businesses in florida are without power. good morning. i'm emily riemer. randy: i'm randy price. we'll get to mike wankum with the storm's track at this hour. mike? mike: it looks like the storm has weakened a little bit. anything category three and above is considered a major hurricane. look at that eye. it is just offshore. the strongest winds are these bands you see right here. those are 10 to 12 miles offshore. let's check out the winds that are happening at this moment. the we had wind gusts over 70 miles an hour. now the melbourne area, 64-mile-an-hour winds. no reports from cocoa beach right now. as you travel up the coast, less wind gusts, but those will be picking up. i think this is aiming more toward daytona beach as we head to the afternoon. we see those category three winds continuing through the day today. its position at 2:00 in the afternoon. it continues to work its way along the carolina coast, pushing offshore.

in boston, warming to the upper 60's. some areas away from the coast will be in the 70's today. looking like beautiful weather we have to deal with. early on a friday morning, i hope things are going well, olessa. olessa: not seeing any problems along the expressway. this is a check by the gas tank northbound heading to the top of the screen. a disabled car ahead. let's check the rest of your ride. all the construction just about watching. 93 south at the zakim picking up. no problems hea pike looks good this morning. if you're heading south -- north, rather, no problems there. 93 in good shape out of methuen to the leverett connector. trains and buses starting the morning on schedule. randy: breaking news we're following. we are getting new and rather dramatic video in overnight as hurricane matthew roars up the florida east coast. emily: this is video from stuart, florida, just south of port st. lucie. you can see power lines exploding there.

palm beach county and 20% of brevard county is in the dark. randy: to atlanta, georgia, where a state of emergency is in effect. traffic jammed the highways there last night. more than 500,000 people have been told to evacuate coastal georgia where they're expecting some of the most rain. matthew should be off that state by sunday morning. emily: there is new and grim news out of haiti this morning where crews are still assessing matthew's wrath. the death toll on the island expected to go higher. you can see the devastation in this video. authorities just now reaching some of the more remote areas as floodwaters recede. air travel hit hard by this storm. all flights are canceled this morning in fort lauderdale, orlando and palm beach. orlando stopped operations at 8:00 last night. the storm now impacting more than 4,800 flights nationwide.

she's going to have a live update in our next half hour. randy: at this hour, we are taking a look at port canaveral florida. the conditions there have been tough. three cruiselines have canceled plans to cruise out of this area. this is a big travel destination for a lot of people. emily: one of the biggest port cities. we heard nearby kennedy space station, no damage in that like in palm beach gardens earlier this morning. you can see the strong winds and the trees blowing in the wind. the storm has stayed about 100 miles or more off of south florida at some points, moving in, but it spared miami and fort lauderdale areas of the worst. emily: conditions in florida, they are just getting worse really by the hour. randy: we want to get a check on exactly what things look like on the coast. the eyeopener's shaun chaiyabhat

beach. he has been there all night. shaun, can you tell us about the conditions there right now? reporter: right now we are experiencing high winds. in fact, hurricane force gusts in brevard county on the east coast of central florida. i am right now protected by a hotel balcony. you cannot see those winds on me. if i step out of the way, those winds are evident right there. you see the palm fronds fact, just reported an 88-mile-per-hour wind gust not far from us here in brevard county. the hurricane churning offshore, and it is really pushing some very thick sustained winds and rain here. that rain really drenching big wet drops here nonstop. parts of this area are under flood warnings. they are already seeing significant flooding. we are going to expect more isolated flooding in this area. on the opposite side of this

she's hospitalized. the eye's antoinette antonio is in worcester this morning with what we know at this hour. antoinette? antoinette: randy, we're talking about an elderly couple, a husband and wife. they were attacked inside their own home, and this morning the wife is being treated for very serious injuries near at u-mass medical in worcester. her husband was killed during that apparent home invasion yesterday on east river street in orange. trail. as a precaution, local schools were temporarily put on lockdown yesterday. while the d.a.'s office is not releasing the names of the victims, we do know the man was in his 90's, his wife in her 70's and confined to a wheelchair. neighbors say they were a very nice couple. >> her son was always down checking on her and mowing the

antoinette: police in orange say this is the town's first murder in decades. no arrests have been made so far. we will stay on top of the investigation, and we'll bring you the latest information as we get it. live in worcester, antoinette antonio, wcvb newscenter 5. randy: detectives with flashlights are searching for cl dearborn street in roxbury. it started when a man flagged down an officer 5:30 yesterday evening. police say the deadly shooting appears to have been the result of a fight between several people all within feet of a school bus. boston public schools say crisis counselors will be on hand today for students who may have been impacted by this. the name of the victim has not been released. emily: commitment 2016 -- both campaigns are getting ready for a sunday showdown.

