morning, breaking news as one of the country's busiest airports is thrown into chaos. overnight reports of shots fired brought l.a.x. to a standstill with some passengers even running out onto the tarmac. this morning police are giving the all clear. happening right now trackin on the move right now, the new tropical storm watch just issued by the national weather service and heavy rain elsewhere creating all sorts of problems. it was a close call for passengers on board this flight after the engine seemed to just blow apart. oxygen masks deployed as the pilot safely completed an emergency landing. hear what the airline is saying. and it was ladies night at

britney spears and beyonce taking the stage and some wild fashion ahead. a good monday morning. we begin with breaking news from los angeles. it was a travel nightmare at l.a.x. >> several terminals evacuated. incoming flights stopped and traffic into that airport a standstill. all this as a precaution we're told after there were reports it turns out those reports were false. but the damage done. >> it was chaotic. we got off the plane and were exiting and saw just a mob, a crowd running towards us. >> reporter: these frantic scenes at the nation's second busiest airport, passengers running in all directions, many onto the tarmac at l.a.x. after reports of shots fired. abc's matt gutman was there as it unfolded. >> pretty eerie site to see the

lots of people scattering. they closed down a couple of terminals and you see everywhere people having to hoof it to try to get where they're going even out of this airport. pretty chaotic here and pretty scary here. >> reporter: the scare forced the faa to call for a ground stop. all flights west of the mississippi hailed at their origin. passengers in some terminals had to be rescreened causing long lines. finally flights resuming after about two hours. the reports of gunshots turned out to instead spurred by loud noises. police looking into the source. a man in a zorro costume deta detained. still not clear if he was connected to the incident. he talked to our abc station. >> they didn't arrest me. they explained to me crazy stuff happens in the airport and within two or three minutes it was over. >> reporter: the incident coming exactly two weeks after chaos erupted at new york's jfk

security check point there sent people running in panic and the governor ordered an investigation into the police response. zorro costume only in los angeles. normal operations resumed at l.a.x. one of the busiest airports. you can imagine there will be a ripple effect today in air travel. >> a lot of people at l.a.x. this morning. >> yeah. the other big story that we're following, tracking several active tropical storm systems. >> so hurricane gaston is getting sge east of bermuda. a new depression is south of key west and headed northward in the gulf. another depression appears to be headed for the outer banks of north carolina and a tropical storm watch in effect. >> the weather deteriorating in key west as tropical depression nine moves closer with wind, rain, lightning, time lapsed video and it's expected to get stronger but where it is headed, well, nobody is really sure right now. more now from abc's rob

nine is for it to become a tropical storm and wednesday, thursday go into florida but low confidence on the track and intensity. we'll have to watch it closely. >> the other troop cal depression, the one that's heading up the atlantic coast is expected to become a tropical storm later on today. there's also extreme weather in the midwest including flooding in the cincinnati area. heavy rain closed roads and subamericaed cars but no injuries reported. three to five inches fell in less than three breaking a 42-year-old record. thousands of people were without power last night and a lightning strike on its antenna knocked out our affiliate there in cincinnati off the air for a little while. there were funnel clouds south of detroit yesterday and a tornado or two may have touched down but the tornadoes were not confirmed by the national weather service. there were no injuries and the only damage reported to trees and crops. officials said the funnel clouds were very weak circulations. it's just about ten weeks

clinton about her health, saying both candidates should release detailed medical history. kendis and diane. >> no response yet from the clinton camp about that. >> not yet. >> abc's adrienne bankert in washington, thank you. a bus driver is now facing criminal charges after a deadly crash in louisiana. two people died and 36 injured after the bus slammed into an existing crash scene hitting a fire truck and three other vehicles. state police now say the honduran man was here illegally and did not have a d license. a southwest airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing after an engine exploded. photos from passengers on the plane show a piece of one of the engines is just completely missing. the flight was headed from new orleans to orlando when it was diverted to pensacola. no one was hurt. experts say engine trouble like this is almost unheard of. officials in italy are promising to look into allegations of negligence and fraud in the wake of last week's earthquake. nearly 3400 people died in the

a new jersey transit cop is being called a hero understandly after risking his life to stave a man who is lying on the train tracks. the man had been involved in some sort of disturbance and laid down on the tracks in front of that that was. officer victor ortiz struggled to pull the man away but eventually dragged him to safety with just seconds to spare. in chicago, two brothers have been charged in the fatal shooting of nba star dwyane wade's cousin. a mother of four was shot and killed as she was pushing her baby stroller. police say the bullets were intended for someone else. the police superintendent says the suspects were both felons on parole and are an example of the
