summer, does it not? >> it still does. a year ago it was hot in september as well. just a continuation of that. we tied a record yesterday at 93 degrees. this morning we've got a few showers out there. i wish i could talk about more rain than this. it's glorified sprinkles at this point. we're seeing a nice shower across martha's vineyard, nantucket. i don't think it will hit the cape. you're seeing a few sprinkles. to the north we're seeing a few light showers. steadiest is up around manchester. that is looking like pretty lit we'll see scattered showers this morning. then mostly cloudy skies. i think the cloud cover will break up a bit. we'll get sunshine this afternoon. if you look off to the west, we may see a new round of showers develop late this afternoon. for most of us, it's this morning you're running into sprinkles, not a lot of sunshine, but a little bit in here. a better chance we'll see showers and thunderstorms around lunchtime tomorrow. overnight tonight, the skies will be clearing away, but the humidity is back with us. temperatures right now into the

we'll continue that pace throughout the day. in boston, we'll top off with temperatures in the mid 70's. they're not going to move courtesy of easterly winds. high temperatures today climbing into the 80's. i'll show you when high temperatures are only in the 60's coming up in my seven-day forecast in a few moments. >> the patriots will open their season tomorrow without rob gronkowski. >> the team confirming gronk won't travel to arizona. the patriots have ruled the tight end out for tomorrow night with gronk tweaking his hamstring at practice back on august 15. he left with a trainer. didn't play any of the preseason games. now in his seventh year, he hasn't played a full season since 2011. we've got the lineman nate solder and jonathan cooper not

on a train at andrew square and started threatening other riders. the victim tried to take a video when he assaulted her and knocked her phone to the ground. police arrested him yesterday when they caught up with him at andrews square stop. >> fire investigators are looking for the cause of this house fire in holliston. holliston fire tweeting out this photo from the scene. you can see those flames were raging throughout the home on mayflower landing just around 1:00 this morning. the new construction. no one was hurt. a woman is recovering after getting hit by a car in ashland. the 18-year-old from milford was crossing pleasant street around 8:00 when she was hit. she was flown to a worcester hospital with serious injuries. the 24-year-old driver is cooperating with the investigation. turn them off and do not recharge them. that is the warning this morning

federal safety experts say the risk of explosion or fire is too great. >> as newscenter 5's mary saladna explains, the warning comes as samsung prepares for a huge recall. >> the consumer products safety commission advising the hundreds of thousands of americans who have bought the samsung galaxy note 7 to power them down and stop charging or using the device. >> introducing the all-new sam sang galaxy note 7 instances of fire, including a florida man who claims his jeep caught fire while charging his phone. >> it was surprising to me how quick the dash caught on fire. >> the problem is likened to hover board fires. >> super cheap batteries. everyone was trying to get them to market as fast as possible to christmas. this time around, it's not that samsung was trying to rush this to market, but they ended up

>> samsung has not issued an official government recall of the galaxy note 7. that's prompting government action. on top of an extraordinary warning from the faa, which is telling passengers to not turn on or charge these devices onboard an aircraft. >> this is a serious thing. you put something that creates fire and noxious fumes on an airplane? that's as dangerous as it gets. >> faa tests show what large shipments of lithium ion the consumer product safety commission is working with samsung to announce a formal recall. it will have guidelines for customers telling them what to do with those bad phones. we're live in boston tonight. mary saladna, wcvb newscenter 5. >> a group was protesting safety issues at the pilgrim nuclear plant in plymouth. they stayed inside the building and wouldn't come out. police arrested three of them

>> police union request denied. a judge ruling boston police's body camera program can move forward. david bienick with when it will start. >> at a church in roxboro, the judge's ruling gives the body camera program the go ahead. >> it's lousy that it's laid out in the court versus the union. i don't like to say it's a >> following the two-day hearing, the judge criticized the police union for insisting the camera program be voluntary, then telling its members not to voluntary. the judge wrote it would be unfair when the injury is self-inflicted. >> we hope they will take the time between now and monday to reconsider that approach and to embrace the pilot program.

president says he's disappointed by the ruling but promised to work to make the body cameras a success, saying, "i believe what we're going to find is that the body-worn cameras will highlight the good work that is done by the members of the union every day." >> until the pilot program begins, we're still holding our breath. >> community activists, who support the body cameras, say they'd still like to see one change in policy so that officers must write incident reports before viewing their camera's video. >> as opposed to watching a de not see in that moment and using that as a reason for use of force, something of that nature. >> police in providence, rhode island, ran their own pilot program earlier this year. this week the city told me it was a success. now providence is looking for federal funding to keep the cameras rolling. in boston, david bienick, wcvb newscenter 5. >> so where does boston stand on the body camera issue compared to other big cities around the country? new york and philadelphia both have already started testing cameras in pilot programs.

