>> from boston's news leader, this is wcvb newscenter 5 at noon. erika: good afternoon, thanks so much for joining us. here's a look at some of the stories happening right now. tense moments in cambridge as firefighters work to free a construction worker. that worker was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. erika: the mayor of a lawrence says he would like to sit down with maine's embattled governor, paul lepage. that comes a day after lepage blamed drug dealers in that city for his state's opioid crisis. emily: everett city leaders are demanding new action after

company is responding today. sera: the mayor sent this letter to uber demanding increased scrutiny, a now meeting is in with works with uber, after two -- and now i'm eating is in the works. the rest of pro-griffin propping the city to demand action from uber. >> opening doors and fondling himself on the street. sera: griffin is accused of exposing in two separate incidents in everett. he also has an open case in boston for a similar crime. and last month, everett police arrested darnell booth for allegedly raping a teenaged girl he met while driving for uber. prosecutors said he has a long criminal history. >> uber needs to step up and take a closer look at this. these situations are appalling and they can't continue to happen. sera: last night the mayor of , everett sent a letter to uber

to discuss increased scrutiny of drivers. he writes it is clear to me that , the current driver screening system is simply not working. >> we will move as aggressively as we possibly can. sera: governor baker just signed a new state law, regulating ride sharing companies, requiring twice yearly background checks on drivers. >> if anybody under the new law breaks the law, we're going to find out, we'll be in a position to notify the transporation networking company. sera: that new log goes into effect early that is why the mayor of everett wanted to contact uber directly to get them to step things up to put those requirements into effect now. erika: some breaking news in cambridge. a construction worker suffered serious injuries this morning. he was working at a job site at 1868 mass ave when the accident occurred. cambridge fire officials say he had to be extricated from the site.

governor says he plans to meet with a democratic lawmaker to try to make amends for leaving an obscene voicemail message. governor paul lepage also says he isn't ruling out resigning. this, as the mayor of lawrence says he'd like to sit down with lepage, after lepage blamed drug dealers in lawrence and lowell for contributing to the opioid crisis in his state. doug meehan is live in lawrence. doug: maine is blaming places like this for its drug problem although the people here say don't point the finger at lawrence. >> i don't think it's ok, i don't think anyone should be pointing their finger down at lawrence is ok 'cause i love my city. doug: take a stroll along this hard-working city along the merrimack and you'll find that people here take great offence to the governor of maine's recent statement. during a regional conference of governors in boston, the

state's worsening opioid crisis on drug dealers from lowell and lawrence. >> why are you blaming the city of lawrence when things like this happen all over the united states? >> it's not a city problem it's a national problem. doug: the governor sits in an office 130 miles away from the street and the people of his town. massachusetts governor charlie baker sang the opioid crisis does not discriminate and does not have boundaries. >> i think this is one area where the region the way the new -- where the new england region may be able to engage the federal government in a collaborative approach into doing something about trafficking and that's the way i think we should be thinking about it. doug: back to the mayor of lawrence. he does not shy away from the fact and admits that there is a drug problem here in town but he is also working hard to make sure those who need and want it

you are looking at live pictures from cocoa beach in florida. you can see the surf starting to turn. erika: several storms in the tropics. beautiful beach weather but the water could be rough. mike: from the gulf coast of along the east coast including new england. the storms are churning up. wave action toward the shoreline. he that in mind as you start planning holidct about. one is a hurricane. the strong as one right now. showing a little strengthening in the last couple of hours. window next sustained at 105 miles per hour. it's out in the middle of the atlantic and headed up to cooler water. a wind driven rain for europe is a possibility. tropical depression number eight off the carolina coast. still does not have a name yet

watch the most. it starts to move its way northward. a cold front will turn it in kick it out to sea. a lot of tropical moisture around this one so we could see enhancement and some of the rain. it is going down in the gulf of mexico. back out to the atlantic. staying far enough away but certainly churning up oceans and making for some rough surf. we will talk more about the surf and what all of that in a few moments. erika: right now this huge factory fire is under investigation in pittsfield. flames consuming the abandoned building on elmvale place last night. authorities say the building has been home to squatters for years. it's unclear if anyone was inside when the flames broke out. emily: a man is dead after trying to save several children at a waterfall in bristol, new hampshire. the state marine patrol says the victim jumped in to help a child who was struggling to swim in

