>> good morning. it is thursday, september 22. i'm emily riemer. >> i'm randy price. a state of emergency in charlotte, north carolina. the second wave of violence in that city over a deadly police shooting. >> one person is dead after a motorcycle crash in nor the scene overnight. >> stepping up security at gillette stadium. the concerns ahead of the patriots game tonight and the latest on who's going to be on the field as quarterback. >> we'll get to those stories. first want to check in with cindy for a look at your morning forecast. feeling a bit more there. [laughter] >> the humidity is gone. 67 degrees. so mild at least in boston. you see the dew point is in the lower 50s, so feeling more comfortable out there and it is

suburbs. so some sort of jacket or layer probably a good idea this morning. 55 in beverly. 51 in orange. worcester at 65. 50 norwood. quite a few 50s on cape cod. there are high clouds shifting south and eastward. today will be a sun-filled day. high pressure in control. but also light wind. so, unlike yesterday, we are going to have a sea breeze today. the sun is up at temperatures in the mid 70s by 10:00 a.m. nld about 80 to 8 -- inland 80 to 85. a warm one for the first day of fall that arrives later on. let's get you to the roads. >> the roads are fairly quiet. a little bit of overnight construction. a look at the spay by the gas tank. that's northbound heading to the top of the screen. let's go to the maps.

into town. no problems south of town. 24 looks good. 95 as well. road work on 128 by highland avenue. we're expecting trains and buses to start the morning on schedule. >> breaking news in north carolina this morning. a state of emergency now declared there after a second night of violent clashes with police. >> swat teams marcheded into charlotte overnight as police used tear gas to disburse hundreds of people in the streets officer-involved shooting. new developments in overnight. the eye erika tarantal tracking it all for us. >> emily, we know at least four police officers were hurt in the second night of clashes. one protester is on life support after being shot in the head, police say, by another protester. the chaos leading to a state of emergency by the governor, who says he's deploying the national guard and state highway patrol

demonstrators throwing fireworks. the governor considering a curfew. he says the goal of many who gather is simply destruction and harm. >> we cannot tolerate violence. we cannot tolerate the destruction of property and will not tolerate the attacks toward our police officers that are occurring right now. i feel very strongly that is not the american way. >> this all comes in the wake of the fatal police say scott was commanded by yelling officers to drop a gun he was holding. although a gun was recovered at the scene, his family insists he had a book and no gun. people are calling for a video. >> an investigation into north andover. antoinette antonio is there this morning with what we know. >> randy, the scene has cleared

the details are coming in, but we know one person was killed in the crash last night around 1:00 at waverly road and turnpike street in north andover. we saw at least one motorcycle out here. but the eagle tribune reports the crash involved two motorcycles, as well as a car. that car apparently left the scene. once again, one person was killed. we don't know how many others were injured. but we will work to you as soon as we get it. live in north andover this morning, antoinette antonio, wcvb newscenter 5. >> breaking news on the north shore in say -- salem. firefighters battle a fire. one person was taken to the hospital. one man is suffering life-threatening injuries after a shooting in boston's mattapan neighborhood.

boston police have not reported any arrests. >> five people hurt after this rollover crash in boston. police say a stolen s.u.v. full of teenagers rolled over in roxbury yesterday at warren street and m.l.k. boulevard. an officer did attempt to stop that vehicle, but the driver kept going and rolling over moments later. four other vehicles also involved. no word on whether there are any charges from the theft of the vehicle. >> a rhode island man is exed plot to kill conservative blogger pamela geller. prosecutors say nicholas rovinski plotted in 2015 with david wright and usaamah rahim, boast of -- both of massachusetts. rahim was killed when investigators say he lunged at them with a knife. wright is awaiting trial. >> game day for the patriots as

will be a top priority. the eye's sera congi is in foxborough this morning, the steps being taken and whether jimmy g. is going to be on the field tonight. >> randy, security was boosted for sunday's home opener. the same protocols will be in place for tonight's game. there's a good chance it is likely we are going to see third-string quarterback jacoby brissett back in action. backup yesterday on the team injury report. he suffered a shoulder strain after a bad hit in sunday's game against the dolphins. brissett says he's ready. >> we've got to come together as a team. it's been a learning process and it's going to continue to be throughout my career. so taking this week the same as every other week. >> he's a great player. he's been improving every day. that's all you can ask for.

every time a new charter school opens in massachusetts, it takes funding away from regular public schools in that area. this year alone, charter schools will take more than 400 million dollars away from neighborhood public schools. that's not right. instead of draining even more money from neighborhood public schools and giving it to charters, let's devote public resources to all of our students... not just a select few. don't lift the cap on charter schools.