in 2014. los angeles is a lot further along. 860 cameras in use right now. but its city council approved a five-year plan to give them to nearly every officer, 7,000 of them. chicago has 2,000 cameras on the street. a pilot program began last year has expanded to seven police districts. that city is under fire because officers involved in the chase and shooting death of paul o'neal this summer were wearing cameras, but ty the fatal shot. >> worcester police have released the name of the man who was shot and killed outside of a bar there. 21-year-old jeffrey lavoile of grafton was killed outside of gallagher's pub early yesterday morning. a 20-year-old from worcester was also shot but is recovering. police are still looking for the gunman. >> the headmaster of a prestigious braintree prep school is facing charges.

have sex with an undercover detective for money. detectives arranged to meet the 46-year-old at a mcdonald's in worcester. they say bliss showed up with hundreds of dollars in his pocket. school officials haven't said what this means for his position. he is due back in court next month. a registered sex offender from new hampshire is accused of exposing himself to children in massachusetts. officers arrested 30-year-old jacob mobley-hall near lexington high school, allly police say there have been several reports of this happening this week. the manchester man faces several counts of open and gross lewdness. >> right now, a warning to pet owners in boston as investigators try to figure out what killed several birds there. we told you about this earlier in the week about sick and dying birds found along bakersfield street in dorchester. now we've learned that 12 of those birds have died, 35 others were sick and are being tested.

vehicles, 120,000 of them, after brake fluid leaked onto circuit boards in some cars, triggering a fire. the recall involves some 2015 through 2017 murano suv's and maximas. the antilock warning brake will stay on for 10 seconds after startup. if you see that happen, get out of your car and call your dealer right a way. a volkswagen bleeded guilty. the german automaker has admitted to installing software on 500,000 vehicles in the u.s. to pass emissions tests. he faces up to five years in prison when sentenced in january. >> now, the storm team 5 forecast. >> it's saturday morning.

skies. 72 degrees. an easterly breeze. that breeze will keep things steady by the shoreline. inland will be warmer. here's the dew point holding about mid 60. yesterday at this time, it was in the low 70's. so today we're in this uncomfortable area. tomorrow we stay there. wait till you see what happens on monday and tuesday. humidity drops off. sunshine will be back. gorgeous day coming our way. we need some rain. there's a little bit showing up on radar. the emphasison to the south, there's scattered showers cutting across the islands. just sprinkles anywhere else. as you look north and west, there's a line of sprinkles just out west of 495 at this point. will it hold together and get to the city? maybe. i don't think you'll have to use your windshield wipers. there's no lightning and thunder. to the west, there's a warm front trying to lift northward. humidity will be coming up tonight. it will be muggy out there. out to the west, look at that

about lunchtime tomorrow. one thing people have been talking about, the rag weed is way high. dry weather, you see what happens. today we're in the medium category. with the sunshine on monday, you'll notice it, throat getting sore, nose running a bit, because of the pollen out there. i think the dry weather from the summer is going to be one of the other reasons it's going to be such a bad pollen season as we head to the fall. headed for the boston heart walk from 9:00 temperatures in the 70's, a sprinkle possible, but it won't slow the walkers down. easterly winds at 5 to 10 miles an hour and hosted by emily riemer. let's talk about these showers. gray skies around. hit and miss showers at best. there may be new showers off to the west. they don't get organized. stays muggy overnight tonight. tomorrow, watch what happens. 11:00 in the morning, line of showers here. about noon it's cutting through the middle part of the state. by the afternoon it's pushing

>> a connecticut mobster who authorities believe knows something about the biggest art heist in u.s. history is now in the hospital. robert gentile fell while awaiting trial in a rhode island jail. his lawyer says he is in bad shape. gentile's trial on weapons charges was supposed to begin on tuesday, but that has been postponed. prosecutors believe that he has key information about the still-unsolved 1990 theft from boston's isabella stewart gardner museum. >> move over, weird al. barb streisand has put her feelings about donald trump into a song. at an lgbt fundraiser for hillary clinton yesterday, the singer performed a parody of the song "send in the clowns." she replaced the lyrics with choice words about the republican nominee. she managed to work in questions about trump's wealth and his decision not to release his tax returns.

