>> good morning. it is friday, september 9. i'm emily riemer. >> and i'm randy price. at 4:30, shots fired outside a worcester pub. chaos at the scene there and the injuries this morning. >> literally birds falling out of the sky. >> a bizarre mystery in dozens of birds in one neighborhood. >> a decision expected on the boston police body cam program. >> first checking in with mike in for cindy this morning. it is muggy out there. >> muggy, patchy fog. not quite as bad as yesterday morning. still a little patchy fog. but another one of those thick nights trying to sleep. temperatures already still into the 70's. we didn't cool off that much. a lot of gray skies out there.

you see scattered showers over nantucket, out to the west we're seeing a few sprinkles. but it's not amounting to too much. it's gray this morning. there's actually a frontal boundary to the west. this will come slipping through. you won't notice it much. ahead of it, it is going to be a warm one for today. let me show you what's happened. see the gray skies around 8:00 this morning? this afternoon, sunshine is out, and that's allowed things to warm up across the area. yes, it looks like we could see temperatures when they cool down and the threat of rain this weekend. now let's check on the traffic on friday morning. good morning, kevin. >> good morning, mike. off to a good start. work crews we'll have to mention. masspike eastbound so far so good. overnight work crews are blocking the ramp on the

everyone is being detoured to route 9. you'll have to work your way around that. 93 southbound, work crews, somerville towards the o'neill tunnel, northbound tunnel as well. southbound 93, ramp to exit 20, the masspike and south station will be shut down until 5:00 a.m. as well. keep that in mind heading to the airport or elsewhere. >> thank you. breaking overnight, gunfire erupting outside a pub sending people scrambling. >> let's get to the eo scene in worcester with what we know right now. antoinette? >> and, emily, worcester police detectives let the scene within the last five minutes. witnesses describe the very frightening scene and this morning we know that two people are suffering from gunshot wounds. let's go ahead and take a look at some video in from overnight. you can see police out here collecting evidence outside gallagher's pub on west boylston street.

heard the gunfire. they took off running. one friend said he'd been shot in the leg. another person was shot but it's unclear how badly he was injured. two ambulances left the scene. all of this happening just around 11:30 last night. we are working to get more information on the victims' conditions. at this point, no word on any suspects, arrests or possible motives for this shooting. we're live in worcester this morning. antoinette antonio, wcvb newscenter 5. also breaking, north korea confirms it has conducted a nuclear warhead explosion. the country says it's an effort to counter u.s. hostility. that test triggered a 5.0 magnitude earthquake yesterday, and it's the fifth nuclear test explosion according to south korea. south korea's president is calling it an act of fanatic restlessness that defies the u.s. and the united nations. >> three members of the massachusetts state police are

the department says the three work in the armory and the investigation is focused on the transfer of surplus weapons to a vendor. the attorney general of the commonwealth is also looking into this case. >> now a disturbing mystery in a boston neighborhood. birds, more than 40 of them, just falling from the sky, and this morning there's concern those animals may not be the only ones in danger. that deadly discovery was made yesterday along bakerfield street in dorchester. at least 46 birds sidewalks and lawns. nearly 40 of them dead. the birds, all grackles, are not the only animals to fall victim. someone's pet cat also got sick and was euthanized. >> we don't know what's going on. could be a virus that they got very quickly. it could be an intentional poisoning. it could be something that was introduced into them that was nonintentional but harmed them. >> testing on the birds and that cat is underway. boston's public health commission says there is no

situation. >> right now, boston police are awaiting a ruling on their controversial body camera program being challenged by the city's largest police union. john atwater at the courthouse in boston where the decision is expected today. john? >> randy, we're expecting that decision in just a few hours. we will learn if this pilot program will begin on monday. now, of course, this program has been delayed because of concerns coming from the union. the patrolman's union is fighting the plan that would force 10 cameras. but just yesterday, the department announced that eight department leaders, including superintendent and chief william gross, will wear them. they are not part of the union. >> it's a big statement they're making. they're out with the public a lot, interacting with the community, and i think they're putting a stake in the ground that we're committed to the program. >> it became an issue because no officers volunteered to wear the

the cameras to officers. the judge making the final call later this afternoon. >> commitment 2016. two state lawmakers will be out after primary losses. tim toomey lost his primary to challenger mike connolly. and marcos devers is out to juana matias. only 57 legislative races remain de much heavier. in the race for the white house, republican donald trump will hold events in washington, d.c., and florida today. yesterday, he and democrat hillary clinton traded jabs on national security, and that's after the two appeared at the same foreign policy forum wednesday night. clinton has no scheduled events today. running mate tim kaine will be in virginia. bill clinton and massachusetts senator elizabeth warren will stump for her in philadelphia.

