we'll go through the day with that southwesterly breeze bringing more humid air and pushing up the temperatures. so 65 in boston. look at the suburbs holding mostly in the 60s overnight. mid 60s in the cape. a few spots in northern worcester county have dropped to the 50s. high pressure in the south and east, giving the southwesterly wind flow. this is what we'll watch for the afternoon. it'sng and thunderstorms. a marginal risk some of these go severe between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. sun up at 6:23. by 9:00 this morning, lower 70s, low 80s by lunchtime, we'll top out in the mid 80s this afternoon. as we get deeper into the afternoon, that storm threat is increasing. by about 3:00, 4:00, storms north and west of worcester, but they are closing in on boston between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. for

maybe a brief downpour, but the biggest threat looks to be stronger winds with these. get you to the roads right now. could be busier for the evening commute than this morning. >> it's a quiet start this morning. expressway checked by the south bay mall. the northbound side very light so far. let's get to the maps. pretty much the same story. the overnight construction now in the final stages on the expressway north by mass avenue. looking good right now alo some construction picking up by highland avenue on 128 and route 30. so far trains and buses are on schedule. randy: gloucester's police chief is off the job, suspended following an internal investigation. emily: the eyeopener sera congi is live in gloucester with the questions surrounding this suspension. reporter: emily and randy, chief leonard campanello is considered a national leader in the opioid

at his police department. the mayor announcing that he has been placed on leave amid an internal investigation. there's no explanation at this point. the chief tells the gloucester times, this will run its course, i'm unconcerned. the chief is known for starting the angel program, allowing opioid users to get help instead of jail time. he has received national recognition for that effort, honored change. it was in july he attended another meeting at the white house on the opioid crisis. we are told he's been placed on paid administrative leave, and that is indefinite amid this internal investigation. live in gloucester, sera congi. randy: the man accused of murdering a police officer in north carolina is now in custody in rhode island. police raided a home in

he is accused of gunning down an officer in north carolina on saturday. that officer died on monday. details are still coming in at this hour about fenner's arrest in rhode island. we'll keep you posted here on the eyeopener. in just hours the second sentencing trial is about to get under way for a man who committed deadly carjackings 15 years ago. multiple brutal murders. the eyeopener's antoinette antonio is at the u.s. district court in boston to set the is set to begin later this morning after gary lee sampson's initial death penalty sentence was thrown out. a federal judge tossed that sentence because of juror wrongdoing. the judge determined that juror lied about her background. sampson was sentenced to death in 2004, but that sentence was overturned seven years later. he was convicted for carjacking and killing 19-year-old jonathan rizzo of kingston and 69-year-old philip mccloskey of taunton.

week-long crime spree in 2001. he confessed to police that he repeatedly stabbed those men and that same week he strangled a city councilor after breaking into a new hampshire cabin. he was convicted separately in that case. jury selection in this case is set to start at 9:00 this morning. we're live outside the federal courthouse in south boston, antoinette antonio. emily: the man convicted in a deadly drunk driving crash in milford is appealing to the state's highest court. a judge found nicolas guaman was driving drunk in 2011 when he hit and killed 23-year-old matthew denise, who was on his motorcycle. nicolas guaman claims he didn't know the victim's body was under his pickup truck. he is serving 12 to 14 years for manslaughter and will likely be deported at the end of his sentence after illegally immigrating from ecuador. this murder suspect is still at large right now. emilio delarosa is wanted in the

child. we learn more about the suspect's violent history with the victim, his ex-girlfriend, wanda rosa. her body was found monday in her home. police say she was strangled by delarosa. the couple's 4-year-old son just feet away. a small memorial grows and we're learning more about the suspect's history of domestic violence. in 2011, rosa filed a restraining order against delarosa, saying she feared for her life. last month she prevention order, allowing delarosa to see their son after four years in jail on attempted murder. rosa wrote to the court the reason she wanted visitation rights for her ex-- quote, so that we can do things as a family. randy: the race for white house, hillary clinton not on the presidential campaign trail this morning. she's recovering from pneumonia.

insight into his health. reporter: randy, donald trump will tape an appearance on the dr. oz show today. he's promised to release the results of a physical he had last week. tonight he'll visit flint, michigan, also hold a rally in ohio. his running mate, indiana governor mike pence, is set to hold a rally in pennsylvania. it was there in pennsylvania last night that trump outlined his child care plan with his daughter by his side, woo women voters. >> allows for every parent or family in america to deduct their child care expenses from their income taxes. reporter: his plan calls for new tax-free child care accounts that roll over each year until a child is 18. also, six weeks' paid maternity leave paid for by cutting fraud in social security. meantime, bill clinton and daughter chelsea will campaign for hillary clinton today.

the southwesterly wind starting to get active this morning. it does increase throughout the day. 10, near 20 miles per hour. it's bringing more humidity. also notice bright sunshine through late morning. but as we get into the afternoon, the clouds build. 5:00 p.m. around the boston area is when there's a possibility of a shower or thunderstorm around. ahead of that, you can see the humidity starting to come up. we're getting into the sticky frontal boundary. as this pushes eastward, more storms will develop this afternoon. so between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m., that's our window of opportunity. a marginal risk that a few storms go severe with a potential of damaging winds. that looks like the biggest threat. look at the temperatures climbing into the 80s. mid 80s around boston up to the merrimack valley, we could get

with 88 a possibility. wind off the water means highs in the 70s. brighter skies through lunch. by 3:00, 4:00, north and west of the worcester area, here we go with the storms. look how they move closer to boston between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. not everybody will see the storm, but they will tend to drop southward toward the cape between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. the storms are going to be look how quickly we clear out this evening. there could be a storm early, otherwise clearing later as the wind shifts to the north and west. temperatures tonight, 40s and 50s. tomorrow highs only in the upper 60s and lower 70s despite a good amount of sunshine. it stays comfortable heading into the weekend.

