little bit of a chill to the air this morning for sure. radar is fairly quiet here locally for now, but looking as i widen out the view. to the south and the west, we've got rain and it is lifting northward. as we go through the day, cloudy skies are going to give way to some areas of rain as low pressure tracks in our general direction. so it is going to be a wetter day developing. have the wet weather gear with you as you're heading out. 50's this morning. sun up at 6:41. by late morning still dry but lunchtime right start to move in, and you can see that on futurecast. showers lifting up from the south coast. we're dry through the morning commute. it's as we get toward the early afternoon till this evening there will be rain around. your weekend coming up. let's get you out to the roads. good morning, olessa. olessa: good morning, everyone. a check of the zakim bridge and leverett connector, we have overnight construction. all lanes are open.

the expressway north by the o'neill tunnel. looking good south of town, route 3, no problems on 24 or 95. the road work by highland avenue wrapping up shortly. north of town, road work by route 2. we're expecting trains and buses to start on schedule. erika: right now a man is behind bars and will be facing a judge, accused of trying to kill a little boy. randy: new details about this disturbing case antoinette antonio is in worcester with what we've learned. antoinette: randy, that suspect faces a slew of charges this morning, including attempted murder, strangulation as well as indecent assault. the victim in this case is just 3 years old. this all started yesterday with a 9-1-1 call from the suspect himself, 21-year-old taj mcdonald. he allegedly said that he just killed the little boy, who's a family member. officers found the toddler

apartments. the boy had injuries to his face and his neck area. a worker painting a porch awning outside says that he heard a young child wailing inside that home. >> sounded like he was screaming, but, i mean, you know, just pretty much crying and sometimes screaming, but i don't know. i don't know if he was in pain. antoinette: a witness took this photo of police putting mcdonald in vehicle. police say he was babysitting the victim at the time of the attack. the child is expected to recover. neighbors say this is not the first time that police have been to that apartment. dcf tells us they are aware of the situation and they are involved in this investigation. we, of course, will continue to bring you the latest information as it becomes available. we're live in worcester this morning, antoinette antonio, wcvb newscenter 5. erika: thank you.

truck. this is the scene last night on beacon street. both victims taken to nearby hospitals. their conditions are not clear. a witness tells us they were in the crosswalk coming from a nearby restaurant when they were struck. police say the driver did stay on the scene. an investigation underway after two men were stabbed outside a braintree movie theater. police say it happened in the parking lot of the amc theater thursday night. both victims are at south shore hospital expected to recover. no arrests randy: women are on alert after a frightening attack in a boston neighborhood. police say a woman was working on gayhead street near menden street in jamaica plain. a man approached her she claims at 1:45 thursday morning, the suspect pulling a gun, demanding she hand over her phone. the woman was then forced to walk into a backyard in the area of number 24 gayhead street. the victim says the suspect sexually assaulted her.

>> i feel like a lot of people around here know each other, so everyone seems to look out for one another. for that to happen, it's kind of really bizarre. randy: police ask anyone who may have seen or heard something to give them a call. erika: right now we're getting new details about the deadly crash involving a new jersey commuter train. here's what we know at this hour. the train's engineer is now out of the hospital and cooperating with investigators. 28-year-old worked for new jersey transit for 20 years. the question, why didn't the train slow down when it approached the station. it plowed right into the hoboken terminal. a woman killed has been identified as a 34-year-old who recently moved to the u.s. from brazil. she had just dropped her toddler daughter off at day-care and was rushing to catch the train. witnesses describe just a terrifying scene.

erika: welcome back. police in hanson are searching for this man connection with a home break-in. he's a person of interest on the run. investigators returned to the scene. they left the home with a couple of bags. swat officers searched for hours earlier in the day after four people were seen running from the home after main street. a woman told police she hold the men break her back windows just before 11:00 thursday morning. police say one suspect was armed with a handgun. two suspects were quickly taken into custody. the other two are on the run.

erika: welcome back. cindy, a nice start to the day and then it's going to get windy. cindy: we do need the rain. i think it will get heavier today, tonight and tomorrow. but, rain, it's something we need. last day of september. erika: when did that happen? cindy: i don't know. but we are here and we're starting out the morning mainly dry. rain chances pretty low this afternoon, tonight, and especially saturday. if you've got outdoor plans on saturday, this is really looking like a wet day with rain around. we need this. this is one of our computer models giving us on average about 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches of rainfall. heaviest amounts i think are going to be focused across southeastern massachusetts, but we're all getting in on at least some of this rain this go-around. the storm center is to our

west pulling in waves of moisture. they've been getting the rain through the mid-atlantic states, but it's been stuck down there. high pressure to the north is going to relax and this low will scoot in our direction. it will bring in wet weather. there's a big chunk of rain out in the waters. this is getting ready to clip the outer cape. there's a batch off to the west. in between showers are filling in. we'll see that happening here from south to north as the morning wears on. right now not a lot is happening. the skies, though, are mostly it is cool. 48 degrees in worcester. we're 58 degrees in boston. we've got a lot of mid and upper 50's along the coastline now. that wind continues to come in off the water. you've been noticing it the past couple of days. you'll notice it the next couple of days. the wind does not back down today. out of the northeast right off the water, sustained 15, 20 miles per hour near the coast, closer to 10 to 15 miles per hour farther inland. as we get toward lunchtime and the afternoon, we'll bring the rain in.

