this morning. as we look at the radar image, it looks rather impressive still. cindy: it is, though it does not look like a classic tropical system. it will develop more like the nor'easter, which we are more used to. you can seize guys are mainly clear across the area. we will see decent sunshine on your sunday before clouds thicken deeper into the afternoon. here's hermine to the south. is running into high. having a tough time moving onward -- northward. you can see tropical storm watches along the south coast, the cape, and the islands. this storm is lifting northward, and it is strengthening. it will continue to prevent northward through labor day and then really slow down.

for us, that is a slow deterioration of conditions. we will see sunshine with an increase in clouds this afternoon. the wind starts to pick up this afternoon. the northeasterly wind holds temperatures near 70 at the coast. by evening, the wind could gust between about 30 and 50 miles per hour late in the day. i want to show you the impact of hermine once it gets middle of the week. antoinette: and as you just mentioned, as hermine makes its way up the coast it's expected , to impact our weather for several days. doug: so a lot of folks on the cape are asking themselves "should i stay or should i go?" antoinette: the storm will likely bring high winds, rough surf, dangerous rip currents, as well as minor beach erosion to the area. a lot of people we talked to say they will likely cut their trip to the beach short as storm makes its way north. but some say, regardless of what mother nature brings, they're

a pair we caught up with is in town for an outdoor wedding today in martha's vineyard. >> she's like, "no, i'm good to go. whatever happens happens. no plan b. just make it happen. no matter what." >> even if the storm doesn't really get here, that's enough to keep us in. antoinette: hermine already causing ferry service cancellations for today and tomorrow. trips on tuesday and wednesday, they say, will be decided on a case-by-case basis. and of course stay with updates through the week. cleanup is now underway in north carolina after the storm pounded the coast. this was the scene from kill devil hills. the focus, to our south, now on cleaning up and getting the power back on for thousands left in the dark. but the danger is not over yet. doug: not yet. the storm is gaining strength. millions on the east coast are still at risk. >> hermine has lost its hurricane force, but it's barging up the eastern seaboard as a powerful post-tropical

that has triggered storm alerts from north carolina to new england. hermine's 60-mile-per-hour winds strong enough to shear metal from the side of this truck. and to tear this tree from the earth. gene connors: it was like an explosion in my backyard. everything went up in the air and around. >> making a holiday weekend washout for millions of would-be beach babies. along the east coast, sand bags were as close as some got to the shore. they were handing them out in new jersey as the surf kicked up, along with the wind. this beach was closed, but the boardwalk was packed as some tried to salvage one last blast of summer. >> everyone's pretending there isn't a tropical storm coming. >> we are all in denial. >> hermine has left behind a trail of destruction, forcing hundreds of thousands to make do without electricity. >> just cold water and a grill. so we make coffee, we have hardboiled eggs. >> residents of this flooded-out

rescued by boat. >> it's really frustrating, especially when you feel trapped. and there's no power. >> i've had more than enough. >> hermine is expected to get stronger as it sweeps north on sunday. expect storm surges of three to five feet at high tide and significant coastal flooding and beach erosion in some areas. of course, you can track hermine all weekend long on our wcvb app, or online at wcvb.com. antoinette: right now, a deadly hit and run under investigation in mattapan. state police police say the she was hit just after 10:30 last night near morton and canterbury streets. they say she died at the scene. the driver did take off after the crash, but police say they are no longer searching for that driver. doug: a massive fire under investigation in roslindale right now. look at those claims. boston fire officials say no one was hurt at this home on walter street. the fire started just before midnight, quickly growing to 3 alarms. the chief estimates damage at about $750,000. 5 adults were displaced. they will be staying with

this morning, a two-year-old girl is recovering after she was burned from falling into a fire pit. it happened last night in billerica, at a home on brindle road. firefighters calling the incident an accident. the deputy chief saying the adults at the home acted quickly to stop the burns, putting the girl in a bathtub with cool water. her injuries resemble second and third degree burns. antoinette: tragedy at a new hampshire fair. a child has died after a horse riding accident in lancaster. the girl was taking part in the was thrown from the horse. witnesses say the girl was responsive when she was rushed to a local hospital. but she died from her injuries yesterday. many people are left stunned and heartbroken. >> it seemed to be just one of those incidences that nothing seems to have startled the horse. a lot of younger kids were

