antoinette: tracking hermine, the watches and warnings posted along the coast. timing what you can expect as it heads north. and the potential impact for vacationers and businesses on the cape. doug: and a deadly hit and run in mattapan. the new information just in . antoinette: and pope francis makes mother teresa a saint. the ceremony and her connection with boston's catholic community. >> you are watching wcvb, bosto' antoinette: and we are tracking hermine. the storm is heading our way, and it is gaining strength as it churns over the warm ocean water, but we still have some nice weather ahead before hermine arrives. it is sunday, september 4. i'm antoinette antonio. doug: and i'm doug meehan. we are in the middle of labor day weekend and we brought in cindy fitzgibbon. cindy: we have tropical storm

and hermine is spinning to our south right now. the problem is it is trying to lift north, but running into high-pressure. this thing is want to come to a halt and spin to ourselves for the next several days. look at what is happening outside. the skies are mainly clear. it is a little cool this morning with 40's and 50's and the suburbs. temperatures hold near 70 this afternoon with a mixture of sun and clouds. the winds are going to be increasing. we are talking about the when starting to pick up around noon time gusting over 20. by the evening, 40 miles an hour and that is going to continue along the south coast right into your labor day on monday. the rain is holding off certainly today and the storm is forecast to lift northward and strengthen as we get until labor day. that will allow the winds to really ramp up.

antoinette: as hermine makes its way up the coast, it's expected to impact our weather for several days. so a lot of folks on cape cod are left considering should i stay or should i go? doug: it is like a clash song. meteorologist a.j. burnett is live in falmouth this morning where many people say they actually plan to ride this out. a.j.? aj: i was wondering how long it would take to work the clash into that. starting off to a great start i it's a great one out here so far this morning. today will not end the same as its beginning. that has a lot of folks wondering if they should head home a little earlier today and cut their vacation short. we caught up with a few folks yesterday and we will talk about them in just a second. we caught up with a pair in town for an outdoor wedding yesterday.

storm pounded the coast. this was the scene from kill devil hills. the focus to our south now on cleaning up and getting the power back on for thousands left in the dark, but the danger isn't over yet. doug: the storm is gaining strength as it continues to move north and millions along the east coast are still at risk. >> hermine has lost its hurricane force, but it's barging up the eastern seaboard as a powerful postur post-tropil cyclone. winds strong enough to sheer metal from the side of this truck. and to ted the street from the earth. >> looks like an explosion in my backyard. everything went up in the air and around. >> making a holiday weekend wash out for millions of beach babies. sandbags were as close as some got to the shore. they were handing them out in new jersey as the surf kicked up

crash after 10:30 p.m. last night. the victim is an adult female. she was hit at morton and canterbury streets. she died at the scene. doug: a massive fire under investigation in roslindale right now. boston fire officials say no one was hurt at this home on walter street. the fire started just before midnight, quickly growing to 3 alarms. the chief estimates damage at about $750,000. five adults were displaced. they will be staying with friends. girl is recovering after she was burned after falling into a fire pit. it happened last night in billerica, at a home on brindle road. firefighters calling the incident an accident. the deputy fire chief says the adults at the home acted quickly to stop the burns, putting the girl in a bathtub with cool water. her injuries resemble second and third degree burns. antoinette: tragedy at a new hampshire fair. a child has died after a horse riding accident in lancaster.

horse show on friday when she was thrown from the horse. witnesses say the girl was responsive when she was rushed to a local hospital, but she died from her injuries yesterday. many people left stunned and heartbroken. >> it seemed to be just one of those incidents that nothing seemed to have startled the horse. a lot of younger kids were around and witnessed it and were extremely upset with what they saw. antoinette: the girl's name and age are not being released for the riding club says the shows will continue through as scheduled through tomorrow. doug: worcester police are searching for two people involved with an armed robbery on west mountain street. police say it happened around 10:45 friday night. the victims say they were about to get in their car when two men approached them. the telegram reporting one suspect armed with a gun forced a woman to the ground. another suspect hit a man in the back of the head with a baseball bat. the men were able to get away with a wallet and an iphone.

vandalism across town. they found st. john's church along providence road tagged with graffiti friday morning. two cars and another building were also vandalized. "the globe" reports this morning the church will hold a prayer service for the vandals at the brigham hill community barn in north grafton. police say if you have any tips to give them a call. it's a historic morning at the vatican, where pope francis has just declared mother teresa a saint. doug: thousands packing into st. peter's square as the pope canonized the nobel peace price winner in a holy mass today. the event drawing people from all over the world. mother teresa, of course, was known for her selfless dedication to the poor and needy. antoinette: the beloved nun left a lasting impression on the local catholic community, who met her during her visits to the state. she stopped by several local parishes during her last visit in 1995. mother teresa passed away just two years later. a significant earthquake rocks

cindy: tracking hermine this holiday weekend. the storm is slowing down off the mid atlantic coast, but it is still inching its way up north and is expected to get stronger as it spins over the atlantic right now. antoinette: cindy with the track and the timing coming up. hermine leaving behind a path of distraction. doug: and it was a pretty close call for an elderly veteran in florida. the storm sent a huge tree

down power lines. 76-year-old dell collier left covered head to toe in debris as his ceiling caved in. >> i was asleep. i woke up and it was all over with. >> i can't even describe what i feel. doug: collier somehow managed to escape with just cuts and bruises. his home heavily damaged and it is entirely off its foundation and may be a total loss. antoinette: hermine more wind. here it is not going to take so much to knocked down are trees. cindy: we know how dry it has been the summer and we know we are in a drought and the trees are stressed out. [laughter] antoinette: so are we. cindy: it will not take as much wind to bring down some limbs and branches and caused problems as it typically would.