not going anywhere today. staying in the 50's to near 60 degrees pretty much all day long. if you're headed to fenway tonight for the last regular season game here at home, we've got wet, cool conditions expected. only about 55 degrees. have the rain gear with you at fenway. as we go through the timeline this morning, we should get through the morning commute okay outside of the cape. lunchtime and early afternoon, showers are filling in. for the ride home, there will be areas of rain around. you can s breeze, but that rain is filling back in by tomorrow morning. wet time period here through the overnight. temperatures holding in the upper 40's and low to mid 50's and tomorrow they change very little. temperatures stuck in the 50's. just want to let you know we're tracking hurricane matthew in the caribbean. has strengthened to a category two, winds 100 miles per hour. a closer look coming up. i want to step you through the timeline on your saturday. if you have outdoor plans, you're waking up to rain in the morning tomorrow.

transplant. this morning we're hearing from tom manning about the challenges he's been facing. doctors say manning has accomplished two of three goals set by the transplant team, including restoration of urinary function. third goal is to get sensations back. manning says that he's feeling stronger and almost ready to get back to work. >> some of the guys and some of the girls, they go like this. i start getting a smirk on my face. no, m randy: manning knows the third goal is months away. right now, he's following doctor's orders and getting used to his daily medication. he says he's ready to get out and start living again. erika: commitment 2016. both donald trump and hillary clinton on the presidential campaign trail this week. the candidates focusing on the swing states. trump spent time in new hampshire yesterday. clinton campaigned in iowa. she heads to florida tomorrow where the democrat is in a dead heat with trump.

michigan. running mate mike pence will campaign in indiana. meantime, "usa today" making news for a non-endorsement. the paper has never taken sides in a presidential race, but the editorial board says it felt it had to break tradition, declaring donald trump unfit for the white house, writing he lacks the temperament, knowledge, steadiness and honesty required. they do not endorse hillary clinton or any other candidate. friday morning. asian shares mostly lower overnight after losses on wall street and renewed worries about deutsch bank. stock futures are lower. investors are awaiting the personal income and outlays report, which is due out today. boston-based environmental group is suing exxonmobil for polluting the mystic river. they accuse exxonmobil of violating the clean water act, failing to prepare for rising

no comment from exxonmobil. they've previously said the facility complies with all rules. erika: a detroit man had his world flipped upside-down for 13 hours. police initially thought he was a burglar, but turns out he locked himself out of his home, had to break a window to get in, but as you can see, he got stuck by his ankle. he couldn't move. his head just floodwater. this man expected to be just fine. dog tags belonging to a world war i veteran back where they belong. they were found on the side of the road in randolph, turned into the police department. officer kevin alred took the lead. he located family members through social media less than 24 hours after his post. >> i am so excited to hang with you in boston. >> we're excited to hang with

9-1-1 call from taj mcdonald saying he killed the little boy, who is a relative. officers found the victim sitting on a couch with injuries to his face and neck area. the child is expected to recover. randy: still no i.d. on the man killed in a construction accident in georgetown on thursday. the accident happened at the mirra company. police say the victim was backing an excavator out of a garage when he was killed. erika: we learned a scare for a woman in weymouth was a hoax. police say the story was made up. randy: investigators are trying to figure out how a ride at the big e in springfield got stuck, leaving more than a dozen people stranded in the air. west springfield firefighters had to bring in ladders to get people off the wipeout ride last night.

the ride stalled. the rescue took about two hours. no one was hurt. the ride will remain closed for the rest of the fair. erika: new video as authorities search the home of a woman feared lost at sea. linda carman was fishing with her son, nathan carman, when the boat sank. he was rescued after a week. all agencies involved will meet monday. they're trying to determine if work on carman's boat made it unsafe, something he's denied. randy: president obama is speaking at the funeral of former israeli president shimon peres. the delegation will include members of congress from both parties, former president bill clinton. national security leaders are also attending this funeral. erika: the red sox swept by the new york yankees after a loss

we're going to struggle to get out of the upper 50's. we've got a cool stretch coming and needed rain on the way. month so far, just over an inch. we typically have closer to 3 1/2 during september. our deficit for the year now is closing in on 10 1/2 inches. we will take the rain we can get. it's low pressure to the south feeding in some moisture over the next 24 hours or so. you can see a couple of batches to our south right now, but a lot of this is going to be filling in, and it will turn wet as the temperatures stuck near 60's from new york, to philly, to d.c. there's an upper-level low spinning out here. until this gets out of our hair, weather is not going to improve. that will not happen until early next week. in the tropics, we are tracking matthew. category two hurricane. the winds are 100 miles per hour. and it's going to get stronger as it continues to move through the caribbean. as we get toward saturday night, it will likely be a category three hurricane.