trouble himself. other people at the falls were able to rescue the child, and 3 other children, but didn't get to the man out in time. -- did not get to the man in time. >> this is a large pool and as a result it disappears -- it appears the victim if our time swimming. emily: one of the children, an 8-year-old, was resuscitated with cpr. all 4 kids were taken to the hospital to be checked out. erika: primary voters heading to trump's campaign will affect races for the house and senate. emily: lana zak reports the two candidates at the top are making an aggressive play for voters and dollars. lana: the down ballot effect of donald trump or your voters in florida and arizona are casting ballots today into test cases. the races of marco rubio and john mccain.

after mccain's war record. >> he's a war hero because he was captured. lana: trump eventually endorsed the arizona senator. >> i hold in the highest esteem senator john mccain lana:. mccain has said he is in the fight of his life in the selection and the story is similar for rubio facing off against a republican real estate developer who has been called florida's little trump. debbie wasserman schultz russian hackers led to a public battle with bernie sanders who endorsed her challenger >>. a real crisis of confidence. if people feel russia is involved many voters will look at the aftermath of this election and not accept it. lana: hillary clinton continues her massive fundraising drive repairing for the debate. -- preparing for the debate. the first taking place in just one month. recent poll numbers show donald

-- the next likely test for voters, what happens in that debate arena. erika: hillary clinton holding her lead over donald trump nationally but the race is tightening. the new monmouth university poll has clinton up by seven points, 46% to 39%. that's down from a 13-point lead earlier this month, right after the democratic convention. emily: former presidti into the new hampshire governor's race. he's endorsing chris sununu in the state's gop primary. kasich took a surprise second in the granite state presidential primary. erika: boston making a new push to increase diversity and its exam schools. city leaders started this last spring, recruiting specifically from schools that often didn't send any students to the programs. part of the push is the exam school initiative which provides free tutoring for students but is largely unknown to many families. the new effort started after

emily: growing concern about the possible closure of some public schools. the herald reports the contractor overseeing the city's 10-year education and facilities plan has delayed a $1.6 million study on enrollment. that has parents concerned that the city still wants to close some buildings. a bps spokesperson says the contractor is awaiting updated 2015 information to begin the study. look past rio. the new competition he signed up for. emily: a terrifying crash caught on camera. the heroic moment coming out of the 10 car pileup. mike: a beautiful day today. getting there could involve some stormy weather. erika: some iphone users suing apple.

emily: the agricultural department has closed offices in five states after receiving anonymous threats. of those closed offices are in colorado, connecticut, maryland, north carolina and west virginia . the department is working with the fbi and federal and local law enforcement determine whether the threats are credible. new video of a dramatic rescue during a 10-car pile up in binghamton, new york. the dash-cam video shows the chilling first moments of the h car catches fire. the flames quickly spread before someone uses a fire extinguisher to put them out. the group then pulls the driver out likely saving her life. the city's mayor posted this video online thanking everyone involved in the rescue. erika: amazing. ryan lochte giving his first live interview since the olympics on good morning america. elizabeth hur reports, the embattled swimmer confirmed he

" and is hoping to put that scandal in rio behind him. elizabeth: telling this very public lie on nbc. >> the guy pulled out his gun, put it to my four head. elizabeth: calling what has been reported about the now infamous incident, most of it caught on surveillance video -- not all true. true was having the gun pointed to my four head and cocked. that was over exaggerated. the story about me vandalizing the bathroom is absurd. it never happened. elizabeth: lots and his teammates initially claimed to be robbed at gunpoint. lochte now claims he was intoxicated and made a big mistake >>. it's been really hard.

