cindy fitzgibbon. windy when we came in and just a drizzle, like a wind-blown -- >> kind of a raw september feel out there. we're still dealing with lingering effects of hermine. we'll have wind today. the sustained winds with hermine are up around 65 miles per hour right now as it moves to the west about 100 miles south of our coastline. so the impacts are lessening overall, but around it, we're talking about thesend and drizzle that are still pivoting through the area and kind of what you see is what you get today. this is going to be the story throughout the day, periods of mist and drizzle. the winds are gusting, but 20 to 30 miles an hour instead of winds gusting over 40 miles per hour that we had yesterday. and those winds even up on the north shore gusting to 26 miles per hour. also some fog if you're heading out the door. that may slow you down. visibility about a mile and a

three miles in boston. look at these raw temperatures. upper 50's worcester. lower 60s boston. and with the wind blowing, it's going to feel cooler than that. plan on periods of mist and drizzle throughout the early part of the afternoon. by late afternoon, we could see a break or two of sunshine. temperatures in the low to mid 70's. you want to dress for that. in the waters right now to our south, we're still talking about pretty rough surf. and you can see down here along the south coast, new bedford area, we're coastline. want to take you there now and talk about the impacts of lingering hermine along our coastline. doug meehan standing by live. >> we're in new bedford. the conditions at least where we're standing not too, too bad. the wind is up. the flags are straight out. we're in a protected area and we seem to be doing okay. as a matter of fact, i can see stars above us. not the case yesterday when we

hermine was felt all around new bedford. conditions rough enough yesterday to close beaches and suspend ferry service from here out to the islands. down on the cape, the steamship canceling service. also service to martha's vineyard and nantucket will operate on a trip-by-trip basis. boaters urged to use extreme caution. >> so we're not sure exactly conditions we're going to see maybe wor definitely, if you don't have to go out, don't go out. it's the safest way. >> the coast guard, by the way -- the coast guard, by the way, also asking boat owners to make sure that mooring lines are secure and make sure to label those kayaks and personal watercraft with name and phone numbers on it in case they break free so they don't have to search for somebody if they find the boat. they'll think somebody is missing. live in new bedford this

good all the way down to the connector. trains and buses starting the morning on schedule. >> a driver is in custody after this crash in boston. the woman rear-ended a state police cruiser on interstate 93 south near exit 18 in dorchester. the crash happened around 1:00 this morning. nobody was seriously hurt here. and the driver was given a sobriety committees and then taken into custody. right now, both sides of a controversial body camera program for police officers in boston are preparing their arguments ahead of a hearing today. >> and the eyeopener's john atwater is live in boston with a preview of what could be a tense court hearing, john. >> emily, the pilot program was supposed to start last week. the union filed a temporary injunction to block it. so that has led to some delays here. the program was supposed to be voluntary. the patrolman's union reached an agreement with the department in

assigned the cameras. the plan calls for 100 officers from different districts to wear the cameras for six months. that was supposed to start september 2. the date has been pushed to september 12. the officers would also get $500 for taking part in the program. now, the commissioner could be called to testify at that hearing today, and that hearing could go into tomorrow. live in boston this morning, john atwater, wcvb newscenter 5. >> thank you. right now, boston police are looking for the s sexual assault in the city. police say it happened around 4:00 in the morning yesterday morning. the greenway. police say the victim was walking toward the greenway carousel when she says she was attacked by a man she did not know. that suspect ran off after the attack. framingham state university campus police officer is going to be before a judge later today. wilter dormevil is charged with committing a lewd act on campus. fsu's command staff was notified

miles an hour closer into the city of boston. this is all courtesy of hermine, still spinning to our south by about 100 miles. the winds right now are about 65 miles an hour with this. notice what happens by this afternoon. the winds come down to around 60 and it starts tracking toward the west. it's moving a little farther away from us today, and then as we get toward tonight and tomorrow, starts to turn more northward. it's weakening more. that trend will continue wednesday night and kick out of our hair on thursday. is weakening. the lingering impacts will be weaker. wind gusts between 20 and 30 miles per hour. strongest along the coastline. a few showers, drizzle at times, but rough surf and a rip current risk at the beaches. keep that in mind. seas have come way down but kicking up three to five feet near the coastline. the water higher to our south. 10-foot waves to our south. the rip current risk is going to remain high through today and even into tomorrow as well.

see the winds right now are gusting 20, 25 miles per hour across a good portion of the area. but strong around block island where we're getting gusts to 30 and even to the north we're getting gusty winds as well. so it's kind of a damp kind of raw feel for all of you this morning. we go through lunchtime and the strongest winds are going to start to focus closer to the center of hermine down toward the connecticut coastline, long island. we're talking about winds gusting 20, 30 miles an hour throughout the day. not nearly as windy as yesterday. this is all a function of hermine still spinning back the cl areas of mist and drizzle, some light showers scattered about and the fog, too. visibility down under a couple of miles by the north shore, running three miles in boston. stepping out, the temperatures in the upper 50's and lower 60s although upper 60's on the cape this morning. and look at your day here. the clouds, the periodic mist and drizzle, by late this afternoon, we may see a few breaks of sun, but i think overall the clouds will dominate today. have the wet weather gear with you. looking for a high of 72 boston.

