another nice day. shayna: i'm going to boston. doug: i am too. i'm doug meehan. shayna: i'm shayna seymour in for antoinette this morning. what's up with those pictures? mike: patchy fog here or there. it has relationship to what's going on in the tropics. the humidity is out there. we cooled down last night. you get that fog to form. as soon as the sun warms things up, that fog will dissipate quickly. speaking of the tropical system, here's where matthew is. this is a new f added. a tornado watch box, one of the by-products associated with a hurricane. right now, look at that. hilton head, wind gusts of 87 miles per hour. we're seeing torrential rains on the coast. some of that moisture trying to work its way in here. we see a little fog this morning. we're also going to see a chance for enhanced showers tomorrow. the storm will take a right-hand turn and basically come back to where it started from. that's not until wednesday of next week. we have showers in the forecast. for today, we'll call it fading

there was blood dripping. and the man was fully conscious, and there was a homeless man on the side there in dunkin' doughnuts, and he took it off his shirt and was holding the blood in. doug: boston e.m.s. tells us the victim had nonlife-threatening injuries. there's no word on any arrests in this attack. "the globe" is reporting neither the victim nor the suspect had any ties to emerson college. police in new hampshire investigate the death of a toddler. leo witham is facing child endangerment charges and is accused of purposely leaving that child alone. the child died wednesday. the cause is under investigation. also a charge of drug possession and falsifying evidence. shayna: georgia and south carolina are bracing for hurricane matthew as it spins away from florida. the storm has weakened a bit,

moved into savannah, georgia, last night. those conditions and heavy flooding are expected to keep up through this morning. many homes in the area have been evacuated. and waves were rolling last night in folly beach, south carolina. hurricane matthew churning up the waters there with winds still up over 100 miles per hour. forecasters say a storm surge of up to nine feet is possible in many places. north carolina is also bracing for the impact. people in wrightsville beach spent part of yesterday putting down sandbags ahead of the storm. up to 15 inches of rain could be headed to the area. that has north carolina's governor concerned. >> this has the potential for north carolina to see the worst flooding since hurricane floyd in 1999. shayna: president obama signed an emergency declaration making federal aid available to dozens

figure out why the car went off the road. doug: 5 investigates, learning two new deputy commissioners are now in place at the state's department of conservation and recreation. the move comes as governor baker tries to control the damage from highly publicized problems. last friday, matthew sisk resigned as d.c.r. deputy commissioner when this video surfaced showing him using lights and sirens to cut through traffic in his state vehicle. back in august, sisk and his when 5 investigates started asking questions about a july v.i.p. party when guests were driven to the hat shelf in state-funded golf carts. three other high-ranking members of d.c.r. and energy and environmental affairs also resigned or were fired this week. shayna: drivers can find out exactly how much it will cost to use the mass pike when a new tolling system goes into effect. mass d.o.t. has approved new rates after feedback from the

mike: if you look this way, it's foggy. if you look this way, it's blue skies. if you go downtown, it's clear. it's one of those days where we have a little bit of everything. it should be burning off. we'll have sunshine. then we have new clouds because we have this hurricane off the east coast. here's the visibility. you can see where the fog is thickest. we have visibility in a few spots down to 1/4 mile. worcester is above the fog at this point. 10 miles as well. the reason for it, this is where we had the air temperature cool enough. remember, if you've got moisture in the air, you cool, condense, and form a cloud. this is just a cloud sitting on the ground. once we warm up, the cloud will dissipate. blame it on matthew. it has a new tornado watch box issued. it's bringing in unseasonably amount of moisture. we'll be dealing fog. this gives us a better chance of

the satellite picture looks. doesn't pick up fog very well. we have broken clouds out there. this afternoon will be fading sunshine. as you look over the city right now, great view over the city. but i will tell you as we step outside right now, you can probably see a couple hundred feet, because the fog and visibility are down at the station. anytime you have the dew point and temperature match each other, those are good ingredients for fog. if you have no winds stirring things up, you don't get it in the lower 50's, a few upper 40's. notice the area where we're seeing the thickest fog is where we're seeing the coolest temperatures right now. over the city, we have fog right now. then it will be going to sunshine. this afternoon, a new deck of clouds. tonight we have showers back in the forecast. i know it's a weekend, but we need rain desperately. showers tonight, rain tomorrow, actually is good news in this forecast. let's talk about the rain chances. remember, matthew is staying to

