in recent months, but big change coming up. you look outside right now and it's not so bad. it's 61 degrees in boston. but that wind is already active east-northeast 15 miles an hour. that is going to be with us throughout the day. notice over the next 12 hours that wind gets stronger. sustained winds near 20 at the coastline could gust higher. that will keep the clouds locked. radar this morning, but a lot of times it sneaks under the radar. in the worcester area, visibility is running a quarter-mile. so not the greatest start. mid 50s through worcester county. otherwise, we've got temperatures close to 60 along the coastline. near us, that organized rain passing by south and east of nantucket. the northeasterly wind is the big story the next few days.

through the early part of the afternoon, better chance of patches of drizzle. i would have an umbrella today. you can see a lot of clouds, patches of drizzle and things don't change at lunchtime and they don't change into the afternoon. so, although much of the time will be dry, it's going to be a cool, damp and raw feel. we'll look at your seven-day forecast coming up. i want to get you to the roads. good morning, olessa. >> live loo gas tank, traffic is fairly light. a couple of construction projects in the final stages. expressway northbound by the o'neill tunnel, no issues south of town. still in good shape on route 3, 24, and 95. the pike eastbound 15 minutes 495 to 28. southbound side of 128, picking up construction and then also by route 3.

on schedule. >> we're following breaking news right now on the eye. >> police on the scene of a serious assault in revere. the eyeopener's antoinette antonio is there live with what we know right now. antoinette? >> emily, crime scene detectives have cleared the scene and they are not releasing a lot of information. but we know that a man was severely beaten and is suffering from life-threatening injuries this morning. here's a look at that scene from overnight. police have been out her parking lot of the squire lounge in revere. we could see yellow crime scene tape surrounding the area near the front doors as investigators look into what exactly happened here. revere police have not said who was involved in this assault, but a man was severely beaten and was taken to mass general hospital, suffering from life-threatening injuries. we will stay on top of this investigation and we'll bring you the latest as we get it.

antonio, wcvb newscenter 5. >> thank you. breaking overnight, state police investigating a fatal crash in leominster. this is the scene just after 11:00 last night on route 190 south of route 2. only one vehicle, an s.u.v., was involved. we're told the victim is the driver. no word on what might have triggered that crash. the son of former israeli president shimon peres confirms the 93-year-old died president obama remembered the life of a n he said, quote, a light has gone out but the hope he gave will burn forever. shimon peres suffered a stroke two weeks ago. he worked to build israel's military and fought for peace with surrounding nations. >> a busy day for the candidates on the campaign trail. donald trump claims victory in the first presidential debate. erika tracking it all for us this morning. >> randy, hillary clinton teams up with bernie sanders for an

donald trump is set to speak to voters in illinois, iowa, and wisconsin. most of the polls giving clinton the edge as new comments from trump spark new controversy. trump blaming bad questions from moderator lester holt and what he claims was a spotty microphone for his performance. speaking last night in florida, trump warning things could get personal. >> for 90 minutes i watched her very carefully and i was also holding back. i didn't want embarrass her. >> he was kind of digging me for spending time off the campaign trail to get prepared. but trying to keep track of everything he says took a lot of time and effort. >> the clinton campaign ad featuring miss universe 1996 alicia machado makes the rounds. she says trump was critical of her appearance after she won the contest and gained weight. she will be on "good morning, america" after the eyeopener. >> the united states senate

keep the government funded beyond this friday. that deadline is midnight on september 30 to come up with an agreement. most democrats and at least 10 republicans voted to block the bill yesterday, which also provides funding to combat the zika virus. democrats are demanding money to help flint, michigan, deal with its water crisis. republican leaders promise to address that issue after the election in a separate bill. the family of a marathon attack victim is today and the eye's reporter is in cambridge with the push to honor first responders. >> good morning, randy. this memorial was dedicated earlier this year to pay tribute to the sacrifice made by m.i.t. officer sean collier. now his family is hoping congress will pass a bill to honor all first responders. they are calling for a national holiday to honor those brave men and women. it was the days after the attack

sean collier's younger brother andrew, joined by a congressman, will talk to lawmakers today. andrew collier works for nascar, who along with hooters is promoting the initiative. we'll keep you updated. >> doug, thank you. new information about the deadly crash at a newton pizza restaurant. court documents show the s.u.v. may have been speeding up to crash. casler is charged with slamming into sweet tomato in newton in march. the impact moved a nearly 4,000 pizza oven about 4 feet. two people were killed, several injured. casler say multiple sclerosis was not a factor in the crash. a warning tied to the proposed billion dollar expansion of boston children's hospital. a group says the expansion that

garden could cause health costs to rise. the group found the expansion would draw patients from other hospitals, increasing spending by nearly $10 million annually. children's has some of the highest hospital prices in the state, according to the globe. >> the mother of a child once known as baby doe will testify against her ex-boyfriend. rachelle bond claims that michael mccarthy is responsible for bella's deer island in june. rachelle bond facing accessory charges. today marks 20 years since jose delacruz disappeared. the 6-year-old was last seen september 28, 1996. a stranger with a dog promised him a bike. police searched the area,

and there's a slow transition. we are whipping it right around. it's been a warm month. running about three degrees above average. we were in the lower 70s yesterday. look at the next few days as we take a stretch into the upcoming weekend. we're looking at below average temperatures. 61 degrees right now, though, in boston. we've got that east-northeasterly wind 15 miles per hour. it's really all about the wind the next several days. by this afternoon at 3:00, this is the wind other 20 miles per hour along the coastline. that wind is going to be with us even into tomorrow afternoon and into friday. for the next several days this northeasterly wind is going to have an impact on our weather. it's brought in some fog. visibility down to about half a mile in the worcester area. not a big issue along the coastline right now, but notice the temperatures in the upper 50s to around 60 degrees.