$1 million worth of endorsement deals but has since been dropped by four sponsors including ralph lauren and speedo. lochte agreed to be part of dancing with the stars before the scandal broke and says he is sticking with the decision to move on with his life. >> this is perfect with the show because i want to put that behind me. everyone's got to be sick and tired of hearing about this. i know i am. i just want to move forward. have charged lochte with filing a false police report and his lawyer says they have not yet seen the indictment but they will cooperate. emily: california lawmakers are pushing for mandatory prison sentences for defendants convicted of rape. it comes after former stanford student brock turner was convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. the judge in the case sentenced him to six months in jail, followed by probation. legislation passed yesterday

that bill the governor's desk. some iphone users are taking on apple over defective touch-screens on the 6 and 6-s. they've filed a class-action lawsuit, accusing the tech giant of fraud. users say the touch-screen becomes unresponsive, which then makes the iphone un-usable. the suit claims apple has known about the defect for a while, but refuses to fix it. the federal government is still backing the mbta's proposed green line extension. in a letter obtained by the globe, federal officials say they need a lot more information before approving funding. the planned expansion will take the green line into somerville and medford. erika: general electric is growing financial support behind m.i.t.'s energy research program. ge will donate $7.5 million to the school's research effort which is focused on finding new ways to cut carbon emissions and replace fossil fuels. the donation comes as the

headquarters shift to boston. extreme drought conditions are prompting concern for utility companies across massachusetts. eversource is taking steps to try to prevent trouble. they're checking trees weakened by the lack of water. eversource has hired arborists to spot dying trees before they collapse. >> they are trained to look for and spot the impact drought is having on trees. some trees areng expect. they are losing leaves and losing branches. erika: ever source plans to invest $23 million in this year in the baystate to remove hazardous trees and trim around power lines. emily: if we had a nor'easter these would come down. mike: that is a big concern. these trees have been weakened and we will see a lot of power outages going on. look, for boston, over eight

year we are number one -- this is one you don't want to win. driest summer that we have ever recorded. it would not take much to knock us out of this and we make it that rain tomorrow night but it looks like right now it is going down as one of the driest summers anyone has seen. not a drop of rain to talk about . there is a frontal boundary to the west. our forecast for tomorrow tomorrow night into thursday i think we have this opportunity. a few fairweather clouds. 76 degrees. dew points measures how much moisture is in the air. that is a very comfortable range we're in right now and that is where we stay today. later tonight and tomorrow and as we had to thursday it could be quite sticky. after that, it drops down. hopefully we'll get some rain and then behind it we have a

today, mostly sunny, culpable humidity. a seabreeze inland about 84 degrees. her tonight, partly cloudy skies. last night was bone dry and so comfortable for sleeping. 62 to 60 degrees for your overnight low. the line on the tropics, with all these three systems what we really wanted to pay attention to is this tropical depression number eight. i've got in and then we have the system lifting from the carolinas. the two are staying separate but i've seen it many times for this kind of wraps up additional moisture, not necessarily at the center of the storm but enough that it can collide with this front. a chance of seeing showers and thunderstorms late tomorrow night. i think the threat is going to hang on to thursday if this front is in the right position. that would be a welcomed sight. on speckles through we will be

turning up the ocean. a moderate risk of rip currents. five to seven foot seas. moderate risk of recurrent. i think this will be repeated through the weekend. if you're at the beach this weekend, and a lot of you are, it's one of those things you have to keep in mind. lifeguards on duty. if you see those that's what we're talking about. sunshine, low humidity. we have the chance of thunderstorms coming in as we talk about wednesday night. this line comes through, pushes in and behind it that is where the drier air starts to work back into the forecast. on thursday, a chance for showers. behind it comes that flow of cool air. we get into friday, little

degrees. the thing that would make the weekend so spectacular is if we get some decent rain tomorrow night. if we don't you get to enjoy some sunshine all the way through the weekend looking pretty nice. keep an eye on those morning lows. a little taste of fall later this weekend. emily: tom brady just held his final press conference at gillette before his suspension takes effect. erika: brady is 4:00 on saturday. before then he is hoping to get some action in thursday's final preseason game against the giants and he admits the fourth time off will be tough. >> i'm pretty positive so i'm going to use these days the best way i possibly can. i'm going to try to get ready and do everything i can so i can be at my best when i have the opportunity to play in october.
