>> 4:30 to you. good morning. i'm randy price. >> i'm emily riemer. breaking news right now. five people being questioned after this explosion in new york city. the latest on that investigation and the latest threat overnight in new jersey. >> new details on a shooting in boston where police say it all started. and for the gunman. >> a driver in this deadly crash due in court today. the charges he is facing six months later. >> first we'll take a look at radar this morning. some heavy downpours moving through. and, of course, we need that rain. >> let's get right over to cindy. good morning, cindy. >> good morning to you both. it is a wet start for some of us this morning. you see the bulk of the rain sitting to areas north and west of even the worcester area now

a lot of this shifting through southeast new hampshire. we did have rain on the north shore. a lot of that is to the north from portsmouth to manchester. orange, you can see heavy downpours and lightning in the area as well. that will continue to be a possibility throughout the day as we have a stalled-out slow moving frontal boundary. this will slowly shift eastward and bring rain off to the northwest right now farther eastward as the day wears on. moisture left over from what was julia feeding into this system as well. it feels very uncomfortable this morning. humidity with us throughout the day. it's a warm start. upper 60's and lower 70's. we'll hold in the 70's throughout the day and notice that shower and thunderstorm with us throughout the day. we'll step through the timeline hour-by-hour. out to the roads. wet for some. kevin is in for olessa. >> not too bad.

the allston-brighton tolls, workers picked up. let's go to the maps, though, downtown. not too bad downtown. we've got no troubles here on 93 coming over the zakim bridge, somerville through the o'neill tunnel. a little good news up in burlington. overnight we had that ramp from 3 south to 128 north. that has been reopened. rest of the roadways are in pretty decent shape although there. cindy mentioned a lot of those rains coming down could slip things up a little bit on the area roadways, 93, 95 as well. no trouble down in the south. looking at an 11-minute ride braintree to boston on the expressway, routes 3, 24, 95 in great shape. >> breaking news right now -- new information this morning as police investigated that explosion that rocked new york city over the weekend. investigators are questioning several people. >> and this all came to a head

stop and a troubling discovery in new jersey. the eyeopener's erika tarantal on top of the overnight developments. >> emily, we begin in new jersey where the mayor of elizabeth overnight said up to five devices in a backpack were found in a garbage can near a train station. you see there at least one unexpectedly detonated as the bomb squad robot worked to disarm it. luckily, no one was hurt. amtrak hasus trenton, and this is new video again of where those devices were found. obviously, a heavy police presence. amtrak apologizing overnight for the inconvenience, saying service will resume as soon as it is safe to do so. meantime, in new york, at least five people are being questioned by the f.b.i. in connection to saturday's explosion in chelsea. law enforcement officials confirming to abc news those persons of interest were taken into custody following a traffic stop on the belt parkway in

it was saturday night when an explosive device blew up on 23rd street. this second device in a pressure cooker was found blocks away. cnn reporting surveillance video showing the same man at both scenes. >> investigators also exploring the possibility these incidents are related to one in new jersey on saturday morning. abc news reports an explosive device there was set cell phone timer like the one in new york city. it happened on the jersey shore before a charity race to benefit marines and sailors. nobody was hurt there. the sbi is falling several stabbings inside a minnesota mall a potential act of terrorism. isis says the attacker was one of its soldiers but the u.s. has not confirmed a link to the terror group. the 22-year-old suspect is identified as dahir adan. he's accused of stabbing nine

during a five-minute rampage. an off-duty police officer shot and killed him. all of the victims are expected to recover. >> right now, a man is fighting for his life after a shooting outside a nightclub in boston. and the eye's juli mcdonald is at the scene in allston with new details in overnight. >> randy, that shooter is on the loose as police continue to investigate what exactly happened here. a man in his 20's was shot in the head as well as the upper body just after 10:00 last night nightclub garage. he then collapsed on nearby linden street. boston police tell "the globe" it happened after an altercation inside that nightclub. the victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition. witnesses said they heard the shots, then they saw someone scoot away. >> i just heard gunshots, like boom, boom, boom, boom. when i looked around, there's no