at 62. a little bit cool around worcester county where we started out clear and then had the clouds come in. notice over the next 12 hours in boston, maybe 61 degrees now, but we're falling a few degrees into the afternoon with a lot of clouds and can't rule out patchy drizzle. so a good idea to have an umbrella with you today or a waterproof jacket. th nantucket, there could be low-level patches. we have a stalled front offshore. high pressure to the north. in between, that northeasterly wind is going to rule the next few days. temperatures upper 50s to near 60. the winds will make it feel cooler. by noon, a couple of patches of drizzle here and there. same deal by about 5:00, 6:00.

well. temperatures don't change too much. we fall into the upper 40s and low-to-mid 50s. it's a cool night. things don't change a lot tomorrow as well. the skies may try to brighten across central and northern new england tomorrow, but i think in southern new england we stay locked in the clouds. friday, low pressure will lift northward and that will bring rain friday into saturday. look at tomorrow. we've got the clouds, that northeasterly wind. high of only it feels like it's in the mid 50s in the morning. throughout the afternoon, notice the feels-like temperature in the 50s. wet weather into saturday. sunday into monday, we flip the switch. i think it's going to be a gradual climb out of the pattern. >> improvement follows. >> the roads are quiet. a live look at the expressway.

i just want what's best for my kids. when i hear arguments that massachusetts needs more charter schools, i think: what about the students in all of our schools? every new charter takes away more money from the existing public schools. that's 400 million dollars, just last year. we can't afford to drain even more money from our kids' schools because they're already losing so much. i'm not just standing up for my own kids; i'm fighting for yours, too.

15, 20 miles per hour, may gust over 20 miles per hour along the coastline today. so that raw northeasterly wind taking over. you can see a lot of clouds and patches of drizzle here and there. starting out cooler in worcester already at 55 degrees. boston, 61. coastal areas to the cape matching water temperatures this morning. radar doesn't look like a lot is happening, but i would have the umbrella with you. there will be pockets of mist and drizzle today. any organized rain pretty much staying worcester area. visibility has improved a little bit since the last hour. so that is some good news. otherwise, a lot of cloud cover this morning. with that northeasterly wind, we are going to stay locked in the clouds pretty much all day. notice the temperatures may fall a couple of degrees with patchy mist and drizzle. you can see that through this evening. i wouldn't expect heavy rain.

vessel. the mother and son left the coast of rhode island on a fishing trip september 17. seven days later, nathan was rescued from a life raft found by a freighter heading to boston. last night his father took his son back home to vernon, vermont. >> he's lost a little weight. other than that, he's doing well. >> i would like to thank the public for their prayers and for their concern for both my mother and for from the coast guard yesterday, police had been searching his home on monday and they took a modem, sim card and a letter he wrote. according to court papers, nathan was doing medical repairs on the boat, which could have potentially made it unsafe in the ocean. he has not been charged with any crime. reporting live from the coast guard station in the north end, todd kazakiewich, wcvb newscenter 5. >> todd, thank you. a crisis on main street. a business group says small businesses across the state are shutting down.

association has launched a new campaign hoping to draw beacon hill's attention to the issue. the website is called dark storefrontsma.com. they want members to post photos of businesses that have closed up shop. they warn once main street leaves, it never comes back. from rescued boater nathan carman, who is waking up in vermont a day after he was brought back to shore and interviewed at the coast guard station. >> i feel healthy. i feel healthy. emotionally, i've been through a huge amount. >> carman's father drove him back to vernon, vermont last night. the house that was searched the previous night by police in connection with a reckless endangerment investigation. carman's mother is presumed dead after their boat sank september 18. he tells the coast guard the boat was having engine trouble and started taking on water. todd kazakiewich, wcvb newscenter 5. >> the family of fallen m.i.t. officer sean collier, who is memorialized here on campus, is pushing for a national day of remembrance for all first responders. his younger brother and a

the hotel evacuated because of toxic smoke. police say they are searching for four suspects now. police say that a black man shot several times by a police officer near san diego has died. the el cajon police chief says the man was not armed, but had pulled an object from his pocket and pointed it in a shooting stance towards the two officers. that prompted one of them to open fire. the shooting triggered hours of protests, >> [crying] >> an emotional moment at a heated city council meeting in charlotte, north carolina. it was the first one since the police shooting death of keith scott last week. the girl's tears making the adults in that room pay attention. she was there with peaceful protesters and asked to speak with the mayor about the tragedy. >> controversy near the university of new hampshire over these flyers. they are advertising a website