good morning. this is newscenter 5's eyeopener. >> good morning! happy saturday morning to you. i'm doug meehan. >> i'm antoinette antonio along with mike wankum this morning. we all get excited when we see a little bit of green on that radar. >> usually if we had rain on a weekend -- >> oh, man. >> but, really, this is not much. >> we need it so much. >> it's a sprinkle or two. that's what it's looking like. this will wind down. we have a better chance of seeing a line of showers and thunderstorms tomorrow around lunchtime. right now, just a few sprinkles sitting us through the morning. much less of a threat through the afternoon. the cloud cover has holes in it already. we'll see lots of holes in the cloud cover and plenty of sunshine breaking through as well. biggest rain event is happening once again out over the ocean headed towards martha's vineyard, nantucket. a few sprinkles over the cape right now. as you look up to the north, heaviest showers just off to the west of manchester. look at the trend. they fade away. it's really just glorified sprinkles at this point. as we head to the morning, it's

the september 11 terror attacks. a special ceremony in natick friday to recognize those who sacrificed so much that day. they took part in a stair climb. today in foxboro, they are remembering the victims of 9/11 and honoring a local hero. cindy mcginty lost her mike, in the attack. >> the new york police department remembering the victims of 9/11 with a parade. thousands gathering to remember the police officers who died in those attacks. the walk began on wall street and ended at the nypd police memorial wall. marchers held a memorial service at the end of the parade. lawmakers on capitol hill marked a 9/11 anniversary with a moment

and we have been doing that a lot. during july, we hit it 12 times. during the month of august, we hit it seven times. now we hit it one more time in september. it was a slow ramp-up. once we got going, we really got going. one thing we also had, we not only had the heat. we had dry conditions out there. we have extreme drought conditions over a large part of the area. boston running over 9 inches dry for the year. worcester a good 8 1/2-plus. we need water. where is it? that's all you're seeing right now. a few sprin down to the south, we're seeing showers cutting through. the only thing that's going to hit is the islands. most of it will be falling out over the ocean. inland, a few sprinkles trending the last three hours, diminishing a little bit. i don't think we'll see too much more out of that. a few sprinkles out there this morning. then we have to wait until tomorrow afternoon when some areas out to the west start to get a little more active coming this direction. some strong thunderstorms by chicago, st. louis. we'll have a round of thunderstorms our way around lunchtime tomorrow.

for the zero prostate cancer walk run this morning, hosted by harvey leonard, you can give him grief about spot showers. temperatures into the 70's. great cause once again this morning. think about making it a beach day? water temperatures are nice. mostly cloudy. could be a spot shower out there, but i don't think that will be a big threat. high tide coming in just about a half hour. surf running flat, a big change from last weekend. last weekend we ha churned up. this weekend, everything's flat. here's what happens. around 9:00, still seeing a few spot showers out there. not much. gray skies. gray skies, by the way, will have holes in it. we'll get to sunshine. we head to this afternoon. could be a new area of showers that tries to develop out to our west. i think really for most of us today, it is a dry day. just a little more cloud cover than we had going on from yesterday. overnight, skies clear away, but, boy, the humidity's coming back. we have a muggy night. then we watch for tomorrow. this is the map at 11:00 tomorrow morning. you'll see what happens.

the pittsfield area. marches eastward. should be arriving into worcester and boston noon to 1:00 in the afternoon. then it punches its way through to the south. it is one line that will come through. you may have to move inside a few minutes, then go back right outside. behind it, the skies clear away, the humidity drops, and we have got some beautiful temperatures headed into our direction. so something to look forward to. otherwise, for today, look for high temperature a little cooler at the shoreline. in the 70's. in many spots, not quite as warm as yesterday, but within 5 or 6 degrees of what we saw yesterday. over the cape today, you'll be seeing temperatures into the upper 70's to 80 degrees. here's your seven-day forecast. it resolves around a real change in the weather pattern, because once we get through this threat of some showers in here tomorrow, drier air moves in monday and tuesday, sunshine, low humidity. wednesday, a round of showers. that's the beginning of a new

targeted area before dawn yesterday. the next round is scheduled for tomorrow morning. >> a settlement is reached between exeter hospital and new hampshire and the staffing agency that placed a lab tech convicted in a hepatitis-c outbreak. david kwiatkowski is serving time after swapping painkillers in syringes with his blood. he worked at seven hospitals before being placed at exeter. a teenager arrested in the theft of this 150-pound lobster sculpture in plymouth. it was ripped from its base at nelson park on sunday. the lobster had been unveiled as part of the chamber of commerce lobster crawl. today police say they have arrested one 15-year-old from plymouth and are trying to identify other potential suspects. the lobster itself has not been recovered.