randy: self-driving cars could hit the streets of boston soon. the city has signed a deal with swiss-based world economic forum to test these vehicles. the mayor's office says testing could happen by the end of the year. the herald reports the announcement is coming today and the city is in talks with a number of self-driving car companies on this test. now, a check of the marketsful sluggish trading s stock futures here are up. emily: back to school and the work routine, but that doesn't mean we can't switch up how we exercise. you have new classes. >> fun classes. if you're sick of running, how about rowing or drumming or maybe upside down measure. the goal is almost entirely a good thing for we as consumers and a society based on the greatest degree of safety and informed consent. during this growing age of transparency, our presidential campaign more resembles one of those aerial photographs of a disappearing lake in drought-stricken california. transparent has unprecedented levels. what's most noteworthy about this presidential election is what we're not seeing. both candidates' willingness to provide voters with as much relevant and helpful information as possible to make the most informed decision on november 8. this disturbing development applies to both major party candidates and thus both bear responsibility for dramatically raising the level of candor in the remaining weeks before election day.

shore cape 50s on the map. a little bit more humidity on the backside of high pressure. we're watching this front to the west. this is going to be a trigger for thunderstorms. so between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. from west to east we're going to watch the threat of storms develop and storm prediction center giving a marginal risk that a few of those storms go severe with a potential for stronger winds. we've got sunshine. sun not up until this afternoon. by 5:00 in the boston we could see the storms. between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. they are near worcester. in the evening commute, there will be storms around. so fast-moving storms, lightning, maybe a brief downpour. the biggest threat is the potential for some stronger winds with these storms. take you through the rest of the

lake avenue. police tell us the injuries were minor. no word on a cause. right now, gloucester's police chief is off the job. the city's mayor saying chief leonard campanello was suspended amid an internal investigation. the chief telling the gloucester times, quote, this will run its course, i'm honestly unconcerned. emily? emily: right now a worcester man is about to face a judge, charged in a violent case of road rage. randy: doug is there with the other details that the suspect's two teenage children were with him when this violent confrontation broke out. police were called to to the street near the school around 2:00 yesterday afternoon. now, officers were told that 41-year-old aldo rivera pulled a machete on another driver and then punched a man following an altercation. the machete found in rivera's

side where his 13-year-old daughter was sitting. his 17-year-old son was also in the car. police say rivera was trying to pass another driver near this school when students were being dismissed. some were crossing the street at the time. we're told both men exchanged some type of gestures and profanities. we're also told that rivera will be arraigned this morning in court. we're live in worcester this morning, wcvb newscenter5. randy: right now police in townsend a report of an attempted abduction involving three teenagers there. the boys tell police an older man tried to grab one of them and violently attacked another near the town library. a k-9 unit was brought in to search for that suspect, who the boys say ran into the woods. the search was unconclusive. police say they are still investigating, but they do not believe the public is any

hampshire who saw fire jets fly overhead followed by small explosions. the explosions were flares mistaken dropped near hancock, new hampshire, by national guard fighter jets. they were on a routine training flight from their base. officials said they didn't mean to drop the flares. the national guard typically notifying the public before flying over new hampshire. a spokeso happen in this case. >> an audit reveals drugs money and guns are missing from the braintree evidence room. it's a story 5 investigates first broke. according to court records obtained, bernardo trinidad and another man were accused of selling cocaine out of a minivan with a small child along for the ride. yesterday prosecutors dismissed

this is producing a lot of rain. tropical storm warnings up for parts of florida and georgia coastlines. this will dump about three to 6 inches of rain this way. doesn't look like any of that will get here. we could use the rain. not going to see much of that with thunderstorms today. but there's a potential for lightning and stronger winds between 2:00 and 8:00 today. it's turning more humid. sun is up this morning we're in the low 70s by 9:00 a.m. notice the temperatures sneaking up into the low-to-mid 80s this afternoon. by about 5:00, yes, we are going to have thunderstorms in the area. look at the highs. mid, even upper 80s out there. watch the storms come in first to the worcester area between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. they will closer into boston between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. so not the greatest timing with the evening commute. watch how the storms drop

sun up at 6:23. 65 in boston wind out of the southwest. it's picking up the humidity. most areas are in the 60s right now north shore south shore cape. a few 50s through worcester county. that wind is going to be active today, sustained 10, close to 20 miles per hour this afternoon. notice the brightest skies are this morning. clouds build this afternoon. there's a threat for a late-day thunderstorm. we've got humidity ahead of the front, which is going to trigg afternoon. i would say between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. is our window of opportunity. not everyone is going to see a thunderstorm, but there's a marginal risk here. the areas in green, some of these storms could be severe with damaging winds. temperatures, mid, upper 80s. 86 boston. upper 70s on the cape this afternoon. and the cape, you're going to be the last place to see the storms. by about 3:00, 4:00, near the
