>> good tuesday morning. it is september 27th. i'm erika tarantal. >> i'm randy price. first we're following on the eyeopener right now at 4:30 a fiery display at the first presidential debate last night. the attacks from both canndidats and what they left on the table. >> a deadly shooting under investigation b busy train station. >> a rescue boater returning to land today. the questions he's going to face when he arrives in boston. >> that and more coming up. first, good morning to cindy and we what's behind you. >> we've got rain on the way. you can see it is just moving in really into central massachusetts. right now raining in orange. leominster getting in on some of the heavier rain. as you look toward the worcester area, you can see on the west side of town we have steadier rain.

it's only a matter of time before this does spread in toward 495 and into boston and the coastline. rain is on the way. it's coming with a frontal boundary. ahead of that a southerly wind has allowed temperatures to hold steady through the overnight. we're starting out in the 50's and 60's. in fact, mid 60's right now plymouth to the cape. it is a much milder day. we jump into the 70's. we have wet weather in place through about lunchtime. then eventually we get into breaks of afternoon. between 70 and 75. and in terms of how long this rain is going to stick around, raining pretty good in boston through the morning commute at 8:00 a.m. even through 10:00 this morning, the rain is over in worcester but raining in boston. by lunchtime, that's shifting out. by 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, breaks of sunshine. obviously, we're going to be dealing with wet weather for that morning commute. let's get a check of the roads. good morning, olessa. >> good morning.

at the pike. a check by alston-brighton eastbound by the top of the screen. you can see what's left of overnight construction. let's check out the rest of the ride. no problems. a little bit of road work on 93 south of the zakim and the expressway north over by the o'neill tunnel. as you head south looking good on route 3. there is construction near bergen parkway. pike looks good. then some more road work on 128 by highland avenue and southbound approaching route 2. so far we're expecting trains and buses to start the morning on schedule. erika? >> commit 2016. hillary clinton and donald trump getting back to the campaign trail after a heated showdown. the question, how will that critical first debate impact this tight race. >> this morning we're covering all the angles for you. abc's stephanie ramos in new york with details. >> the candidates hillary clinton and donald trump walking out on the debate stage, shaking hands and taking a fighting

trump will be at the sportsplex thursday. if each candidate wins the states they're leading in, abc projects clinton would win with 273 electoral votes. if trump can flip new hampshire from blue to red, its four electoral votes are enough to pull him even with clinton at 269. >> the green party presidential candidate, jill stein, says that she was escorted off hofstra's night. she tweeted pictures. she was interviewing with reporters when security told her that she didn't have the right credentials to be there. libertarian candidate gary johnson watched the debate from twitter's office in manhattan. they did not meet the 15% polling threshold. our emily riemer is at hofstra after covering the debate last night. emily will be joining us on the eyeopener at 5:00 this morning.

breaking overnight -- boston police investigating a deadly shooting in jamaica plain. the eye's doug meehan is on centre street with what we know right now. >> boston police were called at 1:00 this morning. when they arrived, they found a man with several gunshot wounds to his torso. police are telling us that the victim is in his 40's. he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. that shooting scene here on centre street, as you mentioned, just feet away from the jackson square t stop. police are looking at surveillance video for any clues of course, they're also asking if you saw anything regarding this shooting, please give them a call. we're live in jamaica plain this morning, doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. >> right now, a rescued boater is on his way to boston after spending a week drifting at sea. he's going to be facing questions about what led to the disaster and the eyeopener's sera congi is in boston where he's expected today. sera? >> randy, coast guard officials want to interview this boater when he returns here this morning.

how he survived and, of course, more about his mother, who is still missing. 22-year-old nathan carman was found sunday in a life raft 100 miles south of martha's vineyard by a chinese freighter that is bound for boston. we're told he is in remarkably good condition. now, his mother, linda carman, was with him when they set sail last week for a fishing trip from rhode island. she's now presumed dead. ahead of the voyage, she sent a text message to a hear from me." >> it was reported that he -- when the water -- when the boat started taking on water, he got his life raft. he went looking for his mom to get into a life raft and he could not find her. >> now, it is still unclear whether the boat was equipped with a radio. there is no record of a mayday call. nathan was born and raised in

>> hope you enjoyed the sun yesterday. >> oh, yeah. we have unsettled weather ahead. we need it. you can see the drought monitor showing you that area of red indicating extreme drought across a good portion of the state. more than 50% of the state. look at our deficit in boston, over 10 inches. that's only happened a few times in the past several decades. we are extremely dry in desperate need of rain, final getting some today. 8 1/2 inches our deficit in but it's 1/4 to 1/2 inch for most of us. the potential for more rainfall along the south coast, cape and islands where we could see between 1/2 and one inch of rainfall. the heaviest rain is certainly going to be this morning. we get into the afternoon. the chance for rain is going down. wednesday into thursday, kind of a medium chance that there will be some rain around. some drizzle and patchy areas of mist as we move forward in time. first things first.

