from gloucester, that city's high profile police chief placed on leave and under investigation. good evening i'm ed harding. ,maria and i'm maria stephanos. : chief leonard campanello, a national leader in the opioid crisis. let's get right to our shaun chaiyabhat at the breaking news desk. shaun: according to gloucester's mayor. the chief's leave took effect today. he will remain off the job during an internal investigation, at this point we is on leave. he is best known for starting the gloucester police department's angel program that allows opioid users get help instead of jail time. chief campanello has received national recognition for that effort. back in april he was honored at the white house as one of 10 champions of change. he attended another meeting on the opioid crisis at the white house in july. again there's no indication why chief campanello is off the job. but he will be on paid administrative leave until

ed: right now, police in townsend are trying to sort out a report of an attempted abduction involving three local teens. the teenage boys told police that an older man tried to grab one of them, and violently attacked another near the town library. a k-9 unit was brought in to search for the suspect who the boys say ran off into the woods. that search was inconclusive. police say they are still investigating but they do not believe the public is in any danger. maria: right now there is now a murder warrant out for the man suspected in the death of a methuen woman. emilio delarosa accused of strangling the mother of his 4-year-old son. a crime that allegedly happened in front of their child. right now, our john atwater is live in methuen with the latest on the investigation. john: the victim's family tells me they were very worried about her ex-boyfriend but they say she was insistent. she wanted her son to get to know his father. a small memorial grows outside

>> i cannot believe she's not here with us anymore. john court papers detail a : history of violence and domestic abuse at the hands of her son's father, emilio delarosa, he is now on the run, facing murder charges after she was killed inside her home. in a restraining order issued in 2011, wanda rosa said she feared for her life, saying her boyfriend grabbed her by the hair, slammed her to the ground and threatened to kill her. he went to jail for 4 years after pleading guiy kidnapping. just last month, she amended an abuse prevention order to allow delarosa to see their son, family says they were very concerned about him, but say she wanted her son to know his father who had spent the majority of the boy's life behind bars. >> in my opinion, that's what she was trying to do. she was trying to be a good mom.

he was last seen earlier yesterday morning right after this murder. maria: thank you. the man convicted in a deadly drunk driving crash in milford is now appealing to the state's highest court. a judge found nicolas guaman was driving drunk in 2011 when he hit and killed 23-year-old matthew denice who was on his motorcycle. guaman claims he didn't know the victim's body was under his pick-up truck. he is serving 12 to 14 years for manslaughter and will likely be deported at the end of his sentence, after illegally immi ed taking a live look at the : boston skyline on a tuesday night, we could be looking at some stormy weather coming in tomorrow. harvey: about mid afternoon through late afternoon to early evening. they will be scattered strong storms. it could be. the green area, that is the marginal risk for us for

and she has promised to release more health records. donald trump, meantime will tape an appearance on the dr. oz show tomorrow, he's promised to release the results of a physical he had last week. but dr. oz told fox today he won't ask any questions trump doesn't want to answer. maria it is primary night in new : hampshire, we're watching a couple big races up there, republican senator kelly ayotte easily winning her primary tonight. she'll face outgoing governor maggie hassan, who was unopposed on the democratic side, in the general election. that's going to b country. one other race of note. in the first congressional district incumbent republican frank guinta trying to hold onto his seat. right now he's in a tight race with challenger richard eshoo with more than 80% of the vote in. the winner of this primary faces democrat carol shea porter in november.

south end. damaging three buildings. the fire started on a roof deck of 73 rutland street. the building has 4 units, and the fire spread to the buildings on either side. investigators say a valve had been broken off a propane tank that may have played a role in what caused the fire. no one was hurt. maria sky 5 over large flames in : cohasset. a lot of smoke there. police say the fire started before this afternoon at a home 12:30 p.m. on rust way. everyone who lived in the home is accounted for, according to our media partners at the patriot ledger. but the family's black lab is missing after the fire. flames. ed new at 11:00, an emotional : battle over the future of a north end nursing home. tradition, and change, clashing. our mary saladna is live in the north end. mary. mary: after more than a decade, spaulding is closing this nursing home here on fulton street, and planning to re-locate to brighton. within the year. but local residents are determined to find a new caregiver.

another caregiver. >> there are so many advantages to have the nursing home and the greater dollars -- boston downtown area. it should be maintained and i mean this, our community will not settle for anything less than a nursing home. mary: city officials are asking spaulding to be a good partner by helping to find the right buyer, so that people who want to stay in the north end, can. maria a scare today for some : people in southern new hampshire who saw fighter jets fly overhead followed by small explosions in the air. the explosions were flares mistakenly dropped near hancock, new hampshire by massachusetts national guard fighter jets. the jets were on a routine training flight from their base in westfield, mass. officials say they didn't mean to drop the flares. but people nearby were caught off guard.

>> you're watching wcvb newscenter five at 11 p.m. officers captured on camera. that is phoenix, arizona where a driver slammed into officers three outside a gas station. and investigators say it was done on purpose. our shaun chaiyabhat is here with new details. shaun: the suspect is now charged with 3 counts of attempted murder. police say he may have been impaired but they insist the crash was intentional. it began in the middle of the night. three phoenix cops just talking next to this police suv outside a convenience mart. what happens next is what police

in a red car who appears to be lying in wait suddenly revs the engine and plows right into the three officers. >> he accelerates quickly. headlights on, runs right over our police officers and into the front of the store. shaun: a sergeant, an 18 year veteran goes down with a broken leg. another officer dives out of the way. but a third cop goes flying eight feet high. those are his legs in the air. he's thirty-three-years-old. it was his first day on e >> he gets propelled in to the glass, he has the gumption to get up and get into a fight and take the guy into custody. unbelievable. a hero. shaun: but the suspect isn't giving up. here, officers that were just run over have to fight him on the ground finally using a taser to make the arrest. >> they could have easily been killed. i'm glad we are not planning

the suspect is 44-year-old marc laquon payne. the phoenix police chief isn't saying why they believe payne tried to run his cops down but sees it as part of a recent pattern of attacks on officers. all 3 officers are expected to be ok. police are still looking for a motive. maria a school bus driver is : being called a hero, after saving nearly 2 dozen students from this bus fire in maryland. renita smith pulled over when a brake light came on and then she smelled smoke. she scrambled to get all 20 kids off the bus. the flames grew, to make sure every child was safe. smith says she just went into mommy mode. the cause of that fire is still unknown. ed: wcvb is joining broadcasters across the country in an unprecedented effort to fight the opioid epidemic. this new effort will also involve lawmakers and experts on the drug crisis. there will be a nationwide campaign you'll soon be seeing right here on channel 5, to encourage treatment and increase

berkshires and toward worcester county, this is mid afternoon. i would say by the early part of the evening commute, the boston area. it is possible they could try to form into a line or broken line that the biggest concern is right along the leading edge there is the risk of gusty if not strong and maybe in a few cases damaging winds. that is what we have to follow with this and we will he here to follow if it by the south shore at 5:30 p.m. and cape cod at 630 p.m. and off the coast. it will import the next round of autumn-like air which will be cooler than the most recent round. with the storm risk to mid to late afternoon, medium risk of having significant lightning and medium risk of strong or damaging winds with a few of the storms. the concert tomorrow night at
