in milford. new hampshire has become a battleground state in the looming election. that explains why hillary clinton will be back in the granite state later this week. former rival bernie sanders will join her at the university of new hampshire wednesday. they're expected to discuss college affordability. >> right now, there are still questions after police opened fire on a woman on the south shore in weymouth. at this hour, she's in the hospital. she's facing charges. the eyeopener's doug meehan in weymouth with why >> randy, good morning. the officer involved this morning saying he had to shoot the woman on king avenue because she refused to drop a knife. police say that the woman's mother frantically called 9-1-1 telling dispatchers her daughter was trying to kill herself. responding officer was confronted by that 46-year-old woman. she allegedly ignored his orders and he shot her in the stomach. >> i saw her just laying on the

and you could see, like, the blood on her shirt. >> we're told the woman does have a history of depression. this morning she is still at the hospital facing charges of assault with a dangerous weapon. her condition isn't clear. it's not exactly clear when she will face those charges. live in weymouth, doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. >> doug, thank you. grief counselors are going to be available at an elementary school in grafton today after a tragic accident. that accident took the lifof a minivan hit that child near his home at the lordvale acres condo complex. a priest arrived on the scene yesterday to try and offer comfort to family and friends. investigators spent hours at the scene. at this point, they say it appears to have been an accident. >> today the world is mourning the loss of two sports figures, one who changed his sport forever and another who had barely begun what was sure to be a remarkable career.

donald trump and hillary clinton go head to head in their first debate. it will be held at hofstra university in new york. coverage begins at 9:00 p.m. right here on wcvb. >> right now a weymouth woman is in the hospital. she was shot by police. officers say that she refused to drop a large knife after they confronted her on king avenue yesterday. she's charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. in a matter of hours, a man convicted in the murder of an army his future. >> the eye's sera congi is live in boston to set the stage for today's sentencing. >> peter castillo will learn his sentence later this morning more than four years after the murder took place in a boston parking garage. castillo, a 28-year-old man from salem, was found guilty of first-degree murder last week. he now faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole. he was convicted of shooting 22-year-old stephen perez in the

perez was an army sniper who served in iraq and afghanistan. castillo went into hiding in the dominican republic before being arrested and brought back to the u.s. last year. he'll be formally sentenced this morning at 10:00 a.m. live at the suffolk superior courthouse, sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. >> thank you. right now a connecticut man is recovering after he was found alive more than a week after vanishing at sea. the crew of a freighter found the 22-year-old nathan carman drifting on yesterday. carman and his mom, linda, were reported missing last sunday. they didn't come back from a fishing trip. the coast guard did search roughly 60,000 square miles for the two of them, suspending their efforts on friday. coast guard says nathan doesn't have any life-threatening injuries. we have no updates at this point on where linda carman might be. >> new this morning -- boston is considering a new overhaul to deal with sharp enrollment decline.

schools that end at grade 6 and high schools that start at grade 7. superintendent tommy chang tells "the globe" it could boost the quality of education for middle school students. the preliminary plan is expected to be presented to the school committee next month. and today the state is set to release the results of the mcas and parcc exams. it will show which schools are underperforming and which have improved enough to exit the category. that's a combination of the two exams. >> firefighters are investigating a deadly fire in greenfield. this massachusetts state employee is among the victims. brian tower is his name. he worked for the state police 28 years. the fire on meridian street took the life of his wife, florenda. when firefighters got to the

somerville man hit and killed by a vehicle in medford. 41-year-old alberto santo-flores. the driver kept going. state police have not released a description of the driver or the vehicle involved. >> an attleboro man will be in court charged with driving drunk and slamming into a police cruiser. jeremiah garrett-levine was speeding and checking his phone when he hit that cruiser in a rotary. the crash sent sergeant william steeves to the hospital. he is expected to recover. >> when it comes to legislative races in the commonwealth, most candidates are facing no opposition. of the 160 seats up for grabs in the house this november, the general election, 116 races are unopposed. that's about 72%. a similar story in the state senate where candidates in 25 races are not facing a challenger. >> the city-wide curfew in

it was put into place last week following days of unrest tied to the police shooting of keith lamont scott. the protesting continued outside a carolina panthers game yesterday. they were peaceful. >> one man is dead, a suspect is charged at a starbucks in vegas. the two were arguing when one pulled out a gun. there were other customers inside the starbucks at the time. the suspect left behind backpack in the restaurant prompting evacuation. a bomb squad was called and determined there was no explosive in that backpack. >> a washington state man charged in a deadly mall rampage will appear in court today. police captured arcan cetin saturday after nearly 24-hour manhunt. he's accused of shooting five people at a mall in seattle. he had several run-ins with authorities, records showing he was involved in more than half a

it has bloomed. 2,000 people flocked in see it at this greenhouse. they were there to get a whiff, get a picture or two. this is the first time in about five years the corpse flower has bloomed. >> it's a little stinky, but my garbage smells worse. >> it was kind of gross. >> like out in the field where the cows have been. >> i've smelled dirty diapers and >> it's cool we can have a tropical plant in new hampshire. >> the tropical flower -- in case you missed it, folks, it will not bloom again at dartmouth until the year 2021. and you, too, can stand in line and smell dirty diapers and rotting garbage. >> they all went home and did a laundry. >> this smalls awful.

i'm good. yeah. all right. check out these temperatures. you know it is chilly here, but look to the north. 20's on mount washington. we're below freezing in lewiston maine. look at saranac lake, new york. in the 20's. definitely some freezing that way where there's a freeze warning. locally, we've got a frost advisory up through 8:00 this morning. and after worcester county out through the berkshires and pockets south of boston as well where it is chilly. degrees. some frost likely there. mid 30's nashua to bedford. keen at 32. we've dropped to 32 degrees in taunton as well. at the freezing mark there. 30's showing up. falmouth and down toward the vineyard. you can see just a little bit of brightening. sun not up until 6:36. but clear skies, light winds, and very dry air in place. dew point's in the 30's. we're going to have that throughout the day today. this little strip of more humid air kind of feeding up through

frontal boundary. this is going to cross our area tomorrow and bring us some needed rainfall. again, it doesn't get in here until tonight. the potential is there for 1/4 to 1/2 inch of rain across the area. we'll take that. today we've got sunshine. you see the sunrise at 6:36. we don't get up to the 50's until 9:00 a.m. you'll want that jacket most of the day, this afternoon, mid to upper 60's. clouds thicken up tonight, clear here come the clouds. showers approaching you in the worcester area. they will cross over into boston during the morning commute. there's a new tropical wave way out there, but this is likely going to head toward the caribbean over the course of the next week or so. we'll keep you posted on that. the rain coming in tomorrow comes in mostly in the morning. by lunchtime, notice how the showers shift down toward the cape and offshore? we should dry off in the afternoon hours tomorrow. it's only temporary. those clouds back up on