that's good news there. let me show you where matthew is at right now. it is down to a category one storm moving to the northeast at 12 miles per hour. maximum sustained winds, and it's hard to find the eye now, but maximum sustained winds right now are about 85 miles an hour here just as it's moving toward the charleston area. this red box is actually a tornado watch box. one of the by-products of a hurricane moving inland is outbreaks of tornadoes. the winds down in hilton head, wind gusts just in the last the winds are strong along the coast right now, and you're seeing tons and tons of moisture moving in as well as that storm surge. you'll be hearing a lot about damage along the coast as we talk about the daytime hours today through south carolina and into north carolina. that storm will then continue its right-hand turn becoming a tropical system and moving completely away from us. s surf will be churned up. tomorrow, temperatures in the 60's, showers in the forecast tonight.

"we cannot allow this man to become president." doug: house speaker paul ryan has canceled an event with trump scheduled for today. republican leaders reject calls for trump to drop out of the race, leaving the ticket to running mate mike pence. former utah republican john huntsman is one of the gop members, telling the "salt lake tribune," quote, in a campaign cycle that has been nothing but a has come for governor pence to lead the ticket. new hampshire senator kelly ayotte also reacting to trump's comments, calling them, quote, totally inappropriate and offensive. shayna: hillary clinton's campaign is reacting to an alleged leak of some of her paid speeches to financial institutions. the website wikileaks put out documents in which clinton allegedly praised a plan that would require cuts to social security. she also allegedly said it was an oversimplification to blame the 2008 financial crisis on the u.s. banking system and

has the latest on the investigation. reporter: a simple sign of sympathy outside this home in orange, the scene of a deadly crime on wednesday. police are still searching for the killer. >> it's terrible. you hear this on television, and you know what happens, but never this close. i mean, this is really scary. reporter: 95-year-old thomas hardy was killed. his wife, joanna fisher, is still hospitalized with serious injuries. no suspects have been named, but police believe the killer may they're looking for a 2003 toyota corolla like this one. the license plate on the gray or silver station wagon reads m99949. >> they did interview us. i know with the people i talked to, nobody saw anything. reporter: as investigators look for a motive, neighbors also wonder who would hurt the warm and friendly couple they've waved to for years.

>> i have a lot of sympathy for them, you know, being close to my own mother and my nieces and cousins and stuff. it definitely, you know, hits home. total nightmare. reporter: the attack happened here on wednesday evening at the couple's home. police say if you think you may have seen that gray or silver station wagon, you are asked to reach out to orange police. in orange, juli mcdonald, wcvb, newscenter 5. shayna: right now, a woman is behind bars charged with murdering her husband in roxbury. karen edwardpe when she faced a judge yesterday morning, even asking the court why she needed a lawyer. police say she stabbed her husband, collins edwards, in the chest after an argument inside a home on wensley street. the defendant's behavior in court has now prompted an in-depth mental review. >> the doctor here from the west roxbury court clinic did evaluate her, and it's her opinion that further evaluation must be done regarding the

shayna: edwards is being held without bail pending the outcome of that evaluation. doug: here's an interesting idea. police in new bedford are asking for help in keeping tabs on surveillance cameras in the city. they've asked residents and businesses with cameras to consider joining a registry. police say the program is voluntary, and the information on the cameras will be kept secret. they say knowing where the cameras are are going to help police solve crimes faster even though they wouldn't have direct access to those cameras. shayna: two newton football coaches are suspended with pay after a player claims he was assaulted on a team bus. the alleged incident happened thursday night as the team was returning from an away game. police pulled the bus over in concord after a player called 9-1-1 and reported that his coach had assaulted him. the newton superintendent says both coaches on the bus are now on paid leave. >> the police were called and investigated. and now we are doing our own

