clinton aide huma abedin, stood by him. tonight, however, abedin has apparently reached her limit. will this latest tabloid story have political implications for her boss? here's abc's david wright. >> reporter: she is the woman behind the nation's most powerful woman. hillary clinton's closest aide huma abedin, seen here leaving a campaign fund-raiser in the hamptons last night. just as the "new york post" was breaking the latest weiner, allegedly caught sexting again. this time with his son right there asleep in the bed with him. for wiener, this was the third strike. tonight their marriage is over. after long and painful consideration and work on my marriage, i've made the decision to separate from my husband, abedin said in a statement. >> really? we're talking about anthony wiener's junk again?

for them? obviously it is. but is it also a political problem for hillary clinton? >> anything personal that unfolds in a campaign becomes a political problem. >> reporter: it's already been a tough month for abedin and the clinton campaign. questions are swirling over the campaign's latest e-mail scandal which has to do not with clinton's e-mails but abedin's. she's under scrutiny for allegedly fast-tracking access to the clinton state kept for big contributors to the cln issue. >> it is impossible to figure out where the clinton foundation ends and the state department begins. >> reporter: now it's not only her e-mails drawing trump's attention but her marriage as well. >> she's married to a guy that is uncontrolled and uncontrollable. he's a sick person. and, you know, she has access to classified information. >> is trump out of line, calling

"somebody just climbed into my bed," he reportedly texted. that photo may set the stage for a bitter custody battle. it puts huma abedin in an incredibly tough spot. the "post" says after sending the photo of his son in the bed, wiener momentarily started to panic, referring back to his previous scandals in this exchange, the paper published. oh, i was squared, for half a second i thought i'd posted

"whatever, you did it on purpose," she sent back. could there have been political motivation to this expose? who knows. the "post" did not identify her. >> this can happen to anyone so it's almost a cautionary tale. we all have these self-destructive drives. we just have to work at reining them in so they don't destroy our future possibilities. >> reporter: there but for the grace of god, and some basic good judgment. what happens to him now? does he have any future, can he come bacro lost his column that he had. he's lost his television show that he's had. it looks like any connection he had with power has now been severed by huma separating from him. i don't think he can recover from this. >> reporter: the bigger question now, given the timing, what the fallout might be for huma abedin and her boss. i'm david wright for "nightline" in new york. next, the shocking and rising gun violence in chicago really hits home for nba star

attention to the grinding war on chicago's streets. and tonight abc's pierre thomas has the latest on the case and on this epidemic of violence. >> reporter: when dwyane wade, nba superstar, made an appearance on espn's town hall on gun view lens last week, he didn't know just how personal gun violence was about to become for him. >> it's important for all of us to help each other, to go back and say, how did this start, let's see how we can change there. >> reporter: little did wade know a day later his own family would become front and center. >> we got a female shot in the head -- >> reporter: his cousin, kiya aldridge, gunned down in chicago, a victim of gunfire, while pushing a baby stroller. the family overwhelmed in grief. >> i was crying, why my baby? >> reporter: an outraged dwyane wade took to social media

today in chicago. another act of senseless gun violence. four kids lost their mom for no reason. unreal. enough is enough. the head of chicago police held a hastily arranged press conference to express his anger about the carnage. >> all chicagoans should be frustrated. >> reporter: 22-year-old darren surrels and 26-year-old darren surrels jr. being held a past gun offense. so far this year in chicago 429 people have been shot and killed. >> these two offenders are the prime example of the challenge we face here in chicago with repeat gun offenders that don't care who they shoot, don't care whose life they take. >> reporter: we were recently in chicago and got to see firsthand the violence unfold. >> they're saying a couple of people shot, two different locations. >> reporter: we're on chicago's troubled south side riding with pauley lapointe.

you know? >> he's what some call a nightcrawler, a video journalist who spends his evenings covering shooting after shooting. >> i'm going to bishop first, it's a hot block. >> reporter: in this neighborhood, seems like every block is hot. >> it's definitely a homicide. >> there's a body. covered up. how many times have you shot a dead victim? >> at least 200 this year. >> 200 this year? >> yeah. >> those gone. she thinks she knows who may have been shot. she's calling somebody and they're not answering their phone and she's worried it's someone she knows. >> the cries of chicago at every shooting. >> reporter: even before the cries subside and the body can be removed, another call comes in. >> a lot of people standing around there. >> oh, yeah.

>> somebody's dead on the street. doesn't look like there are a lot of witnesses. >> it's probably that those witnesses don't want to talk. got to be 2,000 people standing on the other side of the police tape, somebody's not talking. >> meanwhile the music plays on as if nothing happens. ? >> there's something just -- not right about the way these people die on the street like america, killing people, and it's something that should be addressed as a major health issue. >> reporter: in fact, the american medical association has recognized this as a public health crisis. they're seeking to overturn 20-year-old legislation preventing the cdc from researching gun violence. we finally stopped filming at 3:00 a.m. saturday morning. but by 11:00 a.m., more gun violence in chicago. four of this woman's family members have just been shot.

identify their loved ones, it's like i'm unzipping that bag, looking at her. >> reporter: at chicago pd they're fighting crime with 27,000 security cameras and sophisticated microphones deployed by shot spotter, a california company supplying audio sensors in 90 u.s. cities. we met the superintendent in late june. frustration was building. >> chicago's a city of 2.6 million people. so out of that 2.6 million, that's 1,400 individuals that are really driving most of gun violence in the city. essentially since january 1st, chicago police department has recovered one illegal gun per hour this year. >> that is hundreds? >> 4,000. >> 4,000? >> roughly 4,000. >> reporter: less than two months later, according to the chicago pd, the number is now a staggering 6,000 guns. >> we recover more guns than l.a. and new york combined. >> reporter: chicago police are trying a new approach. by focusing their efforts on 1,400 people they say have prior

chicago's strategic subject list. >> we say, hey, you want to change your lifestyle, we're willing to help you. but if they don't choose to change their lifestyle, we'll come after them with everything. the sad tragedy of it is a lot of them become victims of gun violence. >> reporter: the men arrested for wade's death were on that list. the death of wade's cousin ironic. he's now returning to his hometown to play for the chicago bulls. wanting to use his celebrity to bring change. but that death underscoring the chicago now face. >> this reprehensible act of violence is the example of why we need to change the way we treat habitual offenders in the city of chicago. when will enough be enough? >> reporter: enough? this is a city where a 9-year-old boy was shot to death by gang baners as retribution. >> put the guns down, please. this is my only baby. >> reporter: where a woman was gunned down a block away from police headquarters as she got