>> well, it's finally -- it finally feels like fall because it's the first day of fall. >> it begins this morning, but it's going to warm up this afternoon. so you're going to be like it doesn't feel like fall. 83 in boston. that's warm for this time of year. >> yno forecasting about 80 today in boston before the sea breeze kicks in. but our average high this time of year is now just 70 degrees. so this is like 10, 15 degrees above average today. we're not going to be getting record highs today. it's not going to be feeling autumnal.

we'll see the darkness last longer than the light. 67 in boston. outside of that it is mostly in the 50s. a cooler start than yesterday morning. we've got mid 50s on the cape as well. not dealing with the fog that we were yesterday morning. so it's a quieter start overall. you can see a little bit of high cloudiness, bringing moisture. next thing we're watching is the front to the north and west. there is moisture along the front. we'll contend with that tomorrow. on the other side of this front, see the blue across canada? there's chilly air in the upcoming weekend. today, lots of sunshine. the winds are pretty light. so by 10:00 a.m., already

shifting on onshore. we'll approach 80 degrees, but the warmest temperatures will be inland. 81 worcester. 84 in tauton this afternoon. down to gillette tonight for the patriots game. temperatures still near 70 degrees. 60s throughout most of the course of the game. not as cool tomorrow morning. some 50s in the suburbs. low 60s downtown. and tomw day. we may sneak up over 80 degrees. but this front is going to drop southward. with it, clouds are increasing. might be a light shower before the cooler air for the weekend. so 80 or higher the next couple of days. 60s in the forecast this weekend. really our only opportunity for a shower is with the front tomorrow. not expecting must moisture. but toward the late afternoon and evening hours, a few showers

patriots, making five trips to the super bowl. by a mysterious illness sidelined matt light. he tells our maria stephanos the sickness came on all of a sudden. he couldn't even get out of bed. doctors ran tests until one came back positive. histoplasmosis. light says he contracted the fungus in his home state of ohio while taking part in old barn without a mask. mold and animal droppings contributed to the disease. now healthy light and his wife reflect on what's really important. >> i came out of it being more grateful, more thankful for, you know, what i have got, my family, my friends, my wife. what people go through. >> it was really the scariest thing i have ever been through. looking at him today, i can't believe where we were a couple of weeks ago. i'm so thankful. >> you can read about the story

"keeping the lighthouse." there's a link on maria's facebook page. >> death caused by childbirth complications are dropping around the world. but a report shows they are on the rise here in the united states. new data from the gates foundation shows 28 out of every 100,000 women die during childbirth in 2013. that's up from 23 out of 100,000 in 2005. more than triple the percentage in canada. researchers speculate t increase in heart disease, diabetes, and obesity in this country have led to this jump. surprising connection discovery between organ transplants and skin cancer. researchers say people who have had a transplant are likely to develop the disease. new findings say the risk increases due to transplant medications that suppress the immune system.

to ease restrictions. they are proposing new safety measures to allow them to operate in massachusetts bay and two south shore locations while still protecting whales there. there was a law prohibiting lobster traps in those area between february and april to keep whales from getting entangled. asian shares rose overnight. a hike could come before right now, stock futures on wall street are higher. >> trending stories. colin kaepernick's national anthem protest isn't slowing down. during yesterday's playing of the national anthem ahead of their wnba playoff game against the mercury. this is the first time an entire team has taken part in the protest. kaepernick started sitting and eventually kneeling during the anthem to protest racial

the national guard was called in last night. mostly peaceful protests gave way to violence. one person was shot and critically hurt. police say they were not involved there. four police officers have been hurt. we're bringing you new developments as we get them on the eye. >> also breaking, one person is dead, another seriously hurt after this crash in north andover. it happened on route 114 at waverly night. our antoinette antonio is at the scene and she will have an update ahead at 5:00. the f.b.i. is looking for these two men who may have unknowingly disabled a bomb planted over the weekend in new york city. the men found a suitcase on the street. they removed what was inside and then took the suitcase with them. police think they removed a bomb and they want to talk to the men and get the suitcase back. >> guilty verdict for the man accused in the murder of an army

jurors convicteded peter castillo yesterday in the 2012 shooting death of 22-year-old stephen perez. it happened during a fight in a parking garage in the theater district. castillo was tracked down in the dominican republic nearly three years later. he's facing a mandatory life sentence without parole. >> a close call for a woman in boston. she gets knocked down by a duck boat while walking onto boylston street. the woman is ok this morning. but the video is a reminder to watch where you are going, street. >> blue bell ice cream recalling certain products now over a listeria concern. the company says it's chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream could contain the bacteria. the dough is made by a third-party supplier, aspen hills. no illnesses have been reported. it's a voluntary recall coming after a listeria outbreak last year temporarily shut down blue bell's operation. >> the sox go for eight straight tonight as they attempt to sweep the orioles in baltimore.