it's going to be done quickly, and we will follow up. shayna: it's not clear if either coach will face charges. doug: an 81-year-old amherst grandmother is speaking out after a marijuana plant was taken from her backyard. margaret holcomb -- she goes by peg -- says she uses marijuana for medical purposes and believes it has helped her with her glaucoma. she was out of town when authorities came to her property. her son heard a helicopter overhead and a short time later troopers were at the home. the massachusetts state police says it was part of a marijuana eradication operation working with the state's national guard. >> we supposedly live in a democracy, and i'm beginning to wonder about that now. >> you feel like this is a violation of your constitutional -- >> yes, it's a violation of my constitutional rights, particularly the fourth amendment. doug: a spokesperson for the state police says it doesn't matter what the marijuana is used for. the law makes it illegal to grow it outside an unrestricted area.

girls by dressing up as clowns. jaime salinis and elandra sledge were both arraigned on disorderly conduct charges yesterday. police say they jumped out of a car to scare two girls, then chased them down the street while screaming at them. it's part of a trend of clown scares across the country that this judge does not find amusing. >> it's extremely, extremely alarming about what's going on shayna: police say the women told them they thought it would be funny. doug: don't know why people are doing that. i'm missing something here. fema has an unusual way to predict the severity of a natural disaster. the so called waffle house index is predicting a rough recovery after hurricane matthew. yes, you heard me right. the popular southern breakfast chain is known for staying open no matter what. so anytime one shuts down, it

so powerful. this is tropical storm nicole. nicole went to a category two storm briefly yesterday and then back to a tropical storm just winding down. it's going to slowly meander toward bermuda just as a wind-driven windstorm. the thing about this morning, we have fog out there. we have this band of fog circling the city. depending where you're at, you're seeing beautiful blue skies, but in some places you can't see anything because visibility is down to 1/4 mile in ym this should be burning off as we head toward 9:30, 10:00 this morning. matthew down to the south, cold front to the west. both playing into our forecast to some degree. the main storm will say to the south. you see what it's doing. see the cloud cover? all of that kind of because matthew is lifting moisture over the top of us. and because of that little more moisture, when this cold front comes through, it will trigger off substantial rain as we look over the southeastern part of the state. not everyone will get good rain.

broken clouds. that cloud cover will be thickening up. look at the view from boston harbor. just crystal clear right now. a little bit of cloud cover, but not much. 53 degrees and temperatures out there right now off our morning lows which were down in the 40's. we still have pockets of 40's showing up. once the sun warms up, we'll burn that fog away. how about high temperatures today? generally in the 70's inland. cooler near the water. and with some elevation, worcester 66 degrees for a high. 70's today. the cape will enjoy temperatures into the upper 60's. this is the best place for seeing rain as we talk about tomorrow. here's what's going to happen. that cold front's coming in. remember, all that moisture is in place because matthew is churning up the east coast. then we slide this cold front into it. later tonight, scattered showers are possible out there. as we head towards tomorrow, this is where we'll see our best chance, but notice where the best chance is. toward the cape. matthew staying way down here to

this forecast. eventually, this kicks on through. we go back to some sunshine as we head toward monday. here's the forecast. today, kind of fading sunshine. it's foggy right now. we'll go to sunshine. then we'll fade it back in with mostly cloudy skies this afternoon. tomorrow, we have rain in the forecast. a little timeline. here's the way the map looks at 8:00 a.m. a lot of clouds, a hit or miss shower or two. then we get moisture bubbling up. from boston to providence and to the east, that's where you'll get rain. inland, gray skies. may even be looking at that will stay that way as we head through the afternoon, even into the evening hours, eventually clearing out as we get into monday's forecast. clear skies will allow us to warm up into the 60's. we'll have overnight lows down into the 30's. frosty out there in a few spots. then we'll get that sunshine coming back in the afternoon. next chance of rain thursday. your best opportunity for rain over the next seven days looks like tomorrow and primarily focused down toward the cape. doug? doug: thank you. red sox need to win three in a row or the season is over.