announced. it turned out to be ron tarentino iii on quick leave from the army. last night's event marked the inaugural top cop game honoring the slain officer. tarentino was shot to death during a traffic stop in may. his wife says she has been overwhelmed by the support from the two towns her husband served. >> we just loved your letters, phone calls. just everything to support our family and to put on an event like this is a huge undertaking. >> after the game, the auburn rockets pulled out the win on a late touchdown. coaches say it was obviously a win for both sides. a plane for europe to orlando forced to land in boston. >> the problem onboard was one passenger and a mystery in russia. a river turning blood red here. what some say may be behind

>> the city of worcester taking new action as the drought gets worse around the state. sky 5 in worcester yesterday, one of 10 reservoirs that supply the city's drinking water. as you can see, it's dry. there's a mandatory ban outdoor watering. restaurants cannot bring you water unless you ask for it. colleges are asking students to conserve water on campus. worcester buying water from the state water resources authority costing $1.7 million a month. that's pretty staggering. >> more communities are getting involved with this. >> think about it. we had a fairly significant tropical system that got within a few miles and we couldn't get rain. this drought continues. let me show you where the drought index, drought monitor is showing up right now. you can see how most of the

worcester is running 8 1/2 inches dry. boston running almost 9 inches dry so far for the year. we need water. how about this morning? a few sprinkles. a lot of cloud cover this morning. we had one spot over nantucket that's moved its way over the ocean. inland, we're seeing scattered showers if you're north of manchester, the concord area. it stretches out her there's a cold front. i think actually as we head to the afternoon, we'll warm things up. then we'll see kind of dry weather. the weekend does have a couple of opportunities saturday and on sunday, but not a washout of a weekend. starting out your morning this morning, we have temperatures already in the 70's and kind of a muggy start to the day as well. in boston, temperature holds at 73 degrees. winds out of the west-southwest at 7 miles per hour.

yep, it's a muggy start out there this morning. yesterday, we had the dew point in the oppressive range. today is down a little bit. saturday and sunday, we bring it down to the sticky category. a little bit better. that will set us up for a chance of showers. today, 9:00 this morning, a lot of gray skies around. look what happens this afternoon. sunshine. that's why the temperature will be warming up so dramatically across the area. looks like another day of temperatures near 90 degrees after those morning clouds give way to sunshine this 86 to 92 degrees the high. tonight, partly cloudy skies. there's a slight risk of showers. 62 to 68 degrees. let's talk about what's happening. we have less humid weather settling in for saturday. out to the west, see how this is coming in? we have a frontal boundary. it means we'll have a chance of scattered showers. looks like on saturday evening. this one may give us a chance of scattered showers or thunderstorms on sunday morning. but i really want to point out this is not a washout of a weekend. just a couple of opportunities there.

there's your chance, a few showers on saturday. and then on sunday, a chance of some morning thunderstorms. look what happens after that. less humid weather moves in. temperatures in the 70's. another cold front on wednesday gives us a chance of some thunderstorms. and behind that, ooh, this is fall. high temperatures 70's, lows in the 50's. cool, cool stuff sitting out there. how are things going, kevin? >> so far so good. we need that rain. i've been flying over some of these reservoirs. so low. we'll get rain in a couple of days here, hopefully. >> not enough. no drought-busters. >> let's check the roadways. we're looking pretty good. overnight work crews on the 93 southbound bridge have picked up. they're backing up towards that somerville stretch. they've got a little bit more work to do. nonetheless, they're in the process of picking up. they're picking up that ramp 93 south inside the o'neill tunnel.