car and gone. >> boston police say they were able to get a description from that suspect from witnesses here in this neighborhood. they are asking for help in tracking that suspect down. live in allston, juli mcdonald, wcvb, newscenter 5. >> thank you. right now, the man accused in this deadly crash at a newton restaurant more than six months ago is preparing to face a judge. the eye's sera congi is live in woburn where he'll answer to charges today. sera? to charges, but he could potentially face some of the survivors who are expected to be in the courtroom here today. 55-year-old brad casler was indicted two weeks ago for the crash at sweet tomatoes that happened march 1. he faces charges of murder vehicle homicide and driving to endanger. emily riemer and greg morin w

every time a new charter school opens in massachusetts, it takes funding away from regular public schools in that area. 400 million dollars away from neighborhood public schools. that's not right. instead of draining even more money from neighborhood public schools and giving it to charters, let's devote public resources to all of our students... not just a select few. don't lift the cap on charter schools.

we're about 1 1/2 inches below for september. boston yesterday ended up with a trace of rain. you know about this drought situation, how far behind we are. so certainly this is not going to do much, but it's going to help, especially in the areas north and west of town. we got in some significant rain. lawrence has had about 1/2 inch of rain and almost an inch in orange. when you get into some of these downpours, there is the potential for more than an inch of rain in an just be mindful of that. could lead to localized poor drainage flooding on the roads today. areas north and west of town in a line like this. everything is continuing to move in this direction. boston, worcester, southward, you're not going to get much out of this first batch of rain, but the merrimac valley, the north short, the heaviest rain is from north of portsmouth in new hampshire to around manchester.

and jaafari. really torrential downpours. you see these red colors in here? this is indicating those heavier rains that could lead to some poor drainage flooding. keep that in mind. all of this working along a frontal boundary. there's actually some extra tropical moisture feeding in. the remnants of julia working on in this front. that may enhance some of the rain potential as we get into the afternoon. it's fed up with soupy tropical moisture. it's going to be muggy throughout the day. we're in the upper 60's now where we have had rain. otherwise, lower 70's. the temperatures don't change a whole lot today. we'll sneak up a few degrees into the afternoon. notice throughout the day, there will be rain at times with that chance of a thunderstorm and temperatures holding mostly in the mid 70's across the area. so let me step you through the timeline. you can see that first batch of rain falling apart where it is

feed on in. by lunchtime, notice the rain filling in along worcester, the pike, and boston. for the ride home, notice there will be rain around as well, but not widespread heavy rainfall. potential for a thunderstorm. that may linger across southeastern massachusetts. this is a slow-moving front. many areas looking at 1/2 inch to an inch of rain potentially as this comes on through, and tonight we'll fall back into the 60's. it stays muggy tonight.as tomorrow, we'll keep that risk of a shower and thundershower or thunderstorm into southeastern massachusetts as well. we will slowly start to see things improve here as we go for wednesday, as the humidity comes on down, so it's very humid out there today. turns less humid by the end of the day tomorrow. and then you can see how the humidity is more comfortable here as we bring in the start of fall officially on thursday. we're going to feel like it by then. watch out this morning where it is raining. >> be careful.

he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. >> and a humpback whale is swimming freely after it was rescued off the coast of cape cod. the young whale was entangled in fishing gear with line through its mouth. the center for coastal studies team used a 30-foot pole and knife to cut into that rope. the while was freed after 20 minutes. the center says that the whale swam away quickly, which is a good sign. >> the red sox head to baltimore today yankees. new york got on the board quick in the first with an rbi single, and they made it 2-0 in the third with a one-run homer there. it was 4-0 before hanley ramirez put the sox back in the game in the bottom of the fifth. three-run score on his first home run of the night and does it again in the seventh, putting the sox up 5-4. and that would be the final. so part of the fake tom brady mystery has been solved now. former pats receiver wes welker

what was julia spinning here and adding a little bit of moisture kind of feeding it into this. there's definitely a tropical feel this morning. it's going to be a very humid day. temperatures in the 70's. threat for showers and thunderstorms here up and down the eastern seaboard, but behind this front, look at chicago. sunshine, mid 80's. we're going to slowly clear things out tomorrow and get at some of this drier weather as we week. but this front may get stalled early tomorrow. that's going to keep the threat for a lingering shower in the forecast in southeastern massachusetts through the first part of your tuesday. but once it goes on by, wednesday, thursday looking spectacular. tomorrow morning in southeastern massachusetts through lunchtime could be a spot shower. notice that clearing working in from northwest to southeast setting us up for a comfortable start to fall which begins thursday. a chance of a shower on friday.
