until the truth comes out. diane: the office of worcester da joe hurley sent us there a response, saying the case remains under investigation, and detectives work hard to bring justice to the victims especially victims that don't have a voice. reid: tufts university campus all are tonight, after a student will go to a stranger in his , home on college avenue in somerville. the student told police the man ran out of the home and took off in a dark colored sedan. police have increased patrols in the area. mbta police are asking for your help tonight in identifying this man. he is wanted for questioning in connection to lewd conduct on a green line trolley. the alleged incident happened earlier this month. anyone with information can contact police. diane: boston police are looking for the person who stole an ambulance this morning. the boston ems ambulance was taken from charlestown just

state, boston and everett police were all on scene investigating on drive b off veterans avenue. no word on whether any equipment was stolen. reid: investigators have determined the cause of an overnight fire in manchester-by-the-sea. authorities say a malfunction in the basement's dehumidifier unit started a fire in the vine street home around 1:30 this morning. smoke detectors alerted residents to the danger and they were able to get out of the building in time. the fire was knocked down within an hour and no one was hurt. to charlton now, where a tractor-trailer shutdown the mass pike for over an hour today. -- shut down the mass pike for over an hour today. the fire started around 7:30 this morning on the mass pike west underneath the hammond hill road overpass. the area was cleared around 9:00. the cause of the fire is still unknown. one man is under arrest tonight, after this fiery car crash in peabody. state police say it happened just before 3:00 this morning on route 128-north. only one car was involved. the driver was arrested for oui.

announcer: you're watching wcvb newscenter five at 11:00. reid: saved by their own quick thinking and a quick message, two people rescued from a deserted island after a u.s. navy aircraft spotted an sos etched in the sand. the two men were stranded on a remote island close to hawaii for eight days. they had limited supplies, and no emergency equipment. the men were able to use flashing lights to signal a passing ship that notified the u.s. navy of their locat diane: an engine ripped off a southwest plane 30,000 feet above the ground. frightened passengers putting on their oxygen masks as the pilots made an emergency landing. now the search is on for why it happened. an in-air emergency. this southwest jet losing one of its engines. the pilot breathing heavily >> engine failure, number 1 engine, we're descending. diane: this image, showing the jet engine ripped apart, is what the 99 passengers on board saw as they looked out their windows.

sounded like a 18 wheeler tire blowing and we started smelling smoke. diane: oxygen masks deploying. that's passenger stephanie miller and her husband michael putting theirs on. stephanie miller: the children were screaming and crying. diane: flight data shows the plane above 30,000 feet quickly descending over 20,000 feet in just eight minutes. stephanie miller: our ears started popping, because we went down pretty fast. diane: the boeing 737 landing safely in pensacola,nl 30 minutes after taking off. col. stephen ganyard: the point here is this was not just any engine failure. this was an explosive event. this is very, very rare and it's very dangerous. engine threw metal into cabin. it was close to where someone was sitting. someone could have easily been killed. diane: southwest says they are cooperating with federal investigators. passengers say they are thankful for the pilot who kept them alive.

line employees now facing medical complications. the screech owl's wing was broken when it hit a trolley at brookline village this week. but now vets at tufts university say surgery will be challenging because the owl's blood won't flow properly. vets say the condition is linked to rat poison and is common in predators like owls and hawks. two sea turtles were rescued today in cape cod bay. the two leatherback turtles were found entangled in a buoy line. officials from the center for coastal studies say the turtles suffered only minor injuries. a great day to be out there on the water, if you are a turtle. or not. mike: a beautiful day. let's check out the temperatures. it was a perfect beach day.
