>> from boston's news leader, this is wcvb newscenter 5 news at noon. erika: we begin with breaking news. another mass shooting, this time in a strip mall parking lot in houston. heather: police say 9 people were shot and wounded this morning by a lawyer who had issues with his law firm. when police arrived at the scene, the suspect shot at them. officers fired back, hitting him. he died at the scene. as for the injured -- chef but six individuals were transported to area hospitals. three were released for a total

found at the scene. a bomb-squad robot is looking at a porsche that's believed to be the shooter's, and bomb squad officers also were examining the suspect's residence -- residents. we're also following breaking news out of fitchburg. a woman is dead after a fire in a home at 71 cottage street. according to the state fire marshall, the woman was found inside the building. erika: that was the second big firefighter of the day for firefighters in fitchburg. this is the an abandoned school building in fitchburg. the fire broke out overnight on academy street. no injuries reported. classes were closed at the nearby longsjo middle school for smoke concerns. commitment 2016. live pictures from hofstra university just hours away from a critical moment in the race for the white house, the first presidential debate. heather: for the first time the two candidates will share one stage. the debate could draw a super

erika: donald trump's running mate will be stumping for votes in new hampshire this afternoon. mike pence is headlining a rally in milford. new hampshire has become a battleground state in the looming election. democrat hillary clinton will be back in the granite state later this week. former rival bernie sanders will join her at the university of new hampshire on wednesday. they're expected to discuss college affordability. heather: in suffolk superior court this morning, a man convicted in the murder of an army veteran was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole. sera congi was in the courtroom when the victim's family spoke now. sera: heather, a lot of emotion in the courtroom. the sentence was mandated, so that was not a surprise, but it was a chance for the family to speak out. shows but >> >> the heart of our family ripped out. sera: through tears, rebecca prouty tells a packed courtroom about her brother stephen perez,

>> he was the light of our lives. our lives have never been darker. sera: perez who served two tours of duty in afghanistan, was murdered during a fight in a theatre district parking garage. >> on his way to protect as further as a policeman. sera: twenty eight-year-old peter castillo, of salem was convicted of first degree murder last week, nearly 4 years after the crime. he initially fled to the dominican republic where he was captured last year. today a judge imposed th of parole. >> in another age this incident that occurred would have ended with perhaps black eyes and slit lips. it was the introduction of a handgun which turned what would have been an unpleasant experience into a tragedy.

upper 60's this afternoon. not going to be as chilly tonight, but we have the rain on the way. the full timeline is ahead. erika: right now there are still questions after police open fire on a woman in weymouth. the woman is in the hospital and facing charges. newscenter 5's doug meehan is live in weymouth at police headquarters where we are learning a little bit more about the officer involved. doug? do ug: we are learning that the officer involved is a 20-year department veteran. the investigation continues. this morning at south shore hospital, the 46-year-old woman was being treated for a gun shot wound to the stomach. it was her mother that had called police yesterday after she said her daughter was trying to kill herself. radio transmissions from the officer on the scene at king avenue, just a small glimpse into the frantic situation outside of the tammy brook

>> a lot of screaming going on through the night. doug: when the responding officer arrived he a claims he was confronted by the woman who had a knife her hand. according to police, she refused his commands to drop that knife. that's when the officer opened fire. collect this morning, i talked to her. she is very close to me and my son. she is fine. doug: friends of her family tell news center 5 that she does have a history of depression. she is eventually expected to face charges of assault with a dangerous weapon. we have reached out to the mayor's office for comment. so far, we have not heard back. wcvb newscenter 5. heather: right now a connecticut man is recovering after he was found alive more than a week after vanishing at sea. a freighter found 22-year-old nathan carman drifting on an inflatable life raft yesterday. carman and his mother, linda, were reported missing last sunday when they didn't come back from a fishing trip off the

