>> good morning. wednesday, september 14. i'm randy price. emily: i'm emily riemer. stories we're following right now. a celebrated police chief on leave this morning. the investigation in gloucester and what the chief says about it. randy: a man wanted for murder. details we're learning about emily: the new probe involving donald trump and when we can expect to see hillary clinton back on the campaign trail. randy: nice, cool start to the day. hopefully a nice day in store for us, cindy. cindy: 65 in boston, not as cool this morning thanks to the southwesterly breeze. skies are clear this morning and we are going to see a lot of sunshine through at least the first half of the day, but that

more humidity. you'll notice that picking up. also a frontal boundary to the west will be a trigger this afternoon between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. of hit or miss thunderstorms. but a few of the storms could turn severe. there could be gusty winds as well. we have sunshine this morning, sun up at 6:23. 70 by 8:00 a.m. lunchtime temperatures in the lower 80s. we'll top out in the mid 80s this afternoon. but the clouds build this west of the worcester area, storms develop and they will get closer to the boston area, winding down by 8:00 this evening. lightning, a few downpours as well. let's get you to the roads right now. good morning, olessa. >> good morning. checking the pike in brighton where we have overnight construction that picked up a few minutes ago.

traveling 93 south, you're in good shape. construction clearing by mass avenue. south of town, no problems. more road work in the final stages. 128 by highland, the exit ramp is also closed on the southbound side. more construction by route 30. north of town, you're fine. randy: gloucester's police chief is off the job, suspended following an investigation. emily: sera congi is live with questions surrounding this suspension. >> chief leonard campanello is a national leader in the opioid crisis. this morning he will not be at the police department. the mayor announcing he's been suspended amid an internal investigation. it is unclear why. no explanation has been given. but the chief is defending himself to the gloucester times saying, this will run its course. i'm honestly unconcerned.

starting the gloucester police department's angel program, allowing opioid users to get help instead of jail time. he has received national recognition for that effort, honored at the white house in april as one of 10 champions of change. it was in july he attended another meeting at the white house on the opioid crisis. we're told he is being put on indefinite paid administrative leave as this investigation plays out. again, no explanation live at the gloucester police department, sera congi. emily: the man accused of murdering a police officer in north carolina is now in custody in rhode island. police raided a home in providence overnight, searching for irving fenner. he's accused of gunning down an officer in north carolina on saturday. that officer died on monday. details are still coming in at this hour about fenner's arrest. we'll keep you posted. this murder suspect is still at large right now.

murder of a methuen woman, the mother of his child. that's as we learn more about the suspect's violent history with the victim. his ex-girlfriend wanda rosa, her body was found at her home. police say she was strangled. we're learning more about the history of domestic violence. in 2011 order against delarosa. attacks included grabbing her by the hair, slamming her to the ground and threatening to kill her. last month rosa amended the order to allow him to see their son. >> in my opinion, that's what she tried to -- tried to be good mom. >> i cannot believe she's not here with us no more.

reason she wanted visitation rights for her sex, quote, so that we can do things as a family. randy: a sentencing trial for a man who committed deadly carjacks 15 years ago will get under way. that's after gary lee sampson's initial death penalty sentence was thrown out. a federal judge tossed the sentence because of juror wrongdoing. the juror lied about her background. sampson was sentenced to die for carjacking and killing 19-year-old jonathan rizzo kingston and 69-year-old philip mccloskey of taunton during a week-long crime spree in 2001. he confessed to police that he stabbed both men. that same week, he strangled a former concord city councilor after breaking into a new hampshire cabin. he was convicted separately in that crime. a report of attempted abduction in townsend.

over the future of a north end nursing home. after more than a decade, spaulding is closing that location. people in this home on fulton street will be moved to a new more modern one in brighton. spaulding says it will save millions of dollars. residents filled city hall last night to listen to the new plan. >> my mother went in, his grandma went patient. she thinks she's going home. it's hard enough to tell them, no, you have to stay here now. but now to say, now you have to be moved. emily: city leaders say they hope spaulding will partner with a buyer that allows people to stay in the north end. opponents are vowing to find a new caregiver. randy: 4:41. ahead on the eye, reaping the benefits of a stronger economy. the boost for middle and lower-income families, plus special visit to boston's children hospital.

out in the atlantic and really not going to bother anyone. julia has been bringing rain to florida. three to 6 inches expected to parts of north florida and southern georgia. winds are 40 miles per hour. this isn't going to get much more organized. it's going to weaken over land. there are tropical storm warnings for parts of the coast of north florida and southern georgia. we have clear skies. in boston it is 65 degrees. southwrl to pick up that humidity. so it's been so crisp and fall-like the past few mornings. it's still fairly comfortable this morning. but we are going to notice the humidity creeping up as the day wears on. 60 right now in worcester. lower 60s in the north shore. there's that busy southwesterly wind. could gust over 20 miles per hour at times today. it is with us all day long. also notice through the morning that's our brighter time period

