staying warm as we get closer to fall. when the temperature change will take place. ben: what doctors now say we're exposing infants to. >> from boston's news leader, this is wcvb newscenter 5 at 5:00. ben: breaking news off the top at 5:00, boston police announcing their findings in the investigation of one of their own. jc: this video the focus of the probe an off-duty officer's altercation with a pedestrian on a city street last may. what did they find, mary? mary: boston police commissioner bill evans says a thorough investigation was done and more than proved that the off duty officer did not use excessive force. the may 24 incident, captured on video and posted online, showed the officer edward barrett on top of a pedestrian with his knee on he man's back. the confrontation allegedly began when the pedestrian, 54 yr old milton gurin, struck barrett's vehicle with an umbrella.

along with statements from other witnesses and the victim himself, that contradict initial allegations that the officer violently tackled gurin, and slammed his head against the ground. >> the victim and all the witnesses clearly state that he tripped on his own and fell. civilian witnesses also consistently stated that the officer did not slam his head. the officer in question should have called a supervisor after the incident, but otherwise, acted appropriately. the incident mostly a misunderstanding. jc: we are learning more tonight about the suspect in the new york and new jersey bombings. ben: investigators now focusing on a journal he kept. and his father spoke with reporters today. newscenter 5's shaun chaiyabhat joins us with the new details, shaun? shaun: his own father feared he was a terrorist.

ben: newly released video of a deadly shooting by police in oklahoma has the victim's family calling for murder charges against an officer. in the video the officer who fired the fatal shot says terence crutcher refused to raise his hands. her claim is now being disputed, as the video shows his hands were raised. crutcher was not armed. his family is now demanding justice. a 911 caller complained crutcher stopped his suv in the road his car had broken down. a police spokesman says officers found the vial of pcp and that his car. jc: every day 78 americans die of opioid abuse, according to the cdc. the obama administration is stepping up efforts to address the crisis designating this a week of action and awareness. our sally kidd sat down with attorney general loretta lynch, who announced new actions to address the epidemic.