beautiful. the sun is popping up now and we are going to see a little bit of it today with some increasing clouds throughout the day. in terms of what you can expect today, you will notice the wind picking up. by this evening, we're going to start to get into the wind gusts building to 50 miles an hour. elsewhere will not be as windy, but we're not expecting rain today. it is not going to be a washout tomorrow . all the while rough surf and a rip current risk. if you're taking a holiday weekend, be careful and keep that in mind. it does not look like a typical tropical system. this is not consider post-tropical, but it still has a lot of wind. the wind at the center is 60 miles per hour, but this tropical storm force winds extend 200 miles. it is only strengthening because it is sitting over the water now

over 80 degrees. this is going to allow this to strengthen as it slowly lifts northward. notice by this afternoon that it is sitting in the waters to our south. it gets closer by monday afternoon and that means the wind is going to increase during tonight and into labor day. by then, look at the winds. they're up to hurricane force. this tropical storm force winds extend a good distance from the center. as we head toward tuesday and wednesday, the thing is looking northward. it really takes the middle of the week before it gets out of our hair. if you're heading out, temperatures are little cool in the 40's and 50's. we will see a blend of sun and clouds throughout the day with those gusty winds this afternoon. they're coming off the water with a northeasterly wind and temperatures near 70 of the coast. it is really not a bad day. hermine is still good distance away here and it is running into high-pressure.

flow shifts northward and is blocking it from making much progress. we have tropical storm watches along the coast line. it is tropical storm warnings to the south. this is not only where we have the stronger winds, but we have the seas building. there's not much going on in the water in terms of surf. to the south, there is huge wave action and that is lifting northward and the speeds will build to 10-15 feet tonight and tomorrow. search. notice the winds gradually building and we get gus around 30 to 50 miles per hour. it could be higher than that by tomorrow morning. throughout the day tomorrow, the winds picking on that. it is drive-through today into tonight. as we get into your, we will see some bands for showers.

stick with us and to tuesday and it very slow for hermine to kick on out of here. we are talking about rain totals close to if not surpassing an inch. otherwise, it looks like it will be under an inch of rain fall. we could use more rainfall out of this unfortunately. lingering showers at times through wednesday with rough surf using an improvement -- and improving weather could some are a little come back by the end of the week. doug: thank you. stories we're following right now. antoinette: terrifying moments in southern california, where an elderly driver lost control, setting off a chain reaction crash. four people were seriously hurt when that driver hit a fence, another car, and several pedestrians outside a concert venue. the car then plowed into a parked police cruiser, pushing it into several people who were having a picnic. the cause of the crash is under investigation.

for the g-20 summit, meeting with the new british prime minister, theresa may. the president addressing the syria conflict and the fight against isis during that meeting. he says u.s. and russian negotiators are working around the clock to try to strike a deal to reduce violence in syria. cleanup is underway this morning after a 5.6 magnitude earthquake in oklahoma was felt across six other states. officials say several buildings were damaged, but none actually collapsed. the quake was centered near pawneere experts say the quake did not cause significant damage partly because the hard bedrock under the region absorbs the energy. fortunately, nobody was hurt. antoinette: it may be slim pickings if you head out to pick apples this fall as farmers struggle with the extreme drought across new england. this year's crop is expected to be smaller and some farms aren't offering apple picking at all , choosing instead to bring their apples directly to market.

this weekend will be a big moment for hillary clinton's campaign as bernie sanders holds his first solo campaign event for her. he will be in lebanon, new hampshire tomorrow. doug: police in portsmouth, new hampshire looking for a man seen taking money from a tip jar. surveillance video shows the man picking up his food and taking money from the tip jar at gilley's diner. police say it happened last sunday around 10:15 at night. portsmouth police are asking anyone who might recognize the man. a theft investigation in plymouth. this 150-pound lobster sculpture was taken at some point early saturday morning. it was just unveiled as part of the chamber of commerce lobster crawl, featuring hand painted sculptures all over town. the patriot ledger reports the vandals who took it, ripped up the sculpture from its base at

broken shards of plaster and tile. the community is now rallying around the artist, and offering to donate money for a reward antoinette: more sharks sightings this weekend down on the cape. swimmers were cleared from marconi beach yesterday when a lifeguard spotted a shark about 150 yards from shore. the atlantic shark conservancy's sharktivity app reporting the shark breached the water. lifeguards at coast guard beach in eastham also sent out an alert there after a shark was seen circling in front of a protected beach, about 25 yards from shore. antoinette: we are following some breaking news from mattapan. doug: a scare from a carnival ride. the operator error that sent several to the hospital. cindy: hermine making her way up the coast, 300 miles south of nantucket area the timeline of

doug: we are tracking hermine. the storm is slowing down after pounding the carolinas and virginia coast. th it spins closer to us. antoinette: a scare on a ride at a festival on memphis. at least eight people are recovering this morning after the ride called the moonraker malfunctioned. but it is the mistake that the ride operator made that could have made the incident even worse. he accidentally released the safety restraints before the ride came to a full stop. several people on that ride say they held on to whatever they could grab.