afternoon. but that wind is bringing up more humid air, so the humidity coming up a little bit ahead of this frontal boundary. notice along the front, not a widespread area of rain. there are just a few showers. as we get into the afternoon hours, there will be more developing. but the nature of the storms that develop will be hit or miss. not everyone will see them. by between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m., that's the window of opportunity to marginal risk that a few of these turn severe this afternoon. it is going to heat up ahead of that front. look at these highs. an average high this time of year is 74. we're going to 87 today in boston. mid 80s metro west, south shore as well. cooler with upper 70s in the south coast and the cape. through about lunchtime, lots of sunshine. but by 3:00, 4:00, the storms fire north and west of the worcester area and then they get closer into boston between 5:00

commute there could be storms around. these will contain some brief, heavy downpours, lightning possibly. but they will be moving quickly and the biggest threat is the potential for strong winds. by 7:00, 8:00, they are pushing to the south coast and the cape and they will get out of here with clearing skies after sunset. if you're headed to to the springsteen concert, there could be a brief storm early. then the skies clear out. we're falling t tonight. the highs tomorrow, 60s and lower 70s. that's it. back to beautiful weather to end the week. it's a cool start on friday morning as well. lots of 40s, low 60s even in boston. so really turning cooler here to end the week. sunday and monday, more clouds and a few showers. saturday looking like the big day of the weekend. emily: looks pretty nice.

>> there's a check of the expressway by the mall. that's northbound at the bottom of the screen. no problems here. let's check the rest of your ride. some construction is left over on the expressway northbound by mass avenue. once again, as you make your along the expressway, a couple more minutes, it will be gone. 24 looks good. no problems on 95 or route 3. construction clearing by highland avenue. north of town, it's a quiet start. we're expecting buses on schedule. emily: right now, three phoenix police officers are recovering from the shocking attack. a car slamming into them as they stood by a cruiser. that suspect is under arrest this morning, charged with three counts of attempted murder. investigators saying he did this on purpose. take a look again. an 18-year veteran down with a broken leg. another officer jumped out of the way and a third one goes flying 8 feet high on what was his first day on the job.

fight until he's taken down by a taser by the injured officer. >> these officers could have easily been killed and i thank god we're not planning three funerals right now. >> police say marc laquon may have been impaired but insists the crash was intentional. randy: people in massachusetts are going above and beyond to help some of the victims of the deadly flooding in louisiana. $20,000 in medical supplies has been donated in crystle evans organized this medical supply drive. she says the need is so great. more than 160 tracheotomy and ventilation -- >> they were begging online, looking for calostmy bags. we have for boxes full of supplies now. randy: still have an opportunity

evans tells us she will be at the abilities expo at the boston convention and exhibition center friday through sunday collecting donations and southwest airlines plans to deliver these supplies to louisiana as their donation to this cause. samsung is not changing the design of the batteries in the galaxy note 7, some of which have reportedly exploded. instead, the company is ordering a new batch to replace faulty one and promising a software update that prevent from charging all the way. but consumer advocates are calling for a government-sanctioned recall to make selling the phone illegal. emily: your economy now. the american middle and lower classes are finally seeing some payoff from a strong economy. after seven years of stagnant incomes, households saw their biggest gains in decades. the census bureau reports the median household income rose 5.2% in 2016 from the year

randy: we have your early news to go. >> gloucester's police chief touted for his innovative approach to tackling the opioid crisis now suspended. chief leonard campanello is subject to an internal investigation. not many other details are being released. he's on paid leave right now, telling the gloucester times that he is not concerned. campanello earned national attention for his department's of jail time. randy: at least one person is recovering after a car slams into a utility pole in woburn. this is the scene overnight on lake avenue. police tell us the injuries were minor. they have not said anything about what caused this. the man convicted in a deadly drunk driving crash is appealing to the state's highest court now. nicolas guaman was convicted of drunk driving in 2011.

denise, who was riding a motorcycle. nicolas guaman claims he didn't know the victim's body was under his truck. he's serving 12 to 14 years for manslaughter and will likely be deported at the end of his sentence after illegally emigrating from ecuador. emily: a fire on rutland street yesterday. the building has four units and the fire spread to the buildings on either side. nobody was hurt. investigators say a valve been broken off a propane tank. randy: the movie theater involved in a massacre dropped the request to make the victims pay. the request was withdrawn after the victims reportedly agreed not to appeal the verdict against them. cinemark lawyers want to resolve

costs. emily: a school bus driver saves nearly two dozen students after a bus fire in maryland. renita got the kids off the bus and went back to make sure every child was safe. still not clear what caused that fire. randy: end cot college is showing support. the school held the largest ice bucket challenge yet to recognize the fight the dedication of peter frady's hall on campus. there's also a mural in the lobby dedicated. emily: the orioles turn the tables on red sox. five runs in the second inning off two home runs and the sox were within striking distance. down just two runs in the fifth. but the orioles added insurance in the ninth. 6-3 the final and the sox are

emily: uh-huh. because i think by then the thunderstorm threat will be over. so before then, there are going to be chances for a few showers and thunderstorms moving through as we have that game coming up this evening. so the storm threat is there today. it's a marginal risk that a few have the potential for damaging winds. that looks like the biggest threat from them. but there could be lightning and the heavy rain moisture and the storms will be fast-moving. it would be great if we had slow-moving downpours because you know how desperately we need the rain. for the year we're nearing the nine and a half inch mark, so we need rainfall. the front to the west is the trigger for the showers and storms today. once it goes by, we have another cool dry canadian air mass building in. this is it for at least the first half of the weekend for