if you're taking the mass pike, all exits are shut down exit 22, copley square. do expect it if you're heading out the door. all lanes detoured off at copley. emily? >> thanks. drivers caught in the act in west bridgewater. ce cracking down on distracted driving. according to the cdc, eight people are killed in the u.s. every day because of distracted driving. and at the heart of the problem are cell phones. west bridgewater police are looking to stop that. a lookout calls in a distracted driver as police wait 1/2 mile down the road. 150 people were pulled over in total yesterday. 63 given citations. but police tell us the real goal is to educate. >> if it helps this much and

with that. >> if it's for safety, then that's fine. >> i just wasn't aware that that wasn't okay. but now i know. >> in the last year, two people in the town have driven through homes while texting and driving. >> right now, a man is in custody after his behavior forced a british airways jetliner to land in boston. the pilots of the 777 reached out to air traffic control at logan airport in boston on the way to orlando from london. >> we do not have him restrained. his behavior is highly unpredictable. >> this morning, that 24-year-old man from scotland is on his way back to the u.k. prosecution is a possibility for him. the pilot says he was being abusive toward crew members. the man was met by state police and u.s. custom agents. the pilot never declared an emergency. >> new this morning --

response to racism. several people of color were denied vacation requests because of availability but would see the same dates later. they are adjusting their policy so dates are blocked off. >> your economy this monday morning. wells fargo facing $185 million in fines for opening millions of illegal accounts. and more than 5300 employees have been fired there. regulars say accounts without customers' knowledge in order to meet aggressive sales goals. the san francisco-based bank opened more than two million unauthorized accounts since 2011. check of the markets -- asian shares mostly low overnight taking cues from the european central bank. stock futures here are down. today oil prices dipped following a report on a drop in fuel stockpiles. >> new this morning --

subsidized health insurance premiums. neighborhood health plan premiums will rise an average of 21% for massachusetts health connector customers, but that's only if you want to keep the plan giving access to boston hospitals. the connector does offer other plans with lower costs, but the network of hospitals is different. your trending stories now. a big mystery in russia as a river suddenly turns bright red. check this out. people reported seeing changes to tol environmental experts it could have been caused by leakage from a nearby chemical plant but have yet to confirm that. >> shocking loss for tennis star serena williams. for the second year in a row, her bid to make history ended in the semifinals of the u.s. open. she was undone by karolina pliskova last night. williams has been battling to win 23 majors, more than any other player in the open era.

>> 4:54. we have breaking news in your early news to go. >> two people are injured, suffering gunshot wounds in the city of worcester. this happened around 11:30 outside gallagher's pub on west boylston people. two people were walking when they heard the gunfire. they took off running and then one of their friends said he'd been shot in the leg. another person was also shot. it's unclear how badly he was hurt. >> investigators were back drive three days after the killing. the victim identified as 51-year-old jo-anne boucher was found monday, and it's still unclear how she died. >> police say that a blown tire likely caused the deadly crash in merrimac, massachusetts. state police say the driver lost control and rolled into the median. two people were killed. four other people inside were hurt. it does not appear that they were wearing seat belts. >> former new england mob boss

to murder charges. he appeared in court yesterday. he and paul weadick charged with killing steven disarro. if convicted both could get the death penalty. >> a prep school facing a federal lawsuit. the parents of a phillips exeter academy student say the school was wrong to kick him out after he had sex with another student, and they say that they were told their son leave for a semester, but could return over certain conditions. but they say administrators changed their minds and withdrew him completely. phillips exeter says there wasn't any contractual promise. >> a suspect is dead, another student hurt after a school shooting in texas. police say the 14-year-old shooter turned the gun on herself yesterday after shooting another girl inside her high school in the town of alpine. law enforcement was delayed by unrelated threats called in

to be okay. a ruling is expected today on the controversial dakota access pipeline. north dakota's governor has activated 100 national guard troops in case of any violence following that decision. a judge will decide whether to grant the native american tribe's challenge to the pipeline. earlier this week, a judge granted a temporary restraining order against construction on land that is sacred to that tribe. >> successful rescue in italy after several peo the french alps. the cars stopped working near mont blanc yesterday after two crossed lines. helicopters rescued the people as others were brought down safely in unstuck cars. 33 people spent the night and were pulled out in the morning. >> speeding 89 miles an hour downhill in a car is scary

breeze. this is within a few degrees of the record high. in boston, the record high for today is 93 degrees. when did we set it? last year. remember last year, september, it was so hot and humid. it kept the summer going. as far as the cape is concerned, westerly breeze, a little cooler. nantucket only 75 for a high temperature. here's what i mean by a few sprinkles. if you look carefully, you see a couple, one over nantucket, a couple sitting out here. we have a cold front c it's 90 years. we're still talking about temperatures in the 80's. so as this line approaches us, just isn't much working for it. so we're not looking at too much rain, maybe a sprinkle or two. that's about it. behind it, we start to get clearing skies back in here. your weekend a little unsettled. saturday starts off with less humid weather in play. then we get a chance of scattered showers as we talk about on saturday out to the west in the morning and also a