age are not being released for now. the riding club says the shows will continue through as scheduled through tomorrow. doug: worcester police are searching for two people involved with an armed robbery on west mountain street. police say it happened around 10:45 friday night. the victims claim they were about to get in their car when two men approached them. the "telegram" reporting one suspect, armed with a gun, forced a woman to the ground. another suspect hit a man in the back of the head with a baseball bat. the men were able to get away with antoinette: sutton police are investigating several cases of vandalism across town. they found saint john's church along providence road tagged with graffiti friday morning. two cars and another building were also vandalized. the "globe" reports, this morning, the church will hold a prayer service for the vandals at the brigham hill community barn in north grafton. police say if you have any tips to give them a call. a historic morning at the vatican, where pope francis has

antoinette: it is 5:11. we are tracking hermine. the storm slowly off the mid-atlantic coast. it is still moving up along the coast and is expected to get stronger as it spins over the atlantic. cindy with the track and timing, coming up. hermine, meanwhile, leaving behind a path of destruction. doug: it was a prettylo the storm sent a huge tree crashing through his home while he was sleeping inside, bringing down power lines. 76-year-old dell collier left covered head to toe in debris as his ceiling caved in. dell collier: i was asleep. i woke up, and it was all over with. lucky does not even describe what i feel. doug: he somehow managed to escape with just cuts and bruises. the home damaged and entirely

>> now, your stormteam 5 forecast with meteorologist cindy fitzgibbon. cindy: we keep seeing the damage in florida and the carolinas. everyone asking how this will impact us, especially through the holiday weekend. cindy: we are now two thirds into the holiday weekend. pretty good so far. you will notice the wind picking up. it is moving slowly. it will be slow to get in and slow to get out. we will be talking about hermine for a while. the wind is picking up today. by evening and tonight, we are talking about gusts 30 to 50 miles per hour. that is where -- particularly the south cape, where they've had will be greatest. today is a dry day, but there's

out to the beach. here is hermine, technically called "post-tropical," but the wind is still around 60 miles per hour. it will slow down. as it does so, the wind will get stronger. here's the official track from the hurricane center. by 2:00, notices maintaining the strength around 65 miles per hour. i bit. then it starts to curve back towards the coast and lift northward again. look at the wind speed by tomorrow. that is hurricane strength at around 75 miles per hour. it is a good distance from our coastline. tuesday, wednesday, thursday, it does get a little closer and head out to sea. but as mentioned, it is a slow process. the greatest impact will be

south coast. the further north and west you get, minimal impacts. let's tell you what to expect as you step out. around 60 in boston. there is a northerly wind. it is dry with a dew point in the 50's. it will cool into the 40's, but there are some of the 50's on the some increasing clouds throughout the day, but overall partly sunny as temperatures, on into the upper 60's to low 70's. all in all, not a bad sunday. we are watching the edge of the rain and clouds with hermine kind of inching towards us. high pressure sitting to our north. this is doing a couple of things. it is blocking hermine from lifting north were too quickly, but the difference in pressure

will have gusty winds as well. tropical storm force winds extend a couple hundred miles from the center. so there are tropical storm watches for the south cape and islands. what is going to happen -- why is the strengthening? look at the water temperatures. to ourselves, they are over to ourselves, they are over 80 degrees. so we have the warm water and the sea building now. over 20 feet down this way. not much in terms of surf and wave action locally, but that will change as hermine list north. we can expect these to bill to 10 to 15 feet locally. the wind picking up today.

30, 40, to even 50 master hour along the south cape. notice that the day tomorrow, the wind gradually slows. wind tonight falls into the 50's to around 60. we go into today with clouds increasing. tonight, maybe a couple of showers. it is really during monday where we have periods of rain coming in. they will be slow to exit. so periods of what weather monday into tuesday the potential is there for showers. wet weather as hermine slowly makes an exit. temperatures in the 80's with more humid conditions. looks like mid 80's again by next weekend. more to come with hermine and a bit. doug: it will be busy over there. 5:17 now. stories we're following right now.