massachusetts, down through berry. you can see it's getting into worcester into leominster as well. this is the leading edge of the heavier showers. the yellows are decent downpours marching eastward. it's just a matter of time. if you want to beat the rain, get out pretty quickly. this is going to be with us for the next few hours. it's lining up ahead of a frontal boundary with a southerly flow of air ahead of it. it's brought milder temperatures. remember how chilly it was yesterday morning? across a good portion of the area. this morning we're starting in the 60's. significantly milder. behind that front, the air mass does cool down. i think we're going to jump up those temperatures today and today likely the warmest of the week. 60's this morning. by noon, the rain is winding down. as we get deeper into the afternoon, there will be the breaks of sunshine. that will allow temperatures to jump up into the low to mid 70's where we clear out first north and west of the city.

lawrence. here's the timeline. those showers and downpours getting into the boston area by 8:00 a.m. notice we're going to start to see improvements out in worcester by then. then as we work toward 10:00 this morning, notice the focus here is in southeastern massachusetts. still raining, though, until about lunchtime here, and then we're going to see that rain shut off and the skies brightening up as we get into the afternoon. overnight, a nearly wind is going to develop. look what happens. moisture backs in off the ocean. that's going to bring in cloudy, cool, damp weather start night we'll fall back into the 50's to 60 degrees. area of low pressure will try to back more moisture in. the bulk of the heavier rain stays offshore. the northeasterly wind will keep us locked in cloud cover and a cool, damp setup through the next several days. not a lot of rainfall, but take tomorrow, for example. start out with those clouds and patchy drizzle, fog in the morning, through noontime, we'll have those around. we don't expect brightening into wednesday afternoon.

breaking news in your early news to go. >> a deadly shooting in the city of boston. this was the scene on centre street on jamaica plain near the jackson square t stop. boston police found a man in his 40's suffering from several gunshot wounds. police are looking for surveillance video for clues in this case. this man is expected in court today accused in the shooting inside a cvs in stoughton. police arrested the man. that injured an 18-year-old. two juveniles are charged in this crime. pierre-louis will be facing several charges including attempted murder. >> this four-alarm blaze in fitchburg was intentionally set. the classes were canceled at longsjo middle school. one firefighter was hurt but expected to be okay. investigators asking for the

investigators say this deadly fire in fitchburg was sparked by wood pellets stored too close to a water heater in the basement. 53-year-old cheryl cutting died in the fire yesterday morning. the home also had no working smoke alarms. >> lexington police are searching for whoever broke into a church and stole a 400-pound safe. they say someone broke into the st. nicholas greek orthodox church late sunday night or early monday morning. police say to a nearby yard and did not appear to be opened. >> a warning in salem, new hampshire. skimming devices were found at four gas pumps in that community, including super petroleum and dusty citgo on pelham road. police don't know how long they've been there. anyone who filled up at the stations should keep a close eye on their accounts. >> boston students could be heading to school earlier. superintendent of schools, tommy

reconfiguration of elementary and high schools. elementary school would run through sixth grade. high school would begin with grade seven. chang says this may help combat the decline in enrollment. he'll present the plan next week. this morning we're getting new numbers on the syrian refugee crisis. 650 refugees have been relocated in new england this year. massachusetts has taken in 145 refugees from that war-torn country. 334. >> morning sickness during pregnancy may be a good thing. researchers at the national institute of child health studied almost 800 people who had one miscarriage and became pregnant again. they found women with nausea early in pregnancy were half as likely to have miscarriages and stillbirth an those who sailed through the first few months. they say it's not clear if results would apply to a first-time pregnancy.

temperatures, stuck or at 60 degrees. kicking off is this frontal boundary. ahead of it we have mild temperatures and a southerly wind and a ribbon of rain coming through in the next few hours. i think after lunchtime a lot of this will be winding down. a much drier afternoon. morning rain, temperatures in the 70's not just here but down to d.c. wet today in the northeast. behind this front, the air mass dries out and some really nic plain states back to chicago. see this spin? this is an upper area of low pressure that will dominate the rest of our weather this week. low pressure shifts eastward, we're going to get a surface wind from the north and east. that's going to bring in a lot of clouds, drizzle from time to time, and just give us a cool, raw feel. we are watching this tropical wave getting stronger.