pair, suspending their efforts on friday. the coast guard says nathan doesn't have any life-threatening injuries. no updates right now on where linda carman might be. erika: grief counselors are on hand at the elementary school in grafton after a tragic accident takes the life of a 5-year-old boy. police say a minivan hit the child near his home at the lordvale acres condo complex. a priest arrived on the scene yesterday to try and offer comfort to family and friends. investigators spent hours at the scene but, at this point, they say it appears to be a freak accident. heather: boston police are still looking for suspects after six people were stabbed with knives and broken bottles. it happened on tremont street in the city's theater district early sunday morning. two of the victims required surgery. it's not clear what started the brawl. everyone involved is expected to recover. erika: coming up, more problems for samsung, this time with a tablet. why a plane had to make an

right now, there is no curfew in charlotte, north carolina. the mayor lifted that curfew. 45-year-old keith lamotte scott was shot near his suv outside his apartment complex. police say he was armed. video did not settle the issue. erika: today, the world mourning the loss of a golfing legend. arnold palmer is largely credited with bringing golf to the masses. he died yesterday of heart complications at age 87. palmer, known as the king, won 7 major championships. but his reach went further, pioneering the sports marketing we know today that has helped athletes reap millions in endorsements. heather: new problems for samsung. a delta flight was forced to make an unscheduled landing in england after smoke that officials blame on an overheated samsung tablet. the galaxy note 7 smartphone has already been recalled because of overheating batteries. the faa issued a warning about taking them on planes. in this case, officials believe

a seat on the detroit to amsterdam flight and started smoking. erika: to your economy now -- new census data finds progress when it comes to poverty in the united states. the new report found 3.5 million americans were able to rise above the poverty line. african americans and hispanics saw the biggest improvement which is key since those groups account for 45% of those below the poverty line. economists credit the growing number of jobs created since the end of the recession. family are desperate to find a boston university student missing in new york city. zachery cam-high vanished a week ago. the 25-year-old is a grad student at b.u. he was in new york last week to pick up his double bass from a friend. cam-high was last seen leaving the w hotel in manhattan's east side. cam-high was diagnosed as bipolar in 2013. he's disappeared before here in boston, but never for this length of time.

new overhaul to deal with sharp enrollment declines. the idea is to create elementary schools that end at grade six and high schools that start at grade seven. superintendent tommy chang tells the globe the reshuffling could boost the quality of education for middle school students. the plan is expected to be presented to the school committee next month. the mbta's fiscal and management control board meets today. among topics on the agenda creating overnight bus service. supporters of the proposal say it could be accomplished without great expense. the agency came under fire after concerns. also on the agenda proposed schedule changes for the commuter rail. heather: president obama's signature climate change policy goes to court this week. oral arguments are set to begin tomorrow as the u.s. court of appeals hears the case. at issue is a clerical error in the clean air act which left conflicting amendments on power plant regulation. erika: -- heather: next month, president obama will be joined

it got down to 28 degrees. cold stuff for sure. frost in thompson -- frost in taunton. we have warmed up. this is a little early. the average even in the western part of the state is early october. many areas are eer to work, pushing us to the lower 60's in boston. notice that is already beginning to turn on shore. that is where we are in beverly. lower 60's on the cake. -- lower 60's on the cape. merrimack valley, lower 60's now. we will come up a few more degrees.

of the afternoon, which is slowly increasing and cloud cover. you can see how clear it is now. out to the west you see the clouds ahead of this next area of rain. it is lining up along the hike. this whole line is shifting eastward. it is taking a while to get on in here. also a strip of 70's and lower 80's. even though the clouds come in, we will see the temperatures 60's behind that front the rest of the week. the clouds are coming in, the wind shifting in the south done in the 50's. as the clouds come in during the overnight hours, dry through this evening. tomorrow morning, 5:00, 6:00, showers coming in. worcester on up into southern new hampshire and then they get into boston and through 9:00 tomorrow morning, some good rain.

thunder. by lunchtime tomorrow, it is shifting toward the cape. the potential is therefore a quarter to half an inch of rain, perhaps a little bit more. once we get behind the system, again we are talking about temperatures with a westerly wind tomorrow sneaking up into the upper 70's. wednesday, that tries to shift offshore. another round of showers may try to come in wednesday, but there will be clouds around and showers on into thursday as well. really it's just an unsettled pattern. moisture spinning up the eastern seaboard. that means wet weather through the weekend until this lips out and that probably will not happen until sunday. we will finally get some this