elderly driver lost control, setting off a chain reaction crash. four people were seriously hurt when that driver hit a fence, another car, and several pedestrians outside a concert venue. the car then plowed into a parked police cruiser, pushing it into several people who were having a picnic. the cause of the crash is under investigation. doug: president obama in china for the g-20 summit, meeting with the new british prime minister, theresa may. the president addressing the syria conflict and the fight against isis during that he says u.s. and russian negotiators are working around the clock to try to strike a deal to reduce violence in syria. cleanup is underway this morning after a 5.6 magnitude earthquake in oklahoma was felt across six other states. officials say several buildings were damaged, but none collapsed. the quake was centered near pawnee, where the older buildings buckled. experts say the quake did not cause significant damage, partly because the hard bedrock under

the worst damage. it is an old, store building. some of the outer wall has broken away and followed onto the sidewalk. doug: building inspectors have been going around to ensure that all buildings are safe before they allow people back in. fortunately, no one was hurt. antoinette: it may be slim pickings if you head out to pick apples this fall as farmers struggle with the extreme drought across new england. this year's farms aren't offering apple picking at all, choosing instead to bring those apples directly to market. experts say the bay state's crop will be about 15% to 20% below average. even before the drought, unseasonably warm temperatures in february and march were already affecting the crops. doug: no drought for out west. the athletics must hate playing against the red sox. they had another stellar night out in oakland. this one was pretty much all over in the third. the sox scored seven runs.

south coast and that is where the winds are going to be strongest. the center of the storm is lifting northward. it is lifting north a little bit and then will try to this shift westward as we get into labor day. very slowly through wednesday and into thursday before this thing gets out of our hair. a very slow process staying offshore. tropical storm watches up along the south coast cape. continue to watch hermine northward and it's running into high-pressure. the skies are mainly clear right now. 40's and 50's to around 60 degrees in boston. temperatures will sneak up close to 70 this afternoon. you'll notice the winds increasing and that is the main theme for today. stronger gusts building along the south coast fit i will talk

antoinette: as cindy mentioned, there is now a tropical storm watch for the coast of cape cod and the islands as we wait to see what hermine will do next. doug: meteorologist a.j. burnett is live in falmouth this morning where this storm is putting a damper on holiday weekend plans for many. aj: good morning. so far, so good. it's a beautiful morning out here where we are looking off to my right and seeing a little bit of sunray starting t tickle the horizon and it's going to be a great beach start to the day. i do not think it ends nearly as nice as it's going to start. hermine is expected to have the most impact on the cape of the islands. there will be high winds and squally rain. that has a lot of folks visiting saying, should i stay or should i go? we talked to a couple people

anyone who might recognize the man to give them a call. a theft investigation in plymouth. this 150-pound lobster sculpture was taken at some point early saturday morning. it was just unveiled as part of the chamber of commerce lobster crawl, featuring hand painted sculptures all over town. "the patriot ledger" reports the vandals who took it ripped up the sculpture from its bat broken shard of plaster and tile. the community is now rallying around the artist and offering to donate money for a reward fund. antoinette: what are you going to do with a lobster sculpture? doug: you cannot leave it out in the front yard because everybody knows it is stolen. antoinette: a scare on a comparable ride. -- a carnival ride. doug: several people hurt when the ride malfunctioned. the operator error that sent several people to the hospital. antoinette: five investigates

doug: welcome back. we are tracking hermine this holiday weekend. the storm slowing down off the mid-atlantic coast. that's after pounding the carolina and virginia coast and now the storm is gaining strength. it's expected to get stronger as it spins over the atlantic. cindy is standing by with their forecast. antoinette: a scare on a right at the festival in memphis. at least eight people are recovering this morning after the ride called the moonraker malfunctioned. but it is the mistake that the ride operator made that could have made the incident even worse. he accidentally released the safety restraints before the ride came to a full stop. several people on that ride say

characteristics, so it is hanging on and that area of high pressure in the north the slimming down. it is not getting this a typical feel with a typical track. here is what you can expect today. doug mentioned it's a little cool out this morning but it's going to be a dry day. by this evening, some gusts 30-50 miles per hour. unliquidated it will not -- on labor day. there is a recurrent risk. if you are venturing into the water, you definitely need to keep that in mind. there is the post tropical hermine with winds of 65 miles per hour. it is moving around 12 miles per hour and it's putting on the brakes and sitting over very warm water. that is why you're going to see

move that much. as we get into tomorrow, we look farther north and it strengthens. it is strengthening back to hurricane force winds. it is still good distance from us, but it's a large storm. tropical storm wendy extends 100 miles out from the center and that is why we have watches in the area. it will not be into wednesday before this thing kicks out of our air we have a beautiful sunrise happening. the temperature in boston is 60 degrees, but the air is dry. we are down to the 40's and 50's particularly north and west. temperatures will cop to the 60 this morning and topping around 70 this afternoon with partly sunny skies. the wind is coming in from the northeast today, so the coolest temperatures are right along