schlitz and evelyn cheney. emily: we would love to see your wake-up call. olessa: that may be my favorite wake-up call. randy: exactly. emily: so you're keeping your eye on florida this morning. mike: busy . remember, the eye is calm. but right around it, see those big bands of yellows and oranges? that's the eyewall. that's where you find your strongest wind. to give you some perspective, we're talking about 40 miles offshore is the eye. that's about 30 miles wide. these heavy bands are 12 miles offshore. this is going to slide towards daytona beach. as it does that, these bands will move inland. then we'll be talking about a lot more wind than the coast.

miles an hour. you see 64-mile-an-hour winds. if this slides northward, you're noticing we're not getting reports from titusville or cocoa beach. up towards daytona beach, these winds will really pick up. should be arriving 10:00, 11:00 this morning. as far as that area of hurricane force winds, here's where it looks right now as we head toward about 11:00 this morning and early afternoon. see how it punches in just a little bit and works its way back offshore. so it's really late thi i think we'll see our strongest winds across parts of northern florida. then it works its way back offshore. the rainfall amounts will be impressive down there. the heaviest rain may be to the north as a cold front interacts with the moisture from matthew. the track continues to make this one big loop. believe it or not, this thing could actually come back next week and hit parts of florida again. at that point, it is just a tropical storm.

not forecast to do much movement over the next couple of days and will hang out there. there's that cold front that will give us a chance of rain. there is your day to day. nothing but sunshine. gorgeous day coming in our direction. we'll call the high temperature today about 76 degrees. do remember, it's going to be a little cooler near the shoreline. tomorrow we have showers coming in. we start with a hint of sunshine. then the rain starts to move in as we talk about late afternoon eventually, that hangs a little bit onto sunday morning, clears away, and your sunday is looking beautiful right now. we'll see temperatures a little bit on the cooler side. but again, looking at sunshine by afternoon. about 60 degrees. not a bad weekend. a few showers thrown in there. it's mosey saturday night. if you're going to dinner, take the umbrella with you. emily: it could be worse. mike: definitely. how's friday morning? olessa: a live look outside, 9 # looks good.

is packing winds well over 100 miles per hour, and thousands of people are without electricity right now. mike has been watching its path all morning long. randy: mike's tracking the conditions at this hour. mike? mike: a very impressive storm. the eye is offshore. you see these bands where you see the yellows and oranges? that's where you see your maximum sustained winds. they are right at the shoreline. i think what this is going to be doing is sliding inland a little bit. that's going to push stronger windsan morning. right now, maximum sustained winds are running 41 miles per hour, melbourne 43. gusts up to 65. we have seen hurricane-strength gusts of over 74 miles per hour. daytona beach may be the area where we see our strongest winds. here's the position this afternoon. as we head through the weekend, we're starting to loop this thing through the carolinas, and this may loop back around and hit the coast of florida again.

logan is busy this morning. the good news, though, only a couple of flights canceled at this point. the ripple effect of what's happening in florida is being felt all along the east coast. 4,000 flights so far have been canceled, mostly in and out of miami, fort lauderdale. many airlines are letting passengers alter their plans and delay travel for a few days without the typical ticket change fee. now, dozens of evacuees managed to catch some >> i woke up this morning to a text from my mom saying you don't have a choice. you're coming home. >> our son called us and said we're leaving. we thought we would stay. >> he goes three weeks without power, a month without power, forget it. it's not worth it. sera: some airlines added extra flights yesterday morning to help with those evacuations out of florida. now, many of the cancellations were done in advance mostly so

the latest there. we're also at logan airport. emily: mike has been keeping an eye on this. mike: you had a good question earlier. can it become a four? no. they're not quite as organized. it's right offshore, really right offshore. this is as close as you can get. threading the needle. here's what's happening. there's where the center of the storm is. it's 50 miles offshore. those spiral bands you see around the eye, that's where this is where we see the winds that are category three in here. wind gusts easily could be over 130 miles per hour. as far as what's going to happen with this, it looks like it's going to try to make its way toward daytona beach. that may be its closest approach to land. as far as winds, we're not looking at a whole lot of breeze. you'll see in daytona beach, gusting to 58 miles an hour. i think that number will go into the 70's, 80's, maybe over 100 miles an hour later this morning.

toward st. augustine and looping offshore. that is the center right now. it's keeping the strongest winds right near the shoreline at this point. what's going to happen? it's going to loop its way around. so we've got the strongest winds as we head through this morning and then into the early afternoon hours as it try to nudge its way offshore. that will push hurricane winds offshore as well. as far as our weather around here, today it's revolving around sunshine. 76 degrees. we'll see evening showers tomorrow. then for your sunday, it will be clearing we'll see temperatures around 62 degrees. so overall not a bad weekend. your day tomorrow starts with sunshine. just fades to cloud cover as we head to the afternoon. a beautiful morning out there this morning. how are things with traffic? olessa: so far, it's a quiet start. there's the zakim, leverett connector southbound heading down, no problems here. let's get to the maps and the rest of your ride looks pretty much the same. no troubles yet on 24. route 3 is quiet.