mist and drizzle continuing. by late in the day, there may be a break or two of sunshine. winds kicking up sustained 15, 20, with higher gusts up to 20 or 30 miles an hour. down here along the south coast, you can see in the new bedford area, we're still getting some higher surf down this way, and that's where we find doug meehan this morning. he is keeping an eye on the coastline. good morning, doug. >> hi, cindy. you can actually see some of that banding you were just talking about in the skyline behind us here, some breaks, but also still some ver d bedford. yesterday, it was rocking down here. there were problems away from the coast as well. trees weakened by weeks of drought taken down by hermine's strong winds. those winds creating domino-like effects. winds taking down trees and then the trees taking down the power lines. we have a big tree in newton that came crashing down onto the roof of a home, punching a hole right in its door. the inside of these cracked trees are almost completely hollow and rotten.

grieving, but they are very strong, and this morning they are speaking out. this crash happened over the weekend. johnette sims was killed saturday night when a car ran her over in mattapan. the driver, anthony buchanan, was drunk and took off. he later turned himself in. sims was 46 years old. she was a mother of two. as you can imagine, her family is devastated. >> we cannot ever get her back. we can't ever see her again. and we are hurting so hard inside. >> there's just no words right now. it's still a shock. >> despite their pain, sims' family tells us they forgive that driver. he faces several charges when he appears in front of a judge here later this morning. live in boston, john atwater, wcvb newscenter 5. >> john, thank you. right now, boston's arson squad is investigating an explosive device which was found on a

device in a beer bottle similar to a molotov cocktail. police aren't sure if the officer's house was indeed targeted. this was discovered yesterday morning. you can see it left a burn mark on the grass. >> right now, a suspicious death investigation underway in new hampshire. danville police say a person was found dead at a caramel drive home monday night. the attorney general's office says the death is suspicious but gave no further information. state police remained at that scene overnight. what police say they found in connecticut and the football player behind this kind gesture has another surprise for the boy in that photo. his gift and how the experience has changed the boy's life. >> we're following breaking news this morning in boston. one person is in custody after rear-ending a massachusetts state police cruiser on interstate 93 south. no one seriously hurt there. hermine weakening this morning.

>> driver is in custody after this crash in boston. a woman rear-ended a state police cruiser on interstate 93 south, the southeast expressway, near exit 18 in dorchester. the crash happening at 1:00 this morning. nobody seriously hurt. the driver was given a sobriety test and then taken into custody. >> the boston police body cam program the subject of a special hearing today. >> newscenter 5's john atwater in boston with the continued fallout. >> well, randy, those body cameras really take center stage at that hearing later today. this program has run into some delays because the union has some questions about the cameras and filed an injunction to stop the program. the plan called for 100 officers from differing districts to wear the cameras for six months. that program did not start september 2nd as planned. september 12 is the target date.

president obama. it was an insult that led to obama canceling a meeting between the two leaders. president rodrigo duterte says his strong comments were not meant to come across as a personal attack. he made the remarks monday before flying to laos, where he will attend a regional summit. he and president obama were scheduled for a private meeting. that has now been postponed. >> conservative activist phyllis schlafly has passed away. the outspoken woman who helped defeat the equal rights amendment in the the age of 92. she rose to fame with her self-published manifesto for the far right, "a choice not an echo." she had been battling cancer. >> boston police are asking for help to track down a suspect wanted for a sexual assault on the greenway. police say the victim was walking toward the greenway carousel just after 4:00 monday morning when she was attacked. the suspect then ran away. >> hermine is being blamed for making this fire more difficult

this rhode island mansion. the oceanfront property in narragansett belongs to the late pawtucket red sox owner james skeffington. firefighters from several surrounding towns actually were called to help fight this fire. no one was hurt. >> state and local officials are set to make an announcement regarding offshore wind. governor baker will join the energy and environmental affairs secretary and congressman bill keating today in new bedford. they'll also join wind developers for a tour of a wind research vessel. >> p marijuana bust at a day-care center. westhaven police found 600 marijuana plants growing in the backyard of this center, which is licensed. they were alerted by state child care inspectors who were denied access behind a tall wooden fence that housed the plants. the facility was shut down. >> bill cosby could learn when he will go to trial for sexual assault trials. cosby will be back in a philadelphia courtroom today. the 79-year-old is accused of drugging and molesting a woman

60 degrees as you're heading out in worcester. lower 60's boston up through the north shore. plymouth out to the cape running in the mid to upper 60's. the northeasterly wind will be active throughout the day. gusts over 20 miles an hour on the cape and down on the vineyard. wind gusting to 30 around block island and even to the north we're getting wind gusts 20, close to 30 miles per hour on the short shore back too worcester all in response to hermine still spinning 100 miles to our south right now. but it's in the process of weakening and it's going to be pushing farther westward. through noontime, look where the strongest wind gusts are going to be. closer to the connecticut coastline and long island. we're talking about wind gusts throughout the day 20, 30 miles an hour. we have rough seas and surf at the south. at the beaches today, we're talking about seas two to five feet. but the waters to our south, 10 feet offshore. rip current risk will remain

through the morning hours. periods of mist and drizzle throughout the day with late-day brightening in the sky. temperatures no higher than the low to mid 70's in most areas. and you see throughout the day we hang onto a lot of cloud cover. not looking at widespread rain, but a shower could pop up, move through your town at any time, and that's going to continue into tonight as well. what we're waiting for is hermine to get out of our hair, but she's doing it very slowly. rainfall amounts under 1/4 inch for most of us, and we're going to drop down into the overnight lows tonight. hermine is lingering to our south tomorrow. doesn't move a whole lot. it's going to be thursday before this kicks out. once it does, the front will bring in more humidity and warmer temperatures. a run up toward 90 degrees coming up on friday. could be a thunderstorm around on the weekend. 80's both saturday and sunday. chance of a thunderstorm on sunday. that will likely cool us back down into the 70's by early next week. but a couple more days here with
